So I've decided to stop reading this one although I'm not quite finished. I can't take it any more. As a lot of other people have said, the format for this book is really odd.

If you like lists you might really like this book. There are lists of every blood type and what types of blood those types can receive, lists of every kind of gun with the types of rounds that those guns shoot and what you might like to shoot with those guns, lists of food items, tools, and processes. Even More...

Not really sure how to classify this one - take a how to survive the apocalypse manual, mix it up with some fiction, add in a good dose of UN paranoia, subtract out a good editor (or any editor?) and you'd get something like this.

I like post-apoc novels but this one was just... odd at times. I sat and read it and enjoyed it (which is why I gave it a 'liked it' above) but there were still things in there that just seemed off

dialog used in place of non-fiction "how-to" More...

I received this book as a gift, and didn't know much about it before opening its pages. That said, I must say I was immediately intrigued by the cover. On it, the author refers to himself with his full middle name. Given this fact I felt that the Mr. Rawles must either be a serial killer, presidential assassin, or some sort of crazy person. This was quickly settled by the fact he includes a comma between his middle and last name, clarifying he is of the third type formerly mentioned. I must admi More...

For those of you who dont know, I have a non-merman little brother as well. It seems just like yesterday when he was wearing diapers (to school). Anyways, he is the most noble of the Rosses, if only one of us can make it to heaven, it will with out a doubt be him. Proof? He has willingly left the U.S. to teach 1st world norms at a finishing school for the disadvantaged. Now I dont take book recommendations lightly, so when he mentioned Patriots, well, lets just say I "read" it. H More...

I really like post apocalyptic novels.
This book fulfills all of my survivalist fantasies:
Collapse of life as we know it? check.
Long treks to safety? Check, in spades.
Defending against lawless bands of aggressive looters? Check.
Restoring utopian society (since we learned from our mistakes?) check.

I agree with the other reviews that the book could use some editing, but it wasn't so bad as to ruin the story being told. I liked the feeling that the book was More...

Fourteen years ago, when I first left the military, I did a lot of reading and research on the militia movement in the United States. This was only a few years after the Oklahoma City bombings, and I had met a few militia types while in the service. One of the books I heard referenced over and over again was called The Turner Diaries, so--of course--I read it. The Turner Diaries is one the most vile books ever written: it is a racist screed that is so horrific that I couldn't More...

I had an extra Audible credit and decided to check this book out after listening to Jack Spirko on the Survival Podcast talk about it from time to time. I enjoyed the prepping parts of the book and some of the action scenes. The plot jumped around time to time, making it difficult to follow.

I am not into guns and big chunk of this book deals with the various guns the characters used throughout the book in various situation. The author went into the guns with great detail, somethin More...

So I just finished "Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse" by James Wesley.

SPOILER! The evil government liberals did it!

You'll only survive if you're military trained, you should always start conversations with strangers by discussing the make and model of your gun and what modifications you did to it, the French and Germans are evil, oh and everyone will convert to Christianity by the end of the Second Civil War. It's inevitable.

I had hoped that someone who is a popular blog writer with a following would be able to string a few words together in an entertaining way. I was wrong. This is a list of equipment broken up by short biographies of unrealistic people set in a world that I don't recognize.

I agree that the loss of water, gas and banks would cause chaos...but I don't see much about how we get to that point beyond, "It's their fault."

I expected a novel that might let me inside the m More...

This is a fiction book but the author James Rawles a former Army Intelligence officer and author of the popular blog survivalblog.com wrote this story in such a way that you can actually learn real facts and knowledge that may save your life one day.
He takes the time to explain why the characters make the decisions they do and how they had learned what they needed to know to survive the apocalyptic economic fall of the United States as we know it (he even explains in detail how that realist More...

A fictional account of what could happen if the world as we know it came to a screeching halt. Written by the author of survivalblog, the story great plausibility to it.

Are there people who actually have reinforced their homes to create ballistic resistance? Likely true. For those of us who have not reinforced our homes, this book makes you think about surviving in a stricken society. For that reason alone, everyone should read this book or another Rawles' books.

After a total economic collapse, a group of hard-core survivalists make for their pre-stocked fortress in Idaho to fend off traveling hordes of looters and refugees. They eventually join other well-armed and organized groups in an all-out assault against UN troops trying to pacify the country for a new government order.

Patriots is a how-to book (applicable only to the ultra-wealthy) trying to be a novel. It is laden with excruciatingly detailed lists of weapons, gear, and skills. Th More...

