This was a fairly good read, though not quite as good as the previous book in the series, Sex and the Single Vampire . (This is the third book in the series and A Girl's Guide to Vampires the first.)

Thank Goddess we no longer see Joy and Roxy, main characters from the first book who reminded me of a couple of whiny teenagers, in this one. We do have Ally and Christian and a few other characters from the second book though and I was glad to see them return in this one.

In this installment, Nell H...more

Nell is just a reincarnation of Allie from the previous book. She has a simialr handicap but mummies to replace the ghosts.

There are a few genuinely funny moments; Adrian defending his grim reputation and getting shot down, the mummies, Damien. Often though it tries too hard, I found the 'Oh look at the cute American' theme highly irratating.
For a supposed professor of medieval history, Nell shows no signs of being capable of even basic intellect, she's all mouth off and talk her way into troub...more

Don't get me wrong, I loved this book, but it's a trashy little novel, I wanted to nominate it for worst sex scene and worst opening line (even if the opening line is actually a excerpt from the middle of the book). The actual opening scene is quite funny, because being the 3rd book in the series I was actually expecting the imp to appear (as it did).

This is on more book in the Dark One series, it has more action, more danger and a bit less romance.
This narrator (Nell) is more like Allie than Jo...more

When Nell is hired to translate the writing on an antique breastplate she has no idea what she is getting herself into. It isn't her skills at translation that Melissande is interested in - her assistance is needed to help locate Melissande's nephew and rescue him from a demon lord and a Dark One known as The Betrayer.

Although Nell is reluctant to take on the task she is unable to leave the boy to his fate. As she begins her investigation she discovers that all is not as it would seem. Her init...more

synopsis: As far as she can tell, Nell Harris is either going insane or she is in love. Nell thought she had been summoned to Prague to work on an inscription in a rare fourteenth-century breastplate. Instead, she is immersed in the world of the Moravian Dark Ones (think vampires) when she is swept up in the search for a boy held captive by the demon lord Asmodeus. Although Nell would like nothing better than to use her powers as a "Charmer" to help find the missing boy, the last time she dabble...more

This is my favorite Dark One book of the series. I actually read it before when I was only 13 years old and i still remembered it until today.

Nell has a troublesome past which she tries her best not to remember no matter the damage it had on her appearance and the fear that was hidden inside her. Little did she know she would be sucked into a battle, where she would be forced to use her forgotten Charmer abilities.

Adrian spent his whole life with a target over his head being known as the Betr...more

Erster Satz: "Kobolde?"

My ratings system is as follows. One star is GOOD. The book is entertaining, easy to read and you don't want to stop reading because something about the book is compelling you not to. Two stars is GREAT! This time the story is not only entertaining, but highly creative, unique, easy to read and hard to put down. Three stars is EXCELLENT. Here the book has all aspects of one and two stars, but now the book is thought and emotionally provoking. Four is AWESOME. This is the read that is not only cr...more

Book 3 of the Dark One series. Once again Katie MacAlister had me laughing out loud every chapter of this book. This one is about Adrian, known as The Betrayer/servant of a Demon Lord and Nell, a retired charmer.
If you're following the series there is not much to explain since the main story is about the whole tormented soulless male need to find his Beloved to save his soul. Only this time Adrian, The Betrayer really has no soul since he's been bound to a Demon and instead of looking for his B...more

"Hoo! You're like a giant mood ring! I wonder if I can make different colors show up depending where I touch you."

So far this one has got to be my fav. Adrian? *DROOL* the bad boy with a lost soul...who isn't really a bad boy at all but a Dark One who has been cursed and has no choice in what he does. 'The Betrayer' is feared by all....until he meets Nell. The one person who is not scared of him in the least bit and is the first person to truly care about him and his lost soul.

This isn't really a proper book reiview, as I never finished the book. I got to about half way, and something else came along to read that was better, so I switched to that instead.
Sex, Lies and Vampires was nowhere near as good as the second book in the series, and to be honest I was getting bored of the tone of the books. Sure the writer was trying to be funny, trying to show how ridiculus and crazy the whole supernatural world was, but because the books never took themselves seriously, I nev...more

This was so far in my opinion the best book in the series. Nell is more believable (if being a Charmer in denial can be considered believable). The plot of the story is much better constructed and coherent without making characters do completely stupid outrageous things for no reason. I like the way the story plays with the concept of good and evil, with surprises for the reader and questioning asumptions of the characters. The mommies are a nice touch. Again Nell also has a damaged leg so anoth...more

Uhg. This one flat out got on my nerves. The plot outline was basically a repetition of the last book. Only this one had obnoxious cutesy wootsey name annoyingly sprinkled through it.

