Time and time again Danielle Steel has produced some of the most down to earth fiction out there and her latest, Family Ties is no exception. Bottom line: this novel is one of her best. Meet Annie Ferguson, am architect who becomes the guardian to her sister's three children after her sister is killed. We are then brilliantly given a flash-forward look at their lives over...more

Light easy read. The character Pattie sort of irritated me because not only did she have to be plain looking, unlike Annie, but she also had a mean side. Seriously, I wish there could have been something redeemable about Pattie because I felt a bit sorry for her. Now I really did not sympathize with Ted having slept with his professor. Sure Pattie took advantage by encouraging her student, Ted, to come over and "study" with her, but he was an adult and should have known better. No sympathy for a...more

Very good story about family and sacrifices. Annie seems to have to give up her own life (having just fallen in love) to raise her sister's three children after her sister & husband are killed in a plane crash. Annie does an amazing job of raising three incredibly different children. The oldest, Ted, does well eventually enrolling in law school, but becomes involved with an older woman with children who is abusive, a liar and psychotic. Liz, involved with a magazine and fashion design is too...more

Jane is married to Bill Marshall and have three children, the youngest six and the oldest twelve. Then the unforeseeable happens. While away, Jane and Bill are in a fatal plane crash that means Annie's promise to Jane to step up to the plate and care for her now orphaned children is now happening.

Due to some recent health issues, my brain is not quite back to normal ( I know most people will say it is never normal) This was an easy book for me to read and get back into the habit of reading.
Annie Ferguson is 26 years old and has a great career and boyfriend. Then when her sister and her husband suddenly die, Annie is the mother of 3 children. For years she concentrates only on the children. Then the children are basically grown and she has a quiet life.
Kind out of the blue the three k...more

This book reminds me of why I enjoyed Danielle Steele. I found this book had some story to it as opposed to a 300 page book with 150 of those pages just repeating what was on the first 50 pages.

It was sweet and warm and I just wanted to go be a part of their lives. Which I was for the duration of this book.

When Paul and Katie went to Iran? What scary stuff! I watched a movie based on a true story where the wife went with her husband and daughter to Iran and her husband decided he was staying and...more

I have been reading Danielle Steel books for years and really enjoy her. I do agree with some other readers that she tends to repeat herself quite often, but overall, I really enjoyed this book. As a mother, I could only imagine how Annie felt when Ted was in an abusive relationship. So sad to know that there are probably some men out there who just can't say no and leave. We usually hear about the women being abused, not the men. I also felt for her when Katie and Paul went to his home land in...more

Annie raises her sister's three children and is experiencing empty-nest syndrome. But she does discover that motherhood doesn't end when the "kids" move out on their own. It is hard to balance worry, letting "kids" make their own mistakes, and being their for them whenever they needed her. Could she have time to find her true love now?

Family Ties is a quick read. The characters grab your attention and you are anxious to see what happens to them. In true Danielle Steel style the characters live e...more

I love most of Danielle Steel books...they are one of the "comfort foods" of books. This one was no exception.

Annie Ferguson, at age 26, becomes a mother overnight...of 3 children...her nieces and nephew after her sister and brother-in-law are killed in a small plane accident. She devotes the next 16 years of her life raising the kids...and does a wonderful job. They all are now out of the house, coming home for the holidays, and Annie thinks this is all she ever needs in life. But of course, on...more

Okay, I know I'm slumming it a little with Danielle Steel, but I had to clear my mind after the intensity of the Steig Larsson books. Besides, I had never read a Danielle Steel book, and I figure as an American woman, I am required to read at least one.

I was pleasantly surprised. Although it was obvious that Danielle sacrificed quality writing/editing in favor of churning out the latest in her prolific book-writing machine, I found the characters likable and the storylines interesting, if sligh...more

When Annie was 26, she was a talented architect in Manhattan, her career was advancing perfectly, and suddenly, in the blink of an eye, her world changed forever. Her gorgeous sister Jane, and her pilot husband Bill were killed in a plane crash, when a storm hit them on their way home from a weekend away at Martha’s Vineyard.

Overnight, Annie became Mum to Jane and Bill’s three children, Katie 5 years old, Ted 8 years old and Lizzie 12 years old. They were devastated, and Annie had to be there fo...more

As Long as He Needs Me

Predictable Steele, but Enjoyable

Bright young architect Annie Ferguson seemed to have it all--good looks, a promising job, a new boyfriend, a cozy Manhattan apartment--then, with shocking suddenness, a phone call ended it all. Her sister and brother-in-law were killed in a tragic accident and, keeping a promise she'd made to her sister, Annie is left with her sister's three small children to raise. Although it meant a drastic change in her lifestyle, and even losing her boyfriend, who couldn't...more

This is another beautiful romance by Danielle Steel. It deals with the affairs of the heart. Annie Ferguson loses her sister and brother-in-law in a plane accident, when she's 26, and inherits their three children, who she loves so much. Since then, she puts her life on hold, raising them, and working hard on her career. Years later, they've all grown up, when Annie needs time for them to grow on their own and learn by their own mistakes. Her oldest niece Liz is a fashion editor for a magazine a...more

Very light reading, I got through this one in one day. Her books aren't as good as they used to be, but for some reason I'm always buying the next one! With that said, I'm not going to write up a synopsis since there are other folks on here that will write one or three in their reviews. I'd like to say that this one falls in between her good books and her really badly written books (in my opinion). There are four storylines for the 4 main characters in this book that were easy to follow.

