Summary: Similar to the song, If You're Happy and You Know It. Follows animals with if you're hoppy, sloppy, growly, flappy, slimy and scaly, and mean. Good to use with kids as it encourages them to think about other animals that might be hoppy, sloppy, etc. The pictures clues work to help the kids read along and shout out the answers.

I did try reading this to my kids at home and had them stand up to do movements with it, as it starts out as hoppy like a frog. However, the way the text shifts t...more

Team up April Pulley Sayre and Jackie Urbanovic and you're certain to have a hit on your hands. The hit just happens to be a new take on the popular children's song, "If you're happy and you know it."

In If You're Hoppy, Sayre runs us through a variety of 'animal' acts...

"If you're hoppy and you know it, you're...a frog." Or "If you're growly and you know it, you're a dog. Or a bear. OR—A TUMMY, OVER THERE!"

This is such a fun read, you'll find yourself bursting into song and singing it in your he...more

If you aren't happy prior to reading this, you will be after! Read (or sung) to the old tune "If You're Happy and You Know It," this book explores different actions and different animals associated with those actions. This would be the perfect storytime book as the kids could move right along with the story. It could also be turned into a critical thinking activity as they try to come up with other animals associated with those actions. The story doesn't match the song verbatim so there will hav...more

This is a fun action filled book for kids that love animals and being goofy. The text takes the well-known song "If You're Happy and You Know It" and transforms it into a romp with rabbit, frog, bear, lion, butterfly and many other animals. It's especially fun to practice the different actions (hopping, growling, flapping and more) and think of other animals that do each of these things. Singing along is a must as you a pulled along by the exuberant, colorful illustrations. Perfect for reading/s...more

At first something about this picture book got to me and not in a good way. It just didn’t seem to flow right while I read it in my head.

Creative? Yes. Fun? Yes. Get stuck in your head? Yes.Yes. Yes.

I can’t stop singing “If You’re Hoppy ..” in my head and it is not annoying. I am enjoying reminiscing about the new words to the original musical tune. I am enjoying the fun, heart felt joy of the book.

I think children will enjoy this spring time, anytime book read in that similar tune. *goes off hu...more

Definitely fun. And a bit silly. Those are always a good combination. As a lap-read, this would be a great one to sing-along with your child. Just be prepared that some parts won't match entirely with the song we're familiar with. Still, it works quite well when you're ready for the differences. As a storytime, it would never work to sing it unless you have 5 or less in the group and they're okay with slight pauses so you can turn pages. Any group larger and you would totally lose the fun in the...more

A must for movement (or just for fun) storytime, this book is loosely sung to the tune of "If You're Happy and You Know It"...although a bit of improv will be required for parts that don't exactly line up. Illustrations are bright and attractive---with a frog practically leaping off the page and a bear that fills a full page spread. These illustrations and the quirky little song will translate enjoyably for a preschool audience.

The eternal preschool tune “If You’re Happy and You Know It” is transformed into a song about the qualities, sounds, and movements of various animals.

This would make a nice read-aloud book if you’re entertaining a group of youngsters, but unlike many other picture books, there’s nothing here anyone over the age of 5 can really enjoy.

This is a fun twist on the popular song ... "If you're hoppy and you know it you're a frog. Or a bunny! Or a cricket!" Many other animals join in the party, showing off their behaviors like sloppy and growly. The illustrations fill the pages and are bright, cheerful and colorful. It's very fun and silly and rhythmic-great for storytime! -AM

Reminiscent of the cheerful children's song, "If You're Happy and You Know It," this happy picture book inspires a grin on every page. If you're hoppy and you know it, you're a frog. If you're sloppy and you know it, you're a hog. Illustrated with marvelous splashy watercolors by Jackie Urbanovic, of Max the Duck fame. Ages 2-5.

This book is good for teaching following directions and talking about action words and different things that different animals do. I didn't like the part about "if you're mean, scary. . ." b/c it made my son a little nervous, and they never mentioned what the thing was! It just said, "Nevermind." That was annoying to me.

I enjoy April Pulley Sayre's books and how she often plays with songs and chants. This is a cute play on If you're happy and you know it, but it teaches about animal movements too. Great for fluency, word choice, rhyme and more for our little readers.
Gwen the Librarian
Perfect for storytime, Sayre plays around with the familiar song "If You're Happy and You Know It" not only by adding animal actions, but also by showing that more than one animal can do an action. For example, bunnies hop, but so do frogs and crickets.

This book goes to the tune, "if you're happy and you know it." This is such a fun book, because you can have kids do the moves as you read the story. (ex: hopping and growling)Perfect book during a rainy day to get kids active inside.
Stefani
Cute adaptation, and the illustrations are hilarious. For group settings, you'd have to really get into it because the rhythm is often interrupted. Still, the story (and even learning a bit about different animals) is a fun time.
Samantha
Great storytime read! Written to the tune of "If You're Happy and You Know It" this story is silly, includes lots of animals depicted in big, bright illustrations and begs an audience to follow along making sounds and actions!
Kim Patton
Colorful illustrations bring this rhyming text to life. Based on the song If You're Happy and You Know It, the book takes different animal actions and goes through what animals could be doing similar things.

I looked at this book and thought, this would be hard to read out loud. Then I tried it. I was wrong! It was great to sing out loud. I think that the story time kids will love this one! Can't wait to try it!

I envision this as a big hit in a preschool read-aloud, but it wasn't for me. The art is lovely, but despite reading it aloud a few times, I couldn't get the rhythm right.
Mari
This one is fun and silly, just what I like in a storytime sing-along book. I did need to practice it a time or two to make sure I could fit the words with the tune.
Sam Bloom
This is definitely one of Sayre's less inspired titles, but still a whole lot of fun. It doesn't hurt to have Jackie Urbanovic's illustrations as accompaniment!
Courtney
This book would be great for a preschool storytime. There are the animals everyone knows, but also lesser known ones to build vocabulary. The illustrations are bright and large enough to share with a large group.
Sandybear76
The preschoolers today had lots of giggles with this one today. All the hopping and growling and all the animals. Yup, definite hit.
Susan Erhardt
I thought this was cute, though when I read it at preschool storytime the kids seemed pretty lukewarm about it.

Great sing-along storybook with an action-packed twist to the traditional song "If You're Happy and You Know It"

If You're Hoppy and you know it, you're a frog...
or a bunny...
or a kangaroo...

Such an adorable book!

A new twist to an old favorite wonderfully illustrated that will delight the preK set. Get up and get hoppy!!
Rachel
Great play on old song, shows animal connections in their abilities. Very vibrant and fun.
Lisa Michaud
Trust the rhythm and sing it. Any nearby children will play along, promise.
