This book was very good. For the most part. I really enjoyed most of the novel. There was something at the end that just didn't sit well with me at all and made the book go to hell in a hand basket, but I will get to that in a bit.

This was an enjoyable read, but it’s not a series favorite for me. Evan and Kendall were hot together, and their romance was both steamy and touching. But something about their relationship also felt a bit immature and like overeager, anxious, reunited teenagers in love. I felt like they each had some growing up to do and together as a couple.

The Chase is the 4th book in the Fast Track series by Erin McCarthy, a contemporary romance series about NASCAR drivers. The first two books, Flat-Out Sexy and Hard and Fast were extremely good. The third book, Hot Finish, was mediocre at best. I was hoping that McCarthy would get her groove back and that The Chase would prove that the hot mess of Hot Finish was a fluke. I was wrong. I was hoping that McCarthy would get her groove back and that The Chase would prove that the hot mess of Hot Finish was a fluke. I was wrong. I didn’t think it was possible, but this book is actually worse.

I’ve always liked Evan Monroe’s character but never really thought of him as hero-worthy. In this book he proved that he could definitely hang with the sexy heroes preceding him, Elec Monroe, Ty McCordle and Ryder Jefferson. He had this endearing, laid back sense of humor and was possibly the most romantic of the Fast Track heroes. His desire to make it work with the girl who broke his heart as a teen and his determination to not let his fear of getting hurt impede him was both a joy and heartbreaking to watch. His scenes were by far my favorite.

Then there’s Kendall. Incredibly stupid, immature, insecure Kendall. Was there ever a moment when I didn’t wish she would get run over by a monster truck? Ah yes, the scenes where she shut the hell up. This girl-because that’s exactly what she is, contrary to what her birth certificate says-had issues out the ying yang. She had this amazing ability to get in her own way. You could even call it a superpower. Not only was she insecure about anything and everything-who the hell complains about their perfect breasts,anyway?-but she over-analyzed everything too. If Evan gave her a bouquet of flowers, Kendall would think “Is this his way of trying to break up with me?” Oh my God, how did this girl even manage to dress in the morning? And the immaturity! Kendall didn’t do much screaming, but there was a hell of a lot of stomping, silent treatments, not answering calls/texts, and locking doors. There is no doubt in my mind that Kendall was the worst of the ladies of Fast Track. Even worse than Suzanne-the heroine of Hot Finish-and Suzanne made me want to scream. If Kendall was excluded from this book, I’d give it an A+ and buy copies for all of my friends.

Then there were the contrived obstacles that were periodically thrown at Evan and Kendall to make their road to HEA-happily ever after-all the more difficult. As if being able to occupy the same room as Kendall wasn’t difficult enough. The “Being with you is going to get in the way of my dream” obstacle. The “My boss doesn’t want us to be together” obstacle. The “What if you don’t really love me? Maybe you just think you do?” obstacle. And the last obstacle, practically jumping up and down with WTFery, which I’m going to put in spoiler tags:

Whew. It felt good to get that off of my chest. Suffice it to say, this book was horrible and it had everything to do with Kendall and nothing to do with Evan, his wonderful friends and family and Kendall’s hilarious best friend Tuesday. As much as I’m tempted to continue this series because the next book is about Tuesday, I won’t. To quote a phrase Kendall used to excess in this book, I can’t do this anymore.

One of the oddest endings I've read. It's a fun story, Kendall and Evan are so lovable and their scenes together are sweet, sexy and just enjoyable. The "twist" at the end did nothing for me. It felt just kind of tossed in, and it didn't let the book really finish. Yes, there's a conclusion to Evan and Kendall's story, but this plot twist felt very random. It was used for 30 pages of angst, and I don't think it was needed.

Next up Tuesday's story, yay!

I just plain liked this book! Second chance at love - damn good story and the sex was HAWT!!! Two people that flat out love each other; can't get enough of one another; even time doesn't diminish their love.

The Chase exemplifies the fun and always entertaining writing skills of Erin McCarthy. It is the forth in her fast track series about super sexy drivers and the women who tame them!

Kendall Holbrook and Evan Monroe were young and in love, but a simple misunderstanding separated them. It is many years later and they meet again on the racing circuit. Kendall has become the new female ‘hit’ driver and Evan is unfortunately having a run of bad luck on the track. Their unresolved past causes tempers to flare and when both of them find themselves working for the same sponsor they find them must play ‘nice.’ But old attractions die hard. Will they only lead to more trouble?

This was a light and enjoyable read. I liked how the author resolved the main characters misunderstanding early in the story. (Sometimes when some authors drag these bogus situations on by the time they finally get together they rush the relationship and I never feel the main characters truly care for each other.) I loved how the real relationship between them has time to be explored. This story was bit of a switch because the heroine wants to pursue her career and she thinks a relationship with Evan will hurt it! On the other hand, Evan has lost his passion for driving. I really liked the earnest hero. Although he plays the playboy for his publicity, deep down he has never gotten over Kendall. He really is a decent and nice guy. And although he has lost his way on the racing circuit, he does know that he wants Kendall in his life again. If anything, the fun parts of the story are the sections when Kendall tries to put the ‘brakes’ on a serious relationship. Because she doesn’t want the complications and the gossip. But Evan is undaunted and is constantly trying to ‘persuade’ her.

