It's hard to make a statement about a hundred-sixty-page children's book. Why pick up a book first written in the forties and targeted to little, English girls of a certain race and class? There's not a lot to this book: a twelve-year-old girl goes to boarding school, she's worried about making friends, she struggles with her temper, her grades, and the spoiled, rich girl in her form. There are some dirty tricks, some practical jokes on teachers, and girls with gentile problems: a new baby at ho

I’ve never been able to figure out why my parents weren’t rich or British. It would have been so much more convenient because I really felt, growing up, that I was meant for a place like Malory Towers. As such a book like this with so many glaring flaws is still completely delightful to me. Like my friend Abigail described, when I sit down to write out my thoughts all I can think of are all the negatives. So let's get that out of the way: It is formulaic and predictable. The writing is not

I was fortunate to find out about this series (this is the first book in a 6 book series) because of one Goodreads friend, and thanks to another Goodreads friend was able to purchase the six book series for less than the cost of mailing. I’m really happy to have them. It’s going to take some discipline on my part to wait to read the next five until I’ve read some other books further up in my queue.
I guess the plot was formulaic and the girls were all a “type” but I thoroughly enjoyed More...

Growing up in Holland I acquired a ravenous hunger for the England of Enid Blyton's books.
You know: The rip-roaring yet somehow quite safe sense of adventure.
There's always a sensible one in the troupe of children; the Julians, the Jacks, the Sallys, the Hillarys who come up with some calm titbit of wisdom or creative solution of the If we tie this here shoestring to that buoy and send in Timmy with a note attached to his collar Uncle Quentin will send a raft to get us More...

I know I am not the only one whose love of boarding school stories began with this series! I embraced Darrell and Sally and their adventures at Malory Towers, despite their anti-American bias, and longed for midnight feasts, adventures in field hockey, uniforms, and tuck boxes. In fact, my sister and I used to play "boarding school," (we also played "orphans," which my mother found very amusing) wearing black skirts, white shirts and black velvet ties around our necks. M

Ah umur.... :-)

I read this book because I heard a fabulous recording of a talk about Enid Blyton from Seven Stories. It’s interesting to me how Blyton has been rehabilitated in the world of children’s literature. Indeed, when I ordered this book up from the stacks of Auckland Public Library the librarian smiled wryly and said, when I was a new librarian, these books weren’t allowed. Plus ça change. I loved Malory Towers as a youngster. So I was a bit dubious about reading the book after all these decades. I lo

Sekarang waktu kerja, kaget tak tersangka-sangka ternyata banyak juga yg suka n punya buku ini. Alhasil, sengaja kupinjam dan kubaca ulang.

i loveee these books :) i love the way that old books were written- as in, how enid blyton wrote them. i love the old covers/editions, they make it seem so much more old-timey. but the new covers are so cute. i'll say the same about the rest of the series. i was REALLY upset when i finished reading the series, and i was really skeptical about reading pamela cox's new ones- i didnt want to- but i tried New Term at Malory Towers and i enjoyed it immensely! since she fit the style of writing to eni

As with a few other books I've reviewed before, I'm rating this with the feelings I had for it at the time, not by any means an objective judgement on it as an adult! I used to devour Enid Blyton's work, despite being aware of the at times icky implications (racism, Anglo-centrism, sexism, classism, etc). There was something about it, something nostalgic. It was a midnight feast in its own way.
Anyway, Darryl was probably my favourite of all Blyton's schoolgirls. I don't remember much More...

