Hah. More like Wangst of the Wicked! I kid, I kid.

I made a comment about the first book being Buffy Season One: Disney Channel Version. Well, the sequel jumped straight into Buffy Season Six territory. It's dark, sexy, and witty. Much more so than the first.

Admittedly, I wasn't too impressed with Angelfire, the first book in this series, but Wings of the Wicked is abundantly more fun than it's predecessor.

Last year I read, and very much enjoyed, Angelfire by local (to me) author Courtney Allison Moulton. I have since been awaiting the sequel, Wings of the Wicked, with much anticipation. I was hoping it would live up to the promise of the first book. I'm very pleased to say it has.

Since discovering that she is the Preliator things for Ellie have become very straight forward, and very confusing at the same time. She spends her nights chasing down demonic reapers with her guardian Will, who has been at her side for centuries, despite her many reincarnations. Now their relationship is platonic, which is difficult for both of them, especially since they have expressed their feelings for one another.. But these things must be swept aside - an ancient evil stirs and war is upon them. Will Ellie be able to balance everything and not lose herself... or, worse, her soul?

I found the sequel to Angelfire to be better than the first one... almost. I add a caveat because I had one problem with the ending of the book that skewed my enjoyment a touch. For the first 400+ pages the book was absolutely incredible, dark and intense. The plotting was pitch perfect and the character interactions were funny and compelling and sad... and then one big plot point/reveal happened around, oh, 100 pages away from the end... And that was where I wanted it to end, but it did not. It kept going and going. I feel that the end after that major point could have had about 50 pages trimmed out and the flow would have been much better, but, as it is, I grew weary. It's a little disappointing, but only in a minor way. I think the book would have been an absolute 5 if it were not for this one small detail.

Moulton really seems to enjoy the monster making part of this series... you can tell it in her writing. There's a lot of love there.

Other than that one gripe, wow. This was a great read. There are a lot of things that happen to Ellie and company that make this book stunning; Ellie particularly. She goes through some major life changing events in this book, as does Will. I was glad to see Moulton broaden the scope of her characters by that much. It makes them well rounded interesting individuals to read. Moulton does manage to defeat the dreaded middle-book-sucking scenario...despite my displeasure with the last few chapters. I really did love this book. A lot. The world is wonderful, the mythology is engaging, and the characters will stay in my brain for a while.

Also, I'm completely happy that Moulton added a scene in East Lansing. That made my day. Here's hoping for a smidge more in the next book.

Once I started Wings of the Wicked I honestly could not put it down. I was an emotional roller coaster through out so much of this book. Ellie is facing some of the hardest things ever and she has too much at stake. One wrong move could have disastrous effects. It doesn't help being an archangel she only half remembers and having so many human emotions. Ellie sacrifices so much in this book and not everyone comes out of it alive.

Review : Again Courtney writes another AMAZING book! She keeps you on the edge of your seat throught the WHOLE book and then leaves you hanging at then end wanting more!!! I have to say I fell in love with book one but now I am obsessed and cannot wait to see what comes next and I know it will be even better! I will start with the sexy guardian Will. * swoons * He is one of the best male characters I have read and as I read these books I know I say it alot but every male character gets better and better in my books and Will takes the cake with of course my true love * Dimitri* but that is my opinion but Will is a close second. He does everything for Ellie and always has, and there is sometimes a line you have to draw he does but she keeps pushing it and him. She loves him more than anything and he does her but he will not cross it, he is scared but when he finally does, everything in the book seems to be brighter for them for the most part. The way the author explains his movements when fighting and Ellie is watching god damn I am melting right along with her!!! He is a real character and you feel as if you know him and can picture him fighting for Ellie and his own life.

Now Ellie the most kickass 17 year old character I know and love!! She just gets more and more amazing in the first book again she stole my heart, taking her spot as Preliator in stride ( most of the time). IN this book there is such a change in her and i LOVE it. She steps up even more and also in this book she loses so much it dims her a little and as it eats away at her , it also does to Will too. When she realizes shes in pain and Will feels it she gets even more depressed. I got so upset when she started shutting him out and shutting down, I was crying along with her!!!

That makes a book a book, when you feel so much when your reading, making you devour it to finish and see what happens, and what is going to happen next, and in this series you just do! This author pulls you in and doesn't let you go even in the end and you are a crying blubbering mess you want to know what next, what is going to happen, how is it going down.

Oh… and now what?

As you’ve seen from my Angelfire review, there is something about this story that really grabbed me. Not sure if it is the angel involvement, or the monster killing action set, but I liked the series and I can’t wait for the next book to come out.

Except for the teenage drama (that at some point got to be a bit tiresome), this book was (as well) really entertaining.

