The usual suspect is a Nasty piece of sheriff, who used to be a bootlegger to boot before he came to the town.
Once you check into The Rusmore Inn Hotel you would notice the proprietor Eleanor Roosevelt has an obsession with American presidents.

Okay, let me be up-front about this ...no bullshitting ... Endurance is some sick and twisted shit. Some of the sickest and twisted-est shit I've read in a very long time. BUT ... and this is an important "but" folks ... Endurance is also solidly written, sublimely creepy in parts, with characters you can root for and other characters you can hate. And that's what saves this novel from the unsavory pit of mere torture porn.

Konrath is a talented storyteller who will enthrall you with exciting stories for the evening. I don't scare easily but I do have to admit that I couldn't finish listening to this on audiobook. Christopher Lane did too good of a job with his narration that I was scared and started to look under my bed whenever I took my ipod with me for a nap. So I grabbed the ebook and went from there. This is my first book by Kilborn but it will not be my last. The heroes and heroines were interesting and I truly was rooting for them all, but especially Maria and Deb --- for some reason they resonated with me the most --- but I do think Kilborn managed some true character development in a rapidly paced book with a slew of characters. I am still in awe over the, um, animal characters, and while more than a little fantastical, it's a horror novel! Plus, the idea of cougar and a dog having so much personality is pretty brilliant. Aside from Maria and Deb, I enjoyed their menfolk and I definitely enjoyed that Kilborn hinted more at the sexual violence than he portrayed it. It would have been an easy out to write pages of "gorn" but I think he struck just the right balance. My one complaint is about Cam; (view spoiler).

I am looking forward to catching up with Kilborn's other novels and then hitting Haunted House, which seems to be the ultimate crossover.(less)

ALERT: PLOT SPOILER. I was drawn into Endurance for two reasons 1) the book was available through the online consortium at our library for check out (it's AMAZING how many e-books one can access via the library, but are constantly unavailable because they are checked out) and 2) I'm a fan of a good horror story. This was a tough one. On the one hand, it was a clever twist on the typical "cannibal hillbilly" tale that's been done to death in recent years. Instead of being just a bunch of inbred/mutated creeps in the forest who hunger for human flesh, they were a bunch of inbred/mutated creeps in the forest who hungered for something much more important. I don't want to give away what, exactly, but it was fairly clever, and made me keep going well into the book.

Unfortunately, the rest of the book left me a bit cold. There were numerous typos and grammar problems, which constantly jarred. More importantly, the story itself was one of those "horror" stories that seems to put its characters through a meat grinder for no other reason than to see them bleed.

There's a thin line between examining evil and celebrating it; between looking at the depths of human suffering in order to show the heights of human triumph... and just introducing new ways to torture people, without providing a compelling reason why, other than "because it'll be fun." I admit this is a totally personal thing on my part, but in this case the story seemed to lean toward the latter, and had (to me at least) a decidedly mean-spirited tone. I know that sounds strange - it was a horror novel, after all. But contrast this to, say, The Shining or The Talisman, stories that put their characters through the wringer, but also lead them into the light of redemption. Call me old-fashioned (I'll take it as a compliment), but I like a bit more depth to my horror.

Also a bit jarring was the fact that so many characters just happened to be in the exact place where they could fight their deepest fears. I get that this is a tried and true means of getting through a character arc, but at the same time it seemed overly coincidental and forced. And there was one last-minute revelation about one of the characters that came out of nowhere and seemed like the author just tossing one more curve ball at the readers because it would make us jump. Unfortunately, the twist wasn't set up properly or (to me at least) paid off well. It just made me like a character in retrospect much less, without adding much to the narrative.

On the plus side, I did read the whole thing. It was a fast, slick read, the kind of thing you could easily see made into a movie with a very hard R rating, something that would spawn endless direct to video sequels and play ad nauseum on SyFy and USA after two in the morning. The author is clearly talented and clever, and I'll give him another shot. This particular story wasn't to my liking, and if the next one has the same ugly tone (and typographical problems) that'll probably be it. But enough went right to warrant a few more dollars out of my pocket for another chance.(less)

I picked this up because it was cheap and because, although I thought Afraid was ridiculous, I remember it being a pretty compelling read. I hoped Endurance would be less ridiculous. Alas, it was not to be. Don't get me wrong; it's not a bad book. I zipped through it - Kilborn has excellent pacing and there's a certain easy readability about his books. It's also got a schlocky B-movie quality to it, and I love schlocky B-movies.

I was torn when reading reviews for Jack Kilborn Novels on which one I should read first because the reviews were so good. With that said: I chose Endurance and I'm greatly disappointed in it. It wasn't so much horror to me as it was comical and vulgar. It reminded me of a bad take on "The Hills Have Eyes" and I just couldn't take it seriously. I am addicted to these books. I can't put them down and I can't believe that someone has this sick of a mind. Although I think secretly we all have a sick mind in our own way. I think everyone has day dreamed of doing something brutal to someone or something once in there lives. Some more than others and Jack Kilborn says what we are all thinking.

