I'm in two minds about this book. At the heart of it is a warm & enjoyable love story. But surrounding the story itself were a lot of circumstances that I struggled with.

The final book of the trilogy and the final brother and sister. I know I've mentioned before but it still bothers me. This book also shares the theme of the first book, high school sweethearts.

Here's how I saw this one. Austin is a stubborn man, he knows what he wants and he isn't afraid to do the hard work to achieve it. I was excited that it was part of a trilogy and decided I would run out and get the other two as soon as I could. Not far into this novel, however, I changed my mind and began to believe that Linda Lael Miller had been kidnapped by aliens and replaced by an evil robot because this book was just plain awful.

Paige Remington’s sisters are engaged to Austin McKettrick’s brothers, the subject of the other two novels in the McKettricks of Texas trilogy. Paige is staying at the Silver Spur, where everyone conveniently and cozily lives, and everything is fine until bad-boy brother Austin comes slinking home with a bullriding-career-ending herniated disc. Paige and Austin had been lovers when they were teenagers, but Austin wasn’t ready for the life she wanted, so he made sure Paige caught him making out with another girl, and Paige has never forgiven him. The attraction is still there between them, though, so it isn’t long before the two of them start thinking about picking up where they left off, and there is soon talk of a triple McKettrick-Remington wedding.

This story should have been a good one, but it missed the opportunity at every turn. Much ink was wasted describing every little move everyone made, but very little was devoted to developing the plot or characters. I could not have cared less how they got into the garage and started the car, but I would have liked more of a story. The plot was incredibly weak, and the mystery aspect was such a minute part of the story, I wonder why the author even bothered with it.

Dr. Seuss writes better sexual chemistry between his characters. The way this couple wound up in bed was just plain clumsy, and what happened there made me roll my eyes. Actually, descriptions of everything were bad, from Austin’s injuries to how Paige sat her horse, leaving me to wonder if the author knows anything about back injuries or horses. (I know—this is her umpteenth western, so I was really disappointed.) There seemed to be more concern with getting all three couples and their attendant dogs and children into every scene than with developing the characters this story was supposed to be about. As a result, they came off flat, and not only did I not care what happened to any of them, I could see no reason why they would care about each other.

If this was the first book by this author I had read, I would never, ever read another. It was clunky, tedious, ponderous, and I could not set it aside fast enough. As it is, though I have read several really good romances by Miller, after this, I will hesitate to read another. This is the kind of bad book that makes a reader think an otherwise enjoyable author got herself a ghost writer.

Weren’t there any other SO for these people? Seriously brothers all had to hook up w/ sisters? I simply ADORE romances but this is pushing the pink sparklies, rose-colored glasses and dancing ponies to the extreme here. Then the fact that the h, Paige, and the H, Austin, have a history where he broke her heart and he giggled about her reaction. WOW!! They had been dating before and she had their life all mapped out. Only problem Austin didn’t think things would/could work out that way so instead he construes this brilliant idea. He will be w/ a “friend” and let word get out that they were together and he was cheating on Paige thereby forcing a breakup and destruction of her plans for the future. Only thing is this “friend” is not someone that Paige gets along w/ and one of the “friend’s” friends lets Paige know that good ole Austin is out w/ her messing around and of course Paige catches them in the act! Brilliant idea huh? Why did he actually have to go through w/ it? If the “friend” was really just a friend wouldn’t it have been enough to just pretend and let Paige’s imagination fill in the rest then at least he could claim innocence. Nope he didn’t mean to hurt her that bad though and when he approaches to apologize well she runs after him w/ a water hose.

Now that Nurse Paige is helping him or babysitting him as he heals he decides he wants a little bit more, but for some reason I just couldn’t get behind these two. Austin was incredibly selfish in his youth and he seems to blame himself for lots of things, but he is still a little angry at Paige too. He wants her to just jump back in with him. Yes, it’s been years but for some reason I felt like this story was more fluff than anything and I found myself struggling through it.

I just finished the trilogy, and they were decent. I have to say the little stuff drove me nuts, though, in all three books. Overall, the stories were good, but sometimes the details are what make a good book a GREAT book. There were lots of little things in the books that didn't make sense, or weren't researched enough. Paige wants to avoid Austin as much as possible, but since they’re going to be family now, that’s a little difficult to do. Then his older brothers ask her be the man’s nurse after his bull-riding incident. Austin doesn’t know when to or like to ask for help, so she’s not keen on being his babysitter. But then again, maybe it will be worth it to rub the man the wrong way as much as she can, the way he’s done her for years now. Thus, the balance of being off balance in each other’s company equals out. Until they tumble into bed again.

