In this story CJ brings to us a few characters that most of us have known through our childhood nightmares and she forces us to see them in a new light. Literally. I remember being told about bogie men and fiends as a child, and my active imagination sure did a bang up job with their physical attributes. Then I go and read this story where fiends and bogey men live in harmony with one another and even humans. Now, as I took that in, and I read CJ's description of these out of this world characters, I tried so VERY hard not to mix how she saw her bogey men with how I saw my bogey men of my not so long ago adolescence. And my descriptions of them won out and if I were a human in that world I think I would have passed out and stayed that way until the end of the book. CJ made me like bogies and fiends!! But just the thought of seeing my nightmares of these things come to life?

Going on that, this story is about a young man named, Vanlyn, who is the son of a king, well the 2nd son of the mean, ugly, cruel, cold hearted king actually and he's treated like shit. Plain and simple. Vanlyn is what I call a gentle soul with a good as gold spirit. He's almost too innocent, too trusting, and I really wanted to reach through the e-reader and hug him one minute and slap him the next. This poor guy is stuck in a home with not only a cruel father but a jerk of a brother named, Ardent.

Applause goes out to CJ for making me hate that deep in the closet, bigoted, son of a jerk!

Moving on: At the start of the story Vanlyn comes across a stranger in his father's home and his name is Dane Tanderes. He apparently found himself being chased by fiends and went to Vanlyn's home for help from the king. Well Vanlyn has special abilities, so he knew almost immediately that something was different about Minister Dane Tanderes. He just didn't know exactly what that was. It's not until Vanlyn is taken prisoner that we find out Dane isn't a human any longer. He's a fiend and he's walked in the darkness for a long time due to the sin he committed while he was a human. It's a sad sad tale to hear Dane tell it. Both of these men have so many past issues that a whole back story should be created in its own book.

Okay, I was speaking of abilities: one of Vanlyn's abilities is that he can communicate with animals, insects, and the like. They are comfortable around him and trust him. That tells you something of his inner self.

Well, early on in the book Vanlyn is sent by his evil, cold hearted father, who by the way shunned the death of his wife and daughter before the story even began, to his death by going into war against the fiends. Vanlyn is a scholar, not a fighter, and this was nothing more than a sentence to his death and his father was very well aware of it. Of course Argent, that jerk, was behind it and come to find out other things that soured my stomach. One thing leads to another and Vanlyn, who sets out to do his father's bidding, knowing he's going to die, ends up in the claws of a fiend and is taken hostage. When he awakens from that experience he finds himself in a bed in a plain room and alive. Come to find out he's the hostage of one, Dane Tanderes.

So, up to that point the story is high action. Lots going on with fiends and the humans, and the bogies too. Vanlyn is out of sorts with his situation, he's angry, confused, and get this: homesick!! What?? I mean he isn't treated badly by Dane, or the bogies that help take care of him, and he eats and bathes in a cavern, and Dane treats him wonderfully. Well yes, Dane took the prince for his own means to get the king to knock his shit off, and because Vanlyn knows this, he sets about trying to find a way out. I mean if it were me, in Vanlyn's place? I'd make a nice home in Dane's home. Well Dane had to place a ghee to keep Vanlyn from escaping and this does anger Vanlyn but he deals with it. The one thing I did find interesting were the dreams he began having by Dane's will. Dane also had special abilities, and one of those was conjuring. Lucky Vanlyn. Oh, I forgot to mention one thing: Dane is a fiend and he has wings! Where does he put those things when he and Vanlyn get down and have fun?

Of course Dane falls in love with the young prince, and wants nothing more than to make him happy, but he has an island of people to take care of and they all look to him to do just that, so his personal needs must come last. For a while he has fun playing with his young prince, jumping in and out of his dreams, or creating illusions for the prince because get this: Prince Vanlyn didn't know he was gay. He thought that, due to what society says, men and men don't make love. It's a perversion and it is an embarrassment to the family. At one time Vanlyn did lie with a distant cousin just for relief and nothing ever came of it but a one night stand and a good time. So, Dane sets out to show him it's okay to love another man and make love with said man. Things sorta go down a bit for me in the story around this time and CJ used a lot of space to do what we all know I like the least: Description. There was just an overload of it that wasn't necessary. I just wanted to get on with the story and on with their lives. The animals were a lot of fun for me though. Vanlyn actually blended with a wolf, hornets, a cat, mice, and I forget what else. That did add flare to the story line though and I felt that it was needed at that time.