I liked Kendall’s strong character; she is more practical than Evan and wants a successful career in racing. She has had to work hard to get where she is at, despite her family’s disapproval and her gender. On the other hand, Evan whose entire family is in the racing business just followed in their footsteps and now wants something different. Kendall. The two main characters really complemented each other. I enjoyed this story although I liked the prior book the series, Hot Finish a bit more. This is a lighter read but that fans of Erin McCarthy will not be disappointed.

The Chase was a sexy and fun read that fans of contemporary books looking for real and charming characters will enjoy. Who wouldn’t love hot drivers, please keep them coming!

Edit: If you were just meh about this book, check out Speed Demons by Gun Brooke. It's a romance about a female driver staging a comeback to racing while suffering from PTSD after a really bad crash. I with this book had that much meat!

Likes: The sexing was hot. Way hot. Kendall and Evan do have great chemistry and the one liner jabs they share are hilarious. I love to read McCarthy's books because of the humor she brings. She did not disappoint.

I am torn... and I have read many of the other reviews and I agree wholeheartedly that the twist at the end pissed me off and left me unfulfilled without a true HEA. That is all I am going to say about the twist because I accidently read it was coming in a spoiler and I wish I hadn't. I just wish it was resolved in a different way or wasn't true.

I just love this series! Through the book, I was just in love with Evan, and Kendall too, both mostly with Evan. He was just gooey sweet and so frickin' hot! I loved this story of young love renewed. (Of course I would, I married my high school sweetie!) It was all just wonderful...

Except, there was this little conflict tossed in at the end. I could have done without that, or without how childish it made Kendall react. It would have been nice to get some resolution there, I am hoping we get that...more

She particularly has no time for Evan Monroe, a talented driver who also happens to be her ex-boyfriend and the only man she ever loved.

When Evan and Kendall end up in a restaurant together, they finally have a frank conversation about what went wrong - and sure enough, it was all a big misunderstanding. They end up reconciling that evening and going back to Evan's house for some of the hottest sex he's ever experienced. But in the morning, Kendall tells him that this was a one time thing. She has no time for romance, she's focused on her rookie season. And since Evan has just lost his sponsor due to his crappy season he'd be smart to do the same. Focus on the season. But Evan can't stop thinking about Kendall. He just knows that if she would give him a chance, they could make it work. Can he make Kendall stop focusing so much on work, and redirect some of her energy towards love?

The Fast Track series is one of my favorite contemporary romance series. Erin McCarthy has a strong voice and a serious knack for creative sex scenes that inform the action and are scald your fingers spicy. I loved Evan already, as he was a secondary character in previous books. But I had a really hard time warming up to Kendall. I felt that she was closed down and very often avoided situations that no grown woman would. I wanted to shake her shoulders and tell her to put some big girl panties on and deal with multiple situations in which she was very often *at least* 50% culpable. She just seemed very immature, and sometimes quite difficult to like.

The book also has a sharp left turn in the final 50 or so pages. The romance is proceeding along nicely, and then an unexpected plot device pops up. An unneeded plot device. It's dispensed with almost too quickly and with far too much dispatch. Especially for two characters who have both been quite immature throughout the book.

Overall, the book is a quick read, but far from my favorite in the series. If you haven't read any of the Fast Track series, I strongly recommend Flat Out Sexy, which is the best of the series, in my opinion.

Final grade: B-/C+(less)

Only after that Kendall isn't sure that they should be together and Carl (owner) doesn't want them to date. Ultimately they end up together which is how it has to be but McCarthy breaks my heart a little becuase she throws in a twist I don't like. Six days after they are married Evan finds out that a girl that he had a one night stand with is pregnant. So Kendall backs away from him again and ignores his door pounding - really, after she made that mistake before? But they do come back togegther after he makes his grand gesture and serenades her at the race track with his off key singing voice. I don't know, I liked the book becuase it's fun and easy and I can like the characters. I do not like that there is this illegitimate child story on the side and how excited Evan is about taking care of that baby. I mean you want men to take responsibility but it's just painful that Kendall will have Sarah (I think?) as a part of her life forever and that Evan will have a child that isn't hers especially since she doesn't know when she will want to be pregnant and have kids becuase of her career. It was a little too serious for me for this kind of book and also a little corny at the end when Kendall is talking about different kinds of families. (less)

Meaning: sure, Evan may be one hundred percent unintimidated by and supportive of the fact that the woman he loves shares his "manly" profession, but the rest of the world isn't necessarily so evolved and their relationship affects her professional image in a different way than it does his - but despite these external societal things they can't control, Evan and Kendall figure out how to muddle through such bull-honky on their own terms, together.

