I read the original 1995 edition, but currently own (and am reading) the updated 2015 edition shown above.

This book is basically a neatly-sized encyclopedia of baseball, but unlike standard encyclopedias, Martinez first breaks baseball down into thematic sections before listing entries in alphabetical order. Martinez loves baseball and it shows - he is saturated in baseball knowledge and lore, but has a clear, easy style that is not the least bit pretentious. He shares his opinions but is happy

I loved this book! To anyone who does not love Baseball will probably find this incredibly boring, but I love Baseball and learning about the game. This book is insanely comprehensive from famous and legendary players and moments to things you may have never even heard of. It also gives quite a lot of insight and information into the often left out Negro Leagues, which in my opinion is just as important to the history and legacy of Baseball as the MLB.