Thank God this is over with. This is not a story. This is 300 pages about guns, stuff you need should the economy ever collapse, and about 20 characters that are all the same person. It's very random, it's very boring, and it's very subjective to this one guy's ideas of what would happen should the economy ever die for realz.

Yeah. I could say it's worth reading just because he does give a list of stuff it would be nice to have in such a situation, but really, don't waste your tim More...

This book was suggested by a Prairie Moon customer. I found most of the book to be interesting. There were deep descriptions of guns, military stradegy, and armed tanks. I plowed through those parts. The viewpoint was civilians taking on unlawful government. I found the viewpoint to be interesting. I also found it a little scary that this story really could happen. I am going to keep my eyes open for a used copy of this book because I want it for my personal library and the copy I read wa More...

I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it, so that's what three stars means: I liked it. I'm glad I read this book, but I can't give it a higher rating for this simple opinion: James Rawles should have either written a survival manual or a novel; he shouldn't have tried to mash them together. The plot, which is already a bit loose, is bogged down frequently by pages of technical information on guns, cars, and other gear. A large chunk of the early book is dedicated to introducing two key chara More...

Interesting story but the total collapse due solely to economic reasons was a little unbelievable. The religious prejudices of the book were a little annoying. Also the book bogged down in the pages long descriptions of guns, gun manufacturing, illegal gun altering, making other weapons, food storing, house securing, semi secure communications, illegal com gear altering, small group military tactics and anything else survival oriented. Would have been better as a novel and left this to his other More...

This is a manual on how to survive a breakdown of society thinly veiled within a story. The manual is interesting and that is what garned the book 2 stars, the story by itself is 1 star. If you want to read a good story, try "One Second After".

This book has just enough story to keep you going and I mean just enough. The characters are very wooden (Healer, Leader, Marksmen, Engineer, etc....) it is like putting together a Dungeons and Dragons party of characters. The ba More...

This book is the first in a series. It is written as an instructional manual/fictional novel. That format is unusual, so it does take a little bit to get used to. For someone interested in emergency preparedness, this is about a group of survivalists that have crossed every "t" and dotted every "i" when planning for an economic collapse. They have the best of the best. If you're looking for ways that you could personally improve your emergency preparedness, then this boo More...

This is, without a doubt, the worst book I've ever read. Horrible, corny dialogue. The entire premise seemed to be an excuse for the author to vent his insane conspiracy theories and talk about guns with an unhealthy passion. The worst part is, not only did it seem like the author thought there was possibility of this actually happening (there isn't); but he also seemed to be anxiously awaiting the end of civilization so he could finally use some of his weapons stockpile to off some of those god More...

I enjoyed the story in this book quite a lot, but I got frustrated with how he would insert all this technical stuff right into the middle of a plot line. The technical information was really good stuff, but I would have preferred that it might have been included in section in the back of the book. Other than that, I was an interesting read.

No, I didn't finish this one. Actually, I never made it past the first 2 chapters. This has to rate as one of the worst books I've ever picked up. It should be relabeled as a survivalist manual with a half-hearted attempt to throw some kind of a story line into it. The writing is really, really bad.

I liked this book quite a bit. It is easy to criticize though because it doesn't pull too many polictically correct punches. I like the tactics and the will too survive parts the most. I didn't mind the evangelism, but that will probably sour many readers rather quickly. some of the political rhetoric made me roll my eyes. I might read his non-fiction book about survival someday.

I enjoy a good "end of the world as we know it" book. This one was alright, but it was too heavy into religious yammering for my taste. I was trying to find another read similar to One Second After when I found this one. This one fell short, but I suspect my expectations were too high.

I really enjoyed this novel. It was written in a way to instruct the reader on how to prepare for what is coming. It certainly gives you things to think about and ideas of what you should be doing to increase your ability to survive if (or should I say WHEN) "the crunch" occurs.

The collapse of America and how one group survives it. Despite the different theories and views on whether its better to hole up and defend yourself or travel with a well equipped band of individuals, this book has some good ideas on things to consider and do.

Very thought provoking. A good read, and if you're into all the weaponry...then a very good read. Makes me want to start storing up food, supplies, and learn to live off the land. It's on my post-apocalyptic reading list and is not a disappointment. A must read!!!

If you read this as a novel it is written with way too many military details to read smoothly. If you read this as a thinly disguised "how to" book it is a wealth of information. I didn't understand some of it because I do not have a military background.

This book was just as good as "Survivors, and I'm glad I read it second. It picks up where "Survivors" left off and tell's you the fate of a few of the characters. The book is technical at times but I loved that because it gives me idea's on what I need to do. Great book would highly recommend it!