His brothers are constantly trying to shield him in every aspect of his life just because he’s the baby of the family. But Austin’s had enough. Of course, he’s just like them, so he runs headlong into danger and ends up injured again when the cattle rustling part of the story escalates even more. It’s his relationship with Paige he’s determined to keep them out of any which way he can. And what a relationship it is. Their love scenes are the hottest of the trilogy for me. Enjoyed every one of them.

Learning he can give up the rodeo and make a life on the Silver Spur, Austin opens himself to his love for Paige, telling her his reasons for his behavior ten years in their past and hoping for true forgiveness to have a life with the woman he never stopped loving. Paige, however, is now able to leave at any time after receiving an unexpected financial boon. Maybe leaving is the easy way out, though. Does she have what it takes to stay to face the feelings she never lost for Austin.

I wasn't as thrilled with these books as I was with the other. I was looking forward to this book because Austin was the adventurous one of the brothers (if such a distinction can be made). Miller likes to focus on the family line of the McKettricks and this is the 3rd in a series about a Texan branch. Its not necessary to read the others first, but I would recommend it just for the history it contains.

Austin McKettrick is back home after a bull puts him out of the rodeo for good. Not only is he recuperating from that but soon he has a gunshot to contend with as well. Paige Remington decides to nurse him back to health despite their spark filled history but it ends up like throwing fire and gasoline together. But they can't deny they are attracted, and is that enough to overcome the hurt from the past?

To me, Paige and Austin aren't really that likeable. All they do is snipe at each other during the book and this gets tiring after awhile. Yeah, I get it, they have a past and have trouble getting along, let's move along to the next plot point. The other characters really don't have a big role so we're left with these two as they play the love/hate game.

For a plot there were quite a few things going on in this edition, just like the others, but some of them were quite dull. And after awhile people getting hurt began to get old. It seemed like every few pages there was a new injury happening. I almost feel like Miller didn't have a lot of ideas for this book and just kept rehashing things in new ways. This is a romance so there is descriptive sex in the book. There is also minor cussing. Anyone who doesn't like these things, shouldn't read the book. That being said, Miller's writing style is nice and flowing so the story does move at a good pace.

I'll keep reading Miller's books as I do like the premise behind all of them. After all, what's not to like about cowboys and love stories?

Austin McKettrick probably rode his last bull that October night. A year ago the bull “Buzzsaw” tore him up so bad it took a team of surgeons and lot of rehab to get him going again. This year at the event in San Antonio he got back up on the two thousand pound bull “Buzzsaw” and stayed on it. I've just got done reading this final book in the McKettricks of Texas series and I LOVED it! Austin is your typical rodeo cowboy....thinks he's 10 feet tall and bulletproof....well it's not very far into the book before that attitude gets cut down to size. This was pretty good even considering the unlikely pretense of two sisters marrying two brothers , this goes one more step and throws in the last couple that had vowed to be enemies forever. This book was way more action-packed than the other 2 in this series and I loved that about it. Each of the books in the series have gotten better and better and this was by far, the best one. I was very reluctant to read this book, since I really could not get into the second in the McKettricks series - Garrett. I kept putting it off and finally thought I'd give it a shot. Boy, am I glad I did! I could not put this book down! I just loved the chemistry between Paige and Austin. I loved how they knew how to press each other's buttons. It was such a great, fun read! This book was Linda Lael Miller at her best!

Austin broke up with Paige in an extremely cruel way back when they were 18, but he has never really gotten over her who likewise hasn't gotten over him. She is hanging around the McKettrick ranch, helping out with child care for her sister's son while her house is being remodeled. Austins' brothers ask Paige, a RN, to be his private nurse, which also stretched the imagination but there were moments he needed care and assistance. So they are thrown together and must sort out their conflicted feelings and growing attraction for each other.

The rustler sub-plot continues in this book, as well as concern that vandals are intent on starting oil well fires on the ranch. As in Garret's story, this was an interesting aspect of the story and it comes to a dramatic conclusion at the end of Austin's book. A lot happens in the book with frequent moments of danger and crisis.

Eventually Austin and Paige make their peace over the past. Austin did seem to regret the way he treated her 10 years earlier and his behavior though terrible, could be the kind of thing an immature 18 year old boy would do. In addition to his guilt over his behavior towards Paige, Austin also needed to come to terms with what he felt was his role in events that lead to his parents' deaths shortly after his break-up. In fact, his parents died in an accident that coudn't possibly been forseen and certainly wasn't his fault, but his continued grief and remorse were very human. He definitely was not the idiot child he had been ten years earlier, so Paige's forgiveness (which understandably came slowly) was believable.

