Something's out there...

Reed Shelton organized this survival weekend. Hired the best guide in the region. Meticulously trained, studied, and packed while enouraging his wife, Beck, to do the same. But little did they know that surviving the elements would become the least of their worries.

During their first night of camping, an unearthly wail pierces the calm of the fore

Husband and Wife go on a hiking trip that she is less than thrilled about. When they hike up to the cabin they are supposed to meet their friend at, they find the place ransacked. Nervous that the place might have been burglarized, they camp out a ways from the cabin hoping their friend is just a little late. In the night they hear strange sounds and run from some kind of screaming animal. She gets abducted by these animals and soon finds out they are the closet thing to they mythical (or so she...more

This wasn't Peretti's best but it is entertaining and for people who enjoy a good mystery, adventure it's a fun ride. I love the way Peretti writes to give you a sense of simultaneous events.

If you are a busy person this is a great book to pick up as well because each chapter has a logical stopping point so you can mark your place and come back readily. Tho' it is pretty exciting and you may not want to do that.

He sure did a great job of creating the atmosphere in which this took place. You actu...more

Plot Summary: What happens, When & Where, Central Characters, Major Conflicts[return]Reed Shelton Thought that taking his wife Beck out to the woods for a survival Training course would be a great way to break her out of her extreme shyness. But the survival course turns out to be the real thing when they discover their guide has been killed and they encounter strange creatures in the night--strange creatures that abduct Beck. Now Reed must convince everyone--and himself--that he's not crazy...more

Frank Peretti is one of my favourite Christian fiction authors and I had no idea it s been so long since his last book. When I spied Monster on the shelf of one of our local bookstores, I dropped the two other books I was planning to buy and snatched this up immediately. This book marks Peretti s return after a 6 year hiatus and it s good to see that he did something with his time away from us. [return][return]Reed Shelton, together with his timid and reluctant wife Beck embarks on a survi...more

Up against the library wall, with no other viable audiobook choices, I selected this book. The writing is melodramatic and silly, but what made me like it was the reading by the author, who comes across as the narrator from the movie A Christmas Story on speed and tequila. When the poor stuttering heroine speaks, our reader makes it obvious that you are glad to not have been in the recording studio with him because the spit was certainly flying. When the Sasquatch groans, cries, sings, or scream...more

I usually enjoy Frank Peretti's books, but found this one a bit different... took me awhile to "get into" it. But, towards the middle, and especially the end of the book, it is very hard to put down! The writing can be a bit gruesome at times, but is not too "over the top". Without wanting to spoil the plot, I appreciate the premise of the book: "Left to his own devices, man will always create a monster!" I tend to agree with that... except I would add: especially when man leaves God out of the...more

Beck is not thrilled to be taking this survival weekend with her husband Reed. She isn’t a big fan of the outdoors, but Reed thinks a wild camping adventure is just the thing to cure her of her nervous stutter. During their first night of camping, a horrifying wail pierced the night. Then something emerges in the darkness and chases them through the forest. The last thing Reed sees is a huge, hairy creature carrying his wife away into the night.

The next morning, a rescue party sets out to track...more

I saw this browsing my library’s new ebook offerings and thought it sounded good and scary. After downloading the book, I learned it fell into the "Christian fiction" genre. Not being too sure what that meant in practical terms, but nonetheless pretty sure I was not the target audience, I figured it ultimately didn’t matter as long as the book delivered. And it did prove a pretty decent, fast-paced read, though not the thrill-ride I’d hoped given a title like Monster and the rousing reviews.

Rebecca Shelton, wife of a deputy sheriff in northwestern Idaho, claims she was recently held captive by a group of sasquatches. During the week long search to locate his wife, the sheriff's deputy was adamant that his wife had not been attacked by a bear, as Forest Service rangers claim. After an exhaustive search that left several members of the search party in the morgue, Rebecca Shelton was found in a remote area near Lost Creek. She states that she was rescued and held captive by a female s...more

Plot: The idea for this plot was good, however, when put to practice, I don't think it was quite up to par. There were several twists that kept the book interesting, but when I had finished, I didn't feel satisfied. There were several stories converging to make the sum of the book, and I think there might have been just a little too much happening.

Characters: There was not enough depth to the characters in this story. The first couple chapters give a little insight to the history of Beck, but ot...more

I first read Peretti’s work (This Present Darkness & Piercing the Darkness) when I was in school. I think it was 1989. I really liked the way he told a story. It really gave you a sense of watching events unfold in more than one location concurrently. I admired that ability in his storytelling, and picked up this book expecting no less.

Well, that was about all that I was happy to find present in this book. To say that this isn’t a good example of Peretti’s work is being generous.

