I'm torn with the rating I gave this book. It deserves more then three stars but I wouldn't say I 'really liked it'. So, even though I like this book more than I like it's companion, The Forest of Hands and Teeth, I gave it the same amount of stars.

Gabry, the main character of this story, is lacking in the crazy-ass psycho department that her mother so nicely managed during her debut in The Forest of Hands and Teeth.

This story is about self-discovery. With Zombies.

Which actually makes a lot of sense.

In what I can only assume is stupidity gone rampant amongst teens, Gabry is convinced to go out past their safe border and into a closed and derelict theme park.

I wasn't a fan of The Forest of Hands and Teeth, but I wanted to give the author a second chance.

Like the previous book, the writing is choppy, monotonous, and repetitive. The same thoughts and sentences are strewn throughout the pages. The author uses silly similes, instead of actually describing things. I grew weary of hearing how everything was like something else. Anyway, Gabry has a very different upbringing from her mother. She lives in a lighthouse on the outskirts of a little town called Vista. She has a best friend and a crush on her best friend's brother. But most of all, she grows up safe and secure, without all that moaning in the background. But then, of course, it all goes wrong......dun dun DUN. Gabry and her friends take a little midnight hike over the Barrier and zombie hell breaks loose. The night ends with death, betrayals, and with half of her generation gone or imprisoned, life will never be the same for poor, sweet Gabry.

I have to say, this was a hell of a sequel. I thought it was actually much better than The Forest of Hands and Teeth aaaaaand all my questions were answered (well, about 88%). There were even some guest appearances and moments when I felt smarter than the narrator because I knew what something was and she didn't. What more can I gall ask for?

The writing was very much the same. It was beautiful in places, mostly sad, but hope shined through. I managed to read this in a period of 24 hours, which is no small feat when you have school and homework and yada yada yada. My point is that it's compelling and unputdownable (which is officially a word).

The world that Ryan sets up is just incredible, honestly. I find it completely convincing. It's mysterious and dark and scary. Just normal life with fewer good parts....and it has zombies.

I found Gabry more likable than her predecessor, but I don't feel fair comparing the two because they have totally different personalities.

Once again, the weakest part for me was the love triangle. I'm sick of those things. I always choose the wrong guy, then have a grudge against the author for having different taste in men. But this time I think I routing for the right guy.....I think. I have to wait and see if he dies first. Even though Gabry bounced back and forth between the two contestants, she never seemed ho-ish. Just confused.

But once again I could never tell if the couple was kissing. Does that make me weird, or does anyone else have that problem with these books? I don't know, there would be pages of getting close and comfy with one of her man-friends then they would get pissed or something, storm off, and Gabry would try to relive their "almost-kiss". And I would be like "Man, I though for SURE they were lipsmacking that time!"

Overall, I really liked this book. And if you want this book to be a stand-alone, go ahead. This book could do well without it's predecessor, although it's cliffhanger ending may be too much for someone with poor will power (aka me). I recommend this book to everyone, except those who like fairy-tale endings, "perfect" narrators, or can't handle flesh-eating corpses.

Dead Tossed Waves is a great example where the sequel outshines the first installment… by far! I had no intention of reading this book as The Forrest of Hands and Teeth was a disappointment for me at least. I really enjoyed this story so much more than the first book, as I feel Carrie Ryan truly displayed growth in her writing abilities, as evidence by the captivating plot she devised, the flawed yet appealing characters she developed, and the intriguing setting she used as a backdrop. It all blended very well and kept me riveted the entire time.

I liked all of the characters that made up this adventure including Gabry, Catcher, Cira, and Elias, who I felt were strong, complex players in this story that kept the action going at a steady pace. It was interesting to learn about the Soulers and the additional back-story of the Return. The action was continuous, but I never felt it was too drawn out. Overall, this book delivered in areas I felt The Forrest of Hands and Teeth didn't.

I'm removing one star for some insignificant details that really didn't distract me too much, but I wish could have either been eliminated, downplayed or explained. One, I would have liked to see Gabry not go back and forth so much between her feelings for Catcher and Elias, but considering the gamut of emotions and struggle for survival, I guess I can understand the confusion that naturally set in. I'm still curious as to what caused the virus and where it started. We did receive more back-story, but I still have some questions. My other question is why did Catcher get bit in the first place if the Mudos didn't sense his presence since he was immune to the virus? That confused me a bit, but not enough to detract from what was happening in the book.

