I'm not at all sure how I missed this when it first came out but what a treat to find it now. This is a fabulous story. Ben Addison and Lisa Nathan are two of the very few chosen to clerk for the Supreme Court. They are the crème de la crème. But, one small mistake takes them into a book full of trust and mistrust. This story has characters who are so real, I swear I would recognize them on the street. And this mystery plot is so good that the pages turn themselves and there isn't even one singl...more

I actually read some of the Graphic Novels that Mr Meltzer before reading this book. It is because of his reading his comic books that I wanted to read his novels. In many ways I was not disappointed at all — his dialogue is terrific. I can see how he easily makes the transition to graphic novels. He has an ear for dialogue.

In addition, the plot is fairly tight. It snakes up on you and the various acts in the book (it most clearly is divided into a three part novel) are terrific.

So, why only thr...more

The Tenth Justice is my first legal thriller, and I must confess that it was legally thrilling. Ok, bad joke, but I really did enjoy reading this book! The dialogue was completely realistic and humorous (if a bit mature) and the plot was uber mysterious. I stayed up late reading it! The twists and turns had me suspecting every one of the characters at some point. The characters themselves were so well developed it made reading a special treat. I didn’t once think that Ben’s, Nathan’s, or any oth...more

I had to keep reminding myself that this was an earlier book of Meltzer's because I could not think of a dumber main character. Ben Addison, newly graduated from Yale Law School, is chosen to be a law clerk for the Supreme Court. On his first day, during orientation, the clerks are told to keep their mouths closed about cases being decided. Shortly thereafer, Ben blabs a decision ahead of time to someone he only talked to on the phone and is meeting for the first time. Surprise, Surprise! This p...more

Summary: A Washington-based thriller about four ambitious twenty-something housemates, fresh out of college and eager to make their mark in their careers. When one of them, Ben Addison, is tricked into leaking a Supreme Court decision on a corporate merger in advance, he lands them all in big trouble.

On Ben Addison's first day as a Supreme Court clerk, he's tricked into leaking an important decision which leads to a fishy financial killing on Wall Street. With little choice, and not much remorse...more

...with liberty and corruption for all -- actually 3.5stars

I have a few Brad Meltzer books but this is the first one I’ve actually read and I can only say I am moving at least one more up on my TBR pile as I write this review.

This multi-layered thriller set in the US Capitol gives us insight to America’s legal decisions. Naïvete, ambition and a lapse in judgment is a dangerous combination as Ben Addison proves with his second judicial clerk assignment. I would have liked the story to be a littl...more

I would really give this a 3.5 rating. It was a fun, easy read. The book is mostly dialogue, so not alot of fancy prose in this one. It's a "law thriller", although there are really no court situations. The major character is Ben Addison who is a new clerk for a Supreme Court justice. He accidentally tells someone the outcome of an upcoming decision, which is obviously against the code of ethics for someone in his position even if it was not intentional, and of course the person ends up benefitt...more

This is a riveting story about recent law school graduates clerking for the Supreme Court. It was the first novel for Brad Meltzer and helped launch Rob Weisbach's imprint at Morrow. Brad turned out to be an extremely nice guy, well deserving of his success.

I loved this book and read it in just over a day! A John Grisham sort of book in that it deals with courts and law but this one is primarily about 2 young graduates that work for a justice on the Supreme Court and how one is tricked into revealing a decision before it is announced. This slip of the tongue results in huge financial gain and suspicion as to a potential leak. The story gravitates into blackmail and physical danger to the young lawyers friends and family should he chose not to conti...more

Brad Meltzer’s The Tenth Justice

I first heard of Brad Meltzer through his show “Decoded”. After watching an episode that dealt with the secrets of The Grove, I wanted to see what his books were like.

The Tenth Justice is a story of bad judgment, betrayal and ultimately mind games. Friendships are tested, sanity is questioned and one man finds himself digging a hole for himself and his career that he may not get out of. Four friends, who have moved to Washington to further their careers, find that...more

This is one of the best books of this genre I have read in a long time. I picked this book up because I heard an interview with the author on NPR. I was highly impressed with his NPR piece because he talked about the research that goes into his books.

I found this book suspenseful in a way I haven't experienced in a while. I was constantly suspecting the different characters as the author took me through the twists and turns in the story. The writing is first rate for a suspense novel. It is even...more

Well, this was a quick, fun read. Too much information was kept from the readers for no reason other than to 'surprise' the reader which made the surprise a little 'deus ex machina' for my taste but if I wasn't going to let the fact that supposedly brilliant people would keep doing ridiculously stupid things why would I let any of the other minor inconsistencies and weaknesses keep me from enjoying the book as a whole. Surprised it's not a movie as it's a rather straight-forward action packed pl...more

Although I love Brad Meltzer's work, I can honestly say that this was not one of his best. Ben Addison, the main character, is too predictable and contradictory. Ben is supposed to be top of his law class and have earned a hard-won clerkship at the Supreme Court, yet he falls for a prank that most little kids would have figured out. Then, in his attempts to save himself from ruin, he fails to anticipate even the most basic moves by his adversary. Rick Fagen, his enemy, is not always believable,...more

