the wonderful ceridwen sent me this book, because she totally gets my love of sharks, and the people they eat along the way.

don't worry, sharks don't eat people much. we are the circus peanuts of the animal kingdom, and only crazy sharks want to eat us.

but this is great - a kid's book about the shark attacks of 1916; the one jaws was based on.and it is a real-and-true story abou

Wow! Seriously?! I had no idea of (so many facts presented in this book) the threat of shark attack in brackish water. This is going to greatly diminish my comfort factor while boating on the North River for the rest of this summer and probably forever, in the same way that JAWS has impacted my enjoyment of the beach since the seventies. Of course, I can let none of this on in front of my children so as not to have the "scarred for life" thing passed down to another generation. I guess I should ...more

personal response: I personally had no feelings concerning this short chapter book. I say this because of its flat plot and characters.

plot: The year is 1916, a boy named Chet arrives in a town close to the ocean on the east coast. He is sent to live with his uncle because of his father’s work habits. At first Chet is worried that nobody will make friends with him. Later on, Chet learns that he is very popular with the other kids in town. Before Chet realizes how much he means to everyone, he di

I really liked this book and I just wanted to keep reading this book. I think this book taught me that certain things can happen at the best of times and the worst of times.

At the beginning of this book there’s this kid whose parents leave him at his uncle’s house while they are on a business trip. He makes friends and they decide to pull a prank on him. Chet gets mad at them and in the paper there are shark attacks but nobody believes that though. Chet decides to pull a prank on his friends, an

In 1916 a great white shark started to attack swimmers on the New Jersey shore. This book is based on true events but the characters are made up. It takes place in Elm Hills, New Jersey on the ocean shore and also in the Matawan Creek. Chet Roscow is the protagonist and the other main characters are his friends Dewey, Sid and Monty. The story happens in July and over 12 days there are 4 people killed by shark attacks in waist deep water and in a creek. At the time this happened people didn't bel ...more

Not exactly a Newbery winner, but a good story that will appeal to reluctant readers. Very short- I read it in an hour. I did like the mixture of historical fact with fiction, and I learned something while reading it- before 1916 people thought that sharks were passive and afraid of people.

I liked I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916 because there was so much about shark attacks in the early 1900s. I also liked the book because I like reading about sharks and how they are such powerful animals that are very dangers. This shows that anything can happen in a small area so keep and eye out for suspicious things.

The story takes place in the summer of 1916 in the town of Elm Hills, Florida where there were a lot of shark attacks every year. Chet's dad was always g

The book “I Survived The Shark Attacks Of 1916” by Lauren Tarshis was an interesting book that I enjoyed. Some parts of the book I liked were the way the people were described. She also wrote the book realistically making me feel worried when the characters were in danger. I was sucked into the book because it seemed real.

The main character is Chet Roscow. He is a laid back, friendly kid. His family moves around so much he doesn’t really know what having a real friend feels like. Chet’s family m

Personal Response (In your own words)

I liked this book, because it was very interesting, from talking about the shark attacks, to people not believing about the attacks. Some people did not believe the captain's stories. When he was a captain he almost got ate by a Great White shark. I did not hate anything in this book.

Plot (Events that take place)

There were shark attacks at the Jersey Shore, just south of Elm Hills. Everybody was talking about the attacks in New Jersey, at elm hills. Chet’s

The book “I survived The Shark Attacks Of 1916” was a pretty interesting book. There were parts that got a little boring, but once you’re into the book, it’s great. It’s not a huge book, and it’s also pretty easy to read. I enjoy reading books by Lauren Tarshis because her books are easier for me to read.

During the beginning of the book Chet, the main character, was with his buddies reading the paper. They all saw that there was a killer shark that ate somebody recently. Everybody was scared to

The book I Survived the Shark Attack of 1916 was about a ten year old boy named Chet. A Great White Shark has been killing people all around the New Jersey beaches by Chet's home. Chet and his friends goof off and fool each other by swimming under the water holding a gray tile. Is that a mistake? Once they get fooled so many times by each other, they won't even know when it's a real shark. Find out if Chet and his friends are safe swimming in the water by reading.

This book was surprisingly amazing. It is about a boy who thinks that a shark is in the water and his friends don't believe him. They don't believe him because they pulled a prank on him that there was a shark in the water. The boy wanted to get them back; he made a lake monster, and his friends thought someone had been killed. It made his friends really scared. 3.5 stars This series is super popular with the kids that come to the library where I work, so I thought I would see what the hype was all about. What better one to try than the one about shark attacks! I can see why the reluctant reader likes them, it was fast paced and had a lot of action. I like the fact that this series makes historical fiction exciting for kids, which isn't usually most kids first choice of genre. But other than that, the characters were all one dimensional and I didn't fin ...more

"I survived the Shark Attacks of 1916" is about a boy named Chet. He doesn’t really fit in with anyone around him until a couple boys ask him to go swimming in the creek. Chet decides to play a prank on them and pretends there is a monster in the creek. One day Chet sees a real monster, a shark, but his friends don’t believe him. "I survived the shark attacks of 1916" by Lauren Tarshis was a very simple book. This book was a very quick read. It only took me a total of around two days to read the whole thing (quick for me). The book had a very quick and easy story to pick up on and I liked the characters. This book also helps you understand what people were like during the time period. It stated that there were no marine biologists back then so that's why there was little knowledge about sharks and their habits. I would r ...more

Read one title in a wildly popular series for children, particularly boys, in our system. Had a nice backstory of a new kids in town living with his uncle and trying to make friends - and the wildly impossible scenario of a shark in the local stream. Only, it is based on a true incident. Tarshis also informs us that at the time people didn't believe that sharks would attack people, it would be a bit like hearing about rabbits attacking people. (But really, look at those teeth!!) Nice story with ...more

The book "I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916" is a great fictional book written by Lauren Tarshis. One day after Chet took a swim in the creek he went to his uncles diner. When he was there, there was a man who told a group of people that sharks do not attack people. A couple days after that Chet went to the creek to swim with his friends when all of a sudden he sees it... To find out how Chet survives read this amazing book.

The Shark Attacks of 1916 is a chilling book about the shark attack of 1916 which actually happened. It tells the story of Chet, as he stays with his Uncle Jerry while his parents are on a business trip in California. He is trying to fit in to his new town, but there is a shark epidemic about sharks being in creeks. This book is an entertaining yet short read that I would recommend for anyone who is looking for a short thriller.
