PhotobucketIf the West Virginia “family” that owns the Rushmore Inn bears even the slightest resemblance in ANYway to ANYone in your family then….HOLY GOAT BLOWERS BATMAN you need to stop reading this review and go deal because you have some meganormous genealogy issues to work through. Of course, I will be unable to assist you because I will be standing off at a safe distance with a flame thrower and a light saber ready to go either Medieval or JEDIevil on your ass if you so much as pivot in my direction...more

The usual suspect is a Nasty piece of sheriff, who used to be a bootlegger to boot before he came to the town.
Once you check into The Rusmore Inn Hotel you would notice the proprietor Eleanor Roosevelt has an obsession with American presidents.

“ That Eleanor Roosevelt has some issues. Hell she has a whole subscription.”

This story includes a house of horrors, a Charnel House of ill repute and torture, and a motley bunch of human crudeness and evil freaks.

The Rushmore Inn a homage to dead presid...more

Okay, let me be up-front about this ...no bullshitting ... Endurance is some sick and twisted shit. Some of the sickest and twisted-est shit I've read in a very long time. BUT ... and this is an important "but" folks ... Endurance is also solidly written, sublimely creepy in parts, with characters you can root for and other characters you can hate. And that's what saves this novel from the unsavory pit of mere torture porn.

In a recent documentary, Stephen King makes a very interesting point abo...more

Jack Kilborn is a pen name for J. A. Konrath. He tends to use this name for his more gruesome horror novels. J. A. Konrath is a talented storyteller who will enthrall you with exciting stories for the evening. Jack Kilborn will charm you just enough to be invited in then will stab you in the back and chew on your bones... while you're still alive.

Did I call Kilborn's novels gruesome? Let me rephrase. This is SICK SHIT! Lord knows I have a high tolerance for the grotesque but this tested my bound...more

I don't scare easily but I do have to admit that I couldn't finish listening to this on audiobook. Christopher Lane did too good of a job with his narration that I was scared and started to look under my bed whenever I took my ipod with me for a nap. So I grabbed the ebook and went from there. This is my first book by Kilborn but it will not be my last. Granted, this is my favorite type of horror story, so I am part of the built-in audience but I like how Kilborn approached the material and how...more

ALERT: PLOT SPOILER. I was drawn into Endurance for two reasons 1) the book was available through the online consortium at our library for check out (it's AMAZING how many e-books one can access via the library, but are constantly unavailable because they are checked out) and 2) I'm a fan of a good horror story. I was mostly drawn to this particular book because the description proclaimed (somethings to the effect) that the book was so horrific and obscene the publishers rejected it. What's that...more

This was a tough one. On the one hand, it was a clever twist on the typical "cannibal hillbilly" tale that's been done to death in recent years. Instead of being just a bunch of inbred/mutated creeps in the forest who hunger for human flesh, they were a bunch of inbred/mutated creeps in the forest who hungered for something much more important. I don't want to give away what, exactly, but it was fairly clever, and made me keep going well into the book.

Unfortunately, the rest of the book left me...more

I picked this up because it was cheap and because, although I thought Afraid was ridiculous, I remember it being a pretty compelling read. I hoped Endurance would be less ridiculous. Alas, it was not to be. Don't get me wrong; it's not a bad book. I zipped through it - Kilborn has excellent pacing and there's a certain easy readability about his books. It's also got a schlocky B-movie quality to it, and I love schlocky B-movies.

What Endurance suffers from is a bad case of paint-by-numbers plotti...more

I was torn when reading reviews for Jack Kilborn Novels on which one I should read first because the reviews were so good. With that said: I chose Endurance and I'm greatly disappointed in it. It wasn't so much horror to me as it was comical and vulgar. It reminded me of a bad take on "The Hills Have Eyes" and I just couldn't take it seriously. Though some parts were creepy, the overall premise just became too redundant with too many characters twisted into it and none of the "bad people" really...more

WELCOME TO THE RUSHMORE INN

The bed and breakfast was hidden in the hills of West Virginia. Wary guests wondered how it could stay in business at such a creepy, remote location. Especially with its bizarre, presidential decor and eccentric proprietor.

