Patterson is back on track with this addition to the Alex Cross series. Detective-turned-FBI-Agent Cross is drawn in a suspected case of a female serial killer which is unique. Each of the victims is tied to the movie industry. Besides leaving trademark stickers with the letters A or B on them, Mary Smith also emails a Los Angeles Times entertainment writer a letter to the victim describing how the gruesome crime was committed.

Alex's family life seems to be imploding as Christine Joh More...

Mary Mary by James Patterson

In the world James Patterson has created there is action, a very small bit of romance, and crazy people that suck you in so fast that you’ll be finished with the book and not even know it. The setting is mostly in Washington D.C and is about Alex Cross, a retired cop, who is also know as the dragon slayer because of all the criminals he has put away More...

In this 11th Alex Cross book, James Patterson is back and better than ever! We jump right in from the first chapter with The Storyteller laying plans out right away. And boy, it starts with a bang - a BIG bang! I was immediately hooked and could not put the book down. I read this in one day.

The storyline moves fast - "Mary Smith" is killing A-List Hollywood mothers and bragging about it via emails to a reporter at the LA Times. Although Cross is on vacation with his family, More...

This was my first James Patterson read; I've always seen his books in bookstores and know a little about him as a thriller author, but until now I'd never read any of his books. I realized after I picked up the book that it was late in the Alex Cross series, but after reading it, I can honestly say I didn't need to read the other books in the series to get the story.

Even the background information on Alex Cross peppered throughout the book wasn't hard for me to pick up on, assimilat More...

At last Patterson is back after his average "Big Bad Wolf" and awful "London Bridges", and at his best. It's no secret I hated "London Bridges" and had that been the first Patterson book I read I would have never have picked up another. Thankfully I like to read a series in order...lol However, Alex Cross' 11th instalment was a page-turner I thoroughly enjoyed.

"Mary Mary" begins with the Storyteller and I love the way Patterson hooks you fro More...

Mary, Mary by James Patterson (pp. 448)

When reviewing another installment of the Alex Cross detective series there isn’t much to review. Each book has the exact same formula. One can only rate the creativity of murder scenes and the serial killer’s motive and get everything there is to know about the book.

In the 11th installment, Cross gets embroiled in a string of high-profile celebrity murders while on vacation with his family in Disneyland. The serial killer fas More...

A few flaws, but most will enjoy Patterson's latest Dr. Alex Cross thriller!

We're a longtime Patterson reader and definitely prefer his solo-authored series featuring Alex Cross, now a top FBI specialist, to most of his collaborations with other writers in which presumably our famous author doesn't have time to do more than sketch out the plot. "Mary" has the thrills and chills we've come to expect from Patteron's better novels: a compelling plot, where we get to follow the More...

Tapi beruntungklah Cross karena James More...

James Patterson- Mary Mary (Warner Books 2006) 3.5 Stars

Mary Smith is killing Hollywood’s best movie stars and leaving emails for a columnist at the Los Angeles Times. Torn from his family vacation, Alex Cross is sent to assist local authorities in their investigation. As the killings pile up Cross is dragged further into case, butting heads with LAPD’s finest. The police are in a hurry to close the case, but Cross wants to make sure that they capture the right killer. At the same ti More...

This was the Branigan BookClub book for March 2006.

As all of Patterson's books are, this one is very cinematic. If you like short chapters, then his writing is for you. If not, then not.

This is the (yes!) 11th Alex Cross novel. FBI agent Cross is on vacation with his family at Disneyland when the Director calls and asks him to drop vacation and join a local taskforce investigating the high profile murder of a movie star in neighboring Beverly Hills. Then an editor at the More...

First thoughts: Well, I wanted to take a short break from the teen market and decided that a little thriller would be the way forward. I had always wanted to read a James Patterson novel and after researching his books this one appealed most to me!

Setting: The setting takes place in Hollywood, California. It also goes back and forth from Washington D.C. In the last few chapters it takes place in Vermont. All setting were well described and very appealin More...

It was my first James Patterson book & I must say I was overblown by the writing & ofcourse the story which hooked me up so much that I finished this book within 2 days.

Really, I was searching for this kind of story & I found that in James Patterson. The story what should I say, Alex Cross the FBI Psychologist pressure from his department & deeply sad about his child Alex who was with his wife. I must say James really make me feel about Alex & yes how can I forget about Mary. Oh My More...

Ok, usually I hate James Patterson. Like I can't stand how linear and obvious his writing is. BUT. This was actually really interesting. I could care less about Alex Cross. Whatever. The CRIME and the MURDERER. That's where it's at. First of all, the idea of the crime and all the stuff surrounding it and the circumstances that made it happen is amazing. I'm not gonna give things away, but it made me think, which is what mysteries and thrillers are supposed to do. And also, I liked how I wasn't b More...

