Hooray For Fish!

I read this fun, colorful book to a group of kids, mostly ages 2-8, at a homeless shelter in the city last night. They LOVED it! We stopped and looked at the funny illustrations of all kinds of delightful fish (one little girl even noticed a fish whose scales were painted like leaves).

The easy rhyme and fun rhythm, paired with the vibrant imagery, was great and kept their attention throughout. And the surprise ending was a heart warmer, especially close to Mother's Day. I recommend this fun bo...more

This is the best kind of picture book! We check out 50 library books at a time and this is one of the very best. My 18 month old has been dragging it around for three weeks because it is big and bright. My first and second grader read it and enjoyed the clever illustrations (they don't usually even pick up the picture books). Today I read it for my preschool and it held the attention of all six kid. It was big enough for everyone to see, they couid count, practice colors, practice opposites, rhy...more
Jack Kirby and the X-man
This didn't hold X-man's attention at all...
And it didn't hold much interest for me. The fact it is a picture book about fish meant I was making comparisons with Dr. Seuss's One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. I wasn't exactly enamoured with Dr. Seuss's book, and this book didn't compare favourably...

This book is wonderful for toddlers just getting into reading. Little Fish swims around the ocean greeting all the other fish he sees. The fish uses descriptive language to help youngsters with vocabulary. The book has real vibrant illustrations that can be easily used for a preschool lesson. In the end, he is swimming for his mother which is a sweet ending. There is not much story to this book, but it is certainly visually appealing with great use of descriptive language.

This super cute, oversize picture book will be a big hit with your little ones. The bright colors in the illustrations are fun and inviting.

There is just enough text on each page to keep things moving so that young children will stay interested. The vibrant colors and silly words are what make this book such a treat!

This book was chosen for my read-aloud in my LIS 510 class at the University of Kentucky because of the vivid and bright illustrations. We were instructed to pick a picture book that we think children would want to have read to them. My favorite part about this book is the page where it asks how many fish can the reader see. It's great having the kids interact while using their ability to count.

The summer reading program this summer (2010) is Make a Splash with Reading, so story time today was 5 fish books. This is the type of story that explores all different types of one thing, really exploring adjectives. The colors were nice and there were heavy black outlines to make the images stand out. Not my favorite book of this type, it it was alright, and a board book.
Sarah
My 8 month old LOVES this book. She cannot get enough of it. If it were just me, I would probably give it 3 stars, but my daughter is so obsessed with it that there must be something about it that really appeals to babies. The bright, bold pictures are cute. The story is very simple. A baby fish swims around saying hello to various friends.

Summary (CIP): Swim along with Little Fish and meet all his fishy friends in a splishy, splashy riot of color and rhyme under the sea.

REVIEW: This cheerful and imaginative oversized boardbook with concepts and controlled vocabulary hits a little of everything: rhymes, opposites, a few numbers, colors, and patterns galore. Did you ever see fish with hearts, stars, or clouds on them? Or a peacock fish? You’ll see it all in this fun book that ends with a reunion with momma fish and ‘kiss, kiss, kis...more

An excellent book for new readers. Most sentences are three words or less, so students aren't intimidated to read themselves. And yet a lot of comparative adjectives, with accompanying pictures for each. Derivative of a small section of a Dr. Seuss book whose name escapes me, at the moment, but more in depth.

This book is about different kinds of fish. This book is great for young children and emergent readers. This book had rhyming words and great visuals that children can use for context clues to figure out the words. Good book to have in a kindergarten classroom.

I like this book becuase it takes the children on an exploration through the ocean with little fishy. Through the story, little fish, introduce the reader to all his friends in the sea. They all come in differents shares, sizes, and patterns.

This book is very popular with Baby Marissa and her Papa. We enjoy the large drawings and fanciful fish, such as the Eye Fish, Smiley Fish, and Gripy Fish. It's not Dr. Seuss so there are no creative and crazy rhymes, but it's a very cute book.
Nydia Munoz
This book is great to show emotions. It also teaches children opposites and similarities.

Learning extension: Make a treasure box fill it with different fish. have children decide what type of fish it is and discuss.

There's not a real steely line going on here, but this is a good read for the little tones. It is big print and with bright pictures and easy words. Great for those just starting out and learning to read. semester II

This was so cute. Had Royce and Dallin giggling. You meet all this silly types of fish throughout and then the favorite fish at the end is the mom fish. Really fun little book. written in rhyme if I remember right.
Elizabeth Schrank
This book does not really have a story line but it is a rhyming book. It is good for children who are just learning to read. The pictures are very bright and vibrant. Young children will find it engaging.
Mary
A great book for three year old storytimes or one on one sharing that introduces different ways to label zany fish. Lucy Cousins' bright, bold illustrations make it perfect for the intended age.
Kirei
Whimsical book for toddlers. There are lots of fun fish in the sea but the favorite one is mummy. (I sort of wish they had included daddy as well? Although this book is good for single moms!)
Erin
Quite imaginative and childlike--I ilke the hairy fish. Possible teaching tie-ins: alliteration for phonics, adjectives/description, repetition of words to learn by sight.Numbers.
Emily
This rhyming picture book is all about fish; there are fish of every shape, size and color! The pictures really make this book, they are very colorful and eye catching.
Alicia
Fishes and fishes and fishes! Beautiful fishes and rhyming fishes, lilting rhythm and lovely art. Enchanting. I'd love prints of every single page of this book, words and all.
Kristen
The large, bright illustrations and simple words make this a good baby or toddler story time pick. Also a good one-on-one read for the kiddos who are obsessed with fish.
Vivian
Big and Bright and Fun introduction to simple concept of "opposites" and new vocabulary -- Perfect to use with toddlers or pre-schoolers during a story time or at home!
Katie Jackson
This book uses fish to discover patterns, colors, and sizes. I would use this book to discuss the patterns, colors, and sizes we see around us.
Jamie
Brightly colored, sweet and silly... this book is simple and delightful! Both of my children (one is two and one is 11 months) love this book!!
Jennifer
Uncle Randy and Aunt Debbie brought Sasha this book from Shedd's Aquarium in Chicago. Sasha loves it and laughs everytime we read it!

Cute picture book - great picture of all the fish at the end for a "hunt and find" that Madelyn and I enjoyed every time.
Ebono1
good book on differences between fish and can relate that to differences in people. Good for counting and colors as well.
Erika
Library book. Cute little pictures of different "types" (real and imaginary) of fish. I think Gillian liked it alright.