When the event hotel for the national Iron Woman triathlon accidentally overbooked, competitor Maria was forced to stay at the Rushmore. But after checking into her room, she quickly realized she wasn't alone. First her sui...more

I am addicted to these books. I can't put them down and I can't believe that someone has this sick of a mind. Although I think secretly we all have a sick mind in our own way. I think everyone has day dreamed of doing something brutal to someone or something once in there lives. Some more than others and Jack Kilborn says what we are all thinking.

After finishing Afraid I thought that Endurance was going to be a non stop, action packed story right off the bat but it did start off a little slower...more

This book is a trainwreck. Even though the rational part of my brain was telling me, "This is terrible, you're wasting your time, read something you're actually interested in," I just could not look away from the awfulness.

Kilborn/Konrath seems to think that "horror" and "gore" are synonymous terms, but coming up with graphic, creative ways to make your characters bleed to death is not enough to make something scary (neither does having a family of people with grotesque genetic defects trying or...more

The plot is far from original (how many times have we seen movies and other novels with backwoods inbreds and a group of unlucky victims) but forget everything you know about similar stories, and get ready to be caught on a white knuckle thrill-a-minute literary creep fest, because Jack Kilborn is going to amaze (and shock) you.

Sometimes a novel is written so perfectly, and so precisely that you wonder why all books cannot be so. “Endurance” happens to be one of those novels. Everything is so pe...more

Listening to Endurance was like watching a B-Horror movie at a drive in. Although I had issues with this book, it was a fun time with plenty of gore, thrills and unsettling characters as well as heroic ones.

The performance was spectacular. Christopher Lane did an amazing job of differentiating between character voices. The way he portrayed the bad guys was brilliant and very tongue in cheek. I was laughing out loud at some of his interpretations. He doesn't simply read the book, he acts it out...more

I tend to read a good bit of horror. I picked this one up because of the glowing reviews of others saying it scared the beejezus out of them. I must say this is one of most nerve-racking, spine-chilling books I have ever read. I started it at night before bed (great time to read horror) and didn't go to sleep. To rephrase, I finished it four hours later and could not go to sleep. After reading this you will check under your bed EVERY time you stay at a hotel. Books that claim to be "edge of your...more

I promise I'm not working for J.A. Konrath or Jack Kilborn, (who, by the way, are the same person) but he is my new best friend.

Endurance is sick and gory and a lot of fun!

It begins with an athlete who was offered a free stay at a remote bed and breakfast while she participated in a triathlon. However, once she got there, she was attacked by a bunch of deformed, insane, self-proclaimed descendants of royal and presidential blood lines; psychopaths who wanted her rare blood type for transfusion...more

Hmmmmm, I am not sure what to say about this book other than it is not for the faint hearted. I love horror of all kinds and I have read other books by Jack Kilborn and loved them so when I came across this one on sale I had to jump on it.

Was it scary? I would say not really. Creepy more than scary. Creepy with that I better check under my bed going through your head even though you know you are being silly.

Was is gorey? HELL YES and then some. A little over the top even for me at times and goo...more

"Endurance" is J.A. Konrath's second offering in the horror genre, written under his pseudonym Jack Kilborn. After reading "Afraid", "Serial Uncut" and this book, I have come to this conclusion: no more reading books by this author, despite I have never read any of his mystery Detective Jack Daniels books. The reasons why I have chosen not to read any more books by him will be revealed as I go over my views on the book.

"Endurance" mainly takes place at a motel, the Rushmore Inn, in a secluded,...more

It's a little hard to describe this book, overall I can see why the publisher wouldn't have wanted to invest in it - not because it's poorly-written (it's not), but because it's so well-written in the content of its pages.

I bought this book on my Kindle as a lark, mostly because of the "refused by the publisher" line. In the past, that's been a $1 or $3 mistake, but here it was well worth the price.

The setting is West Virginia, in a bed & breakfast called the Rushmore Inn, hidden along a bac...more

Having devoured Truckstop and Serial previously, I was eager to get into this longer novel, and it certainly did not disappoint my expectations for a fast paced, brutal, shocking ride. So much so for this review ive checked into a small bed and breakfast I found out in the country side. The lady who runs the place was a bit overly nice, but im sure everything will be fine....