Other than that, though, it was a great story! I definitely won't hesitate to read other books by this author in the future.(less)

I had some real issues with The Forest of Hands and Teeth mostly revolving around my extreme dislike of the main character. Usually disliking a main character is a deal-breaker for me and it is lucky for me to even finish the book let alone read a sequel. Bum, prásk, tresk, a zrazu... Epilóg. WTF? Keď sa trošku oklepem, možno aj otvorím word, pozliepam moje rozutekané myšlienky, vytrasiem ruky (aby sa mi neklepali), a napíšem "recenziu" (rozumej chválospev, do-neba-velebenie,...).
Prečo nemá Goodreads aj šiestu hviezdičku? Päť je málo, okrem toho slovíčka - it was amazing - sú hlboká urážka tejto knihy. Na toto slová neexistujú. Jedna z mojich najlepších, ak nie tá ÚPLNE najlepšia kniha roku 2011. Fú... No, idem sa spamätávať.

I was surprised to find that this book didn't take off where the first one left off. Instead, we're treated to a larger world than just the Forest of Hands and Teeth, one where humanity is surviving a little less desperately than Mary's villages. In this book, we get to know Mary's daughter Gabry, who has grown up in the relative safety of an ocean village, the Unconsecrated a danger they are warned about but never seem to encounter. Well, that was a thrilling 24 hours of my life. It's hard to review this book without giving away every single thing that was really nifty about it... so I won't do that. What I will talk about is impressions that I had that I really want to remember for next year when the third book comes out. And go.

Well, that was a thrilling 24 hours of my life. It's hard to review this book without giving away every single thing that was really nifty about it... so I won't do that. What I will talk about is impressions that I had that I really want to remember for next year when the third book comes out. And go.

First off... the book is not about Mary at all, so get that out of your head. This books is about Mary's daughter, Gabrielle, who was raised in the seaside barricade of Vista where MAry washed up at the end of book one. And she is very much NOT her mother. She lacks her mother's strength and determination of will, her quickening of spirit, her constant faith and curiousity of all the "what ifs?" of the world. Gabry is very much not Mary... so readers and fans have to readjust their thinking to get around this. There's a bit in the book where Mary told her she wanted her to be safe, to grow up safe...but between the barricaded walls of Vista, the constant patrolling, the Recruitors coming to and fro and other such safeguards Gabry not only grows up safe but far too naive and innocent. Is this a flaw? Certainly not...it's just the first thing you have to realize in reading this book. You are NOT reading about strongwilled Mary... you are reading about quiet and fallible Gabry. It's not a bad thing, but if you want to glean some enjoyment out of the very beginning of the book it's best to remember that mantra.

It's also interesting to note that while Ryan does go into how the world reacted when the world became infected she still does not explain how it happened. No one knows how it happened. And for a large period of time there has not been anyone brave or rational enough to seek out the answers...having a horde of Unconsecrated to fight against will also damper the pursuit of truth and knowledge.

This still remains one of the greatest mysteries of this series... how did this happen? Does Ryan even need to explain it? Will that stop me from reading a sequel? Certainly not... Ryan has just cracked open a whole 'nother dimension with the Recruitors and the Soulers and the ominous sounding Dark City... praytell, what are these mysteries of which I speak? Read the book yourself... it's not perfect, but it's not far off. 4 & 1/2 stars and a very satisfied reader. I'll never look at yellow school buses or bridges over ravines the same way again. (less)

