The premise of this book is that Hill Harper (an actor I'm not really familiar with from CSI: NY) was inspired by the book Letters to a Young Poet and decided to write a book similiar to that for young African American males. He said that the letters were based on questions he's gotten from fans in emails, letters, and when he talks to kids at schools, etc.

That being said I was excited to see someone taking the time to be a positive role model for young men. When I saw this book I thought it w
Black male struggle seems to be a clique them that finds its way into American society. Though this theme may seem redundant, repetitive and continuous, the truth of the matter is that there is a struggle with Black men in America as there is one in many other countries. Reading "Letters to a Young Brother", I felt as though many of the themes concerning Black men such as personal success, respect for your brother and mother, taking responsibility for your life and actions, and many more were to ...more

Hill Harper gives a young man the tools required in order to be someone notable in a tough generation via e-mail. Young Brotha is that young man. He’s very confused about his life and is seeking somewhat of a father figure which he’s never had to help him traverse through life’s many obstacles. It all started with one letter. Hill eventually befriends Young Brotha, and they begin to exchange letters. Like every young man, Young Brotha is faced with adversity and Hill provides him advice on how ...more

OK, I have to quality my rating for this book. I didn't really enjoy it that much, mostly because his voice and writing style seem forced and unconvincing.

HOWEVER...I understand that I am not the intended audience for this book, and that's why I give it 5 stars. The intended readers are teenage males. And considering how frustrating I find it that so few celebrity males go this far out of their way to be role models for youth, how could I really criticize this guy for not being the best writer

Hill harper wrote a great meaningfulbook for young adults. The events in the book were based on the experiences Harper had mentoring kids. Harper gives the kidd some good advice from his perspective . Then he would call up and contact one of his close friends and they would give the kid some good advice too. Throughout the book Harper and the kid did not communicate through phone calls, in person but through emails.through the phone or even in person it was through emails. Also in the book he ta ...more

"Unreasonably Happy" Thank you Hill Harper for Letters to a Young Brother. This is a must read for every young man. If you have a son, young brother or just know a young man I recommend you gift this book to them. The principles Hill Harper shares and teaches young brother are lessons everyone can benefit from especially young men.

Read this a few years ago. As a woman, I liked the perspective of reading a book by a man for men. The author excellently spoke to the choices of young men and how those impact the growth and development of adult men.

Forget about the title. Hill Harper has crafted a fabulous book that will appeal to nearly all teens -- not just at-risk African-American boys. While the book speaks directly to African-American males, its smart yet cool approach to the problems that plague all teens, but particularly young people who are poor or members of a minority group, will also be a hit with girls and members of other beleaguered minority groups, as well. The language is laden with slang but intelligent, and both Harper a ...more

Let's be honest: I'm not exactly the target audience for this book. But I read it because I work with high school boys and was hoping it would live up to its hype as an inspirational, real book for young men,
and it did. I like Hill Harper a lot after reading this book. He comes across as caring, accessible, and honest. His advice is clear and easy to understand, and he calls on other role models (Barack Obama, Venus Williams, Nas) to help him tackle the issues in the book (school, family, sex,

The book "Letters to a Young Brother: MANifest Your Destiny (Paperback)" is a compelling book that I think all young men should read. What I like about this book is that it spoke the truth, even though it was published in 2006 the problems that youths and young brothers are facing are still going on today four years later. I like the way the author connected the different letters that he recieved to his personal life. If I were the author I would write a book to the females in this world, becuas ...more

I think this book was very beneficial. Hill Harper had a program called Manifest your destiny, and I attended and that is were I found the book. This book is beneficial in many ways of telling me how to become a young man by him giving lots of his experiences in his life leading up to his success of being an actor. I want to be An actor so he gave me tips on what I need to do before getting to that point. He also gave very important details about his life which told the reader or audience that t ...more

Recommends it for: young people in particular but all people would love it
I picked this book up because it was chosen as THE Best Book for Young People by the American Library Association for 2007. That is quite an endorsement. I had never heard of the author or seen his TV show.

"Letters to a Young Brother: MANifest Your Destiny" was outstanding! I wish I could put a copy in every single young person's hands. While the title implies that the book is especially relevant title for young black males, anyone would find this book inspirational.