The heroine was also essentially the same character as the last book's heroine. Plucky, refusing to respect the awesome powerfulness of her Dark One, cheeky, supposedly smart, slightly disabled, blah blah blah. --I just didn't buy the transition from slightly broken lady with issues from the past, succeeding through...more

Of the books I read in this series so far I both love and hate this book the most. I totally adore Nell and Adrian, their romance and the action. Nell isn't as snarky as the female leads in the first two books, but this makes her all the more loveable. And Adrian! Talk about one big bad sexy vampire! On the other hand this book also manages to make my blood boil by having adults act thoughtless, selfish and cruel in my opinion, which leads to a child being the one to pay for their faults. This is my first Katie MacAlister book and I must say I was disappointed with it, obviously I have a different sense of humour to others as I did not find it funny.

I found the characters flat, lacking in depth and vapid. They have very little going on in their lives, or at least they certainly do not mention anything approaching real here, nor do they develop personalities during the book. The plot was nearly non-existent and the vampires were unimpressive and so different from vampires in other...more

I am definitely starting to enjoy these books more as the series progresses. For one thing, the two idiots from the first book weren't in this one at all. That helps a lot. Christian and Allie are back, and I thought it was a really interesting twist to see them as the "enemies" for a good portion of the book. I'm a bit confused on Sebastian, though. After Christian's book, I had the impression he was a good guy. I hope he gets better in the next ones. Adrian and Nell are a fun combo. I like tha...more

I was roaming the aisles at the Dollar store (yes, the $ store) and stopped to look at the book selection. What a catchy title and book cover, I thought to myself. I spent my dollar and took the book home, where it remained under my desk for a few months. Finally, I picked it up and could not put it down. This is the third book in the series and i'm very happy I started with this one. I"m slowly trying to get through the whole series. The only downside to the series, is that they follow the same...more

Captivating...Who should I trust?

Thank God, finally a good read in this series! Although repetitive story lines: Dark brooding evil vampire falls for witchy beloved with a big nasty bad guy waiting in the shadows to destroy them... yada, yada. This one in the Dark Ones series from Macalister is better written with a more interesting chase. Unfortunately this is not a stand alone novel. With all the inventive vocab, and captivating suggestive characters (who should I trust senarios), one can easi...more

If you like mysterious vampires known as the Dark Ones, sassy heroines, castles filled with treasure unlike any you can ever imagine, mummies, imps ,humour, immortals and magic, then SEX, LIES, AND VAMPIRES is definitely the book for you.

I was hooked from the first page...imps! It was intriguing to say the least, so I sat down to read it.

Nell Harris is the type of woman who delights in the old-namely, in ancient artefacts. A junior professor of medieval history in Seattle,...more

This is Book Three of "The Dark Ones" series, and another winner for Katie MacAlister. Every novel so far in this series has featured a different vampire and his Beloved. What binds this series together is the fact that all these European vampires know each other and are related in some way: cousins, brothers, friends, etc. Their Beloveds happen to be American women, who travel to Europe on business or vacation, and end up meeting the man of their dreams (grin). Of course, they don't believe in...more

Amazing the story was very interesting. The story between Nell and Adrian is so sweet and adorable. Along with many secrets and hidden anger Nell will try to get under Adrian's skin. Lol. Can Nell be strong enough to help and destroy Adrian's long lost brother? Can she except Adrian's 10-year-old son into her life as well? Can their love survive even tough he is the Betrayer for as long as he can remember? What can happen between them and can their love be forever?

I read the first two in the series several years ago and recall liking them. This one was just ok. Maybe because I had a headache when I started and it was hard to concentrate. Maybe it was because I was interrupted every time I tried to read. Maybe it was because the heroine's name was Nell, and it reminded me of that Jodie Foster movie. Maybe because the hero was a spineless jellybacked wimp. Just didn't do it for me.

The last 50 or so pages were fun, but overall, just ok.

Katie MacAlister tells a great story. Snappy dialog full of quips and fun characters compliment an interesting plot and well-paced flow.

Nell, a history professor, arrives in Europe, supposedly to research an antique breastplate, but soon finds herself agreeing to help a vampire locate and rescue her nephew, who has been abducted by a demon. Add to the fact that one of the vampire's brothers is The Betrayer, bound to a demon and forced to do ghastly things in his name, and that Adrian (the Betray...more

For as long as she can remember, Katie MacAlister has loved reading. Growing up in a family where a weekly visit to the library was a given, Katie spent much of her time with her nose buried in a book. Despite her love for novels, she didn't think of writing them until she was contracted to write a non-fiction book about software. Since her editor refused to allow her to include either witty dialo...more