Gabrielle je dcéra strážkyne majáka. Ich povinnosťou je každý deň obchádzať pláž a zabíjať Mudov (Znesvätených), ktorých z mora vyplaví príliv. V skratke, Pobrežie hrôzy má VŠETKO, čo by mala dobrá kniha mať:
- SPÁD. Od začiatku až do konca, kapitolu za kapitolou, neustále sa niečo deje. Raz začnete - nemožné sa odtrhnúť.
- DOBRE NAPÍSANÉ POSTAVY. Výborné, prepracované, s ľudskými chybami a slabosťami. Čo viac povedať.
- DOBRE NAPÍSANÚ HLAVNÚ HRDINKU. Gabry nie je Mary (hoci aj tá sa v príbehu vo vedľajšej úlohe mihne). Je hlbšia, otvorenejšia, pochopiteľnejšia.
- DOBRE NAPÍSANÉ VZŤAHY. V tomto prípade najmä tie romantické. Viete, že sa v knihe sformuje dokonca akýsi ľúbostný trojuholník? Netreba mať obavy, postavy konajú tak, že vám to ani na um nezíde.
- SKVELÝ ŠTÝL. Carrie Ryan sa v Lese kostí potrebovala vypísať, teraz prichádza to pravé orechové. To, ako miestami opisuje situácie a myšlienky postáv je dokonalé. Napínavé v akcií, srdcervúce v dráme... beriem späť všetky výčitky, ktorými som ju pri Lese kostí zahrnula, tá ženská JE spisovateľka.
- ATMOSFÉRU. Už to nie je to mrazenie zo smrti číhajúcej za plotom. Kniha je prevažne akčná, no keď si treba zaplávať v mori plnom mŕtvol, zamrazí vás aj tak.
- MYŠLIENKU. Čo je to smrť? Čo je to život?
- ZVRATY. Och, moje srdce. Nasmerujte pohľad nižšie.
- FANTÁZIU. Niektoré scény, ktoré si Carrie pripravila, sú až neuveriteľné.

- REALITU.
Život nie je kniha. Pozrite sa na svoju poličku a spočítajte si, koľko dobrodružstiev hrdinovia prekonali, a koľko z nich skončilo až neuveriteľne šťastne. Zvykli sme si čítať príbehy, kde dobro zvíťazí nad zlom. A potom vezmeme do rúk niečo od Carrie Ryan a sme šokovaní. Zombie. Nákaza. Umieranie. Že sú naši hrdinovia hlavní hrdinovia im ešte nedáva výsadu, že svoje dobrodružstvo prežijú. Kedy naposledy ste sa báli, či sa hrdinovia konca knihy vôbec dožijú? Pri Pobreží hrôzy sa bojíte neprestajne. Nič nie je isté. Zo strany na stranu sa na scéne môže objaviť zombie-Mudo, raz si zahryznúť, a je koniec. A verte, že sa to stáva.

Čo viac dodať? Prvých 160 strán som zvalila na jeden záťah, pokračovala som asi ďalšími 100, potom som si uvedomila, že nechcem knihu čítať, lebo je až príliš dobrá, ďalších 100 sa mi minulo ani neviem ako a pri posledných 100 to bola šialená "nechtoprežijúnechtoprežijú,-to-by-autorka-predsa-neurobila" jazda. Trasiem sa na záverečný diel, ktorý zase sleduje udalosti z uhla pohľadu inej postavy... a dúfam, že ho aspoň jeden z hrdinov prežije. Epic win shelf.

Knihofilská poznámka na záver - slovenské vydanie je perfektné. Pevná väzba nemá papierový prebal, okraje strán sú nastriekané na zeleno, má výborný malý formát (oh, ako ja nemám rada veľké bichle!), a preklad sa číta ako po masle. Ak zvažujete medzi slovenskou a anglickou, prípadne českou verziou... neváhajte a chmatnite slovenskú.(less)

I’m not particularly into zombie stories. So why did I read it? Well, when I bought the first book I didn’t realise it was about zombies, and I like to see things through to the end.

Ryan’s writing is decent – better than a lot of other writers out there, believe me – but I wasn’t gripped at all through this novel. The first half was very slow. The second half got better and I got a little invested in the characters. The climax was pretty original as far as I’m aware, and it unfolded like a movie...more

The Dead-Tossed Waves isn't really a sequel to The Forest of Hands of Teeth but more of a companion novel. Still has some of the same characters as The Forest of Hands and Teeth, still set in the same world, but it's a few years later and it follows Gabry, the daughter of Mary who was the main character in The Forest of Hands and Teeth.

Gabry, Mary's daughter, fears life and love. She seems to blame herself for everything that happens, including the poor choices of the other characters. I have not read so much whining and self-loathing since Bella Swan.

