This book serves as a nice companion to The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons, but not as a substitute, unless you are solely interested in Powell's Diary of the First Trip Through the Grand Canyon. John Wesley Powell's diary of his first trip down the Colorado river is an interesting piece of writing that details not only the hardships of exploration but also the breathtaking scenery he encountered. I think my favourite bits were his encounters with various ruined cliff-dwellings (which today are known to be Anasazi) and his speculation as to who had lived there & what had happened to them. This isn't the sort of thing I usually read, but I enjoyed it, especially in this edition which...more
The writing was great, but the photos were not very impactful. I think nature photography has come a long way since '69.
Powell was incredibly arrogant but his contributions are not to be denies. I wrote my history thesis on his journey down the Grand Canyon.