Clearly another of Pattersons jewels. It was hard to put down and easy to read. He does such short chapters, that if you need to stop, it is easy to get back to. He writes about gruesome murders and this is no exception, but truly keeps you trying to figure out the who and why.

A serial killer is stalking, murdering, and mutilating some major Hollywood movers and shakers. One of the victims happened to be a personal friend of the nation's president. This friendship brings in immediate FBI involvement and they call on their best person for the job; Alex Cross.

Between potential romances, family issues, red tape, and a massing body count, Dr. Cross races with time to solve the mystery.

I enjoyed the mystery. It kept me guessing until it was finall More...

This was only the second James Patterson book I had read and the setting (Hollywood) intrigued me. Despite it being "an Alex Cross" book and having never read a book with Mr. Cross as the central character, I had no problem following along. Yes, there is some history mentioned, but it's easy enough to pick up on and isn't central to the main story. The main story, about a serial killer preying on Hollywood/movie industry businesswomen with children is entertaining and keep you interest More...

Oh James Patterson, authorial crush of my youth. I thought you could do no wrong!
And, for entertainment purposes, he really can't. Patterson consistently hits out best-sellers because he gets the tropes that work and the characters that don't. I admire this. It does, however, makes his books...familiar.
This one, however, did throw me a curve ball that I didn't remember from reading this in high school. I really like the last 100 pages or so, as they were not what I was expecting. More...

Found this book on my bookshelf after we move to a new place a couple months ago. This book was my brother's, which he got from his former boss' house, a French guy whom he helped preparing to return to France. He took a few books from him, one of those was this Mary, Mary book.

I've read some books by James Patterson, and somehow I become a fan of him. He writes his novel in short chapters, but the flow of the story is very interesting you can't let go of the book.

This book was slightly disturbing at some parts, it just makes me think that this wouldn't happen in real life. At least not that i've heard of. I do really like the plot of this book, and I love the characters. One thing about the Alex Cross books that I don't like is that Alex seems to have a new girlfriend in every book. And most of the time they end up betraying him in some way. I understand the need to be dramatic in a murder mystery, but some things that happen are a little too hard to bel More...

I just finished badmouthing some of Patterson's books saying as how they were pointless and boring. then along comes "Mary, Mary" which may be his best since "Jack & Jill". Patterson doesn't try to create the next supervillain (a la Kyle Craig), but instead writes about your down to earth, everyday, crazy pyschopath who has an agenda and basically sticks to it. Then, you have Alex Cross who simply does his job, and follows the killer's trail (with all of its twists and turns) More...

I picked this out of a box here in Iraq of books that had been sent from a publishing company. On the back there's this sticker that says "Gift from James Patterson," so I would like to start my review by thanking Mr. Patterson for his care package and the copy which I will probably now pass along to someone else.

Although I have developed his sense of gratitude and fondness for Mr. Patterson, I must say that this book was very average. A typical mystery thriller with roma More...

I thought that I really, really liked Patterson's writing, but maybe I just like it "okay" and I got lucky with the first couple of his books that I read.

The story is just fine, I like the characters. I'm not a fan of cutting up a book as this was - there are two point-of-view narratives, and the main narrative.

I skipped over the domestic legalities. When Patterson tries to write feelings, Alex Cross comes across as sappy - and sometimes just a sap. It almost More...

A classic Patterson mystery with a healthy dose of family drama on the side. Readers are not only drawn to the story of Mary Smith, but to Alex Cross and his family, too. This may be a murder mystery, but it still conveys a fuzzy message about the importance of family.

One of the most interesting things about Patterson as a writer is his eerie ability to portray a killer’s mind. Mary Smith feels real. Her psychosis feels real. Patterson’s connection to the dark side of the human ps More...

You know what you're getting with James Patterson: Short chapters, lots of cliffhangers, a good read... and yet, in the end, not something that's wildly satisfying. In this case, the resolution not only comes out of left field but is completely undeveloped. At no point do they go back and give you the step-by-step explanation of "how, what, when, where and why" that is crucial to crime novels. But Patterson's fans probably won't care too much about that. They seem not to be interested More...

I picked this up thinking it was #1 in the Alex Cross series (I saw the commercial for the newest Alex Cross and since I don't usually see commercials for books, I thought hmmm). Anyway. Apparently this is #13 or something ridiculous like that. Not very well written with lots of flat lines, the mystery part of the book was at least entertaining. I read it on a snow day when we were stuck in the house. I'm still going to try to find Alex Cross #1...just to see if there's a little more life in More...

For the most part I have enjoyed this whole series so far, Mary Mary was a bit softer when it comes to intricacy and tight action but I liked reading it and it's pretty fast and easy to get through, Patterson's chapters are getting shorter and shorter. Keeping a long running series fresh is a challenge and this had some up and downs, I enjoyed reading about Alex and his family more than his career which is always the one thing that keeps getting him in dangerous situations.
