the wonderful ceridwen sent me this book, because she totally gets my love of sharks, and the people they eat along the way.

don't worry, sharks don't eat people much. we are the circus peanuts of the animal kingdom, and only crazy sharks want to eat us.

but this is great - a kid's book about the shark attacks of 1916; the one jaws was based on.and it is a real-and-true story about how when there is a shark t

In 1916 a great white shark started to attack swimmers on the New Jersey shore. This book is based on true events but the characters are made up. It takes place in Elm Hills, New Jersey on the ocean shore and also in the Matawan Creek. Chet Roscow is the protagonist and the other main characters are his friends Dewey, Sid and Monty. The story happens in July and over 12 days there are 4 people killed by shark attacks in waist deep water and in a creek. At the time this happened people didn't bel ...more

The book “I Survived The Shark Attacks Of 1916” by Lauren Tarshis was an interesting book that I enjoyed. Some parts of the book I liked were the way the people were described. She also wrote the book realistically making me feel worried when the characters were in danger. I was sucked into the book because it seemed real.

The main character is Chet Roscow. He is a laid back, friendly kid. His family moves around so much he doesn’t really know what having a real friend feels like. Chet’s family m

I thought the book was very interesting and helpful to learn about “The Shark Attacks of 1916”. It also helped to learn about sharks in general. Overall, I thought it was a good book.

In the plot a lot of interesting things happened to the main character, Chet. Chet’s parents always moved around and eventually Chet’s uncle convinced his mom to let him stay with him. When he was living with his uncle he made some new friends who liked to play pranks on each other. One day Chet was swimming in the

The book “I survived The Shark Attacks Of 1916” was a pretty interesting book. There were parts that got a little boring, but once you’re into the book, it’s great. It’s not a huge book, and it’s also pretty easy to read. I enjoy reading books by Lauren Tarshis because her books are easier for me to read.

During the beginning of the book Chet, the main character, was with his buddies reading the paper. They all saw that there was a killer shark that ate somebody recently. Everybody was scared to

"I survived the shark attacks of 1916" by Lauren Tarshis was a very simple book. This book was a very quick read. It only took me a total of around two days to read the whole thing (quick for me). The book had a very quick and easy story to pick up on and I liked the characters. This book also helps you understand what people were like during the time period. It stated that there were no marine biologists back then so that's why there was little knowledge about sharks and their habits. I would r ...more

The Shark Attacks of 1916 is a chilling book about the shark attack of 1916 which actually happened. It tells the story of Chet, as he stays with his Uncle Jerry while his parents are on a business trip in California. He is trying to fit in to his new town, but there is a shark epidemic about sharks being in creeks. This book is an entertaining yet short read that I would recommend for anyone who is looking for a short thriller.
The book "I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916" is a great fictional book written by Lauren Tarshis. One day after Chet took a swim in the creek he went to his uncles diner. When he was there, there was a man who told a group of people that sharks do not attack people. A couple days after that Chet went to the creek to swim with his friends when all of a sudden he sees it... To find out how Chet survives read this amazing book.
Lauren Tarshis's, "I SURVIVED THE SHARK ATTACKS OF 1916," was a very interesting book. It was very intriguing from the beginning to the end, as well as always keeping the reader itching to finish it. Although short it was full of different lessons and meanings that could be picked up by the reader. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an action packed quick read.

I thought that it was pretty good because I love sharks. Especially when there are attacks. So this book is about a boy. And that boy moves and moves and he actually made friend because he stayed with his uncle. Then his friends play a mean trick on him. So he did one to them and they were so scared. Then u will have to figure out the rest.
This is Jacob's first review:

This book was surprisingly amazing. It is about a boy who thinks that a shark is in the water and his friends don't believe him. They don't believe him because they pulled a prank on him that there was a shark in the water. The boy wanted to get them back; he made a lake monster, and his friends thought someone had been killed. It made his friends really scared. Then his friends were in the water and the boy was screaming "get out of the water!" because there really

"I survived the Shark Attacks of 1916" is about a boy named Chet. He doesn’t really fit in with anyone around him until a couple boys ask him to go swimming in the creek. Chet decides to play a prank on them and pretends there is a monster in the creek. One day Chet sees a real monster, a shark, but his friends don’t believe him. Chet ends up getting his calf muscle bitten trying to save his friend. I like how this book relates back to the actual facts about the shark attacks of 1916. I would re ...more

Chet was a normal boy, traveling from place to place with his mom and dad. Then his family dropped him off with his uncle. He finally settled down, met some friends, and got a job.