OH I almost forgot to mention that CJ can write some HOT BDSM scenes!! WOW....I found myself wishing there was more of that in the story, and less of the background description. The one thing I can't quite understand though is why it took me so long to get it read...Generally I can read a story this size in no time, get my review done and get on with it. But this story here took me a few days and I don't know why. I don't want to over analyze it, I'm just wondering.

Almost at the end of the story poor Vanlyn is being sought after by his father and his brother and guess what they want to do to the gay prince? NOT telling you'll need to read it. And OMG Poor Dane! I want a Dane please?

Do I recommend? Yes! If you enjoy fantasy realms and bogie men and fiends, and hot sex scenes? By all means read this one.

I'm very conflicted about this book. I wasn't impressed for a long stretch, and finally, when the two characters found themselves in danger and in need to fight to help their people, they really came to life and with them the world in which they were in.

I didn't quite like Dane and Vanlyn. In books where sex is used as a mean to achieve a goal disregarding the feelings of the man who is seduced, I usually take sides with the weaker man, but inside I'm drawn to the stronger man. Here nothing of this happened to me. I really disliked Dane, because he often criticized behaviors that were his with regards of his relationship with Vanlyn. He achieved his goal with Vanlyn, and it was clear that it was a bittersweet victory, but I couldn't see his torn soul, the real regret of what he did. On the other hand, Vanlyn surrendered but his resistance didn't feel real. Now I'm probably contradicting myself, but even if there is a clear attraction between the two, so there was a reason for Vanlyn to give himself to Dane, he didn't do it with all his self-respect intact. So, what am I trying to say? That in the first half of the book, the two main characters in my opinion weren't strong enough.

The third quarter of the book was a bit weak, in my opinion. The love words were spoken but I had to wonder when it happened that the two fell in love. They told that they were in love, but there wasn't really something that conveyed their words. I also felt that all the dream-weaving wasn't really interesting. It created a few flashbacks that explained the past, but it was as if things were told again and again. The author decided to introduce the readers slowly to the characters' past, unveiling it layer by layer, but it didn't flow very smoothly with the rest of the book. It was like all the action had to stop to allow the recollection, and then it went forward again. And the two became too emotional and I thought they were both tougher than that.

The last quarter of the book was magnificent. All the world of magic really came to life, Vanlyn got hold of his powers and I was enthralled by his interaction with the animals. In the end, Vanlyn proved to be worthy of his rank as a prince and I was very happy with this, because he really seemed too flat at the beginning. I don't think Dane was as good, maybe because he also took a few dumb decisions, he didn't consult with anyone and he took decisions for Vanlyn, disrespecting him in a way.

I think the world building was great and I especially liked the bogies, these loyal and helpful creatures, perfectly balanced between the earthly world and the other world. There were a few editing issues, I think the book could benefit from a more thorough proofreading.

Despite these defects, it is often the last impression that decides my rating, therefore it's four stars for me.(less)

The first impression I had of this book was the contrast with the yaoi style cover (even if the characters are all-over western type) and the almost savage romance content of the book. If you are not used to my passion for old romances, maybe you don’t know what exactly a savage romance is: a genre that was pretty popular in the ’70 and ’80 to then going into almost oblivion. In the savage romance there was usually a spirited heroine (here is a fair hero) who is kidnapped by the dark stranger, the hero, and they fight for most part of the book, until the fair hero finds out that the dark hero is not so bad after all, and that he has his reason to kidnapping him, and that, well, it’s better to make love than to make war. An homemade Stockholm syndrome is maybe at the base of this turn in the romance, but we romance lovers are good hearts, and our explanation is always love.

