A sparkling breath of fresh air, this book captures the spirit of friendship in the most charming and sauciest manner possible!
The book is a far cry from the regular breed of YA novels which seem to dwell on the fixed notions that young girls basically fall into two main groups: One, the hatefully pretty, perpetually scheming Prom Queens with their nastier than “week-ol’ milk” cliques! And at the other end of the rainbow, the brave under-dog…..not much to look at, the gene...more

This is beginning to feel a little too familiar, but here's yet another disapointment from my YA Lit class. First, I should state that I have never liked the whole "girl power" thing. I guess I always felt intelligent/empowered enough as a teenager to not have to rely on books like this to show me how fantastic it is to be female. Also, generally speaking, I find large groups of girls terrifying, especially at the high school age. So lots of pre-existing strikes against this book. ...more

This book was simply a masterpiece. I'm starting to get addicted to YA lit, eventhough I'm in my late twenties . . . is that sick and wrong? I picked this one up because I'd heard of the movie, and it was on a list and sounded interesting. I was also in the mood for a little light reading. It's very light--I finished it in one day.
The book deals with four 15-year-old girls who each go a separate way for their summer vacations. Each girl has a unique personality and family circumstance. They ...more

My cousinrecommends it for: people who like an "all in one" story. (all in one means multiple feelings)
This story is about four girls that link together during there first summer away by a pair of pants. They where friends before they where born, having moms in a meternity yoga class. During the summer they pass these pants from girl to girl giving a detailed letter about what happened when they wore the pants. During this time they all do different things. Bridget the oldest, goes to Mexico for a soccer clinic. When there she meets a instructer that she starts to like. Lena the shy one, goes to ...more

Yes, I just read this book today. This book was published in 2001, well after my preteen years and even if it had been around when I was a preteen I still would not have read it. I did not read as a child or preteen ( as teenager I read because it was required for school but I didn't read books on my own until I finished grad school I figured why read for pleasure when I could be reading my textbooks instead which I didn't do either ...haha). In fact, I hated reading and had no attention span or...more

We, the Sisterhood, hereby instate the following rules to govern the use of the Traveling Pants.
1.) You must never wash the Pants.
2.) You must never double-cuff the Pants. It's tacky. There will never be a time when this will not be tacky.
3.) You must never say the word "phat" while wearing the Pants. You must also never think "I am fat" while wearing the Pants...
So begins the first summer apart for four friends: Lena, who is going to visit her grandparent...more

They were just a soft, ordinary pair of thrift-shop jeans until the four girls took turns trying them on--four girls, that is, who are close friends, about to be parted for the summer, with very different sizes and builds, not to mention backgrounds and personalities. Yet the pants settle on each girl's hips perfectly, making her look sexy and long-legged and feel confident as a teenager can feel. "These are magical Pants!" they realize, and so they make a pact to share them equally, t...more

It seems that for as long as I can remember, I seek in entertainment the things that aren't present in my own life. As a child and a teenager, when life was placid except for the occasional ripple, I enjoyed on some level books and movies about upheaval and unrest, about people who suffer soemtimes awful things and who they become because of those things. I liked the angst and the suffering, or at least approached it in entertainment as a method of learning about a world that was so different ...more

This book is about four friends that have grown up together from birth. They're mothers are in a maternity class and that's how they meet. They have playdates with their children, Lena, Tibby, Brigette, and Carmen, which is how the girls meet. The beginning of the story is just introducing the relationship of the girls. It then transfers to the girls in a thrift store. Brigette picks up a pair of pants and tries them on, they fit her perfectly. Then Lena tries them on, they fit her perfectly. Ti...more

Once again, another book I just read because I saw the movie. This book however I was strangly disappointed by. I had seen the movie but now I wanted to read the book and in my opinion the movie is better. This book tells the story of 4 best friends who are very different but have never been separed for the summer (this summer will be the first). They go shopping, and find a pair of pants that happen to fit all of them so they decide to send the pants back and forth between each other throughout...more

My opinion on The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is that it is a little more complicated than it needs to be. I felt that the Author, Ann Brashares, writes in a way where she adds many words to describe things and events and it tends to get confusing.
The books story line is very fascinating indeed. It talks about four girls whose mothers all met in a aerobics class when they were pregnant, they were all born around the same time, and they all grew up together; as friends. As the...more

I read this book because it was recommended at my local library. And I was pleasantly surprised! It was nearly as sentimentally sappy as I thought it might be. Also, you aren't always rooting for the characters. Sometimes, you feel like throwing the book because they are acting like a bunch of idiots! But I like books that give me that kind of reaction, that make me get so involved in the story that I would resort to physical violence. :)

Bridget, Lena, Carmen, and Tibby are inseparable friends. But for the first time they won’t be spending the summer together. Bridget is off to soccer camp in Mexico, Lena is visiting her relatives in Greece, Carmen is seeing her father in Georgia, and Tibby is stuck at home. But right before they go their separate ways, they discover a pair of jeans that seems to fit each of them perfectly, even though they have different body types. This book has been sitting on my shelf for a young time and been on my to read list for while too. I did see the movie some time back before picking this up to read so I did find myself comparing the book and the movie. The book, as is the case when books get turn into a movie, is the better form but watching the movie before reading made it easier to picture characters and settings.

READ THE BOOK BEFORE YOU WATCH THE MOVIE. That is, if you watch the movie at all, which I don't reccomend. But the book is romantic and touching. It will make you laugh and cry at the same time. There are four girls who have been friends their whole lives; Bridget (Bee), Carmen, Lena, and Tibby.
Bridget is a great soccer player with beautiful blond hair. Carmen is a smart, hot-tempered Puerto Rican who treausures their friendship and works to keep them together. Lena is shy and trie...more

ok, so, quite honestly, i loved this movie and never read the books. but i figured, why not read them, plus my roommate has all four of them. and i'm on a YA kick. and my roommate is moving to san diego so i have to give her her books back. so i read this in two nights before bed, broken up with harry potter 6 read in the middle of them. i've been busy reading books that can be read in two or fewer sessions. anyway. i have to say i quite liked it. parts of it are annoyingly cheesy, meaning the q...more

YA fiction. Another of my California-bound friend's castoffs. I'm waaaaay too old to enjoy this now, but I probably would have liked it when I was 12.
I take issue with the title. While jeans are technically "pants," most people - especially teenaged girls - would just call them jeans.
Also, the "traveling pants" don't actually begin traveling amongst the girls until halfway through the book. Too much exposition in the beginning. That's not the only structural prob...more

Bridget, Lena, Tibby, and Carmen have been friends since birth. They've never seperated. But all that's about to change the summer of their 16th year. Bridget is going to soccer camp in Baja. Lena is going to visit her grandparents in Greece. Carmen's spending the summer with her dad in South Carolina. And Tibby is stuck at home, working the dullest job known to man and woman kind.
