In an altogether unexpected change of pace from the evil flamboyance of his phenomenal Perfume and the Kafkaesque paranoia of The Pigeon, the brilliant German writer Patrick Süskind joins forces with Sempé, the illustrator of New Yorker magazine fame, to bring us a haunting and deceptively simple tale of childhood, innocence lost, and memory as seen in flashback through th ...more

description

The title of Patrick Süskind's short story Die Geschichte von Herrn Sommer is somewhat misleading. This is not really the story of Mr. Sommer, but that of the narrator's childhood and his childhood memories. Herr Sommer is a mysterious figure, who appears out of nowhere and races through the landscape in all weathers. He is like the narrator's own memories, which seem to pop up out of nowhere and hurtle past at a great speed. The reader is also propelled through the book at this running pace, wh

Mr. Summer's Story was a very refreshing read. I picked it out from a shelf in the library because it was skinny, short, and plain, and I read it because I discovered it had pictures. I grabbed my attention by being inconspicuous, and I wonder if this reverse psychology was intentional.
Anyways, the story of Mr. Summer is heart breaking and simple, and it is one of the rare books tat I would read again, and I am planning on buying it. I have also developed an interest in the author, and am half-

There are some writers whom you can just trust to deliver great stories, either in a size of a brick-heavy-book or a small choco truffel. Patrick Sueskind is one of them and he has yet to dissapoint me.

In this seemingly without plot book he managed to give me a writing so entertaining it also reminded me how playfull and acrobatic German language can be. He also succeed in such a limited pages to tell a story of a man driven to always to walk, a boy with affinity to flying and tree climbing, an

The writing style is absolutely absorbing! The book is one long rant of an old man as he reflects on the period's of his life that were impacted by the strange presence of one, Mr. Summer's. The narrator captures the imperfections, flaws, adventures, and emotional rollercoaster that we all experience as children. As the story progresses, it maintains it's intensely insightful explication of the experiences of youth. Although I usually hate books that use run-on sentences, I loved the narration. ...more

The strangest story I've read this year. Seems like narrator really fell from the tree and hit his head...
Despite the name The Story of Mr. Sommer, Mr. Sommer is barely there. It's more like that boy's life with few glimpses of lonely walker, Mr. Sommer, in the background.
Hm.
But still, it gives me something to think about.

Jár a maximális pont a különleges hangvétel, a különleges fordítás (!)

The clean, simple language through which this magical childhood story unfolds is as smooth as silk, and elegant as German prose can be. Reading Susskind's book in the original German was like strolling down familiar byways that I had first know when studying this versatile and highly literary language. The form he uses is also a good match for the themes explored in this tightly woven and approachable novella. I would go so far as to say the book reads like something meant for the oral tradition ...more

This children's book for adults definitely lives up to its promise to be a coming of age story with a strange and mysterious twist. When Mr. Sommers' seemingly endless and frantic walks through this narrator's boyhood leave us scratching our heads and asking questions about why he does what he does and what motivates him, Suskind is inviting us to ask the very same questions about ourselves. The stark telling of this dark tale (which is definitely for adults, make no mistake) reads like a parabl ...more

A quick read, it's simple and complex at the same time. Bits of childhood nostalgia sprinkled throughout. The character of Mr. Summer elicits compassion. Lovely illustrations. Despite the pics I don't recommend it to kids, it's a bit to deep for that - I'd say age 13 and up.

After spending the 1970s writing what he has characterized as “short unpublished prose pieces and longer un-produced screenplays”, Patrick Süskind was catapulted to fame in the 1980s by the monodrama Der Kontrabass [The Double B