What is probably strange is that the author managed to make of these quite stereotype characters, two original heroes, and it was not simple, since the M/M fantasy romance, recalling a medieval setting, is something that is pretty common now. But indeed C.J. Black was good in that, so good that this book won 3° place as Best Characters in the Rainbow Awards, and I can assure you that the judges reading it were not easy to please. Probably the author managed such success since she didn’t over killed the setting with too much details, just enough to give an idea of darkness and danger, to recreate this world that was an antechamber of Hell. She then proceeded with the characters, again giving enough details for the reader to imagine them, but not boring him. Of course this is a fantasy, and fantasy stories are not known for being short: this novel counts more than 250 pages, and they are in small characters, so if you like a good development of story and characters, you will find both here.

The second most important aspect of the novel was the chemistry between Dane and Vanlyn, and here probably the yaoi elements make their brief, and only, appearance in a novel that has mostly, as I said, its roots in the western fantasy romance genre: these characters are, after all, two men in love and the sex is an essential part of their life; the sex is also a way to link the dark Dane to the fair Vanlyn, a way to bring light in his life; Dane set out with the idea to seduce Vanlyn and to use him as a pawn, but I think that in the end, he was the seduced one, and that is again another pretty common element of the old savage romance.

To summarize I think this was a pretty good fantasy romance, and for is to say a lot since (and yes, I know you are tired to hear it) fantasy is not really my cup of tea, but savage romance was, and a lot ;-)

Illusions of Night is definitely not one of my normal choices. A mix of historical and paranormal, it was a very good story but I found myself putting it down to come back to it later often.

The premise is similar to that of a traditional historical romance minus the paranormal magiks. There are pros, there are the cons of this story and I’ll try to touch on each one.

The overall outlook of the book I enjoyed. Great plot, but the abundance and over much description could have been less and would have made the store more, if you get my drift. Sad for the author who puts their all into a book. :shrugs: I’m anal so deal with it. I can overlook one, but when said one goes from that to a five and up to a ten then it becomes a nuisance when they are unsurpassable.

It starts off as being a strong read with plenty to hold your interest and at some point, which I’m still contemplating it dwindled off to being so, so on my interest level. I’m going to garner is was about the some time after Dane had kidnapped Vanlyn and when Van got comfortable in his surroundings it lulled off to a trickle. What commenced as a seduction turned into a long strung out vacation in a sense and what started to appear as just another loving couple that from time to time came with various everyday issues. The two settled into being a cozy couple and battling whatever came their way. Into the last 40 pages or so the action picks up to non-failing ending. If you see the story on a different level so be it. I’m curious to know others thoughts.

Now it goes to just cause in saying that and to admit that the characters are savory and enjoyable, the sex scenes are hot with the added D/s thrown in the mix which if you get your rocks off on some bondage you’re good to go here. I even applaud the new types of beings in this story like the fiends and those bogies that work for Dane. Very creative. Vanlyn is fearful, but as the time goes by his bravery picks up. Depending on who and what he’s confronted with. Dane the ever fearsome fiend goes to show that he really is human after all and has more human traits than his demon persona by being sensitive, loving and caring towards Vanlyn. Another part I applaud.

I notice there to be references in the story that thought me to believe that the principal era of the story took place many eons ago, but as you read along you’ll notice where some instances are relating to what we’d only see in present day. The boggled me a little and my confusion conflicted.

These are the facts and only the facts folks. I do believe readers would like it apart from the little tiffs I’ve discovered and the material is quite a pleasurable story. In all honesty I found the animals, critters and insects the most amusing in their contribution to this book. They are very humorously entertaining.

From the getgo this book rated as a 2.5 star but I’m going to give it one extra star for the book cover which is exemplary impressive. 3.5 is the final rating.

The plot is your basic humans versus demons in an age old struggle for power, land, and dominance. Dane is the leader of a small island but he also happens to be a fiend. After an act of extraordinary stupidity and selfishness, Dane has been reborn as a fiend from hell. He retains his inherent goodness though and works hard so that his people and land prosper. Of course another lord of the realm has decided to attack the fiends for glory and power. Dane is trying to keep his people out of it and devises a plan to seduce and betray the lord’s youngest son to shame the lord into giving up his war. Predictably Dane falls in love with the son and can’t go through with his plan. That doesn’t stop the war mongering lord though.

