A spectral war has torn the veils that separate life and death into pieces. Beings of the darkness slip through these rifts as armies of man wage a losing battle against the corporeal invaders.

Dane Tanderes was once a mortal man condemned to an unjust death, cursed to live as a fiend until such time as the gods decree him worthy of forgiveness. Now that he has escaped back...more

Illusion of Night took me on one hell of journey and it's one that I'm not too sure about, even after I got done with it and put it out of my head for a few days. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, I'm just saying that I needed those days to process this a bit. CJ Black did a super job building this fantasy world where she forces us to use our imagination and grip the tale she told from her minds eye.

In this story CJ brings to us a few characters that most of us have known through our childhoo...more

01/18/13: Revised rating after a couple of years of reading m/m: from 4 to 3.

I'm very conflicted about this book. I wasn't impressed for a long stretch, and finally, when the two characters found themselves in danger and in need to fight to help their people, they really came to life and with them the world in which they were in.

I didn't quite like Dane and Vanlyn. In books where sex is used as a mean to achieve a goal disregarding the feelings of the man who is seduced, I usually take sides wit...more

The first impression I had of this book was the contrast with the yaoi style cover (even if the characters are all-over western type) and the almost savage romance content of the book. If you are not used to my passion for old romances, maybe you don’t know what exactly a savage romance is: a genre that was pretty popular in the ’70 and ’80 to then going into almost oblivion. In the savage romance there was usually a spirited heroine (here is a fair hero) who is kidnapped by the dark stranger, t...more

Illusions of Night is definitely not one of my normal choices. A mix of historical and paranormal, it was a very good story but I found myself putting it down to come back to it later often.

The premise is similar to that of a traditional historical romance minus the paranormal magiks. The hero kidnaps the heroine (or in this case hero) and holds her hostage until either the family submits, she sees things from his point of view or yep, you guessed it, they fall in love. I stopped reading those t...more

There are pros, there are the cons of this story and I’ll try to touch on each one.

The overall outlook of the book I enjoyed. Great plot, but the abundance and over much description could have been less and would have made the store more, if you get my drift. The book was stop and go for me. Where I usually get through a story this size in I fraction at about 2 days it took me a full week. I did pick up on a few editing issues that were missed, but whomever edited this story didn’t do it justic...more

Illusion of Night has some great moments and a lovely cover, but I struggled to keep my attention in the story and frequently wandered away. In fact I often did things just to keep from reading since I would get bored too quickly about half way through the story. It does pick up towards the end and the idea itself has some great ingenuity but it’s also plagued with issues.

The plot is your basic humans versus demons in an age old struggle for power, land, and dominance. Dane is the leader of a s...more

This is...quite a match made in Stockholm...

It's even got the Comedic Sociopathy and some red string strangling.

Don't ask me what it's about because I was too busy face-palming/head-desking over the "dynamics" throughout the thing to really pay attention to the supposed very engaging overplot. Still. I guess it was moderately amusing in a "is this serious? It can't be serious" sort of way.

I'm a bit of a sucker for the M/M fantasy and sci-fi genre so I started this book with only a very little trepidation. Alas! What I found was a plot full of potential with characters that I was interested in learning about (although I admit, they're a bit trope-y) and a world that was interesting -- but it was all weighed down and overshadowed by the absolute worst grammar editing I've seen so far in a published book. Grammar errors, comma splices, and awkward sentence structure -- gaaahhh! I've...more

BDSM is not really my thing so it's a bit hard to rate this one. Also I somewhat disliked Dane.
Kasa has a very good review for this book. I had the same problem like her to finish this book and I'm a fast reader and usually read two book in a day.(depends on the length of course^^) To finish this one it took me days! The plot picked up in the middle, which made it easier to finish. It's not a book I would like to reread or revisit though.

The first word[s] that pop into my mind on finishing this novel was "omg.LONG." The story was well done, yes, the plot legitimate, the characters mostly 3-dimensional and the different creatures unique and interesting. The methods Dane uses in order to seduce Vanlyn are unique and really very engaging.

But shortly after the half-way mark I started losing interest. It picked back up quickly, but then just seemed to drone on and on and on. Many of the actions and scenes could have been...more

4-4.5 stars. It was tough for me to get into this, but once I did, I couldn't stop reading! Ending up loving both characters (though I didn't really like either at first) and the world building was good. (I loved the idea of humans and fiends)

I wish that the story had beem longer or that there was a sequel. I want to know that happens next. Even a book about where these two are secondary characters would be fine. I thought was a little wimpy, just a little bit.

I vacillated in my opinion about this book as I read it. It was very emotionally wrenching for me... In the end, though I'm very glad I read it. Vanlyn and Dane were so real and easy to grasp and love. By the time I got halfway through I couldn't put it down for anything. Not an easy romance, but amazing. I didn't want to leave.

I really thought it would get better but after having read 50% of the book, I decided to create a special GR 'could-not-finish' shelf. I loathed Dane and lost any respect for Vanlyn. If you like Stockholm syndrome along with the mental and physical abuse spiced up with MC's absurd behavior and reasoning, this book might be for you.

I was a little slow to get into this at first but it soon picked up speed. I enjoyed watching Vanlyn develop over the course of the book. The world the story was set in was well developed, although I would have liked to have seen a little bit more of the world of the bogies.

I am still deciding what to rate this - it goes back and forth between a 3 and a 4. I liked it, wanted to really like it, think I really liked it and then think, why??? How is that for a review?!?!?!?!

I was really trying to finish, but more and more kept bothering me. Finally just stopped.

I'm a multi-published author of erotic fiction novels and short stories, usually M/M, in the contemporary, fantasy and paranormal genres. I’ve been an author for almost thirty years and got my start on an old typewriter at the age of five and wrote my first novel at fourteen. Starting with the mystery genre, then fantasy, I wanted to expand my writing horizons and found erotica an intriguing subje...more