This companion to The Forest of Hands and Teeth didn't advance the story of life after the Return and left little hope for the characters' futures.

Still, Carrie Ryan's writing is beautiful with moments of tenderness, longing, and tragedy.

Wow. You never think that a sequel will equal its predecessor, but Carrie Ryan has managed to do it...and I even liked it better. The Forest of Hands and Teeth blew me away with its creative setting and premise and with its strong female lead, but when I got hold of The Dead-Tossed Waves I could NOT put it down. I had mixed feelings upon finishing the Forest of Hands and Teeth. I loved the world building, the mythos and the plot, but had trouble liking the protagonist. But I did enjoy the book overall and had no hesitation ordering the second novel in the series.

Okay, zombies? I think they're fabulous. Really. I'm totally Team Zombie, (except when I'm Team Unicorn, but that very rarely occurs!) Still, I have a VERY hard time reading about them. Really. I'm totally Team Zombie, (except when I'm Team Unicorn, but that very rarely occurs!) Still, I have a VERY hard time reading about them. I mean, zombie stories that don't involve too many snapping tendons and crunching bones I can handle. But a zombie story with all that and love? Not gonna happen. At least, that's what I thought before reading Carrie Ryan's books. How does she do it? How can she tell such a beautiful, elegant, touching story with descriptive, bile inducing zombie scenes and make it all work together? Genius I say, genius!
The Dead-Tossed Waves is a companion to Ryan's first novel The Forest of Hands and Teeth. It picks up years down the road and focuses on the next generation. We meet Gabry who is quite possibly one of my favorite characters ever. She has spent her whole life behind the Barrier where she is safe from the Mudo (those would be the zombies!) One night sets Gabry's world on end. Everything she has known and hoped for is changed. I love that, although Gabry lives in a very different world than ours, teens (and adults!) will be able to relate to her and the situations she finds herself in. Okay, maybe not the zombies themselves but you get the idea...
Gabry is scared. She doesn't know what the future holds. She's not certain who she is. Really, she's not certain about anyone. She's realizing that things aren't always what they seem. There are big decisions that come up in her life. She has to make choices she doesn't feel prepared to make. Basically, she's growing up.
What I love most about Gabry is that she keeps on going. No matter what happens Gabry realizes that she has to find the strength to go on. She takes the hurts, joys, successes, failures, grows from them, and moves on. When it comes down to it, Gabry chooses... Gabry. She does what is best for her in order to be true to who she is. Thankfully she is a loyal, giving person so that isn't as selfish as it might sound.
As far as the boys go, can I just say THANK YOU Carrie Ryan for creating Elias. He makes my heart happy. I'm not going to go in to the love triangle situation because Carrie Ryan does it so much better here. Let me just say this, it is SO well done!
I could go on and on about how much I love this book but this review is already longer than I anticipated and I just so happen to have an ARC of the next book The Dark and Hollow Places. So yeah, I'm going to read now :)
**NOTE: I listened to 4/5 of this book on CD. It is a really wonderful audiobook. I highly recommend it!**(less)

Again, I wasn't all that impressed with the cover art but I was expecting a lot from this continues series and CR didn't disappoint all that much. However, I was thrown for a loop when I noticed the narrator change. I find it interesting that she chose a generational gap to move the story forward and can't wait to find out who's P.O.V book three will be in.

El libro empieza con un habiente rapido,las cosas al principio suceden con mucha rapidez que apenas te dan tiempo para asimilar las cosas...pero despues de los primeros capitulos la historia se calma y te da tiempo para pensar. Como es de adivinar este libro no es de comedia ni de color ROSA, no, para nada, Mary en poco tiempo se queda sola y solo tiene a su alrededor a las mujeres de la hermandad, de las cuales no confia nada ya que esconden oscuros, muuy oscuros secretos.

