Just started reading another book by Meltzer and remembered the reason I even picked it up. The Zero Game is a really thrilling read about a group who play a game with congressional bills. The bet is usually whether they can insert some nonsense into the a bill, a weird sentence or strange appropriation (pork) with no real meaning that they can sneak by. The game is run secretly in an extremely clandestine fashion until one of the aides is murdered-- it seems the game has more meaning than an...more

Saw it at Wal-Mart, read the jacket and it sounded good, so I did a bit of research and decided to give Brad a try. Boy, am I glad I did!

This book is unbelievable! I'm extremely glad I decided to 'gamble' on it. Brad knows how to write, and I can't wait to pick up his other novels. His characters are colourful, with completely different personalities. His plot twists are awesomely written; heck, the plot turns again in the Epilogue, and it was awesome to see a twist thrown in that way. I'd n...more

The first quarter of the book yielded great promise with the idea that legislators, assistants, and lobbyists might make bets on legislation, particularly that which was meaningless. Even that promising theme was eventually destroyed as a hoax at the end, much to my disappointment. The book went downhill when the original character who was narrating the story in the first person was suddenly killed, and the reader has to make the rough adjustment of following the rest of the book narrated in t...more

Good political thriller with a semi-realistic tone. Meltzer keeps the pace going although at times it's at the sacrifice of the writing. How many times can a character "smash" through the door way? Really? A nicely done cave sequence mid-story that adds the last needed reader momentum to get to the finale and tie up all the loose ends. Don't expect the book to stay with you after completed, nor to learn anything insightful about the inner workings of DC. Overall, exactly what the co...more

I first must admit that the only reason I picked this book up was the title started with a Z. I needed Z to finish up a challenge from one of my book clubs. However, I must say that I was surprised how much I enjoyed it; especially since this is not my type of book at all. Once politics start coming into the mix I usually lose interest quickly.

Yet, this story had enough suspense to keep me hooked. The plot moved quickly, was easy to follow and and overall good read. I am not sure I will rea...more

If Washington were like this, I could get into politics. (But that's not an endorsement for the book...)

Junior level D.C. types get involved in a secret game of betting on Washington outcomes; i.e. changing the wording in bills, passing votes by a certain number, etc. etc. Things get out of hand, people start dying, and it becomes a standard suspense thriller.

This book was so awful, I finished reading it last night. It's about this betting game people are playing on Capitol Hill and then one of the main characters is killed, and it all begins! So cheesy, but I couldn't help myself. I tried to read this book before I knew I was moving, and it totally felt like I was still at work. But now that I'm leaving...

I was immediately sucked in to this book, I found myself falling to sleep no earlier than 11:30pm, I just could not stop reading! The Zero Game will take you though a suspenseful chase which could have only been better if the villain was a tad bit smarter. Fast-read page turner, although I think the very end dragged a bit, it was still a good read!

I picked this up because the book jacket made it sound very interesting. It was all right, but not one I'll read again. A main character dies extremely early into the book, and I didn't find the ending at all satisfactory. The book's concept, about a secret Congressional betting game, has plenty of promise, but failed to deliver for me.

It is still January but I can guarantee you that this one will be on my top ten for 2004. Capital Hill staffers join in a game of wits and gambling - played under the table until one day when it all turns deadly. The plot of this book is excellent but the telling of it is what kept me glued to the book.

Fun thriller. Full disclosure: the book is set in my occupation and the author is a friend of friends. While the set-up for this book doesn't happen in the real world, I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and story.

A short suspense novel that at times was pretty gripping, but at other times was pretty tedious. The characters were not very well developed, but the action and scenery was. The foil was a bit hard to belive,

A thriller set in DC. Fun to follow the action around this great city. Good smart characters. Really different and interesting plot. Wonderful 17 yo Black heroine. Read the entire book in one sitting.

This was the first Meltzer book I read. It drew me in from the start and kept me interested through the duration. Fantastic. I found a new favorite author thanks to this book!

not bad overall, a little messy towards the middle, i think the author was trying to squeeze too much into one novel.

But i enjoyed it. An interesting take on Washington....

I was disappointed there wasn't many DC action scenes after the first few chapters, but it was a good mystery beach-read nonetheless.