The plot is actually pretty complicated and the world building even more so. Some of the world building is truly inspired and unique. The fiends and humans both are given complexity. Some of each side are predictably cardboard evil with cruelty in every pore while others offer equally empty goodness and shinning light. Then there are those humans and fiends that are not fully good but not totally evil either. They’re simply filled with strengths and weaknesses, flaws and virtues. This is where the most interesting characters always lie. The boogies are wonderful and a great inventive touch to the story. The demons from hell are nicely depicted and offer a mythology that is more complex than the simple minions of Satan. Both of these details show the author’s creativity and cleverness. These sorts of concepts kept pulling me back into the story.

The world building has some problems though. It’s high fantasy but never quite manages to stay there. There is the historical feeling with titles and pomp and circumstance associated with high fantasy. Yet there are numerous touches that bring the story into a much more modern age. The writing seems to flip between the two arbitrarily, which throws off the pace and tone of the story. It’s disconcerting to find modern details in the historical setting, which combined with numerous editing mistakes, make the story sometimes awkward to read.

Additionally the actual focus of the book seems to drift frequently. There is a very strong beginning (100 pages or so) where the characters are introduced and basic plot set up. Here Dane meets and later kidnaps Vanlyn and there is a push/pull dynamic between the two. They have an immediate connection yet Vanlyn is a prisoner and wants to go home. Here the story definitely begins to drag and slow quite a bit. Vanlyn spends a lot of time homesick and wishing he could return home. Yet his father and brother have abused and belittled him for years, heaping humiliation after humiliation on him. So Vanlyn’s musings start to feel like immature whining. Vanlyn continues his whining until he falls in love with Dane and the story continues with the two having sex often, while hanging about Dane’s house as he works. Not much happens and this is supposed to progress the romantic relationship but my attention wandered frequently.

The BDSM relationship feels weird to me as well. Vanlyn supposedly submits to Dane, which is all well and good. The sex scenes are pretty hot with only a bare minimum of D/s so it keeps things interesting (which I needed). Unfortunately this thread feels totally lost as Vanlyn gains more confidence and power. The later parts of the story get moving with more action and no sex so that’s to be expected, but the underlying theme of D/s which is always present at Dane’s home is suddenly missing entirely. The complete lack is what threw me off. Not to mention the story feels like it ends unfinished. There is some wrapping up but a lot of issues still to be resolved by the end.

Overall this is an ok story (2.5 to 3 stars for me) but I struggled to keep reading it. There are enough clever moments to keep me reading but this is not a story I’d read again. I’d probably give the author another try if there is a sequel or a non-fantasy novel.

It's even got the Comedic Sociopathy and some red string strangling.

Don't ask me what it's about because I was too busy face-palming/head-desking over the "dynamics" throughout the thing to really pay attention to the supposed very engaging overplot. Still. I guess it was moderately amusing in a "is this serious? It can't be serious" sort of way.

BDSM is not really my thing so it's a bit hard to rate this one. Also I somewhat disliked Dane.
Kasa has a very good review for this book. I had the same problem like her to finish this book and I'm a fast reader and usually read two book in a day.(depends on the length of course^^) To finish this one it took me days! The plot picked up in the middle, which made it easier to finish. It's not a book I would like to reread or revisit though.

The first word[s] that pop into my mind on finishing this novel was "omg.LONG." The story was well done, yes, the plot legitimate, the characters mostly 3-dimensional and the different creatures unique and interesting. The methods Dane uses in order to seduce Vanlyn are unique and really very engaging.

I vacillated in my opinion about this book as I read it. It was very emotionally wrenching for me... In the end, though I'm very glad I read it. Vanlyn and Dane were so real and easy to grasp and love. By the time I got halfway through I couldn't put it down for anything. Not an easy romance, but amazing. I didn't want to leave.

If you like Stockholm syndrome along with the mental and physical abuse spiced up with MC's absurd behavior and reasoning, this book might be for you.

I was a little slow to get into this at first but it soon picked up speed. I enjoyed watching Vanlyn develop over the course of the book. The world the story was set in was well developed, although I would have liked to have seen a little bit more of the world of the bogies.