Un dia normal el pueblo de Mary es atacado y ella, su familia y unos cuantos amigos son obligados a huir. Perro ellos tienen miedo ya que no tienen a ningun lado al que ir, ya que como ellos fueron educados, como siempre les dijeron, su aldea era la unica restante, ellos eran los unicos seres humanos que habitaban la tierra, ellos eran la salvacion de la humanidad,pero ahora que su aldea habia sido invadida por los No-Consagrados ( tambien conocidos como zombies) fueron forzados a escapar sin tener lugar alguno al que ir.O al menos eso creian.

bueno como ya habia comentado el libro no es de color rosa y la parte amorosa menos lo es, no se puede esperar mucho de un libro que tiene un amor posapocaliptico, Mary definitivamente hace muchas malas deciciones y eso afecta a los demas. Una o dos lagrimas se salieron de mis ojos, pobre Mary, pobre, sufrio tanto.

El libro en si me gusto mucho mas que nada porque AMO A LOS ZOMBIES!! y porque tiene una buena historia y tambien interesante, les dejaria un link de descarga pero no lo tengo :( lo busque por dias pero nunca lo encontre al final lo compre en ingles, no es un ingles muy complicado la verdad asi que deberian leerlo.(less)

Štýl Carrie Ryan je surový. Píše všetko tak, ako to je. Bez servítky. Ako inak to mám ešte opísať? Existuje na to ešte iný výraz? Ktovie. Pravdepodobne áno, ale v úžase a v rozpoložení, v akom sa nachádzam, nemám síl ho hľadať. Jednoducho som touto knihou nadšená. Tak nadšená, že na nič iné, ako na jej úžasnosť nedokážem myslieť. Poznáte to. V živote prečítate stovky kníh a niektoré vám zarezonujú v pamäti a hneď po dočítaní máte sto chutí sa k nim opäť vrátiť. Po dočítaní Pobrežia som mala chuť knihu otvoriť na prvej stránke a začať opäť. Stačí to na vysvetlenie môjho postoju voči nej?

Gabrielle je úplne iná ako Mary. Je sympatickejšia. Jej myslenie je logickejšie. Jej postoj k životu je viac ľudský. Bojí sa. Túži. Dúfa. Bojuje. Snaží sa nájsť svoje miesto v živote, ale stále pochybuje. O sebe. O okolí. O najbližších. Gabrielle je ľudská skrz naskrz. Mary bola príliš svojrázna. Príliš sebecká. Ale i takí ľudia existujú. A pokiaľ ste Mary v Lese kostí takmer nezniesli, napríklad ako ja, v Pobreží hrôzy pochopíte, kým vlastne je. Prečo konala ako konala. Či svoje činy ľutuje. Či by chcela čosi zmeniť. Či sa túži vrátiť tam, odkiaľ prišla. Carrie Ryan na sebe zapracovala. Zapracovala na postavách. Na ich postojoch. Vlastnostiach. Myšlienkach. Krokoch. A ak sa bojíte, že Mary a Gabrielle sú jediné postavy, ktoré stoja za zmienku – mýlite sa. Ale zbytočne vám odhaľovať jednotlivé postavy a ich úlohu v knihe, je zbytočné. Prišli by ste oveľa. Preto taktne mlčím a jediné čo ešte dodám – charaktery vás nesklamú, ale vzbudia vo váš širokú škálu emócií.

I dejová línia je lepšia. Prepracovanejšia. Dychtivejšia. Uch, čo je to za slovo? Čo ním chcem povedať? Stránky budú doslova horieť, ako rýchlo nimi budete otáčať. Pretože túžba zistiť, čo bude ďalej, je v tomto prípade priam neznesiteľná. Rozdeliť si knihu na kúsky, kvôli nedostatku času? Au! Možno začiatok nie je taký dynamický, možno tá pravá akcia začína až po prvých 100 stranách. Ale keď príde, budete vzlykať, že nemôžte čítať ďalej. Jedna facka za druhou. Krik. Plač. Smiech. Modlitby. Túžba uškrtiť hrdinov. Túžba kohosi prefackať. A v prvom rade sa nejako pomstiť Carrie Ryan, za to, čo robí vašim milovaným večerným spoločníkom. Hanba jej! Krásne akčné putovanie. Áno, to je Pobrežie hrôzy. Jednoducho famózne.