McCarthy's series has been reliably good. Her characters are more varied than usual and face some interesting challenges. The stories are steamier than I usually go for, so I think I keep coming back for the interesting people and the world she's describing. The Monroe siblings feature pretty heavily in the series (and scenes with the family, like when the two brothers fight and get yelled at by their mom, are spot on), and readers met oldest brother Eric in the first book. I liked Evan. I was afraid he was going to play the immature jerk with Kendall, so it was refreshing for him to be willing to let go of the past and move forward. His decision toward the end of the book about his future also felt mature and thoughtful.

This is a fun series. I really enjoy it. I like McCarthy's contemporaries better than her paranormals. I think it has to do with the dialog, it's short and snappy. I find it humorous.

The Chase irritated me a bit because the main character was so damn whiny. She'd cry every time she was teased or felt attacked. And she was supposedly a "strong" woman making it in "a man's world." Whatever.

I could not wait to read this book!
These series are a fav of mine. The book before this one was a bit vague, but still miss Erin can pull a happy ending out of anything! And I really need my dose of non –angst-y happy endings.
Sure the third book was a bit off with that but I lived trough it and even liked it a bit.
So you can all see why almost fainted when I finally got it and started reading. I was hoping this one was fab! Boy, was I wrong.

This is such a strong series. I've really grown to care for the characters and absolutely love that the couples don't complete their journeys at the conclusion of each book. Weddings, babies, etc pop up in future books and everyone gets involved. I will also say that this is one of the few series that I read with very beta men. The Chase is the fourth instalment of the Fast Track series and where we finally see Evan Monroe admit that he would give up his playboy image and fall in love. He never understood what happened and neither one of them ever got over their love for each other despite the hurt, harsh words, and hard feelings that have defined their relationship ever since.

Overall, I really liked this book which was kind of surprising since I have never really liked Evan in the previous books. But seeing him and the way that he is around Kendall, I have changed my mind. I especially like the dynamic of Evan and Kendall together. He is a very laid-back, relaxed personality. She's a high-strung, wound-up personality. Together they provide the perfect complement for each other.

I like how accepting Evan is of his and Kendall's feelings. You would think that he would be a little leery from the events of 10 years ago, but he accepts that he hasn't been happy without Kendall. So he's willing to take and enjoy whatever he can with her right now. I loved his level of commitment to their love. He is all-in for this relationship wherever it takes them and the relationships his priority over everything else. You have to love that level of commitment from a guy and you don't see it all that often in the romance novel genre. Usually, it is the heroine in the relationship that's fully committed.

What I didn't really like about the novel was the way that the climax of the story came about at the end. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I had real issues with Kendall's handling of it all esp. after all that they have been through in the last 10 years. Erin McCarthy explained a little behind the reasoning behind it, but I feel like that aspect of the story line needed to be further developed for me to accept Kendall's actions. I just felt like it was kind of all thrown in at the end as a last-minute justification, rather than a true issue throughout the book.

Overall, this was a great installment of the Fast Track series. Now I am really looking forward to Tuesday & Diesel's story. The 1st chapter at the end of this novel was a FABULOUS teaser!(less)

Hmm, if I hadn't read the first two books of the series, this might have been a 4 star read, but as a 4th installment, it's sort of disappointing. I mean, I ate through the pages. The story had me hooked, but then once it was over, looking back on the journey...it left me with an "only 3 stars" taste in my mouth.

And for the rest of the book, I really liked him. But I still like Elec the best, even if his name is the worst.

Then there's Kendall. On the one hand, go girl. The Danika Patrick of the circle. On the other hand, really? Even Imogen, who seems to really have some issues, is a cooler cucumber than Kendall (and I liked her a heckovalot more). WTF. She really let me down at the epiphany and while Evan was living a nightmare, instead of standing by her man, she made him completely relive the worst moments of his life. And not for any therapeutic reason, just because she's a weak-willed idiot. And has no where NEAR the class that Tamara has (who dealt with the SAME nightmare situation, with Evan's brother, no less, but came through with flying colors...and can I get a gut-check on the plot devices? Four books, almost identical plot devices in books #1 and #4, not very original). And then suddenly one sentence jolts her back to herself and viola, she stops being an idiot. Whatever.

Yeah for the HEA, Evan deserved that one with spades. Not quite in the same way that I was pulling for Ryder's HEA, but had no idea why the hell he wanted to be with Suzanne. But close.

So the first two books are so going into my personal library. I'm on the fence about the third, but it could make it on Ryder alone. The jury's out. But this one may just linger at the library in case I ever get a hankering to relive this piece of Evan's journey.

Bring on Tuesday and Diesel's story. Do I have to wait until October? Shucks.(less)

The Cover: It's not as hot as the other covers, but it's nice. I like how they included a woman since this one has a female racer and a male racer together as the main couple.

I struggled to rate this one, as I liked the book but not quite as much as the rest of the books in the series. Ultimately I gave it three stars because it was a satisfying story for a character that I have enjoyed in the other books in the series, but the conflict at the end of the book just made me angry.