*creak* ... er....what...

hmm anyway, this story centres around one truly messed up inbred family who kidnap and torture v...more

Let me say, I have never been a fan of splatterpunk horror. I usually keep to the supernatural gothic weird writers out there, but... I seriously enjoyed Endurance. It felt like a strange indulgence. The book honestly creeped me out, more than a novel has done, in a long, long time. This one has good characters, horrific situation and very suspenseful writing. I'm not sure I want to go to West Virginia after reading this. I will not ever see presidential memorabilia and not get the shivers. Was...more

Endurance is branded as a “novel of terror,” hyped as being so intense that readers might not be able to finish it. I finally broke down and got the book. By the time I finished, I was laughing.

Make no mistake – for the average reader, Endurance scores high on the gratuitous gore chart and may be too uncomfortable for some.

But in my opinion, Endurance suffers from two fatal flaws: 1) painfully awkward development of unbelievable characters and 2) a plot that is far too busy with said outlandish...more

I was first exposed to Jack Kilborn with the kindle single "Serial" that he wrote with Blake Crouch, and I have to admit I was not impressed. This story was an improvement.

Set in the hills of West Virginia, Endurance tells the story of Eleanor Roosevelt, a Presidential obsessed woman and the owner of the Rushmore Inn. The inn, hidden far off the beatin' path, is filled with presidential kitsch and memorabilia. Ms. Roosevelt will even tell you that she is a direct descendant of Theodore Roosevelt...more

If you enjoy things like the movie Wrong Turn, then you will love this book.

The characters' intelligence is definitely in question. If you were signed up to run a huge race and someone offered you a free night's stay, but the place was extremely hard to find and so far off of the beaten path that no one within 100 miles had heard of it, would you still stay there?

Ummm, no.

Especially if it was West Virginia (and I can say that, because 3/4 of my grandparents were from Kentucky.)

O.K. This book is different from anything I've ever read before. It's gory, gross and non-stop action. And when I say non-stop action, I mean that. There are no parts to catch your breath. I'm sure this is the way the author intended it, since the book is called Endurance. But personally, I needed some breathers. So much grossness all at once was too much for me. It reminded me of a B movie with killing after killing and no chance to breathe. I was intrigued. I finished it all in 2 sittings. So...more
Just My Opinion
After reading Trapped by Jack Kilborn, I HAD to read more! I didn't think things could get any more suspenseful than it was with Trapped, but Endurance proved me wrong! Absolutely an incredible read. Once again, Jack Kilborn delivered horror and suspense with lots of gruesome images. I am not normally into this type of book....it was VERY graphic and filled my brain with some pretty horrific images. However, the story sucked me in and held on tight. The character descriptions are so specific you...more

2 stars - this book is obviously a self publish, could have used a good liberal editing job, lots of typos, etc. Too much torture porn, and not enough characterization. Felt like a book that was written to become a movie. I liked the inherent idea of women who run triathlons being forced to cope in unbearable circumstances but the book really did *not* go the way I thought it would and took a freaky and unwanted turn into the macabre rather than suspense. I don't mind gore or I wouldn't read so...more

This book reminded me of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" mostly. It was a quick and easy read. The story builds the more you read. Some may think it is slow in the beginning, but it picks up sooner than you think.

There were pretty many suspenseful parts leaving me looking at my closet to ensure it was closed. I'm just glad that my bed is flat on the floor so I did not have to keep looking under there too! I love stories like this that make you check your locks and windows 2-4 times before even conside...more

I just don't think I can be scared by a book. So I don't usually read in the horror genre because there's not a lot of point to it. But I decided to pick this one up and it was pretty good.

I read another review somewhere that this has a sort of typical B-movie plot. I'd agree with that. It's about an inn in the woods that lures guests in and traps them there. So it's got a lot of characters, potential victims and monstrous bad guys.

The monstrous bad guys are many, and they're mutated and evil t...more

Story: 4 stars - this book is like a nice cheesy 80's horror movie (and I say that in a good way, it's the whole reason I bought it). Plenty of graphic violence, tension, and all around fun, if you're into the whole "cheesy horror movie" thing, like I am. The basic story is "family of inbred mutants lures people to their isolated bed and breakfast to be used for nefarious purpose" and the author does a good job of capturing the fear of those people.

Formatting: 3.5 stars - from someone who makes...more
