Recommends it for:
beginning readers
The paintings are wonderful and I really enjoyed this book even though there’s no story at all. I kept being reminded of the book The Little Engine That Could and how good the apples and oranges looked on the book cover. I think this book could get young kids interested in eating various vegetables and fruits. The best part of the book was at the end, each fruit and vegetable has an information paragraph about: when it first grew, and where in the world it’s from, how it grows, its colors, etc....more
Reciting the alphabet song is a big deal for toddlers; by the time children get to kindergarten singing the alphabets are mastered by almost every child. Eating the Alphabets (Fruits &Vegetables from A to Z) by Lois Ehlert includes 30 pages that provide her readers with more than one fruit or vegetable for every letter in the alphabet. Some of the edibles are known and others are not as familiar; as a result the book contains a glossary that give details about every fruit and vegetable liste...more

Critique: A. Selection of foods
B. I thought the author did a great job selecting many different types of foods ones both known and unknown to the reader. This gave the reader something to reference that he/she should know and then expand their knowledge to something they may not have heard of at this age.

A = This is a traditional-ish ABC book list foods - both traditional and non-traditional - that match each letter. Each letter is accompanied by exuberant drawings of wonderful and eclectic fruits and vegetables. The book ends with a glossary of the fruits and vegetables that kids can look up to read more about.
B = This book's variety of examples is wonderful. Often, in ABC books A is for apple and x is for x-ray. Not very interesting to the curious student. This book, however, breaks the mold....more

I love Lois Ehlert's books. The art is so colorful and creative. The thing I love about this book is that it teaches the alphabet using familiar fruits and vegetables, but introduces a wide variety of ones that might not be so familiar like "endive" and "kumquat". I really want my son to know there's more to fruits and vegetables than carrots and apples, so this book was perfect.
I'm also a "Q" and "X" snob when it comes to alphabet books, and I found that this book passes the test. For "Q" the a...more

Eating the Alphabet is a deliciously simple artistic presentation of many fruits and vegetables, organized by the letters of the alphabet. Each fruit or vegetable is depicted in watercolor collage that is somewhat reminiscent of Eric Carle's style. The alphabet format combined with artistic constraints make for some interesting food choices: ugli fruit, jicama, and xigua are some less-familiar choices, presented right along with apples, bananas, and potatoes. Although toddlers tend to gravitate...more

Different kinds of fruits and vegetables, from apples to zucchini, are used to illustrate the ABCs.
The use of brightly colored paper and watercolors make the fruits and vegetables practically jump off the page. Each entry is presented in both upper and lower case ("Aa—ARTICHOKE—artichoke"). Backgrounds are empty and white, putting the focus on the minimal text and colorful illustrations. A glossary in the back provides more information on the wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

"Eating the Alphabet: Fruits And Vegetables From A To Z" is a fun picture book. This is intended for young child from ages 1-4. The main purpose of this book is to educate children about the Alphabet while teaching them the names of many fruits and vegetables. The book "Eating the Alphabet" by Lois Ehlert was a great alphabet and fruit and vegetable book for children. The illustrations in the book, however, I did not like. I didn't feel they did justice as to what and how the foods looked. I feel the illustrations should have been more realistic, so the children can have a better chance of recognizing a food if they see it in real life. This way they can relate easier to what they saw and learned in this book. The variety of the foods given for most l...more

In brilliant watercolor collages this picture book introduces young readers to a wide variety of fruits and vegetables from A to Z. The words are shown in capital and lowercase letters set in bold type for easy reading. At the end of the book is a detailed glossary that includes pronunciation, botanical information, the origin and history of the particular plant and occasional mythological references, with a small watercolor picture to remind the reader of what the plant looks like.

This book features some more exotic choices of foods, which is fun, but I don't care much for the illustrations. The book is essentially a first words book with food, so it consists of nothing more than drawings of foods next to their names. The book offers a handful of different foods for each letter of the alphabet.

I really wanted to like this book. In fact, I checked it out several times (accidentally). The idea of teaching the alphabet with food is catchy and i think that is what I was responding to in those desparate moments of searching the shelves for good literature for the same toddler who is ready to rebel against the library's structure and quietness (i know that is a long run-on thought, but we mothers of toddlers are always trying to fit a lot into a short time frame!). I think the disconnect he...more
This book is filled with colorful fruits and vegetables. Using the alphabet Lois Ehlert list fruits and vegetables that children love and some they may have never heard of before. Each is paired with a water colored image. The images are big and nicely done. I think this book would be great to use in a pre-k or kindergarden classrooms. You could use it when talking about the alphabet or if you wanted to included nutrition into a lesson. This book would be perfect. Students can be involved by see...more

I think that this book is a good way to teach kids not only about the alphabet but about all of the fruits and vegetables out there- which is a healthy food group for kids to learn about and to be able to identify. Even the foods that are less common are good for the kids to read about because it exposes them to different things and even different cultures as to where the foods are from.
