Sadly, Dark Heart Forever is one of those 'the cover is better than the actual prose' novels. I was enchanted by the gorgeous art and really excited to read the book as I've had plot bunnies about a similar idea bouncing round my head for a few years now but sadly I was left feeling very disappointed.

I had a lot of trouble with the narrative because it jumps into the story without a back story at all. I expected some flesh to Luca's storyline (how long had Jane been having these dreams? I was enchanted by the gorgeous art and really excited to read the book as I've had plot bunnies about a similar idea bouncing round my head for a few years now but sadly I was left feeling very disappointed.

I had a lot of trouble with the narrative because it jumps into the story without a back story at all. I expected some flesh to Luca's storyline (how long had Jane been having these dreams? What happened in them?) but there was not really anything at all. Particularly at the beginning of the novel, the narrative just left me confused. Luca started appearing in her real life almost instantly but we never actually saw him visit her in her dreams, so I was confused as to if he was in her real life and no one could see him or if she was in a dream when she saw him.

There was no back story on Jane either, aside from the apparently fundamental 'I'm a freak' trap that so many YA authors fall into. Usually I can somewhat go along with it but I found it startlingly painful to digest in Dark Heart Forever. Jane mentions several times outright that she is a 'freak' and that she was terribly bullied, but aside from the fact that she doesn't dress well, I didn't really see why she would be picked on. However, people do strange things, so perhaps she was bullied simply for being herself, but I felt like the point was overdone. It was typical, overused case of the female lead not being pretty or special, but the male lead still falls in love with her because actually, she is beautiful. This leads me to a gripe I had with Jane: at least twice her "long glossy hair" was mentioned as her redeeming factor. For someone who claims to not care much for her appearance, her vanity is obvious here.

Moving on from Jane, I give a little credit to Lee Monroe; the Evan twist was interesting. Unfortunately, I had already guessed it. I couldn't believe these two boys were suddenly 'in love' with her when she had just met them both and no one had ever liked her before.

Luca was about the only character I liked. He seemed kind and gentle, but brave when it was necessary. Lowe's character was just not well done; he seemed very evil, only to suddenly change his mind at the end. Other characters flitted in and out without much story, investigation or purpose. I firmly believe that every character must serve some kind of purpose if they are important enough to be mentioned several times. The vampires were almost redundant. I wish there had been more support behind all of the characters. They had no depth and seemed almost there to fill a gap.

Just some other little things that bothered me: the scene in which they have lunch. Evan is offered a beer, which he declines, because he is going to teach Jane how to drive. He says that the two he has already drunk are his limit. Firstly, Jane is sixteen, so it's illegal for her to learn how to drive until she is seventeen (I'm assuming the novel is set in England because of the spelling of Mum and the author is English, but I can't actually remember if it is ever mentioned) but her parents are okay with that. Secondly, Evan has already had two beers (drinking while driving, again, illegal, and even if he is under the limit, dangerous) and he is going to teach Jane to drive on a mountainside. They are okay with that, too. In fact, they even find it agreeable, rewarding him a with winning smiles when he says he won't drink another.
It also seemed like Jane used both of the boys when the other wasn't around. She also accepted Luca's world without a second thought, barely questioning it, which did not seem realistic at all.

Frankly, this book feels to me as if it is just another novel designed to fill the Twilight gap, which saddens me greatly. As a devot YA fiction fan (specifically paranormal as well) I'm looking for something different. Something with strong characters, development and something original. I'm aware that it is impossible to go not cover what has already been breeched: wolves, alternate universes, fallen angels ect. but Dark Heart Forever was a real disappointment. I was also sad to see that it was an English author, as I think most YA fiction is published by American authors and a brilliant British paranormal YA series is needed. (less)

I loved this book. I could tell right from the start that there was going to be something seriously wrong with Evan and I actually gasped outloud when I found out he was Raphael. I love Luca he is so cute and you can tell he is in denile about loving Jane. Lowe is horrible but I think he might have a big part to play in the next book? Dalya is the best, i wish i had a sister like her! she's so loyal and caring <3 highly recommend this book!!<3<3

This book was a thorough disappointment. The gorgeous cover was beautiful and enticing (I would DIE for that dress- or at least bedroom walls in that same colour)and the synopsis is equally exciting. I've always loved the ideas of dream worlds, so combining the idea with fantasy creatures and a love triangle sounded like my idea of a dream book.
Advice to fellow readers drawn in by the same reasons as me: This book is nowhere near as good as the cover/synopsis make out.

