I'm fairly indifferent on this one. It's not a "bad" cookbook, necessarily -- the recipes, though nothing very original, are good basics and starters for people who want to know how to make pretty common recipes (Eggplant Parmesan, Mac and Cheese, stuffed potato skins, etc), but have maybe never tried to before. These are the quick types of recipes that you can get anywhere, and they are straightforward and use some shortcuts, like jarred sauces, etc. I'm not opposed to that in itself (it is how...more I'm fairly indifferent on this one. It's not a "bad" cookbook, necessarily -- the recipes, though nothing very original, are good basics and starters for people who want to know how to make pretty common recipes (Eggplant Parmesan, Mac and Cheese, stuffed potato skins, etc), but have maybe never tried to before. These are the quick types of recipes that you can get anywhere, and they are straightforward and use some shortcuts, like jarred sauces, etc. I'm not opposed to that in itself (it is how most of us cook on the day to day), but I do think you have to be clear about what type of book you're pushing. Is it semi-homemade ala Sandra Lee, or is it from scratch? I didn't realize when I picked it up that it wasn't from scratch, so if you don't know that going in, it may irritate you. (Or, if you already know how to dump a jarred sauce on breaded fried eggplant, you may find this pointless. Again, it's just a matter of how you cook at home.) There are a lot of basic "entry-level" recipes (<-- I amused myself with that one), as well as some more intricate recipes for the more adventurous cook. Looked at this way, the book can be used progressionally, building your skills over time. It's also a nice basic reference on recipes you want to be able to throw together quickly.

Setting the recipes aside, though, I was not even a little bit pleased with the design of the book. There is no table of contents, which immediately means I'm setting that cookbook back on the shelf. If I can't open it up and see a list of the food I'm going to be making, I don't want it. As I flipped through the book, I realized part of why there is no TOC -- the book's organization is a mess. Or, I guess there just isn't one; there's no scheme to it, no rhyme or reason. There are no real "sections" that you typically look for in a cookbook. There is no meat section or desert section, as one would come to expect. Nor are the recipes set up in "meal" order, a try entree with this side with this dessert type of thing. Recipes are somewhat set out like with like, but not in any type of progression, and there are no dividing pages to let me know I'm moving on from Poultry into Pasta, etc.

I was also very disappointed at the lack of pictures in the book. We eat with our eyes first, and you may look at a recipe and think 'eh' but look at the glossy delicious photo of that same recipe and feel the need to make it, asap. This was a lost opportunity on the part of the book's designers -- whenever there was a picture, the food looked absolutely delicious, but they were so few and far between that the overall impression was blah.

There are some recipes I intend to try (when I'm not sick, as I don't think my family wants food cooked by Typhoid Misty...), and when I do I will update you. For now, I would say pick this up only if you are a basic cook who needs a good variety reference without complication, or if it's at your local library and you want to give it a browse.(less)

I was asked to review Let's Eat by Denis Burroughs as part of a virtual book tour. It's a short and sweet self-published cookbook (a total of about 50 pages) full of recipes plus a couple of fun extras (baking substitutions, how to know when things are done, etc.). I have not actually tried the cookbook out yet so I am just reviewing the book itself. Like the book, I'll keep this short and sweet.

First of all, I’d like it to be known that I love to eat and I love to try new dishes. I’m not the best cook in the world, so I rely on good recipes to disguise my lack of culinary skills. So, I was excited to get Let’s Eat because the author is Italian and who doesn’t love Italian food? I was really anxious to see what recipes she had to offer.

When I got the book, I was a little disappointed. I was expecting a nice sized cookbook (for the price it’s going for) with some tasty dishes that would make me eager to try. That was not the case.

Let’s Eat is a simple cookbook with dishes that do not require a lot of preparation. It even features general cooking tips like preparing, measuring and substituting. So, if you are not ready for the Rachel Ray or Paula Dean cooking level, you could still whip up a nice meal in no time.

The book did not have a table of content so I had to flip through the book to find out where everything was. Usually cookbooks are organized with chicken dishes here, desserts there, etc, but this book seemed to have no particular order. I found that to be odd because most cookbooks that I own or have leafed through always have some type of organization to let you know what area to thumb through to find what you are looking for.

After sifting through the recipes, I did find some favorites like Lasagna, Manicotti, and Swedish Meatballs and Macaroni and Cheese. I already know how to make these dishes off the top of my head, but for someone that doesn’t, the instructions are simple and easy to follow.

None of the recipes were complicated, but a lot of them just did not appeal to me like Marshmallow Potatoes, Mayonnaise Cake, and Zucchini Cake. Not to say that they may not be tasty dishes, but those were just not high on my list to try.

Another thing that I noticed was a lack of pictures. There are a few pictures, but not enough. With me, if a dish looks good, it makes me want to try it. If I can’t see it, nine times out of ten, I won’t try it.

If you know me at all, you'd know that I love cooking. I love food, and I love trying new things. So when I was offered the chance to review this new little cookbook with lots of Italian recipes, I jumped at the chance. I was not disappointed either. With 66 recipes of all types of food, from sweet cakes and fun drinks, to salads and pastas, you'll find something you'll love in this book.

I tried the Eggplant Parmesan recipe for my review. I've been buying fruit and veggies from a local food co-op and luckily in one of the baskets was a beautiful eggplant. Not wanting to leave anyone out that might not like eggplant, I also used this recipe with chicken breasts as well. The recipe, Easy Eggplant Parmesan is on page 14 in the book. This is a quick and easy recipe that anyone of any skill level can handle with no problem. It turned out deliscious and was easy to make after a long day at work.

Being a busy working mom with two teenagers, I like recipes with few ingredients, easy, quick, and won't cost me an arm and a leg to make. This cookbook fills the bill nicely. The next recipe I'm going to try is the Mayonaise Cake! I know, Right?! Mayo Cake?!?! Reading through the description though, sounds YUMMY!! Luckily I have all the ingredients and I even have fat free mayo. So it doesn't have to have too much fat in it. ;)

If you're a busy mom or dad, love to cook, like easy recipes that you can make quickly and have a great sit down dinner with your family, this is a great book to have in your cookbook library! I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone! No matter your skill level as a cook, this book will let you prepare some fantastic meals, drinks, and desserts! This would be a great gift for a kid going off to college, a house warming present, or even a wedding gift. I'd also recommend it for the holidays! Definitely a great Christmas present for sure!

You know those familiar recipes that your mom always made? Well, this new cook book has them all in one place. I was so thrilled to have the opportunity to read and use this book. I tried several recipes from this adorable cook book. My favorite is the marshmallow potatoes which I always make with ham for the holidays. I tried to recreate this one from memory and they never had the right balance of savory and sweet. This one hit that just perfectly. I think any cook would love to have this handy...more
