Ruffian's tragic story still has a powerful hold over horse racing enthusiasts. The big, almost-black filly so dominated her peers that none could get near her on the racetrack. Then came the fateful match against Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure--the race in which she lost her life.

This would be a great book for anyone not familiar with Ruffian's story, or someone interested in the facts but not all the details. Toby does an excellent job of providing the right amount of detail--not too much, not too little. His love for his subject is very clear.

Ruffian's tale never stops tugging at your heartstrings, no matter how many times you read about it. Arguably the greatest filly ever to set foot on an American racetrack, there's no telling what she might have accomplished if her

Sorry Wendy. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood but. . . Blah blah. . . blah, blah, blah!

This is a great intro book on Ruffian, giving you a nice overview of her career and short life. Even if you've heard of Ruffian or seen her tragic match race, this filly definitely wasn't her final race. There aren't enough superlatives to really describe her accurately, but Lucien Laurin, trainer of Secretariat, is quoted as saying she might have even been better than him. Check out some of her races on YouTube - she was a beast of a filly.

While a slim volume at just over 140 pages, including

The almost black filly, often mistaken for a stallion, was one of the tracks greatest filly's arguable in the history of the sport.
Often carrying top weight, she out ran her competition by lengths.
Then in a match race male against female , with Foolish pleasure, an injury took her life.
As a result of Ruffians tragic loss, no more match races were held.
She was the first horse to be buried at the Belmont Race track and had a race named after her.
Her legend will remain forever.

A good short version of Ruffian's story (compared to the longer "Ruffian: Burning from the Start"). Takes information directly from news articles and racing forms. Not too many tangents, and also a comfortable writing style. Not awkward like some others in the series.