Paige was definitely the sister of Julie (second book's heroine) with the same soppiness and constant tearing up, burning eyes, and outright crying over sad thoughts, happy thoughts, everything is changing thoughts, etc. Not that she didn't have cause for some of the weepiness and I'm a big believer in crying getting rid of stress hormones, but with both women it happened so often that I couldn't help but think a mild anti-depressant might be in order. I was also slightly distracted by how quickly Austin moved past some very significant injuries and was back to normal, even if McKettricks were known for their healing abilities.

Otherwise, this was very enjoyable book, one I was always eager to return to reading and my favorite in the McKettricks of Texas series. (less)

Somehow this book just didn't flow well. I guess it was having so many different characters interacting with each other and not much of it making a lot of sense. I picked it up because of the ad which said an injured man gets stuck with a nurse he doesn't want, which sounded like a great idea for a book, but this was very disappointing. This is why you shouldn't quit reading an author just because you didn't like one of their books. I really disliked the previous book, but because this one came in the mail, I started reading it. The writing was so markedly improved, I was surprised it was the same author. She added humor, improved characterization, pacing was really good, a climax I didn't see, although I could see who dunnit from miles away. This one was by far my favorite of the McKettricks of Texas trilogy. The story had a lot more meat and intensity to it than the others. Which made it much more interesting to read.

Due to back problems, Austin McKettrick's career in the rodeo is over. So he returns home to heal...and is more than a little annoyed to find out his brothers have hired nurse Paige Remington to be his "babysitter" to make sure he takes it easy. He and Paige have a messy past full of broken hearts. But neither has forgotten the other.

As Paige spends more and more time with Austin, her feelings for him can't help but return. And with her two sisters fluttering around preparing for their weddings to Austin's two brothers...well, it's got a girl thinking crazy thoughts. But first, she'll have to convince Austin he's ready for family life...unlike when he broke her heart all those years ago.

Review:
I liked the first two books of this trilogy, but they were just missing something to keep me from really liking them. I thought this book had that missing element. There was a lot more intensity and bite to this story. Made it more readable and interesting.

Some of that may be because of the build up to Paige and Austin's story. Miller has been setting it up since the first book in the trilogy so there's a lot of anticipation waiting to see what would happen between these two. But even so, something about these two was just more intense than the other two couples. The chemistry was stronger, the antagonism, the push/pull between them. It made me want to read more whereas the other two books were a little softer.

Plus, there was a stronger storyline in this book as well. The other two books came across too mundane for me. Just not enough going on. But in this one, the trilogy-wide plot over rustling at the ranch and someone having it out for the McKettricks comes to a head and it led to some really tense moments. The whole aspect of the book kept things moving and added some snap to the story. Unlike the other two books, I didn't feel like I was reading a bunch of every day events.

Those two aspects of the book made it so much better than the others. But it wasn't perfect. I did wish that Paige and Austin had spent a little more time talking about the mistakes of the past and putting them behind them. And also, I had a little issue with trilogy continuity in one area. In the last book, Tate was talking about walking away from the ranch if his brothers didn't help out more and it was a big thing and I'm not sure it even got mentioned once in this book. That seemed off to me. So that could have been done better.

On the whole, though, I liked this one. It's a solid contemporary romance. And the trilogy is good as well. Probably not a favorite of mine, but it was worth reading.(less)

I can't even believe anyone liked this book. The entire series just kept getting worse and worse.

Austin was a jerk and Paige didn't stand up for herself once. She allowed herself to be put in situations where any normal woman would say "Hell No!" And why would anyone be attracted to Austin? Did he once apologize -- even once? Ugh!

Hated the book. 3 sisters marrying 3 brothers on NYE. OMG! Do not waste your time.

But what makes these successes all the more enjoyable is that Linda has come home, home to Spokane, Washington, home to writing the stories of her heart, stories set in the Western culture of her childhood, and home to living where she can pull on her boots and ride her beloved horses. Inside, there's the clatter of little paws, her dogs, Sadie and Bernice, and the elegant treading of two cats that Linda claims rule the roost.

The daughter of a town marshal, Linda grew up in Northport, WA, a community of 500 on the Columbia River, 120 miles north of her birthplace, Spokane. Her childhood remembrances include riding horses and playing cowgirl on her grandparents' nearby farm. So rustic was her grandparents' spread that in the early days it lacked the conveniences of electricity and running water.

Devoted to helping others pursue their dreams, Miller is excited about another endeavor. Each year she sponsors a round of competition for her Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women. The stipends, which she funds from her writing and speaking earnings, enable women 25 years and older to improve their lot in life through education. Unlike traditional scholarships, Linda's may be used for childcare, transportation, or any other expense that stands between a woman's dreams and their fulfillment.

It's no wonder the protagonists in Miller's novels are women her readers admire for their honor, courage, trustworthiness, valor and determination to succeed, despite overwhelming odds.