Peretti has defined survival in this epic thriller. With readers (including myself) being constantly exposed to heart-stopping moments and mind-jarring mayhem, it is no wonder why Peretti ranks as one of the best writers of Christian Thrillers. A keen sense for detail and the human mindset can and will keep readers turning the page way past midnight. The sense of foreboding and foreshadowing of murders and betrayals abound every corner. Through it all, after the blood, the gore and the sacrifice...more

I like Peretti. A lot. Especially when he's dealing with spiritual warfare. He quite literally wrote the book on how the supernatural Christian thriller is done with his Darkness books. This one doesn't fall in the same vein. Not every book can be a writer's magnum opus. Sometimes he just writes an entertaining diversion. Nothing wrong with that. Peretti's frenetic pacing (I use that word as a compliment) is on display here, and the pages turn by themselves. The only problem is that the hook isn...more

I was a pretty harsh critic of this novel particularly in the beginning. This was a story (I suppose) of a woman's journey through fear. Beck, the major character, is a young woman on a camping trip which was designed by her husband, Reed, to help her regain her confidence. On the first night of their camping expedition, Beck and Reed become the hunted and ultimately a female Sasquatch absconds with Beck. Yes. A sasquatch.

The presentation of this creature immediately sparked my inner critic. I d...more

Peretti, one of the most famous Christian novelists, sure knows how to write a brilliantly-paced, roller coaster ride of a book! Having heard great things about this author along with reading an earlier work, The Present Darkness, I gave Monster a try. The earlier novel, which was steeped in Christian theology and genre, is a contrary work to Monster that explores the popular myth of Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch.

Reed and Beck Shelton, a happily married couple where the extroverted husband,...more

I read This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness as a high schooler, and I all could remember is that I really liked Peretti's work. This novel was not at all what I remember about those pieces. It's not that I no longer like Peretti, but I'm just not entirely keen on reading literature about Bigfoot. It was a bit intriguing and suspenseful, but the dialogue was rather expected and flat. He could have intensified the plot with more expressive metaphors and allusions, and though Christianit...more

Jono and I listened to this audio book on our trip to and from my sister's for Thanksgiving. An interesting suspense story - campers are strangely attacked one night. The husband watches a creature take his wife and as the sheriff's deputy, he rounds up search and rescue workers to help him find her. At first, they aren't sure whether to believe his tale and think they suffered from a bear attack. Others think he killed his wife and is trying to cover it up. Friends of his discover some strange...more

I picked this book up at the library without knowing anything about it other than the title and the plot as described on the jacket. They should really mention that it is christian fiction somewhere on the jacket. I got roughly half way through the book when it occurred to me that the Christianity was being poured on a little thick. I looked into who the author was and it turns out he is a writer of christian fiction. I wasted my time reading half of a book I never would have touched, because it...more

Were you ever afraid of Monsters when you were a kid? If so, this book will more than likely make that fear resurface. When a science experiment goes terribly wrong, people have more to fear than just the monsters in their heads. I know, its sounds terribly cliché, but the end result is anything but. Peretti has you both afraid for your life and curious about these monsters at the same time. Do you hate them or do you sympathize with them? Who hasn't been on the outside of society, trying to get...more

I've become a great Peretti fan. In Monster, a couple goes to a National Park area to hike and camp. Before fellow camping members joined them, their lives became complicated. Hearing women's screams in the night and something rushing their camp, their became separated. Beck was rescued--by a female sasquatch. Reed and others started a massive search for her which turned up bodies all killed in the same manner. Bears or Sasquatch??? Cap follows a hunch to a college laboratory invested in genetic...more

This book was absolutely amazing! It had every little detail planned out, it waqs a mystery and a drama, romantic and a sci-fi, it was gory, but had little bits of comedy mixed in. I suggest the youngest person to read this book should be in 7th grade, because of the gore and some words (I couldn't understand some, so I had to assume what they meant or look it up in a dictionary). There were some long conversations between two scientist, which I thought were somewhat boring, but, mainly because...more

I'm not far enough into the book to really know if I'll like it or not. To me this book is starting slowly. I'm currently on page 27 and will hopefully begin to get into this book. I can already tell that what is going to happen in this book would not happen in real life so that is kind of a turnoff. This book is a little like the other Frank Peretti book I read about something being in the woods.

This week I'm on page 85 and I'm still not loving the book. It had a really descriptive scene of on...more

Wow! What a crazy 'out there' kind of story! Not my typical choice, but because it was so highly recommended and because I love Frank Peretti, I read it and .....loved it! The story had me puzzled and trying to figure out what was going on the whole time, but in a fun 'I have to find out' way. The evolution/creation debate is strongly present and in more than one way. There was an obvious genetics argument going on, but also an underlying theme showing the problems that arise when one rules out...more

I had high expectations, and they were met. Frank Peretti does not disappoint :)

The book started out great, really held my attention. It was interesting how much research was conducted by the author to make this story work. Sadly, the suspense drops significantly once we start reading about the wife's whereabouts. The story was still enjoyable to read, however I think that the author should have waited till later on in the story to disclose the wife's point of view; it would have made a much more suspenseful novel. None the less, not too bad a read, some intriguing shifts...more

I was always surprised, while reading, when I came to a point where I thought the book was almost over several times only to discover half the book (give or take) still to go. So Peretti did an excellent job keeping the story going despite what could have been a fairly short story.

Was also happy that it didn't hit you over the head despite being Christian fiction. There was some, of course, though this being the genre I consider that unavoidable and happy that it rarely seemed out of place.

Still...more
