Reread on buses, trains, in planes, the veranda's of art museums, alone, alone, alone: and then alone, over again in the blue of shadows, corners of libraries, under the gaze of weird convoluted coffee shop plants. I want to be you, Andrei Malraux.
Andre Malraux had an amazing life, but some parts of this "memoir" are god-awful boring...I think this is in part due to a bad translation, but what the hell do I know...Malraux knew everyone--Mao, Nehru, De Gaulle and did everything, including surviving a tank trap in WWII, flying a small plane through a cyclone and being captured by Nazis. At the end of the book, he tells the story of searching for weapons that members of the French resistance had hidden in a cave. He has to crawl through cert ...more

Absolutely Brilliant!

Fascinating account of Malraux's work with the French diplomatic corps. Wonderfully and evocatively written - an interesting look at historical figures and times. A great example of how the French use their intellectuals in government advisory.

As I know, the novel was translated by Ablohassan Najafi and Reza Seyed Hosseini. they got the award for their translation. It's a real intellectual novel.
French minister and personality. Can't remember much about it truth be told but I have since kearned that he was an inveterate liar.

Pompous and boring-will give it another try if I find it again-or just read about it.

The views seem, at least in the parts I read, typical of the colonial mind when it sympathises.
The concept of Asia as an ancient and dying civilisation took it's toll on us in Asia and I hold such thinkers responsible.
Mr. Malraux was a writer of great culture and humanity, but also of excellent style as can be seen from this text. However he seems so detached from his own memoirs, that at times one feels as if he is not even present.

one of the best books , I have ever read :-)

A bit dry and given to too much introspection. It's a shame - the man's had such an interesting life, from what I can gather, and he doesn't seem to be able to tell too much about it apart from some rambling details.
Not an easy read becasue I thought the French to English translation was choppy and sometimes difficult to follow. Nevertheless I enjoyed it. A very different perspective on the 20th century.