One day, he was at the creek, and one of his friends were pulled under the water. A shark?! Sharks couldn't get up this far upstream! He found out it was just his friends pulling a prank.
Lauren Tarshis takes a series of horrifying incidents – a series of shark attacks in New Jersey in the summer of 1916 – and uses them as the basis for a short YA novel. The novel stays pretty close to the facts of the case – the 4 fatalities are taken directly from the historical record. The 5th victim, the only survivor, has been fictionalized to act as the protagonist of the piece.

The Shark Attack of 1916 of the I Survived books was one of the best for this point that I will find the other books and figure out what their connected too.For this reason, that I would like this book more better than the other books of the I Survived because the reason is that it has comedy, action, nonfiction, and it’s historical. Therefore without a doubt,I conclude that I will finish all of the I Survived books that is my dream reading. But this book grabbed me that I want to read until the end ...more
In 1916 there were stories on newspapers about sharks attacking people. One of those stories that interested me the most was a boy named Chet Roscow who traveled a lot with his parents. One day his parents decided to leave him with his uncle in New Jersey, there he met friends who decided to go to the creek as was enjoying a day in the water he felt something on his foot and then felt a hard punch on his chest, it turns out it was blood coming from his chest. This is a great book. It is action packed with the shark attacks and it gives great imagery. It's a good short book to read!

This book was not the worst book I have ever read, but in my opinion it's kind of lame. The ending was very predictable, it wasn't hard to read at all. I mean I did just grab it and start reading it in english on day when i forgot my own book, but still i would recommend it to a kid ages 8-10.

I didn't think the book was great because it was so short. There wasn't enough content to really have a good story. One thing I did like about it though was how it was based on a true story. I found the book hard to relate to because it took place a hundred years ago.
This is my first time to read this book. I gave this book 3 stars because I think it is a little bit boring. But at the last chapters its interesting. The best chapter I liked was when they do pranks on Ched. I like how the book is not that big. I like how the book is written. the best part when Cheds uncle lies to him about a shark attack.

In 1916 there were some shark attacks off the shores of New Jersey, as well as in a river that fed to the ocean. In this retelling, 10-year-old Chet comes frighteningly close to becoming one of the victims. Chet is staying with his Uncle while his parents go to California to look for work. Chet quickly makes friends, and while he misses his parents terribly, his uncle takes good care of him and he enjoys spending time with his new friends--until a prank goes too far. Will the friendship be saved ...more
Very good book for kids. As an adult it was quick reading. I was surprised to find out it was true, though dramatized. It was very informative with a little bit of why you don't "cry wolf" thrown in. The author did a good job of bringing the characters to life and making the main character sympathetic.

My ten-year-old liked this enough to beg me to read it, too.

“They’d been eaten! Chet was the only one left! He was about to run up to Main Street for help, but then Dewey came up sputtering. “You idiot,” Dewey said, looking around. “You kept me under too long! That wasn’t the plan!” Who was Dewey talking to? And what did he mean about a plan? Sid came up out of the water, gasping for breath. Where was the shark? And why was Sid laughing? “We got you!” Sid shouted at Chet. He held something up. A chipped gray tile. The fin. Chet’s head started to spin. He felt like he might throw up. They’d tricked him! Monty was standing on the bank on the other side of the creek. “I can’t believe you fell for that!” he laughed. Chet couldn’t talk. His heart seemed to be” 0 likes