Loved it. I love the world that Courtney Allison Moulton created. I was lucky enough to win an ARC of this. I absolutely LOVED the first book so was extremely excited to get book 2. From the very first page I was sucked into the book and I honestly couldnt put it down!! This book had me on the edge of my seat and crying so hard at a certain bit!! Its not even out yet but I need book 3!!

However, I said that the writing was good enough and the story line interesting enough to push me to continue reading in the series. I am so glad that I did because this second book in the series took the story on a whole other level. It was wonderful!

So, what was so great about Wings of the Wicked? However, I said that the writing was good enough and the story line interesting enough to push me to continue reading in the series. I am so glad that I did because this second book in the series took the story on a whole other level. It was wonderful!

So, what was so great about Wings of the Wicked? First of all -- the relationship between Will and Ellie. Forbidden love is nothing new in this genre, so it takes a bit of talent to create a forbidden love story that doesn't seem cliche. Moulton manages to do this in this story. Will and Ellie are constantly fighting against their sense of duty and their feelings for one another. Both of them are caught in a supreme battle between good and evil. Both of them have roles which are essential to "good" winning the fight. But both of them have this overwhelming connection to one another. They are two halves of a whole. They have spent centuries fighting for and protecting one another. Each time that Ellie is reborn she gains a closer connection with her humanity, pulling her further away from her angelic origins. This allows her to experience emotion more fully, and for this reason she finds herself willing to sacrifice in order to make a relationship with Will work. Will, on the other hand, has had to watch her die over and over again when he is unable to protect her fully from the demonic reapers that are intent on ending her existence and creating chaos that will lead to armageddon. He tries valiantly to keep his emotions from ruling his actions because he doesn't want to fail in his duty to protect Ellie, and he is concerned that a relationship with her will harm that duty in some way. This entire dilemma is treated perfectly in the book. It had potential to be something that became too angtsy, if that is even a word. I really get bored by these types of situations when I have to read countless pages of internal dialogue by the main character, usually the heroine, complaining and complaining and complaining about the problems of the forbidden love. But in this story there was just enough anxiety to show the heartwrenching struggles that Will and Ellie were going through without going overboard. The two of them continued to communicate with one another. No one was hiding anything from the other as far as the relationship went. They knew where each of them stood.

I knew when Will finally decided to take the plunge and go all in for this relationship at the halfway point of the book that things were getting ready to get way more complicated for this not-so-young couple. Sometimes when an author throws in a major plot twist to shake things up just when things seemed to be getting better I can get majorly annoyed. But the major crisis that Ellie faces in the middle of this novel played out perfectly. I had a feeling that the big reveal that occurred at this point was what was going on from the beginning of Angelfire, but the tragic way in which Ellie figured things out had a big impact on a good portion of the remainder of the book. Ellie definitely had some issues to work through, but I was able to read about it without getting irritated with any overly dramatic reactions. Everything seemed realistic. I did feel bad for Will during all of this, but it played out just as it needed to, and it made me love Will as a character even more. And I do love the character of Will -- so loyal, so fierce in battle, so willing to do anything to help Ellie to be protected and happy. I really do root for this couple to find a way to make things work in the end. Right now it seems a bit hopeless, especially with the events of the end of this book, but I have faith that it will turn out to everyone's good by the end of the series.

I really enjoyed the dilemma that Ellie had to work through during this entire novel -- the connection between the angelic part of her nature and the human part. The angelic part is all powerful but without emotion. As an angel she has absolutely no free will. Instead, she is a soldier who takes orders and executes those orders. As a human being she has free will and gets to experience emotions. This allows her to love her family, friends, and Will in particular. A thousand years earlier Ellie was a ruthless killing machine who executed vengeance and justice on the demonic reapers of the world. She did her duty without question or any emotion. But with each reappearance in a new life she gains more and more of the human part of her nature, and this leads her to experience greater emotions. The question that she poses to herself again and again during this novel is whether it is more important to be human with free will and the ability to love or to be all powerful so that she can defeat the extremely powerful demons that are intent of destroying all that is good in the world. She does not want to abandon her "normal" life that includes friendship and love, but she begins to feel a growing angelic presence within her that demands her attention. I found the whole dilemma to be fascinating to read, and any time a fictional novel causes me to think deeply about any aspect of my humanity I count that as an excellent work of fiction.

Also, I LOVED Cadan. I mean I really, really loved this character in the book. He is a demonic reaper who appears to be good. He is a source of comfort to Ellie at important moments in the book. He is such a good guy and has a unique connection to Ellie. He loves her and will do whatever it takes to protect her. He does not fit into the perfect mold of good and evil that has been set out by this world. He is an important exception to the rule, and that exception should cause everyone to question whether the rule is valid at all. Ellie is starting to see that things are not quite so black and white as she had believed, but others have not quite gotten on that bandwagon yet. Still, I sure do love Cadan, and I hope that he takes a prominent role in the next book of the series.

