This was unexpectedly brilliant. I was expecting another typical vampire YA book. Instead, I got a kickass main character. Hunter Wild is not afraid to get her hands dirty. She slays vampires, she's not a damsel in distress, she doesn't like it when boys make decisions for her. She actually cares about her best friend. Her best friend is actually crucial to the plot. I really don't know where to start. I love the Drake Chronicles, each book so far centres around one particular member of the Drake family. The family tree shown at the beginning highlights the characters to be focused on while showing the connection to the other characters.

I really don't feel as if I can go into to much plot detail with this book as it will certainly spoil the enjoyment of reading it yourself. I really don't feel as if I can go into to much plot detail with this book as it will certainly spoil the enjoyment of reading it yourself. Let me just say that I have not been disappointed yet with any of these books and this is no exception.

It is a brilliant piece of craftsmanship how Alyxandra Harvey is able to write a story with central characters and yet still progress the other characters that we have already come to know in the previous books. Nicholas and Lucy/Kieran and Soalnge from My Love Lies Bleeding alongside Logan and Isabeau from Blood Feud. Having chatted to a few authors on twitter and knowing that the characters actually talk to them inside their heads; makes me wonder what on earth must be going on inside Alyxandra's head. All the characters are well developed, easy to relate to (you can even sympathize with the Drake's craving for blood) and their interactions are realistic.

This story revolves around Hunter, the last in a long line of prestigious Helios-Ra agents. Revolving around the inner workings of the Helios-Ra training school. Great insight into how the other side work, giving a rounded picture of both the Vampires and the Helios-Ra. Some incredible twist and turns, leaving the reader wondering just who are the 'enemy'. Courageous, loyal with some kicking martial arts skills, Hunter is a great role model. Here connection to Kieran adds to the storyline and parallels the Quinn/Solange relationship dynamics.

I absolutely adored how Quinn was portrayed; although not my 'type' you can appreciate his appeal. A true 'ladies' man playing the field with unabashed fervour. That is until he meets Hunter. They are inexplicably draw to each other, although they both try to ignore it initially. It brought to mind the ideal of soul-mates and how you cant fight your destiny.

I could continue to waffle about how great the Drake Chronicles are but I will spare you. I will leave you with this - Out For Blood is the latest great addition to a phenominal series.

I always have a blast reading The Drake Chronicles and Out for Blood is no exception. There are certain elements that I require for a good vampire tale and this book ticks all the boxes - fast paced plot, action and adventure, witty dialogue and a delicious romance.

First of all this is not your average vampire tale. It has such a unique concept with the Helios-Ra, the hounds, the Host, and the Hel-Blar. In this installment Harvey focuses mostly on the Helio-Ra Academy where they train teenagers the skills to kill vampires. While the writing is good and the plot captures your attention (I devoured it in one day), it is a tad bit predictable. Don't get me wrong, there are some little surprises along the way but you know in the end the guy and the girl are going to up end together and of course save the day. But I like it that way. It is nice to have a series that doesn't need to end of a cliffhanger or with a break up.

Each installment focuses on a different member of The Drake family (expect book one which had Solange and Nicholas Drake). Out For Blood is Quinn Drake and Hunter Wild's story. And let me tell you I have been waiting for Quinn's tale (I have been drooling over him since book 1). Apart from being delicious, he has an energetic attitude and is a big flirt. While Hunter is strong and fierce but a sweetheart. Not only can she kick some butt but she is the type of girl who you would want to be friends with. Quinn and Hunter relationship is filled with lots of flirting making for sizzling chemistry. It also a lot of fun and it is nice change from all those intense paranormal romances.

We also get to visit some of our favourite couples and characters from the previous books. I love getting a glimpse of what is going on in Lucy and Nicholas' lives. I love their snarky but sweet banter toward each other.

Overall, Out for Blood won't disappoint fans of this series.

Still, so much dame fun!!

Out for Blood is another great installment in the Drake Chronicles where we learn more about Kieran's best friend/sister, Hunter Wild, who's a vampire hunter trainee, a kick ass fighter and can't help fall for one of the delicious Drake boys; Quinn.

I really enjoyed both Hunter and Quinn's POV. Hunter is a very level headed, strong and independent character who isn't one of these damsel in distress kinda gals. Not to say that she isn't vulnerable, but it's awesome to see...more

The funny thing is that I didn't read the first two books.