This book was fine. I'm not a huge Meltzer fan, but sometimes the books are alright. This one was good except for a serious drawback... the 4 of 5 main characters are men and they talk to eachother like women. It isn't gay, but it isn't normal chatter between 4 guys who have known eachother since grade school. There are too many emotions in the conversations. It was hard to read through certain point simply because of the chick-chatter of these characters. The main character is a whiny little id...more

After reading a few thick serious novels in a row, I wanted something light and trashy for my spring break reading. And I guess I got what I asked for, but as someone who has often enjoyed cheesy thrillers and even enjoyed other books by Meltzer in the past, I still found this one a bit too predictable and a bit too cheesily written. I know it was his first novel, and it definitely kept me engaged so maybe I shouldnt complain TOO much, but I would have preferred more realistic characters and dia...more

This legal thriller by first time author had some good plot elements, but I had trouble with the main character and much of the premise. The main character a new lawyer that has landed a job as a clerk for the US Supreme Court. Both being a clerk and a lawyer require the utmost discretion, yet the main character jabbers like a teenager to his friends and to a criminal about his cases and his situation. All of which gets him and his friends into trouble. By the end of the book your really can't s...more

This book's characters are the higher echelon of law graduates and friends. While the setting is the offices of the Supreme Court, they seem to be still of the mindset that they are still in college. The book is a fun episode of one of the clerk's being tricked into divulging something that should be kept in the confinces of the Supreme Court offices. From there the Keystone Kop antics begin and rather than being a nailbiter, the story is an amusing question of how are they going to get out of t...more

Ben Addison has just graduated from Yale Law School and has landed the enviable position as a clerk for U. S. Supreme Court Justice Hollis. He becomes good friends with his co-clerk, Lisa. Ben shares an apartment with his three best friends from high school – Nathan, Eric and Ober.

Shortly after taking the job, Ben is tricked into revealing a Supreme Court decision before it’s announced. The person who tricked Ben makes a fortune in the stock market since he had prior knowledge on the ruling. Wor...more

Always start with the positive... So, yes. I read it, lasted all the way through, and don't think of it as time lamentably and irretrievably lost.

That having been said... Is it too much to ask for books in which the Perilous Plot is advanced by means other than abject stupidity on the part of the primary characters? Particularly characters who are supposed to be so very, very smart in the first place?

It's not fair or intended that this be taken -primarily- as a slight on this particular book, i...more

This was my second Brad Meltzer read and it did nothing to improve my opinion of him as an author.
The main character is unbelievably unreal, he is supposed to be this highflyer , just out of college young legal egal but has the maturity of an adolescent, his constant responce to just about everything is.... i don`t want to hear it/ i don`t want to talk about it....
The conversation between the 4 friends is haltingly, hackingly written without a natural flow.
Mr. Meltzer has been likened to John Gr...more

Story of friendship, ambition, failure, real life issues performed by realistic characters. Well conceived and well put together story. Only weakness that became distracting was the extreme, continuous and relationship ending arguments between friends--very unrealistic, nobody's friendhsip would survive even one of these. Also, the extreme anger of the main character, Ben, which was totally uncontrolled did not mesh with an intellectual capable of earning a position of US S. Ct law clerk.

This was really one of the best lawyer thrillers I've read (or actually in this case listened to). It concerns Ben, a Supreme Court clerk who reveals a decision to a man (Rick) who claims to be his justice's former clerk, but wasn't. Ben's revelation is used for insider trading and he will lose his job if he is found out. Ben and his three roommates are long-time friends and they all become involved and endangered.
I would have given the book five stars, but there is talk of losing virginity and...more

E le l...more

This is a book about two 28 year old Clerks who assume the role as advisors to a Supreme Court Justice. When one is tricked into divulging confidential information, the plot thickens. The clerks struggles to avoid continued blackmail while holding together his close circle of friends who also become involved.

The emotions between friends (especially 28 year old males) is cheesy at times. The book drags on at some points and seems circular. Overall, it maintained my interest but not strongly.

Pulls you in from page one. Any time I have a love/ hate feeling for the main character I know that the author has hooked me. Many times I felt frustrated with certain behaviors. Then I realized that this book/story took place in the mid to late ninety's and it was the missing technology that was the cause. How spoiled am I? After that I thoroughly enjoyed this book and wood highly recommend it to anyone who love a good read. Brad Meltzer is now on my to read list.

Yale Law grad Ben Addison has a pretty sweet life, sharing a house with his three best friends in Washington, D.C., and working as a clerk for the Supreme Court--until he makes a mistake that puts his job, his friends, and his life in jeopardy. If you can ignore the gaping plot holes and really, really stupid and unrealistic choices made by the characters, The Tenth Justice is a fun vacation read--essentially legal thriller fantasy for lawyers.

Brad Melzter has a unique way of staying simple in his plot, but keeping the reader interested in all that the story has to offer. Crazy twists and turns do not have to be extravagant, as Meltzer so wittingly shows us in his first novel. There is no doubt that Meltzer did his research on every aspect of this story as the details about the characters lives drip with reality that, in my mind, remain unquestioned. For a political thriller, it delivers in a quick read that makes the reader *want* to...more