I guess I set myself up for disappointment, being all besotted with the cover and stuff, but it wasn't just the plot that was bland- Jane has to be one of the dullest characters I've ever come across. I get that the author was probably just trying to make her one of those typical, shy, normal girls, instead of the flashy, kick-ass confident ones, but there's a difference between average teen girls and completely dull ones. Plain Jane does NOT get my vote.
And her 'dream world' wasn't as exciting as I was expecting, either. Okay, so Luca was quite cute, and was definitely my favourite in the love triangle, but he was just the tiniest bit pathetic and dull, too.
I could tell right from the beginning that Evan was a weirdo, and surprise, surprise! I was right. Admittedly, I hadn't figured out HOW he was a creep, and that was quite a cool twist. But it was about the only interesting thing that happened in the book. Sad, but true.
The romance between Luca and Plain Jane took ages to build. Usually, I'm a fan of all that 'getting to know each other before actually falling in love'- well, more of a fan; I can't STAND books where the characters fall in love in the first few chapters. This wasn't one of those, so I'll give it kudos for that, but I still didn't really feel the love between the two was real.
So I'm a fan of well-paced books. I hate ones that rush too much. But this book was pretty flat, and the pace was slower than my grandmas driving (and that's pretty damn slow). The author took forever to build something up, and then that 'something' would turn out flat, and just disappointing.
I'm giving this two stars for two reasons- one, because the twist with Evan was kinda clever. And two, because Luca was quite sweet, and not too stereotypical, albeit a little dull.
So yeah, no thanks for the sequel, but dammit, why do the covers have to be so damn gorgeous??? (less)

Reading the synopsis on the cover, I wanted to immerse myself in the adventures of Jane. It seemed interesting to witness the collision between her dreams and the reality. I also expect a lot of magic or fantasy but I stayed on my hunger. The novel begins slowly and lack of pace.
The reader feel that something interesting will happen, but the author takes her time, maybe too much, to mount the mayonnaise. The clues are there, the agonizing atmosphere starts and poof ... nothing more.

This was a really intriguing and different book. It had paranormal aspects but the whole story had more than just a love triangle and some crazy werewolves/vampires/angels/witches. Jane also experiences vivid dreams, sometimes causing scary sleep-walking. Jane is starting to worry as her mother’s concern increases. When the boy from her dreams finally visits Jane when she is awake, what will happen? Will it be love at first sight? Are they really meant to be together? But is it too late? Has Jane’s heart already been captured by the beautiful and mysterious, Australian runaway, Evan?

At first, I was totally sceptical about this book. I mean, love triangle, one a werewolf, one mysterious? Hasn’t that already been done? Right, anyway. I was rooting for Evan right from the word go! He’s beautiful and Australian! I know how yummy Aussie boys are, trust me. I happen to be Australian too, so yeah, go Evan! But then, we were introduced to Luca; the strange boy, the one she feels as if she already knows. I was a bit unsure of him at first, because, well in Twilight he was the one that got second best. Around the middle part of the book, Evan started acting weird. This was when I totally fell head over heels in love with Luca and his world. He was such a sweetheart. Yes, his world was dangerous and yes, Jane shouldn’t have visited and yes, it was just as dangerous for Luca, but pfft, who cares! Everything would totally work out in the end, right? So yeah, in the end I went for Luca and his good looks and lifestyle, instead of Evan’s creepiness.