I loved hearing about Hill's

Letters to a Young Brother was about letters to young to be the best they can be in life. Hill Harper talk about what a man suppose to do and what they gotta be in life. All of the letters guide them to solve their problems in life to make things better.

In the beginning of the book hill Harper give quotes from different celebrity that can lift people up. The quotes give a powerful message to people male or female to never give up. The quotes were the best part of the book that inspire me to m

Hill Harper is an actor, but he is so much more. A classmate of Barak Obama's at Harvard Law, he is also a motivational speaker who spends his free time talking to high school students about making the right decisions.

He has written this book for the young men he speaks to all over the US as a series of letters. In each one he answers a fictional question from his "young brother", dispensing advice on how to cope with things like girl problems, school issues and money. The book also includes ad

This is a must read for every young man coming into adolescence! This book speaks to all the questions that our youth are confronted with as African American males. The book is composed of various letters written between a teenager and Hill Harper chatting it up from a male perspective addressing the good, bad and ugly of reality for a young black male growing up in the hood. Hill gives true answers and guidance to young men in search of answers from their past, present and future, an amazing re ...more

Letters to a Young Brother

The book 'Letters To A Young Brother' is a great book. It has so many things that I have learned and I can use some of those things in everyday life. It teaches you some important outlooks on life and how you should think positive and believe in yourself. It teaches you how to live like a man and to do that, you have to have respect for people and even if they disrespect you, you need to be the bigger person. It is very educational on teaching you how to live a good, ou

In my best opinion this book is really good. Even though it has no plot or series to the book, the book itself is still good because it helps many kids with problems think about life more. During my reading of "Letter to a Young Brother" it was an interesting thing to read on how helpful this book can be for students with many problems. The book is about this man named "Hill Harper" and yes he is a real person. Hill writes letters about how people can be proactive and good about being alive rig ...more

This book should added to an arsenal of books given to young Black males in particular. Mr. Harper writes well and intelligently. He is quite revealing about his personal life and decisions he's made on his way to being an actor. He is Harvard-educated and quite smart, serious about his craft, an activist just an all around good man.
One issue he didn't tackle was his height. I met him and he is quite short. I am sure he may have been teased about being sort or advised not to pursue acting becaus

What i learned from this book is that many male figures have different perspectives on what a man is and how some things should be handled. I liked this book because Hill was writing to a young fellow about the typical things young guys usually go through. I didn't agree with Hill on a few advices to his young brother like choosing a pet and pretending to be like it just to have confidence in his self. This book reminded me of when my older male figures tell me these sames advices as Hill becaus ...more

My review may be slightly biased since I am a big Hill Harper fan, however, I think that this book can be very helpful for young men struggling to find their way. His voice is that of a big brother and positive male role model that all young men need growing up. He illustrates his points well and supports those points with inspirational stories and quotes.

I am pretty new at writing reviews for books and would rather not go too much into detail but overall I would say that if you are teen to you

I got this book for free cause Hill Harper was a celebrity guest speaker at the big brother fundraising program that we hosted recently in January.

If you don't know who he is, Hill Harper is an actor on CSI: NY. He graduated Brown summa cum laude and then went to Harvard Law.

Its a good book for teens. Its focused really for teens from the projects or rough areas. But its great for any teen that needs encouragement, support and guidance. I would highly recommend that you give this

Inspiring book. I received this book on my 29th bday and i was taken back because of the title (thinking this book was for teens) but it was an excellent book. Practical life lessons that any man can take to define them and the atomosphere for thier future. I applaude Hill Harper for covering issues and having the forsight that a lot of young bothers well men in general are not getting in their homes and their community. Will definitely buy a few and put them in the hands of some Young Brothers.

I thought the book was very interesting and enlightening. Hill Harpers book helps give young men a positive outlook on life. Letters to a Young Brother: Manifest Your Destiny is based on concerns and issues that young men face today. Many of the young men didn't have positive role models and were in need of guidance. They wrote letters to Hill Harper and he answered them with positive and honest advice. I think that every young man should read this book because it may answer some of your questio ...more

Letters To a Young Brother is a deep book written by Hill Harper. This book was based on a true story and tells the mentoring that Hill Harper has done. He has guided alot of lost young men that look up to Hill Harper. In this book a lot of young men were going through depression of not having a father in their lives or a positive male figure in general.
