Darkest Fear (Myron Bolitar #7)
by
Harlan Coben
Edgar Award-winner Harlan Coben brings us his most astonishing—and deeply personal—novel yet. And it all begins when Myron Bolitar's ex tells him he's a father ... of a dying thirteen-year-old boy.
Myron never saw it coming. A surprise visit from an ex-girlfriend is unsettling enough. But Emily Downing's news brings him to his knees. Her son Jeremy is dying and needs a bone...more

This was not Harlan’s usual quality it was good but not fantastic. Usually his books are like I can’t put them down with lots of twists and turns. This one was just ok. It starts out with Myron’s parents selling the house. Dad’s heart attack has left them desirous of a different lifestyle. Mom is even trying to cook. Bad idea. She can’t cook. The other thing that happens is that Myron finds out he’s the father of a fourteen year old. Emily, I don’t know if you remember her, she is Greg’...more
DARKEST FEAR by Harlan Coben is 319 pages in paperback form. This is #7 in A Myron Bolitor Novel.
Brief Description:

Family relationships and family secrets are at the heart of this exciting and page-turning (once you're past the first few chapters) mystery, #7 in the Myron Bolitar series. Myron is first shocked by his parents and their life-changing transitions and then even more shocked that he may have fathered a son 14 years before who is now in need of a bone marrow transplant.

This seventh book in the Myron Bolitar series continues with the dark turns the previous two books have taken. However, this novel also examines the relationship between fathers and sons. Myron must face the fact that he and his parents are getting older and that the father and son roles may possibly soon be reversing. Myron must also wrestle with the possibility that he too is a father... of a teenager. Familiar faces make their return in this novel including Greg and Emily Downing, "A...more
This effort was MUCH more interesting than its predecessor. After a massive disappointment in "The Final Detail," Coben comes back to form. This book really moves. Obviously it's a departure from the common theme of the series (and I'll address that in a moment), but coming from a reader who lost his father recently enough for the experience to still be fresh, it not only moves with the speed of a bullet train, but it moves the heart as well. There were still minor issues involving...more
I'm a big fan of Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar Series, but this one just didn't hold my interest like the others I've read so far. Usually there is a sharp contrast between Myron and Win. Myron stands for justice and that which is morally right. Win is fine with the ends justifying the means. But in Darkest Fear, the line separating the two is quite blurred.

I love Myron Bolitar, this softie who also knows how to be a bad boy. And Win... What a pair! Not to mention Esperanza or Big Mama!
In this new episode, Myron is to help his ex-university girlfriend, Emily, with whom he had a last night stand the day before she got married to Myron's nemesis (on the basket-ball court) some 14 years ago, with the consequences we know (cf. One False Move).
He has to find the bone marrow donor for her son, donor who seems to have disppeared, or never really existed. ...more

Another home run by Coben, the Myron Bolitar series is right up with my favorites like Dirk Pitt and Spenser. In Darkest Fear, Myron is asked to find a bone marrow donor for his exes son. The same ex who married Myron's rival in college. What seems like an easy request is anything but. Myron is swept into a complex intrigue, a family who does anything to keep their secrets private, a disgruntled journalist trying to recover his mojo, and the uneasiness of working with others he doesn't trust...more
First off, and this is not a detriment to the book or series, this book has nothing to do with a sports agent, the sports world or sports in general. Sure, the main character is a sports agent, but he could just as easily been a florist and the book would not have changed. That being said, this book is a mystery-thriller. And a very good one at that.

Picked this up off the shelf at work. Two day read for me, with a decent plot, and a cast of funky characters. First Coben book I've read. He's so bad that it actually became fun reading. The first paragraph, I'm sure, was actually written as an entry into the Bulwer-Lyton bad writing contest. As a bonus, Coben drops into a 2nd person voice, addressing the reader as an author. He's clearly a fan of Douglas Adams, but lacks his wit.

I like Myron and Win. I read the books out of sequence, as I find them, which I find makes things more interesting, putting the threads together.
This filled in the Myron-Jeremy link that I'd come across in later books. There was less Win in this book, a shame as I like Win (he wouldn't like me!).
The plotting was classic Coben, with a couple of extra twists and unanswered questions that hung about like bad smells until inspiration struck Myron. Coben captured the savoir fai...more

7th in the Myron Bolitar series.[return][return]Coben continues in this installment to deal with more serious issues other than a witty approach to the mystery genre. [return][return]Aging parents particularly his increasingly fragile father and the sale of the only home he has ever known have sobered Bolitar.[return][return]Then lightning strikes in the form of his former lover Emily Downing and, we discovered in the last book, the mother of his 13 year old son. Harlan Coben- Darkest Fear (Dell Publishing 2001) 4 Stars
Myron Bolitar is shocked when an ex-girlfriend pays him a visit, only to announce that he is a father and has been for many years. Now his son is in need of a bone marrow transplant and the donor has suddenly disappeared. Is he really a father or is she just telling him that in the hopes that he will investigate and save her son? Either way he intends to find out the truth behind the donor’s disappearance. This book is a cross between a private investigator and the movie Jerry Maguire (involving a sports agent). A really slow start with chapters that don't appear to flow together. Seems kinda disjointed until around page 140 when it picks up and start making sense.