Les kostí bol len začiatkom. Slabým odvarom toho, čo prišlo po ňom. Mary nás voviedla do svojho sveta, previedla ním. Gabrielle nás vtiahla hlbšie. Ukázala nám, ako to vnímajú iní. Ako to vníma ona. Krása. Jednoducho krása. Možno trochu morbídna, ale perfektne spracovaná. Čo si len pre nás prichystala Carrie v tretej časti? Ako to celé dopadne? Na koniec už len malá rada! V žiadnom prípade pred dočítaním Pobrežia hrôzy nečítajte obsah k tretiemu dielu. Prídete o prekvapenie. O vzrušenie. O prudko bijúce srdce. Nie celkom, ale trochu určite. Nechajte sa prekvapiť a pohltiť Lesom kostí. A ktovie, možno vo svojich snoch prežijete podobné dobrodružstvo ako Gabrielle či Mary.

It had all the thrills and chills such movies tend to display, and the world was bleak and terrifying. THE DEAD-TOSSED WAVES is no different. If I were to compare, I’d say it’s even better. A few days ago I cracked open the book and within a few pages I was transported back to that harsh world so devoid of happiness and so full of despair. In this sense the book entranced; the world I entered into was so fully realized I felt despair seep into me as I read; Ryan succeeds in creating a future that is frightening in its desolation. But amongst the pain and sadness and loss lies an underlying spark of hope that, like the lighthouse in the story, is always there and is constant, although at times it may dim to near nothing. Did that make sense? I’m not quite sure but it’s how I felt about the story.

I really must say, the cover of THE DEAD-TOSSED WAVES is gorgeous. It captures the bleakness of Gabry’s world in an eerie yet beautiful tone. Loved it! And the story itself…well, it’s depressing. There are quite a few twists that I half saw coming and half didn’t that made the story enjoyable, psychic that I am or not.

THE DEAD-TOSSED WAVES tells the story of Gabry, the daughter of Mary (protagonist of the first book). It takes place an unspecified amount of time after The Forest of Hands and Teeth, yet alludes to several events that took place in the first book. This doesn’t detract from the story but will satisfy the readers’ need for “closure” from the first book because it did leave off on a cliffhanger of sorts.

And my favorite part of the story was very well done- the zombies! Or in this case, the “Mudo” aka the “Unconsecrated”. There were several bonechilling scenes involving these zombies and which I can very clearly imagine taking place in a horror movie. I loved this; in fact I was reading this late at night and became VERY paranoid…I kept imagining there would be zombies in the corner of my eyes and kept expecting to hear their moans. In essence the book is not a typical “zombie” story; I get the feeling it’s more about humans and their will to survive in a world gone bad; despite this more realistic theme however, I admit that the zombies were what I enjoyed the most. Ryan has a beautiful prose that lets the story flow; it lends eloquence and compassion to Gabry’s voice, makes scary scenes that much more heart pounding, and conveys the atmosphere perfectly.

One thing in particular that I disliked was that every few pages or so, there has to be a paragraph where Gabry goes off on a tirade of sorts where she laments the “what ifs” of her actions and what she wants to do but can’t for some reason or another, as follows: “I want to ____. I want to ____. I want to _____. But instead I don’t. I can’t. Because ______.”. Now this particular way of thinking is acceptable if voiced once or twice or even three times, but when it happens every few pages it gets tiring and I get irritated. But aside from this complaint I liked THE DEAD-TOSSED WAVES and found it to be a page-turner (zombies!) that will satisfy fans of the first book and new readers alike. I am quite excited for the third book in the series, THE DARK AND HOLLOW PLACES! Recommended for fans of dystopian and paranormal lit. And zombie fans.

Loved this book! Not since Twilight: New Moon have I been utterly devastated on page 25 and been forced to drag my bruised and battered heart through the rest of a book, desperate for some kind of redemption...but I'm not gonna tell you if you get it or not!

The Dead Tossed Waves by Carrie Ryan is a companion novel to her debut, The Forest of Hands and Teeth. Let me put this out there right now, I think it was a spectacular follow-up. Plot in a nutshell, Mary from FoHT has a daughter named Gabry in the coastal town. Gabry is kind of a chicken. However, hot boy named Catcher convinces her to jump the barrier and go to the abandoned amusement park with him. Zombie mayhem ensues.