Reading this book was quite an exercise in restraint for me. I found myself pushing on to try and read faster and faster and faster so that I could get to the next part of the story. I kept trying to limit myself to only one chapter at a time so that I didn't race through the story too quickly and ruin my experience of the story, but at the end of each chapter I had to just read a few pages more to see what happened next. My emotions were all over the place. I would go from heartwarming tummy tingling feelings after a particular romantic moment between Will and Ellie, to immediately having that heart drop to my feet when Will and Ellie found themselves in terrible danger, and then having that heart find its way back to my chest only to feel it tightly squeezed as someone faces a horrible tragedy or loss. I was a mess. But I loved it.

This book didn't quite reach a five star rating for me, but I still enjoyed it a lot. I can't wait until book three is published. This was one of the better book twos in a series that I have read, and I do highly recommend it.(less)

The plot was just so good, up to the point where it's just indescribable. There were some very dark, emotional scenes in this book that you do not see coming. I don't want to spoil anything but in one word, it was heartbreaking. I didn't realize that by the time I finished one of the chapters, tears were pouring out of my eyes. Worry not though, this book wasn't all doom and gloom. It had some light hearted moments which I really enjoyed.

In Wings, I must admit that the romance was probably one of my favorite parts. After reading Angelfire and seeing the sweet, innocent love between Will and Ellie, I was so shocked that the romance in Wings was anything but that! Not that it wasn't sweet and heartfelt, it was just a lot more steamier and appealed more to my...let's say "bad side" of me. ;)

Jokes aside, the relationship between Ellie and Will is just so adorable. It only strengthens and deepens in this novel, and it never ceases to make me squeal with giddiness when Will just does...anything! He's devoted to the girl he loves and is determined to make her happy whenever he can, he's the perfect guy! (Plus, he's oh so very sexy when he tries.)

Warning though, the ending may kill you. With a cliffhanger ending like this, I was ripping my hairs out! I'm still dying to know what's going to happen next, but I guess I'll have to wait till early 2013. :( That's right, you heard me. EARLY 2013. I think Courtney's trying to indirectly kill her fans here.

Heed my advice: If you haven't read Angelfire, you should because it's just that good (in fact, read my review). If you have read Angelfire and thought it was so-so, read Wings and you will be stunned. If you have read Angelfire and thought it was great, then why the heck have you not picked up a copy of Wings?! Buy a copy immediately!(less)

This book is so far somewhat annoying mostly because of ellie and her constant whining and having to depend on will as well as her making stupid choices: (view spoiler) and not caring about the fact that she's putting her loved ones lives in danger. Another thing I'm having a trouble with is the fact that there's no diversity in this series what so ever except for Lauren being Asian.

With a deadly cliffhanger.

- Great continuation of the story. I thought this book would be just full of action and not much development, but there were a lot of things revealed. Some pretty shocking things.

Let me start by saying this was everything I'd hoped for in a sequel.

Wings of the Wicked built upon key relationships from Angelfire and added new and important characters for us to fall in love with. Courtney provided more detail and backstory with this one, which I thought helped us understand Ellie and Will more--and their relationship, too.

I am so lucky I got to read an ARC of Wings! How incredibly beautiful is the love story, the complicated plot of heaven vs. hell (i.e., the war of endless battles between good and evil), and the archangel Gabriel in all her Glory! Will's courage, devotion and undying love/affection was more than I could ask for. Plus the hot/sexy...LOL!

The kind of fuckery is this?

They say when you are at the bottom, you can only jump higher. It certainly is true in the case of Courtney Allison Moulton. Her story jumped from the it-suck-so-bad-it-needs-be-stuffed-into-a-time-crack-and-erased-from-existence that was the first book to one hell of a crazy ride.

It's hard to imagine that it was just over a year ago that I read book #1 Angelfire in this series , now one year later I was able to read Book #2 Wings of the Wicked. At the end of Angelfire, we learnt that Ellie was in fact the reincarnation of the Archangel Gabriel and that her newfound friend Will was in fact her guardian throughout the centuries and then we also met the reaper - bad angel Cadence. In Book #2 Ellie it seems is attracting all the wrong attention as a number of people want her...more

Shelves: don-t-recommend

This book is everything that is wrong with books. Possibly ever. In the existence of the world. I caught very few usage and spelling errors...so I guess it got that right. Here's what's wrong with the book:

1) The plot. There isn't one. Most books have one of these. This one, for some odd reason, went another way...of meandering endlessly.
2) The main character. Let's see . . . seldom does she actually kick butt, even though, supposedly, she has some sort of super human powers. Waiting on those. S...more This book is everything that is wrong with books. Possibly ever. In the existence of the world. I caught very few usage and spelling errors...so I guess it got that right. Here's what's wrong with the book:

1) The plot. There isn't one. Most books have one of these. This one, for some odd reason, went another way...of meandering endlessly.
2) The main character. Let's see . . . seldom does she actually kick butt, even though, supposedly, she has some sort of super human powers. Waiting on those. She whines. Endlessly. She's stupid. She's not funny. She's short. She's redheaded (I wouldn't count it against her...but this character deserves more knocks). She's pathetic. Unlikable. Snotty. Stuck up. I could pretty much go on forever.
3) The love interest. He's boring. His personality is thus: "I fight bad guys. I love Ellie. I fight bad guys. I love Ellie." It's really not much. I can't even fathom how this nothing personality guy likes her. Not sure which character that reflects worse on.
4) The supporting cast. All bad. Snotty, rude friend. Check. Brainy guy. Check. Funny (but not really) guy. Check. Gorgeous girl to be jealous of. Check. Other love interest who is somewhat interesting but makes no sense because he's only in 5 short scenes in the book and spends the whole time saying he's in love (inexplicably) with main girl who he has spent about 5 minutes with, and she cares about him too. Check. Pointless parents. Check.
5) The bad guys. They apparently hate executing their evil scheme. They like to give Ellie huge breaks and chunks of time to party and do school and makeout with Will. "Nah," they say, "Let's raise Lillith and Sammael tomorrow. Don't you know Ellie has a bowling party tonight? Too. Important."
6) The fight scenes. So abominable that I actually didn't read them. yup. Skipped 'em.
7) The parties. Oh. My. Gosh. Let's see...the world is going to become Hell, and all of the humans will be banished to Hell forever...and 80% of this book is parties, school, and Ellie and Will making out.

Okay. I have to stop. I could go on forever. The book was so bad. Don't even glance at it in passing. I'm pretty sure that more people reading this book is a scarier apocalypse than the whole Hell on Earth situation.(less)

This book blew my mind away and I am still in shock over everything that has happened. I just finished this book and am staring at my book thinking holy hell... Ellie is an avenging angel now. And not just any avenging angel, she happens to be Gabriel in female human form and some just attacked her guardian and the love her life! I say hell yes to Ellie kicking some ass as revenge!!! Now on to the more heavy scenes, like the fact that...more Holy shit!! That is one of the best books I have ever read!! This book blew my mind away and I am still in shock over everything that has happened. I just finished this book and am staring at my book thinking holy hell... Ellie is an avenging angel now. And not just any avenging angel, she happens to be Gabriel in female human form and some just attacked her guardian and the love her life! I say hell yes to Ellie kicking some ass as revenge!!! Now on to the more heavy scenes, like the fact that Will is dying! What the hell! Everything was so perfect... they were gonna do the "deed" then be happy together and finish this damn war, but of course a curve-ball ending had to been thrown in there. I was shocked to learn that Bastian was Will's father and that Cadan was his half brother. What I hope doesn't happen is a love triangle forms between her and the two brothers. I've already Vampire Diaries with the same damn concept so let's keep it along the lines of her trying to save the LOVE OF HER LIFE and getting revenge then her petty doubts and "hidden" feelings for Cadan. I guess he isn't a bad character so much... but I don't like him because of the threat he poses on the balance between Ellie and what is good for her. Being with Will is what she knows deep down in her heart is right so he will suck if that goes to waste, especially if he has a week to live. Besides me ranting on about how they shouldn't have a love triangle, lets get back to the actual couple. I feel so giddy saying that they are a couple, now that they finally admitted that they love each other enough to give it a try and that their love for each other is what really saves them in the end. I believe in what Will said, "don't stop fighting", Ellie said to Will in the end and right then I knew that she was going to do anything in her power to make sure that prophecy didn't come true... even if it meant getting herself killed in the end. I admire the strength that she showed in the book and how even though her emotions got the best of her, its also what defines her as Ellie and not Gabriel. So to top it all off, I wanted to say that this book really deserves the 5 star rating because of the passion, sadness, anger, love, happiness, denial, confrontation, and humor this book provides through every page and every chapter until the very end of the book. I would recommend this book to anyone and trust me when I say that this book gets hot and heavy at times but will blow your mind away and at some parts have you laughing your ass off. So I say, I hope you enjoy the book like I did. (less)

WOW! What a ride? I loved this installment; it was heart pounding, jaw dropping, swoon worthy and heart wrenching. Courtney Allison Moulton had me enthralled! Wings of the Wicked, is a non-stop, action packed, exciting sequel that's racy, dark, and emotionally riveting. Wings of the Wicked picks up a little while after Angelfire ended. Ellie still needs to find a way to stop Bastian from freeing the Enshi and essentially destroying the world. Problem is, how? And at what cause?