The characters in this book were good! At first, Anna, Jane’s mother was a bit of a tight ass and a little weird, but in the end she turned out to be pretty damn awesome! I also loved Jane’s little sister, Dot. It’s probably just the name, because I had a Granny Old Dot, but this character Dot was pretty cute! Dot and Jane had a good strong bond, the kind that only parents dream of their kids having! And even though she was only featured in the book for tiny periods of time, I like Eileen! She seemed pretty cool. Like, a long lost aunt, or something. She seemed to have a motherly instinct for all of the kids that hung around her diner.

Overall, I liked this book. It was overly amazing, or overly bad. It was quite ordinary, actually, but still, I liked this and will probably check the library for the next one.

OK, let us start with the fact how they made a big deal about some curse in the beginning that the author never continued. And something about some girls? I was totally open to love this book, but seriously, don't mention something you're not going to explain.
And then there's the whole I'm-falling-in-love-ridiculously-fast-with-no-development-leading-to-it thing. I think that's all to be said on the matter.

I don't really know what to say about this book, I really don't! I loved it- by the end, but it did take me a long while to get into it. I have wavered at times about whether or not this book is a three star or a four star.

You know, I just didn't buy into this book as much as I thought I would. I really liked it in the beginning, since both Jane and Luca manage to narrowly avoid the stereotypes set forth by the many YA authors that have come before them. I was pleased that, despite Luca's revelation, the author managed to avoid the macho Alpha Male role he could have easily fallen into, and Jane is a moderately interesting protagonist. So why didn't I like it more? Well, to be honest, the storyline is convoluted as hell, and doesn't always make sense. Jane and Luca suffer from the all-too-common InstaLove phenomenon, but then Luca spends the rest of the book insisting they can't be together. (Which would be more believable if he'd stop stalking her, but whatever.) Jane then starts spending time with bad boy Evan, who unfortunately does fit the cliched Alpha Male mold. A love triangle in YA PNR, who would have thought? /sarcasm

Unfortunately, this book will be shelved under DID NOT FINISH. I was halfway through but nothing was really happening. The plot moved in such a snail’s pace that I quit reading before I could figure what this book was about. I hate giving up on books but I have to think about the other ones on my Mt. TBR that are more deserving of my time.

Surprising, quirky little gem with a misleadingly dull blurb. Monroe's Dark Heart Forever had this reviewer denouncing sleep to get to the last page. Main character Jane is the lead you've been waiting for: weirdly wonderful with a fantastic, and authentic, voice. There were laugh-out-loud moments, but the humor was never misused.

I was pretty excited to read Dark Heart Forever and I'm happy to say that the excitement was worth it. At first I thought it was too fast-paced and predictable but as I kept reading I found out that my predictions were completely wrong and the book went on a completely different turn.

Our main character is Jane - for me it was easy to relate to her, maybe because we both have antisocial tendencies... I really did love Jane's relation to her family, her little sister Dot was adorable, her mother...more I was pretty excited to read Dark Heart Forever and I'm happy to say that the excitement was worth it. Our main character is Jane - for me it was easy to relate to her, maybe because we both have antisocial tendencies... I really did love Jane's relation to her family, her little sister Dot was adorable, her mother who's the boss of the family and her kind father. The family relationship was one of my favorite aspects of the book. Luca, our male lead was gentle and sweet - he really couldn't bring himself to hurt anyone or anything. A lot of times in YA books the male leads are emo jerks and it was refreshing that Luca was the complete opposite of that. I loved meeting Luca's family as well (though I just wanted to hit his younger brother Lowe at times!!!) - this book really puts strain on the importance of that.

Jane doesn't end up with whom you think she does right at the beginning - far from it. When you read a book nowadays you can tell almost instantly whom our main character will choose. It wasn't like that in Dark Heart Forever. And honestly I liked both Luca and Evan enough that I didn't care who she ended up with as long as it was one of them. I also enjoyed learning about the world of Nissilum - it's a parallel world to our own and a haven for supernatural creatures that live together in peace. It was an interesting take on our usual paranormal creatures - werewolves, witches, vampires, faeries and angels.

