IF you liked this book, you are going to like Peretti's newest book, Illusion.
If you liked Peretti's other works, such as The Oath or the Present Darkness series, the trend in reviews seems to indicate that you won't enjoy this as much.
In Prophet, Peretti hits the mark with his development of relationships. The characters are real and you can feel their hurt and their hopes. Peretti does a good job of making you want them to win and to heal; this book seems more personal than his others. If y...more

One of my favorite lines in the book: "if God is speaking to you, you would be the greatest of all fools if you harden your heart against Him...you aren't fooling me, and I guarantee you, you aren't fooling God." (page 216).
Immeasurably, John finally asks himself "Who am I?" and God hears his cry. He runs from the truth and doesn't want to hear God's response but eventually John has to revisit this same question he asked in his youth (also saying, God use me). We run from God, and want to live...more

I grew up a preacher's kid, so the language and underlying message of The Prophet was not lost on me, though, admittedly, you wouldn't have to be a preacher's kid to get it. It's pretty front and center and not at all hidden.
I've read a lot of Christian Literature, growing up PK as I did, and I'll be the first to say that Frank Peretti is one of the best, maybe the only decent author, as far as the genre goes. He can build a story and hold the reader, and that's definitely the exception, rather...more

I did not finish this book. The subject matter is not to my taste so I could not get involved in it. This should not put off other readers who might find it very good. John Barrett a news reader discovers that he has psychic powers, apparently inherited from his father. These set them in a direct relationship with God. His father died while campaining against an abortion clinic guilty of serious malpractice. John believes his father was murdered, and the evidence seems to point to the governor (...more
My Mom had me read this book when I was in High School. I'm so glad she did, it really changed my life.
It's the reason I don't watch the news on TV, ever. It's the reason I question any kind of 'fact' that comes from television. It's the reason that I still feel like news television is just a really great soap opera.
Granted, being 15/16 years old and reading this book is going to make an incredible impression on you, but this is one of those books that stuck with me through the years and changed...more

Peretti's books are hard to get into...really slow in the beginning. Although, his books always finish with an amazing ending. Same goes for Prophet.
Prophet was an interesting read. Very theological. Throughout the entire book you follow the story of a TV anchorman, a reporter, a rebel son, and families and friends dealing with death(s). All the time you are asked the question: "What is Truth?" and if a person finds Truth, do they tell the world and not care what people think...or bury it? Deal...more

Ehhhhhhhhhhh, really dated (uh, since when do we believe that abortion providers and tv news anchors/etc are part of an evil anti-Christian plot? I'm quite pro-life and I found that portion of the plot rather disturbing just because I can't believe that so many people would be like that), not very well written compared to Peretti's newer works, not as much prophet stuff as I would've expected from the cover/description (in comparison to the other aspects of the plot, the prophet-power stuff only...more
Another enjoyable read from Frank Peretti. Didn't like it quite as well as the Darkness series, but it was an interesting story that asked a number of interesting questions. The novel tells a story of a quest for truth where media, art, and politics collide, specifically around the issue of abortion. The book seems to assume that the reader will not be in favor of abortion, or if they are, that they will be persuaded that abortion is unsafe or that abortion doctors are uncaring. While those thin...more
To be honest, the thing I remember most about this novel is that I read it over a couple of weeks after the birth of my first daughter. It sat on her changing table, and I read it a few pages at a time while feeding her in the middle of the night.
As I recall, this is one of Peretti's "quiet" novels, the ones that don't involve massive supernatural armies or excessive violence. I prefer this side of his work, yet I can't deny that this one in particular made little impression on me. Must have bee...more

Someone who has been "following" my reviews sent a message asking why I didn't post one about this.
I am still reading it.
Folks, I posted this joint on July 5th. Everyone who knows me knows that I read a novel in 24 hours or less if time permits. I have no life. So why am I still reading this novel?
I love Mr. Peretti's body of work, but this one...this one is as dry as stale crackers. The topic of abortion is timely, and may save many women's lives. But you have to get through the novel to get...more

Another quick and engaging read by Peretti. He has a great way of telling a story where the action and conversations and the people are straight out of the real world...you could believe that this was happening now...with the details of someone familiar with the professions and surroundings, all while giving you an entirely different perspective due to God's hand being involved. A book like this just opens your mind to how big God is and that you don't really consider that fact on a regular basi...more
When I first picked up this book, I wasn't really sure what to expect. I mean, I'd read many Frank Peretti books before, so I figured this would be another great thriller... but it wasn't.
Why wasn't it? Because it was different. It was politics, scandal, abortion, and mystery as well as suspense. There were very little "supernatural" elements in the story, which is really what surprised me. I kept waiting for something really unusual to happen, (not that things didn't), but this was different th...more

A forties something news anchor must deal with God. His father is a prophet, who is killed. He is given the mantle and must confront the current governor about lies about abortion and the death of the governor's oldest daughter. A bit fluffy. The thing I really didn't like was how characters were thrown together without any apparent intro. I had to reread parts several times to make sure I hadn't missed something. I'd buy it hardover if I could find it cheap.
I'd have to agree with Abby. I forgot just how wordy a Peretti book can tend to be. Good grief the description. But that's just how he is and it's exactly what makes him a fabulous author. He's all about the detail.
I love this novel, but of course I love all of his novels thus far. I really enjoyed the story. He was looking at a very different and complicated aspect of our society, and I was not expecting it to be such a deep read. I basically had to power my way through it because of the emotio...more

I thought it started out a little slow but if u hang in there it has a great ending. It made me step back and think, 'Do I know the Truth?' and 'Where am I going?'. Thanks Peretti 4 your books. They always make me examine my life, make sure I'm on the right path. Sometimes that path is the hard one but if it's the path God wants me 2 take, then it's the right one!
I liked the Prophet but not as much as This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness. The story in this book had a slow build. I felt it lacked the thrilling suspense that Frank Peretti's books usually have. It took too long to get to the meat of the story for me. I kept losing interest and as a result it took me about a week to finish the book.
This book was difficult for me to immerse myself in. I wanted to love this book. I read This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness many years ago and hold on to the intense memories I have of both. They were phenomenal! So I find it a difficult task to review a book I expected to move me and fell short.
The premise of the story was great and one I completely agree with. Today's "news" is an abomination of the word. I just felt a disconnect with the characters...I can't explain it. It was a n...more

If it hadn't been a Christmas present, I would have given up trying to read it ages ago. It took six weeks and 300 pages to get interesting. I'm glad I stuck with it,it turned out to be a good story, but as I really don't enjoy his writing style, I doubt I'll be reading any more of his books in the near future.
This was what I thought Peretti's worst work, the story was dreadful and dull. To be honest his writing his writing style is nerve shredding, I power through every time however, but honestly every page just felt like a waste of time. I felt like I could've accomplished something instead of reading this book.

After working in the news world, this book was very interesting to me. Seeing and knowing how a tv station and news room operates really makes you appreciate this book.