Oops!

Okay, okay, it's mostly my fault. I really didn't feel the first book and I couldn't really find the second book, so I just grabbed the third one and said 'What the hell!' and dived in. Turns out, it was easy to understand what was going on.

I'm not really into reading vampire stories after the Twilight Saga but I received a copy of Ruling Passion (My Love Lies Bleeding, Blood Feud and Out for Blood) for an award.

As always a little background first. Out for Blood is the third book in the Drake Chronicles preceded by Hearts at Stake which was about Solage, the first girl vampire to be born in the Drake Family, and her best friend Lucy, a normal human with careless parents, and after that one came Blood Feud the story of Isabel Croix, a French girl who was turned against her will and sought revenge, and Logan, a Drake brother who is romantic and likes to dress like a pirate.

Hearts at Stake was great, Blood Feud was okay, and Out For Blood is awesome. Out for Blood is the story of Hunter, a girl with talent who is a vampire hunter, and Quinn, the charismatic Drake brother who always gets all the girls. That is until his eyes wander to Hunter and he becomes perplexes by her. He wants to go out with her, to kiss her, to taste her. But don't think of him as only a ladies man, he would also protects his family, specially his little sister, until his very last breath.

Hunter on the other hand, though attracted to Quinn, has bigger problems on her hands when evil vampires start attacking the vampire hunters school and everybody left and right start dropping like flies because of this weird flu. Soon enough Quinn and Hunter will have to work together to figure out what exactly is going on with both the attacks and the sickness. And while they are doing that why not have a bit of fun too?

I thought this book was awesome! I loved Hunter's character, and also loved Quinn. He is a sweetheart. One of my complaints with Blood Feud was that the book was way too concentrated on the girl and so Logan's character kind of was left in the back burner, but I think that with this book Alyxandra redeemed herself. Sure we get more Hunter time than Quinn time, but at least we get to see him be, well, himself. We get to know him, and that is what ultimately counts. And Hunter totally has the vampire slayer thing down (Quinn often teases her by calling her "Buffy").

Out for Blood is a well balanced ride. You got your action, mystery and romance ready to go. And trust me you want to go. It entertained me beyond belief, and I only read it in a couple of days at most (I would have happily read it in one sitting, but I was sort of busy with real life). The romance was believable! There was no "I met you and I love you", the romance grew with the characters, and it wasn't rushed. Yay! And also, as always, you get too see old characters and other plot lines evolving in the background. I'm telling you, I think the Drake Chronicles is like a Black Dagger Brotherhood but for Young Adults that concentrates more on the female character.

Finally, if you have the chance to read this series go ahead! It's fast paced, light reading that you won't regret. Out for Blood made my day.(less)

So, I was really looking forward to this book, but I'm not going to lie, it was mostly because I heard Quinn Drake was out new star.

So maybe he totally fits the stero-type of a pretty boy, what's wrong with that? Helena Drake has just become vampire queen and are all official freaking royalty. But just because Montmarte is dead doesn't mean that revenge seeking Hosts aren't still out there.

I really loved the first book, Hearts at Stake, getting to know all of the Drake vampires and their history and to learn about the different types of vampires and vampire politics in author Alyxandra Harvey’s world. It was fun to see the interaction of not only the family with each other but with Solange’s (the only Drake daughter) human friend Lucy, as well as with other humans who happen to be vampire hunters in an organization known as Helios-Ra, since the majority of humans do not know about the existence of vampires and this group plans to keep it that way. In the second book, Blood Feud we learn more about the group of vampires known as the Hounds, and though we still see glimpses of all of the characters from the first book as they continue to face a common enemy in the form of Monmarte, this one focuses on Solange’s brother Logan and a fairly new French Hound named Isabeau St. Croix, who’s hellbent on taking revenge on a vampire named Greyhaven, who turned her a couple of hundred years ago against her will and attempted to make her into a Hel-Blar. While I really liked it and it helped advance the story of the Drakes and other characters, it wasn’t my favorite and I missed the characters from the first book. Though Logan’s attachment to all things velvet and ruffled was funny to read about.