My only problem was that there was one thing that was obvious - I don't really want to spoil what it was though. But besides that Dark Heart Forever is a great take on the supernatural creatures we've read so much about, it's full of romance, and has a twisting plot that will keep your head spinning. Trust me, this is a book that any YA paranormal lover will not want to miss! (less)

DARK HEART RISING has been on my reading list for months and after getting through my list I finally reached DHF and it was well worth it.

My only compliant was that the start of the DHF was a tad bit slow but it picked up from about Chapter 3.

Hmmm. Where to start.

Well its your usual story about a girl who has to choose between two guys and navigate a strange new world, which for the most part is nothing original. The characters are incredibly underdeveloped, and the plot far more so. It felt rushed, and the developments by the end were hard to stomach.

OK, this book was not what I expected, but I mean this in a good way.
It totally deserves 3 1/2 stars, it is a little short of 4 stars.

Jane is a tomboy, who has had it rough. So rough that on account of a girl, Sarah, bullying her, she has been homeschooled for the past year.

CRAP. This book brought me to tears, especially in the end. So, Evan Forest [the real one] was strangled by Raphael [a wolf, who was Gabriel's son (Anna's teenage fling)]. Raphael thought his father died/disappeared because of Anna, who was Jane's mother. He did his revenge by pretending he liked Jane and something something. I can't explain everything. Through the use of descriptive language to create emotional imagery, the reader is taken into the world of Jane Jonas. When she meets Evan, gorgeus, gentle, funny, and irrisistibly charming, Jane attempts to convince herself that he is the right one for her and exactly what she has been wanting her whole life through, but his occasional mood swings reveal to Jane a darker side to what she had imagined. A part of him leads her astray, and she realises that he isn't what he appears to be.

When we meet Evan he seems to be the all round boy next door with a slight mystery about him, but from the start he seemed a tad bit off for me. He has a lot of baggage and has a hidden agenda for the things he does and says. Luca on the other hand is very sensitive and the way Lee describes his moss green eyes leaves me begging for more. Luca has his own issues to work through but is able to do so before things take a turn for the worst. He makes a dramatic change in my opinion and is able to be the man that his sister Dayla and Jane see in him.

Luca. Olive skinned. Tanned. Emerald green eyes. Mysterious. Quiet. Without realising, Jane feels extremely bound to him, like a force keeps pulling her towards him and his world of Nessilum, where vampires, witches, angels, demons..and werewolves all exist.

Jane finds herself torn between two worlds, finding a part of her lost when Luca doesnt appear for a long period of time, She must decide what she truly wants.
Jane is left with two choices. But when she realises that her family is in extreme danger, she uncovers the true Evan, Raphael, who seeks vengeance for his fathers disappearance and death, believed to be the consequences of a broken heart.
Luca, "But what i feel for you is far too much to let you go." He kissed me quickly and firmly on the mouth, causing sparks to dance around my heart. "I can wait", I said, hoping that I really could. That time and practicality and other people wouldn't get in the way. "I will wait".(less)

I’m not quite sure what to say about this book, I liked it but it didn’t blow me away. It reminded me a lot of other young adult paranormal books out there. There were a few original points in the book but not any that I would say that you would HAVE to read it now. The book started off a little slow but halfway through it started to pick up and I started enjoying it.
The characters were much the same as a lot of YA books out. Jane was different and kept to herself. She was bullied in school so...more

Dark Heart Forever is now my second favorite werewolf book.I usually don't bother to read books about werewolves but this book seemed intriguing.Indeed I was surprised that ended up liking many of the characters.Dayla, who is Luca's sister was certainly one of my favorite girl characters.I adored how she would do anything in her power to help out her brother,Luca.Next,Luca was so charming and sweet.Jane's sister Dot was also an adorable character.One of the most interesting aspects of Dark Heart...more