Don't ya just love it when you find a "new" author? Harlan Coben is FANTASTIC. This novel, 'Darkest Fear' is his 8th in his "Myron Bolitar" series. I intend to back-track and pick up the others I haven't yet read.

I think Harlan Coben is a great mystery writer and I particularly enjoy the Myron Bolitar series.
Book seven in Coben's series which features sports agent Myron Bolitar, former basketball player and totally believable human being, is all about fathers, sons and the intricate and often painful chains that link them together. Myron, who has just moved out of his parents' house at the age of 34, is worried about his father's health after a heart attack, but it's hard for either of them to talk...more

Darkest Fear is the seventh novel to feature sports agent and amateur detective Myron Bolitar. Myron is a sad-sack ex-basketball pro who’s a magnet for trouble and for troubled women. In the finest hard-boiled tradition, he’s also a confirmed smart-ass. Myron runs MB SportReps. His best friend is Win, a.k.a. Windsor Horne Lockwood III, wealthy eastern socialite, loyal friend and amoral killer. His assistant and now partner in MB SportReps is Esperanza Diaz, who worked her way through law s...more

Coban's Myron Bolitar books are always fun to read, although this time the fun at times interferes with the suspense. Nice to meet some characters from previous books, including Miron's one-time girlfriend (who appears to have a son by him!) and his rival in sports and love. Isn't everyone's (or every parent's) darkest fear the fear that something bad may happen to your child? This makes the story extra gripping and Myron's strong emotions credible.
More potato chips . . .
Another solid offering. Would be great as a road trip book. I will probably read more of these. They kind of remind me of Robin Cook. You always know what you are getting. You can count on it to be fun. And later on, when you look at a row of these books on the shelves, you will never be able to remember which ones you've already read.

Harlan Coben is just such a good writer - tense, suspenseful and with great imagery tossed on top like a sprinkle of glitter. This book was very interesting - lots of threads that came together and an intriguing criminal - someone who wants the victim's family to suffer the fear and anxiety more than the victim does. I wish, however, that Coben had played that aspect up more - I would have liked to know the killer's mind a bit better and I would have liked to feel a bit more of what the victim...more
A very good Myron Bolitar offering. As is often the case when reading a number of serial offerings with the same characters, I find it more and more difficult to offer objective opinions on the quality of the story. I like all the characters in the Bolitar books, even the violent, misogynistic, borderline sociopathic, but steadfastly loyal Win. I would despise the guy in real life, but I enjoy him in these books. I'm waiting for more Big Cyndi! On to #8 in the series.
Story about Myron, a sports agent and former basketball player, who finds out that he fathered a son 8 years before, who now needs a bone marrow transplant in order to survive. Unfortunately, the donner is missing and is linked to a series of unsolved murders. Compelling and well-written.
Not as good as the last one. It seems like maybe the series is moving away from each book focusing on a different sport/ sports hero? If so, I'll be very sad. Myron, Esperanza, and Win are fun to read, but what made this series stand out to me was the sports tie-in.
After a bit of a hiatus, I was glad to return to Myron Bolitar. I'm not sure, but maybe this is why I was anticipating the take-off of the plot so much that I was surprised when the fifth disc (of seven) ended and I still felt like the story hadn't quite taken off yet. I was definitely engrossed and found myself wanting to be in the car so I could listen, but I felt like this book didn't have the same feel as the first six. The story was fairly interesting, and I enjoyed how it played into My...more
This was the seventh Myron Bolitar book and the last before PROMISE ME. In the interim Coben wrote a series of standalone thrillers with other characters, although some of the characters from the Bolitar series put in appearances.

Audio Book. Myron is supposed to be a good guy. He slept with Greg Downings wife the night before they were married and now he finds out he is the father to Greg's son. He chases down a serial killer so he get that guy to give a bone marrow transplant
Yes, I have been on a tear reading Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar series. Trying to read in order but that can be hard when you're cheap and want to use the Philadephia Free Library. A few more to go and thank God for PFL.
Myron learns that his old college flame Emily Downing's 13-year-old son needs a bone marrow transplant, and that the potential match is missing. When she asks Myron to hunt down the donor, he wants nothing to do with her. After all, she did marry the man who ended Myron's professional basketball career with a cheap shot. But then she tells Myron that he is the boy's biological father, sending him on a search that might show the donor is a notorious serial killer the FBI has been looking for.