In the third installment in the series, as hinted at at the end of the second book, the focus shifts to Quinn Drake, seemingly the biggest Lothario of the Drake clan, and a hunter named…wait for it…Hunter. As with the other stories, this one is told in the alternating voice of each of the main characters. With this book, the Drake farm and surrounding area and caves aren’t the main settings for the story, as much of it takes place where Hunter goes to school, the Helios-Ra Academy. Since Monmarte and Greyhaven, the vampire goons who harassed the Drakes and others in the first two books, are now dead, the new enemy, which is an old one, is the Hel-Blar, who are becoming bolder and more unified in their attacks. There are also a couple of strange things going on at the Academy, with some kids getting seriously ill with a flu that’s going around and talk of vitamins being sold around campus that help students become better fighters. In order to figure out what’s going on at her school, Hunter Wild, who comes from a long line of hunters who don’t believe in any treaties with vampires, has to rely on a vampire, namely Quinn, to help her get to the bottom of the mysteries.

As with the last book, previously seen characters are still around and some play a slightly bigger role in this book than in the last and new Drake brothers who were briefly introduced before make very small appearances in this book.

I like that all three books take place within about six weeks of each other and that each story focuses on a new member of the family. The wit, sarcasm and intrigue that were in the first two books are present in this one as well, though Harvey steps up the romance a bit more and isn’t shy about throwing out a few more cuss words, which is more believable ‘cause if I have a friend whose personality is changing and others who are falling sick while vampires are trying to take me out, “darn it” just isn’t going to cut it when I’m spouting off. The change in scenery was great, as was the addition of Hunter’s friends from school, who really added to the story. I hope we get to see more of Hunter and her friends as I really liked reading about them and thought the romance between Quinn and Hunter was one of the best yet. Harvey has also altered what we thought we knew about the outcome of vampire attacks and has brought about some shocking changes for one of the main characters, though I’m not saying any more than that about either topic, because I don’t want to give anything major away.

Since there are four brothers left I hope Ms. Harvey has at least four more books planned (my money for the next one is on Connor), and if she keeps writing them as well as she did this one, I’d like her to go beyond that number. Can’t wait for the next one!

I love the world Alyxandra Harvey has created-the various vampire tribes and the vampire politics are always intriguing. Out for Blood has a bit of a forbidden romance feel because Hunter is a vampire hunter and Quinn is a vampire prince. The romance is full of witty banter and steamy kisses which makes it that much more fun!

Out for Blood has more a mystery feel to it than the other Drake Chronicles books and I felt that made it even better and really made it stand out within the series. The mystery was engaging and the plot was fast paced. I liked getting an inside look at the Helios-Ra group-I hope we get to explore their world more.

I really enjoyed getting to know both Hunter and Quinn (I still love Lucy and Nicholas the best, but Hunter and Quinn are great rivals for that top spot!) I thought Hunter would annoy me with her vampire hunter background, but she's a fun paradox-a vampire hunter that wants to dress up and not always fight and who isn't blinded by the all vampires are evil doctrine. Quinn is a player, but he quickly grew on me too and it's fun to see how Hunter gets into his head-she's not a wimpy wilting girl, but can hold her own against him and that's what makes their romance fun to read.

Not only do we get to know Hunter and Quinn, but we also get to visit characters from the previous two books and get a glimpse into what's going on with the Drake family as a whole, as well as the two main characters in this outing. I love Alyxandra Harvey is able to weave everyone's stories together so we always get to keep up with the characters we've met in the previous novels.

Out for Blood is another fun offering into the fantastic Drake Chronicles series. Even if you're feeling a bit burnt out on vampire stories, give The Drake Chronicles a try-this family is hard to resist!

I remember Quinn from previous snippets of previous books, and always wrote him off as a bit too much of a womaniser and a little... selfish, I guess is the word I’d use. But from his first chapter I realised just how wrong I was: he was (like all his brothers) unbelievably protective of Solange, his baby sister, totally hot and so sweet it was untrue. And I swear he had me laughing from his more or less his first line. I actually had to hide my face in a pillow to keep from waking the house up (it was so addictive I couldn’t stop reading: I kept going past midnight).
But, amazing a character as he undeniably is, he’s overshadowed by Hunter. She’s everything you want in a heroine: strong-willed, funny, totally independent and really compassionate. And I love the fact that she’s so committed to her duty, yet absolutely thrilled at the treaty between the Drakes and the hunters. I also love her name, it completely suits her. But mostly I like how she’s smart enough and brave enough to deal with the difficult subjects, and how she doesn’t need saving, even though she’s a human.
I’m undecided who my favourite couple is – the previous two are in it, and there’s this scene with Lucy that had me crying with laughter – but these one is definitely another winner. How Alyxandra manages to create such brilliant people and such a brilliant world still manages to entrance me: I just love all of them, and can’t wait to see who the next book’s about, and to know more about all the “yummy” Drake boys.
And even better about this book: although I saw a couple of the twists coming, there were ones I didn’t and a major one at the end which I definitely didn’t expect. It kept me guessing, laughing, addicted and reading. The only bad thing: it ended far too soon... and I have to wait a year until the next one. I’m certain it will absolutely be worth the wait though, and will be all the better for it: good things come to those that wait, right?(less)

