Drake researched her own family's roots in Scotland all the way back to the Middle Ages for this new series, which explores the history and lore of the 12th-century war of the Highlands.

In the days when Scotland lay under siege, King David sought loyal warriors who would fight with their blood and hea

This is your classic medieval romance. Set in Scotland in the early 12th century, it is a time of political unrest as Vikings, Scots, & English are all vying for power. The hero, Waryk de Graham is Scottish King David's champion. The heroine, Mellyora McAdin is the king's godchild. King David decides it would be a politically correct maneuver to arrange a marriage between these two, as the land Mellyora would bring into the union (Blue Isle) is prime seaside property ...ideally situated to s ...more
The characters were awful, the romance was awful, the pace was awful...the history was good. But it was interesting to note that while the history was good, there were terrible anachronisms everywhere. Our erstwhile heroine compares herself to the female lion who does the hunting for her mate. Why a girl in 12th century Scotland would know anything about lions in particular is unclear. But the role of female lions was unknown until fairly recently and would have been as unknown to the woman as t ...more

Bu kitabın yorumuna nereden başlayım bilemiyorum yayınevinin berbat çevirisi ve editörünün kitabı kontrol etmeden baskıya gönderip bizim sırf imla hataları, yazım hataları, eksik kalan bağlaçlar vs. yoksun kalmamıza neden olmasından mı? Yoksa yazarın absürd bir İskoç karakteri oluşturmasından mı, emin değilim. Yayınevi kitabı öyle iç içe geçirmiş ki hangi paragrafta kim konuşuyor birbirine karışmış. Hoş olmamış. Hele "Aye" kelimesini çevirmeden direk koymaları saçmalığın önce gideniydi, öyle
I found this to be a fascinating story. I wanted to stay up all night and finish but, alas, my mind and body had other ideas. Drake certainly did her homework regarding this historical period and the way she wound this love story around the political unrest of the time was terrific.

Waryk de Graham is one of King David's greatest warriors. So great, that he has been knighted Lord Lion. Waryk came to be in the King's good graces during a battle that found his father and several family members kil

Maybe it's just because this is a very old book from this writer, but I was horribly unimpressed with the writing. The story and historical facts were good, but holy crow the word she was used so frequently that I wanted to rip the pages out and burn the book. I had a hard time getting through this one
Couldn't finish it. I LOVE her books, this one is like it was written by a commpletly different author.
The story line was good - kept me reading, but I found myself skipping through pages of unimportant stuff. It's very obvious that the author did her research about the setting and the history, but I think too much was included. This book is a little hard to read when all I'm looking for is a easy-to-read romance.

Regarding the plot - the characters weren't too bad. Their arguing, which went about 3/4 of the way through the book was really irritating. It seems that our heroine just wanted to be c

1st in the Medieval Scottish Series A Worthy Read!

This is the first in a series of Drake's (aka Heather Graham) historical novels of the Graham clan (the next: CONQUER THE NIGHT, SEIZE THE DAWN, KNIGHT TRIUMPHANT, THE LION IN GLORY, WHEN WE TOUCH and THE QUEEN'S LADY). I’ve read them all and thoroughly enjoyed them.

Set in 12th century Scotland when King David I reigned, it begins as our hero, Waryk de Graham is 14 and on the battlefield with his father and uncle, both of whom are slain. In a her

I liked the other 2 Graham novels better ('Knight Triumphant' with Eric & Lady Ingrainia and 'The Lion in Glory' with Eric's cousin Jamie & lady Christina) - but I liked the historical details on this too; learned all about Vikings, Norse and Danes and the berserkers! Waryk is also a compelling character, however, Mellyora can be a bit too much. At some point I wanted to put her in a straight jacket. I still give this 4 stars since it's part of the Graham series and very interesting hist ...more

Twelfth Century Scotland. Vikings, Normans, Scots and English all vying for land. A Young Scot - the king's Champion is given land and the unwed daughter of the deceased Laird as a bride. As is typical in these stories they hate each other, love each other and all ends happily ever after. I love a good romance and this certainly was a good one.

"Seni çekici buluyordum ama seninle evlenirken iki ucu keskin bir kılıçla evlendiğimi düşünüyordum. Her türlü deşecektin beni. Ama bütün bu düşünceler, senden gerçekten hoşlanana kadardı. Ve tabii senin de beni düşündüğün kadar itici bulmamaya başladığın zamana kadar..."
I loved this book. I especially liked the chronology of historical events at the end. however the time gap between this and the second book of the graham series is a little disappointing, otherwise this book was excellent.
A good read. There was more than just history here. It tried to bring the loyalties, beliefs and customs into the mix. Love torn between devotion and loyalty. And the winner is? Love of course.
Good medieval romance with warriors and Vikings. Characters were strong willed, determined and loyal to their beliefs. The author opens up with a great first book of the series, she keep you wanting more.
It's taken me awhile to figure out why the main character in this story is getting on my nerves/rubbing me the wrong way. The book description led me to believe she is strong willed and independence. Excellent characteristics in a heroine who is responsible for leading her people, etc. However this character is immature, petulant and seems bent on self-destruction. What makes independent characters so compelling is that their independence is tempered by wisdom, some degree of restraint and a sen ...more
This was a fascinating story for me. It was a time of extreme unrest, political nightmares, wars, then more wars and so many didn't live to be over 40.

Nevertheless, the characterization of a small group of people trying to survive during these times held me spellbound. It showed she did some major research of the time period...although there were a few red herrings thrown into the mix.

I wanted to stay up all night and finish, but my eyes wouldn't stay open. It had all the elements I look for in
3 puanı da yarısından sonra toparladı diye verdim. Yoksa başı öldürdü beni sıkıntıdan.
Waryk olmasa hiç çekilmezdi herhalde.

When Mellyora's Viking father dies, the Scottish king decrees she should marry Waryk, the king's champion. Desperate to escape, she tries again and again to run from her future husband.

Mellyora is another headstrong and stubborn character who could stand to think things through. Her continuous escapes at the beginning are vaguely amusing, but get old. She and Waryk are a good couple, though, and they are fun to read about.
Eh. I love the history explored in this book but Wyrck comes off like a huge jerk and Mellyora is just a spoiled princess that happens to know how to fight. I didn't find either of them to be appealing characters. Also, in no way does a love story develop between them. The way it was written it seemed like once they had sex they magically fell in love. It was unrealistic and disappointing.
I really enjoy shannon drake as an author, I just have to be in the mood for lots of historical facts which she does a great job with. This I felt focused a lot on the story, I sometimes get frustrated with the weakness of not being able to confess feelings but that is just my personal preference. I recommend her books they are great reads.
I'm giving this up at page sixty, I find it hard to believe that a king would tolerate the disobedience of one of his loyal subjects in the way the author has described. I wouldn't allow my six year old to get away with the same sort of disrespect that the king supposedly puts up with in this story. It just didn't ring true for me.