I've borrowed this book from my niece, who is an avid reader and has read this series countless times. I last read them when I was about 10 - nevertheless the characters came flooding back once I started reading. I love the way that none of the girls are perfect and Gwendoline, the most irritating girl, gets her comeuppance! There's a lot of emphasis on girls achieving a lot and having high expectations of themselves and taking responsibility for their decisions - all to be encouraged. I ex

Blyton at her best. For all the criticism this author received in her lifetime, she filled a niche well. The books are uncomplicated childhood romps. The language is endearing and the moralistic tone, while stark & oft-times 'heavy', is likewise uncomplicated. Re-reading as an adult I've noticed what EB is not ... her work is not anti-alternative lifestyles ... her work is not chauvinistic but actually more feminist than I remembered ... her characters are not perfect & even show that parents ca

As a little nipper, Enid Blyton was my ultimate saviour. Growing up feeling a little awkward and different to everyone else, books were my escape and Enid Blyton's worlds provided a perfect sense of escapism, with a combination of excitement, adventure, and safety.
After around 15 years since last picking one up, I found my Malory Towers collection when my parents cleared out their loft and I was intrigued to find out how I would feel about them now. To be honest, I was a little shoc More...

It's too bad I didn't discover this series of books until now. My girls would have loved them when they were little. One of their favorite games to play together was Boarding House (frequent viewings of A Little Princess). It was fun to read about it - it really reminded me of Hogwarts. But as a parent, it just makes me think about how horrible it would be to send your 12 year old off to have someone else raise her. How did they do that? How do they still do that? It's just so against eve

I read the whole lot of these in the space of a week of greedy nostalgia. I too remember reading them when I was younger and wishing I could go to boarding school. Having been on the other side of a school desk for many years in the interim, the first thing that struck me this time was how much the girls were left to, and expected to, sort things out for themselves. The respect of the younger students for the older that was the result of, or allowed?, the prefect system is not something evident

Originally published in 1946, this first entry in Enid Blyton's immensely popular six-book Malory Towers series - which follows its heroine, Darrell Rivers, through her years at a boarding school in Cornwall - seems to include many of the characters and plot devices that have come to be so closely associated - almost to the point of cliche - with the girls' school-story genre.
In Darrell herself, we have the eager new girl - enthusiastic, good-hearted, determined to be a credit to her More...

I really enjoyed this first book in Enid Blyton's Malory Towers series. Originally published in 1946 the book has its flaws (okay, I admit some of them were pretty big) and there was a bit of moralizing but over all it was a fun read. I enjoyed the innocence of the characters and their actions, even the bad ones.
This story and the characters were so insulated in their own little world and it could be easy to find fault with the story because of that but I think that is what holds a gre More...

Don't know why but it's a really good book, especially for children. In Blyton's world people are mostly very decent and kind and highly insulated. The main character, Darrell, is what people would hold to be the model pupil and English schoolgirl at Malory Towers although she struggles with her temper. An idyllic book focusing on the joys of childhood, friendship and school days, Blyton takes her readers back to a simpler, more peaceful time.

Enid Blyton was one of the authors I grew up with and because of these boarding school types books I begged and begged my parents to send me to one. I'm glad they did because I had a great time. Ok, NOT as exciting as the books but it was a great experience.
Honestly I don't remember each books' details. I read this when I was in middle school but I think I'll go on Ebay and see if I can find a set for a decent price.

I loved this book when I was a child, in fact any Enid Blyton book was on the top of my list. Nowadays the text is politically incorrect and I beleive that they have been rewritten in order to update them. I find this a shame because the stories are set in a time when things were different. I still have my original copies which were handed down to me and I shall hand them down to the next generation.

Malory Tower's has to be the ultimate in innocent boarding-school girls fun. I adored this series as a kid and it's still written into my memory as a magical window into a childhood that was never my own. I guess they have their Harry Potter's nowadays, but I do hope kids still read these ones too. Pranks on teachers, Lacrosse games, midnight adventures ... "oh what fun!"

The fact I still remembered practically the entire plot, despite this being the first time I have reread the Malory Towers books in at least 12 years, made me give this 5 stars. Also, the memories of how much I loved it as a child.
I think their lovely swimming pool would run into problems with health and safety regulations now though :)

I found this at a bookstore in London during my first trip overseas and fell in love. The next time I was in England I bought what the store had on the shelf, but have holes in my collection.
What can happen to a girl when she heads off to boarding school? A lot. A good story and fun read. The rest in the series are just as good.