I liked this one the best out of the three Drake Chronicles so far. They've all been entertaining with engaging characters, but this one seemed to most fleshed out & it had a good mystery throughout with a twist at the end.

In it, Harvey continues to work her paranormal magic focusing on Quinn one of the twins that make up the middle of the Drake brood.

Action packed from the jump Harvey wasted no time getting into the meat of the story by throwing the Drakes directly into the middle of Helios-Ra — an organization sworn to kill vampires. Specifically, the story focuses on it’s prep-school for budding hunters. Not wanting to spoil the plot of the story for you all I can say is that there is something nefarious afoot at this prestigious academy, something that it’s administration is chocking up to Hel-Blar and a variety of other vampires.

Told in alternating points of view the story follows Quinn and Hunter Wild, a student at the academy and decedent of a renowned family of vampire-hunters. Sure there is some serious bigotry at work in the family (as evidenced by the role her grandfather plays in the story) but not from Hunter herself. In fact, Hunter takes quite a liking to Quinn and by liking I mean she’s got the hottie hot hots! And dude, I can say, who can blame a girl?

As far as characterizations go, Quinn is my favorite of the Drake family thus far. Of course, it’s not hard for him to do since you all know I love me a bad boy with a heart of gold. Naturally he was going to resonate for me. What I liked best about Quinn was that he was just the right level of arrogant, his cockiness wasn’t unappealing or overbearing to me. It was, in fact, quite charming. A ladies man, he never had to work hard for attention from any woman he set his sights on. Except maybe Hunter, he definitely had to work a little harder than usual for her.

Hunter was equally appealing. Strong and empowered she wasn’t falling all over Quinn the moment she saw him. Sure, she was interested but I liked that she wasn’t sitting around her dorm room pining away for him. In fact, she continually challenged him and tried to distance herself. But you know how things like that typically work out right? Not so easy! Especially when there are circumstances that continually threw them together.

The circumstance of most importance was the siege on the Helios-Ra Academy by some unknown group. Thought to be vampire based Hunter, some of her classmates, Kieran and Quinn start to work the case. It is during their inquiries that Quinn and Hunter bond. But, I’ll say that while romance is definitely in the air it plays a relatively small part of the story. The bulk of the story focuses on Hunter and the events at school. Which, being honest, I quite enjoyed. Don’t get me wrong the romance was enjoyable as well but it wasn’t the whole purpose of the story. In that way Out For Blood was quite evenly told.

Speaking of how the story is told I give Harvey props for the transitional nature of the series. Instead of going the route of continuing the same large story over the entire series she chooses to focus on something new for each book while maintaining certain elements over time. She ends one book by bringing it’s main plot to a conclusion but then still threads in an inkling of what the next story will be throughout. I also enjoy that even though the story in the book is new and shifts focus to a different member of the clan Harvey doesn’t entirely forget those characters that preceded. It’s written where the reader knows the primary focus is on one member of the family (in this case Quinn) yet I still knew what was going on with the rest. Out for Blood was no different in that regard, I enjoyed revisiting Lucy, Nicolas, Solange and Kieran. In fact, the latter is who tied in the new heroine Hunter. It was an excellent transition to make. We also got a sneak peek at Quinn’s twin brother and computer geek du jour Connor who I presume will be the focus of the next story.

As I’ve mentioned before, this is one of my favorite series going right now. It’s fun, at times humorous, filled with interesting and dynamic characters who take the reader on a thrilling ride. Definitely one to put on your shelves.(less)

Hunter hears a rumor about mysterious pills that students are taking and believe these pills make explain Chloe’s weird behavior. In addition, a huge band of Hel-Blar threaten vampire hunters and vampires alike. The hunters have an alliance with certain vampire families, such as the Drakes, and so Hunter enlists the help of Quinn Drake in trying to solve all the mysteries facing Helios-Ra.