Sometimes a novel is written so perfectly, and so precisely that you wonder why all books cannot be so. “Endurance” happens to be one of those novels. Everything is so perfectly paced, characters so perfectly described, situations so out of control and intense that you find yourself breathing heavy, your heartbeat rapidly approaching 180 bpm, your palms sweaty in anticipation of what comes along in the next paragraph.

I am one of those guys that goes by the maxim “The faster, the better” when referring to books. Don’t give me a long backstory, or side plots, or an over written description of settings. Just plunge me straight into the thick of things. Kilborn did EXACTLY that. The action and speed of “Endurance” are truly relentless. From the opening scene of Maria’s paranoia to the final sentence, there is never a second to catch your breath. And just when you thought you couldn’t possibly take anymore, that there cannot be anymore to possibly say, Kilborn is there to grab you and take you along even further.

As I just stated the plot is similar to films like “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, “The Hills Have Eyes” and “Vacancy” but who cares when something like this is so well structured from beginning to end. Plus, you have some of the best characters I can ever recall reading about in a horror novel. Imagine, a legless mountain climber, an ass kicking martial arts grandmother, a distraught fiance who will stop at nothing to get his woman back, and not to mention a whole SLEW of inbred, mutilated, and all together disgusting backwoods, murderous rednecks.

I wouldn't go as far as to say “Endurance” is “scary” but it is without a doubt, a creepy novel of terror and this could easily be a blockbuster summer horror film.

Kilborn is an immensely talented author and it’s a shame he isn’t as well known as less skilled, higher paid writers in this genre. It takes skill to pen a book as good as “Endurance” and Kilborn is, obviously, the man for the job. (less)

Listening to Endurance was like watching a B-Horror movie at a drive in. Although I had issues with this book, it was a fun time with plenty of gore, thrills and unsettling characters as well as heroic ones.

Talk about chasing your characters up a tree and throwing rocks at them. Jack Kilborne seems to do this with glee, almost never giving his characters a break. The bad guys are so bad and disturbing they not only terrorize but they mock their victims as well. Kilborne also ratchets up the suspense by switching character povs, just as something chilling is about to happen.

I felt that Kilbourne had some really strong characters. I really like all of them (well except the bad guys). They are tough and tenacious without being over the top. My favorites are Florence, the kick-ass grandma and Mal, the reporter who keeps his sense of humor under the most horrific conditions.

The gore and imagery is very disturbing. One may argue that it is over the top and borders on torture porn. Kilborne went above and beyond in giving his readers a visceral reaction. Although I may not have always enjoyed the more detailed scenes, they were certainly effective. One I can't get out of my head is the tormenters putting old blood in the shampoo bottles for unsuspecting guests.

There were some plot devices that were a little convenient, but not too altogether hard to accept given the path of the story. It's also kind of hard to believe that the events of this story could actually happen, but hey, the world's a crazy place. There was also quite a bit of telling which I didn't think was necessary.

I also did feel that I had seen versions of this story before. In fact it reminded me of the 1996 X-Files episode "Home" which according to imbd.com was actually banned from Fox Television after its first airing.

Although a bit hokey, if you are looking for a gory, gruesome tale with strong characters and a touch of the silly and bizarre, this is the book for you. Try the audio version, it's quite an experience.(less)

Hmmmmm, I am not sure what to say about this book other than it is not for the faint hearted. I love horror of all kinds and I have read other books by Jack Kilborn and loved them so when I came across this one on sale I had to jump on it.

After reading "Afraid", "Serial Uncut" and this book, I have come to this conclusion: no more reading books by this author, despite I have never read any of his mystery Detective Jack Daniels books. The reasons why I have chosen not to read any more books by him will be revealed as I go over my views on the book.

The reasons why I have chosen not to read any more books by him will be revealed as I go over my views on the book.

"Endurance" mainly takes place at a motel, the Rushmore Inn, in a secluded, remote location out in the woods in West Virginia that no one knows about, except for certain people who has ties to the motel. Anyone that checks in at that motel are never checked out, never to be seen again. The story opens with Maria, in town for the triathon, checking in at the Rushmore Inn after finding that the event hotel was full. In her room, she quickly discovers she is not alone and vanishes. A year after Maria's disappearance, five guests - Mal, Deb, Florence, Letti, and Kelly - checks in at the Rushmore Inn. All five are in town for the triathon. Mal is a journalist, Deb is an athletic who have lost her legs to a rock-climbing accident, and Florence, Letti and Kelly are women of three generation from the same family. As soon as they checked in, they discover they are now trapped within the walls of the motel and in desperation of escaping, the secrets within the motel unfold before them. Secrets so horrible that they are kept within the walls of the motel by ensuring the guests will never see the daylight again.

