This three-volume set is an exemplary history, full of the incident and hundreds (thousands) of persons (all carefully indexed) who comprise the events of two and half centuries. Sir Steven is not a "thesis" historian, although he does not hesitate to make final conclusions of great insight and soundness. Narrative history of crusades to the Holy Land and the Crusader Kingdoms (well largely the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. It's easy to read, approachable and at first highly detailed. However the author is noticeably tired of the subject and lacking in empathy by the third volume, doesn't really engage critically with the source material and, to put it crudely, misses out a lot of the good stuff.

Runcimans Erzählung ist sehr flüssig zu lesen und über die ganzen 1200 Seiten hinweg durchwegs unterhaltsam. Auch wenn ich im Allgemeinen Übersetzungen gegenüber eher kritisch bin, hatte ich hier absolut nichts auszusetzen.
