One More Soldier is an exquisite tale of friendship, love, and courage that spans a period of seven years but at its essence, sees a young man attempting to live a lifetime of experiences in the two short weeks he has left before he leaves for war.

The story begins in 1963, at a time when this country was hanging in the delicate balance between innocence and revolution. A president had been assassinated, Martin Luther King, Jr. had delivered his famous speech at the Washington Monument just sever...more

Marie Sexton, I don't even know you, so why did you have to break my heart? There are tears streaming down my face and my heart aches for Bran and for Will. What a hauntingly beautiful tale. This is going into my favorites, and I will proudly proclaim it a must read. I'm quite positive that I will never forget these two men or what they shared. Thank you, Ms. Sexton, for sharing this. It could not have been easy to write.

I loved this story. It made me think of Raymond Carver and that close narration, sparse and only essential prose and vivid imagery. I still have the sun-bleached swimming pool painted starkly across my brain. Sexton is passionate about character-driven story, and One More Soldier is no exception. And if you love a throwback, you will love the late sixties vibe

This was a very powerful and beautiful story. Amazingly written!

Although this story is 69 pages (double spaced at least), the quick tale packs a punch. I’m a fan of Sexton’s and once again she invokes emotion, sex, and a vivid setting even in the shortest amount of space. Although the story is set in the late 60’s, there are several contemporary parallels. The predictable ending still wrings a good bit of emotion, maybe a tear or two of more sensitive readers, and is well worth taking the time and few dollars to read.

Will first meets Bran as an eleven year...more

This little novella surprised me. For some reason I had the preconception that it was by an English author, one that writes Age of Sail and so in that, I’ve obviously got my Marie’s muddled (sorry to both of you) so when I encountered a bitter-sweet (be warned) love story with a rather worrying start:

I first met Bran eight years ago. He was eleven years old.
I was twenty-eight.

But this is all right, actually, because you are supposed to feel that prickle of unease, because that’s exactly what the...more

In this short, deceptively-simple story Marie Sexton takes the reader from joy to tears. The relationship felt completely real, and although I wish for the sake of the characters that it had ended differently, it rang true and almost necessary. The last paragraph sealed the story perfectly. Unless you insist on HEA, read this.

This is a solid 4-star book. There is nothing not to like about it - except perhaps it's a trifle too short.
I would have liked to see a few more scenes between Will and Bran, from their earlier life perhaps or just a bit more at the end. I know it wouldn't have changed the message of the book at all, but I did find myself wanting a little more exposition.
I think Marie is a victim of her own success with me. After reading some of her longer works I know just how good she can be, and so my initial...more

One of the most heartbreakingly beautiful stories I have ever read. A love story that plays out within the confines of the uncertainty of war - lovely in its innocence, raw in its passion, and staggering in its realism. It reminded me that the most unforgettable love stories are not always those with a HEA, but those that fall just short of one.

This short is a beautifully touching, but tragic love story. It is heart warming and tender. It left me with tears running down my cheeks. It goes to show that well written short can be as fulfilling as a full length novel. I have loved everyone of Sexton books and recommend them highly.

A moving story, but I'm pretty much never in the mood for tragic love stories ... I would give it 3 - 4 stars based on the quality of the writing, but in terms of how much I actually enjoyed it ...

Tragic and emotional sad ending, not HEA...Why I would like to read something so depressing? Nope, not for me thanks..

Heart breaking and so real. Even though I was a child through most of the Vietnam War, I still remember the funerals and the nightly news and the devastation it wreaked on a generation. As a history major and in particular because of classes I took that focused on the 60s and the Vietnam War, I found this book to be very moving. I have enjoyed Marie's longer books, but this shorter story was just as affecting. Well done Marie!

This is the first audio book I have gotten in this genre and I liked i...more

Will has grown up and come of age in a time when being gay really was "the love that dare not speak its name" only to find himself confronted with an 11 year old boy who needs his presence after the death of his father. Brannon is intelligent, and could go far, but is forced to drop out of school to help is mother. He leaves Huston to work and a year later and much more a man returns. Will then must deal with the 17 year age difference between himself and Bran as the young man comes into himself...more

This is a story that I've been meaning to read for a long time now. It might be one of the first m/m romances to end unhappily, before the whole Bittersweet subgenre came into the community. But for all that the ending is glaringly at me, so obviously, from the moment the story started didn't mean that I enjoyed it any less. In fact, the lessening of some of the surprise worked to show that the story still had...more

Why is Marie Sexton a good writer? Personally, I think it's because she always offers a story that may be difficult to read and will occasionally break your heart into pieces and stop your lungs from taking in air, but it will also end up - without fail leaving you with a sense of gratification at the end. There are not many authors who successfully challenge me and improve me as a reader in the m/m romance genre, but she does it all the time.

She doesn't have to do it in a lengthy, wordy tale sp...more

Will has known Bran since he first taught him to swim, when Bran was eleven years old. But now, seven years later, Bran has returned from a year of hard work on a ranch outside of Houston and he is no longer the boy Will remembers. He's now eighteen, quite grown up, and making no secret of the fact that he's interested in a sexual relationship with Will. At first, Will is horrified. He has a hard time forgetting the Bran he knew as a child, and given their seventeen-year age difference, he can't...more

Short book, but not lacking on story.

I have to write something because this story has been popping in my head at odd moments the last few days, and every time it does, I think I'm going to have a sobbing fit.

I read this before bed the other night and it wasn't a good idea. You need to be prepared for the story, and you need a happy book prepared to read right when you finish.

God this book was beautiful, so tragic and emotional I don't think I have ever cried so much, Will and Bran perfect together a tender loving relationship that left me wondering why.....why did it have to finish with such a sad ending I was hoping in vain for a HEA that never came. Highly recommended one very moving love story that will stay with you for a long time!

Yes, it did make me cry at the end, but only a bit because really it was an uplifting story. The writing was impeccable - I really felt I was watching two good people grow up into good men. Also to me it had a great feel of the period and location. Of course it doesn't hurt to remember that Will is still only 35/36 or so at the end of the story :).

Oh my gah, Marie Sexton you just killed me! It was so short but this is testimony to amazing talent that you made me cry (loud sobs, thanks) with such a short story. I'm so heart broken but it was beautiful and simple. A must read.

Loved it. I was completely touched by the way Will seemed to take Brandon under his wing through out the years of his young life. And even though they were many years apart in age, the way Will handled Brandon's "coming of age" was sweet. I really appreciate Marie writing about Will's struggle with Brandon's feeling of him. It made the transition of Will's feelings for him more realistic to me. Being used to Marie's quirky romantic stories, I was pleasantly surprised of the difference in this sh...more

Marie Sexton lives in Colorado. She’s a fan of just about anything that involves muscular young men piling on top of each other. In particular, she loves the Denver Broncos and enjoys going to the games with her husband. Her imaginary friends often tag along. Marie has one daughter, two cats, and one dog, all of whom seem bent on destroying what remains of her sanity. She loves them anyway.