I have to admit I did enjoy this book more than her others. It's still poorly written with so much repeating the same thing over and over [I have said her books will be great when I lose my marbles but I'm beginning to think possibly the author has and can't remember what she wrote from one chapter to the next]. The plot is better than her usual and her characters are very likeable. Sure her main character is a saint as usual but this one really is a nice person!

Florence and I listened to this last week while drving around. It seemed a little more darker than some others we have listened to, (I don't claim to be or will ever been a expert on romance novels), and the plot bounced around a lot, between four main characters and over ten minor characters. One thing I did like was that even though everyone had a happy ending, not all happy endings involved romance, some happy endings even involved breaking off romance.

This is the second Danielle Steel book I've read. After the first one (Matters of the heart), I thought to myself, 'Well, maybe that one was bad, I will try another and see if I like her any better...' -Nope! Still poorly written, repetitive, boringness that pushes me to NEVER pick up another D.S. book again! Sure, the family drama is a little interesting, but definitely not good enough to put yourself through reading it.

I have read just about all of Danielle Steel's books and her early ones are definitely my favorites. Then, somewhere along the line, the plots became very boring and predictable and the characters seemed to all be cut from the same mold....Then I read Family Ties and it was back to vintage Danielle Steel - interesting characters and plot. Loved this book and read it in 3 sittings.

I've been reading Danielle Steel books off and on since I was a teenager. I don't know if any of them were as bad as this. Wow.

Basically, it was the standard Steel repetition of her most recent works as written by a thirteen year old. I never felt like I knew the characters really well, but I sure as hell knew what they wore on a day to day basis. Blah, blah, blah.

It could have been a good book. The plot sounded like an interesting one. It just really lacked depth. Sort of makes me wonder if S...more

The character Annie Ferguson is a strong woman who raised her sister's children after she was killed in a plane crash. Now that they are almost grown, Annie realizes that her life has been shortchanged. That is until she meets a great guy in a hospital emergency room.

This book is well written as are most of Danielle Steel's books.

"This was actually one of the better Danielle Steel titles! A sister inherits her sister's children after a tragedy. This story is about how they made all work out, the tragedies along the way, and life lessons learned. Having 4 adult characters, you certainly got a mixture of issues affecting the characters!"

This is the first Danielle Steel book I've ever read. Its actually 3 and a half stars. I liked the story line, especially towards the end, but was not a huge fan of her writing style. I'll have to read another one of her books to know if its just this book or if that's just the way she writes. So if you like Daniele Steel, let me know your favorite book by her and I'll try that one :)

This was my first Danielle Steel book and I was pleasantly surprised. My mother wanted me to read this so badly because she thought I would really like it. I liked it much more than expected. I liked that it was an easy read with not too much romance. It had an element of mystery and really enjoyed how it ended.
Becky Schulman
Although the story is interesting, I am struggling through this book. I think that I have outgrown Steel's writing style. The repetition and incomplete sentences keep tripping me up.
Another "and they lived happily ever after story". In the real world, very little ends up as neatly as this true escapism book. I probably wasn't in the right frame of mind to read this right now.
Angie
I was disappointed. I have found the last few DS's very bland.. I get fed up with reading what they are wearing, and there is so much repetition. I just feel they are either rushed, or written by someone else. So predictable too. I got to nearly half way before I was interested in what was happening.

I dont' care for Danielle Steel except when I'm driving. The audiobooks are such no brainers I don't even need to turn them off in complex traffic. But after a couple of these titles lately I do have to give credit to this author turning out some twists and plots as a little more unpredictable than usual.
Meg
I had to laugh when I chose to read a Danielle Steel book after completing the Steig Larsson Triolgy. When I checked into Good Reads I found a review for Family Ties from another person that was doing exactly what I was doing.
A Danielle Steel book was a great, brainless read. I enjoyed the book and finished it in 4 days.

Since 1981, Ms. Steel has been a permanent fixture on the New York Times hardcover and paperback bestseller lists. In 1989, she was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for having at least one of her books on the Times bestseller list for 381 consecutive weeks. But Guinness was premature. The fact is that one or more of Ms. Steel's novels have been on the New York Times bestseller list for...more

“And if they really fuck it up and do make a horrible mistake, which can happen to anyone, from any culture, you still have to sit back and watch from the sidelines. It's their life. What you need is a life of your own. You can't hang on to them forever and live theirs or stop them from making mistakes. That's the deal. Once they grow up, they belong to themselves, not to us.” 19 people liked it