I was not impressed with the book. Considering it is of the horror genre, it didn't scare me at all. I felt that the writer failed to install fear into me as a reader and instead focused on writing the most sickest, goriest scenes he could think of. Like a pig in a mud pen, the book rolled itself deeply in gratitious gory and violence. And that did nothing for me. I have nothing against authors creating stories dripping with blood, gory, and violence (and it doesn't bother me), it simply isn't my bag of tea. What would define a scary book for me is a story dealing with the unknown, alongside with gradual build-up of the mystery, and this book isn't that type. Sure, in the beginning, I was as clueless as the characters of the story were on the secrets the motel harbored and who or what was behind them, but that quickly dissolved as the story progressed. It just simply blantly showed you all the horrific things happening in the story. As for the characters, they were difficult to empathize with due to lack of character developments except for Florence, the mother of Letti and grandmother of Kelly. As for the writing, it was written with simple, straightfoward language. While there was definitely creativity with how the story unfolded, it lacked any creativity with the written words. The author, in my opinion, is just telling me what's happening instead of showing me. The only advantage in reading with this type of writing is that it certainly kept the pages turning.

I could simply stop reading any of the Jack Killborn books and instead try out the Jack Daniels mysteries, but because of the author's lack of creativity with the written words, I chose not to.

If you wanted a book that resembles to movies such as the "SAW" series, check this book out. Otherwise, I'd suggest you to give this book a pass.(less)

It's a little hard to describe this book, overall I can see why the publisher wouldn't have wanted to invest in it - not because it's poorly-written (it's not), but because it's so well-written in the content of its pages.

I bought this book on my Kindle as a lark, mostly because of the "refused by the publisher" line. In the past, that's been a $1 or $3 mistake, but here it was well worth the price.

Having devoured Truckstop and Serial previously, I was eager to get into this longer novel, and it certainly did not disappoint my expectations for a fast paced, brutal, shocking ride. So much so for this review ive checked into a small bed and breakfast I found out in the country side. The lady who runs the place was a bit overly nice, but im sure everything will be fine....

Let me say, I have never been a fan of splatterpunk horror. I usually keep to the supernatural gothic weird writers out there, but... I seriously enjoyed Endurance. It felt like a strange indulgence. Endurance is branded as a “novel of terror,” hyped as being so intense that readers might not be able to finish it. I finally broke down and got the book. By the time I finished, I was laughing.

Make no mistake – for the average reader, Endurance scores high on the gratuitous gore chart and may be too uncomfortable for some.

I was first exposed to Jack Kilborn with the kindle single "Serial" that he wrote with Blake Crouch, and I have to admit I was not impressed. This story was an improvement.

If you enjoy things like the movie Wrong Turn, then you will love this book.

The characters' intelligence is definitely in question. If you were signed up to run a huge race and someone offered you a free night's stay, but the place was extremely hard to find and so far off of the beaten path that no one within 100 miles had heard of it, would you still stay there?

O.K. This book is different from anything I've ever read before. It's gory, gross and non-stop action. And when I say non-stop action, I mean that. There are no parts to catch your breath. I'm sure this is the way the author intended it, since the book is called Endurance. But personally, I needed some breathers. So much grossness all at once was too much for me. After reading Trapped by Jack Kilborn, I HAD to read more! I didn't think things could get any more suspenseful than it was with Trapped, but Endurance proved me wrong! Absolutely an incredible read. Once again, Jack Kilborn delivered horror and suspense with lots of gruesome images. I am not normally into this type of book....it was VERY graphic and filled my brain with some pretty horrific images. However, the story sucked me in and held on tight. 2 stars - this book is obviously a self publish, could have used a good liberal editing job, lots of typos, etc. Too much torture porn, and not enough characterization. Felt like a book that was written to become a movie. This book reminded me of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" mostly. It was a quick and easy read. The story builds the more you read. Some may think it is slow in the beginning, but it picks up sooner than you think.

There were pretty many suspenseful parts leaving me looking at my closet to ensure it was closed. I'm just glad that my bed is flat on the floor so I did not have to keep looking under there too! I just don't think I can be scared by a book. So I don't usually read in the horror genre because there's not a lot of point to it. But I decided to pick this one up and it was pretty good.

I read another review somewhere that this has a sort of typical B-movie plot. I'd agree with that. It's about an inn in the woods that lures guests in and traps them there. So it's got a lot of characters, potential victims and monstrous bad guys.

Story: 4 stars - this book is like a nice cheesy 80's horror movie (and I say that in a good way, it's the whole reason I bought it). Plenty of graphic violence, tension, and all around fun, if you're into the whole "cheesy horror movie" thing, like I am. The basic story is "family of inbred mutants lures people to their isolated bed and breakfast to be used for nefarious purpose" and the author does a good job of capturing the fear of those people.