This book was so much fun to read that I didn’t want it to end. Hunter is an amazing protagonist. While she seems perfect, Chloe often complains, she is actually very real. She gets good grades because she studies and her grandfather raised her with a strong work ethic. She’s strong, but not invincible. Unlike other female heroines, she cannot take on a horde of blood-thirsty vampires by herself. She actually needs help. But that’s okay because she has a solid group of quirky, easy-to-love friends. And while Hunter may be good-looking, her flirting skills leave something to be desired.

The best thing about Out for Blood is the dialogue. It is witty and charming and so fast-paced that these characters jump out of the pages. Most notably, Quinn has the best quips and snarky, yet seductive lines. The great thing about Quinn is that his appeal doesn’t stem purely from good looks - though those certainly don’t hurt - but also from his charm and charisma. It’s easy to see why girls fall for him and also easy to understand why he falls for Hunter. Refreshingly, these two don’t fall in love. They certainly fall for each other, but love is never mentioned, nor the idea that they are soul mates and will be together forever. For once, they just plain like each other and develop a natural, believable relationship.

The other great thing about this book is that the romantic relationship is not the entire focus. The mystery of what the pills are and why students are falling ill is gripping and unpredictable. The ending really surprised me. Interwoven throughout the story are fast-paced, fun fight scenes that maintain a sense of action and solidify the world of Violet Hill. Quinn’s nickname for Hunter, “Buffy,” completely fits in this world. It also highlights the balance between the modern real-world and the paranormal aspects of the book. Alyxandra Harvey does an excellent job merging these two worlds, describing text messages alongside stakes. Out for Blood is a thrilling book, sure to satisfy followers of The Drake Chronicles itching for another glimpse into Violet Hill and the alluring Drake family.(less)

I love the Drake Chronicles. What isn't to love about seven overprotective, really hot, vampire brothers? If you ask the ladies who fall for them (like me), the answer is NOTHING!

What’s Good About It

If you’ve read my review of the previous two installments in this series, you’ll know that I think they are full of unrealised potential. It’s much the same with Out For Blood. Harvey continues with her comfortably successful formula, introducing a new female character to be a love interest for the next Drake in line. Frothy fun ensues with much ‘he was so hot’ and ‘I couldn’t explain why I was so obsessed with her’, but not a lot of character development.

The reason I'm giving this book two (2) stars is because the author focused more on the heroine, Hunter's, POV more than the hero, Quinn's, who is an actual Drake. Why call the series "The Drake Chronicles" when you're not even going to focus on the Drakes?

This is possibly the best book in the Drake Vampire series yet.

There were some decent mystery angles, and the Buffy/Quinn angle and connection was tinglingly good AND laugh out loud funny.

As usual, with an Alyxandra Harvey book, the narration was simple and easy to follow, whilst peppered with witty observations and sharp edged characters. I would say there was a little more description in this book than in previous books and I really liked that.

Hunter was raised by her grandfather after her parents died, and is at the top of her class when it comes to vampire hunting. But, with a little influence from Kieran and the new leader of the Helios-Ra, the tension she feels in the presence of the Drakes eases and Quinn works his way under her skin. The idea of dating a human girl is nothing new to Quinn, though he's never been serious with one. Both characters are so likable and as always with Harvey's characters, they are very honorable and loyal. Hunter turns to Quinn with evidence of drug distribution in the Helios-Ra's school and the dangerous side effects it could be responsible for. Together they work to discover the source of the medication. As, I said the plot was great until the end. I don't do spoilers, so I can't really explain too much, but the reasoning for the medication being distributed is revealed and it just seemed far fetched and rediculous. Also, there is a new vampire and I really didn't get why this person was changed and others did not? I recommend reading the book of course, especially if you enjoyed the first two. There's several more books in the series to come, more brothers to get to know and there is definately something unusual going on with Solange that left me wondering. I suspect Chloe, Hunter's roomate, and Conner, Quinn's twin brother, will be the next lovebirds? This family is continuing to build some strong alliances, I bet it's going to come in handy later!(less)
