Concise review of supplies, ingredients, and methods of cooking and creating a variety of (relatively) healthy bento lunches; each style of bento often lists several alternative versions with multiple takes on donburi, sukiyaki, teriyaki, etc. Making onigiri, dumplings, tamagoyaki, fast "pickled" veggies, kinpira, and other common Japanese style foods are covered in an off-hand natural manner as well. You come away with a good grasp on how to shop for, plan, schedule, and improvise these meals....more

I haven't felt this excited about a cookbook in a long, long time. The recipes from this book that I have tried (about a third of the book so far) have turned out the first time - no tweaking or perfecting required. It does require a little more planning and organization to put a meal like this together, but it's been totally worth it for us to have economical, healthy, and really yummy lunches for my husband to take to work. It does help that the author puts an organizational timeline with ever...more

I've been looking forward to this book for ages - I'm an avid reader of JustBento.com and have recently started to make my own bento lunches.

The recipes inside are beautiful to look at and look yummy. There are time lines for some of the bentos so that you know what task you have to be doing at any particular time and there are other options provided for substitution (if you don't like cabbage in pies, there's a spinach and cheese pie recipe there also).

Looking forward to creating healthier and...more

Not just great for bento box users. I have increased amounts to make family meals and stocked my fridge with lunches we can eat cold or reheat. This would also be good food for a picnic.

Recipes are not too complicated and don't require too many ingredients. I did have to buy some sake and mirin, but at least I have used them over and over. I didn't have to buy a bottle of mirin just to put one tablespoon in one recipe and then have the almost-full bottle sitting around my kitchen wondering what...more

I really enjoyed this cookbook. The recipes are simple and explained well. There was also a good foundation given for making bentos that lent itself, very well mind you, to the alternative options available. The possibilities for many different combinations are many. The one caveat is, it would have been nice for her to explain more about proportions that are used in what makes up a bento. This information is missing from the book but is provided on her website. Overall a nice addition to a cook...more

Bento!

Now that I actually have a job where I get this break in the middle of the day called a lunch, I found I wasn’t quite sure what to do at lunch. Stop working. Okay, I can try that. Eat. Yes. But what are all these interesting lunches eaten by everyone around me?

We’re not just talking brown bagging it here. We’re talking Mom-stamped, balanced and varied, healthy lunches including salads, yogurt, fruit, soups, lunch entrees of all types. Mom lunches, made by moms used to making healthy lunch...more

I've always been fascinated with Bento Boxes and enjoyed eating them when I could in restaurants. I like the idea of them and eating healthier, so that's why I picked up this cookbook. The author is very good at explaining to those of us who aren't Japanese the equipment used in bento making, a glossary of terms and most helpful of all, a planning chart for each recipe about how long the entirety of the bento will take. That is my biggest concern as I am not a morning person and trying to throw...more

I loved this book and hope to start regularly making bentos in the new year. I think my favorite thing about this book is that there are vegetarian alternatives for each bento shown. Without that, I don't know how useful this book would have been for me. This book and Itoh's websites are fantastic resources for people who want to learn to cook Japanese.

good balanced lunch plans with preparation timelines as well as packing instructions and links to bento supply sites. many recipes have several variations. sadly, having just finished my field season i won't be needing packed lunches for 6 months and will have to wait to try out the recipes.
Sasha Strader
Some fantastic recipes in here with clear directions, specific recipe amounts (both the ingredients to use and the amount of finished product you can expect from the recipe) I'm still not sure what "massage the cabbage" means, but otherwise everything about this book is fantastic.

Healthy and simple packed lunches, a step up from the lunches I've had in the past. Everything is quite simple and laid out in a clear format. Also, it has complete lunch ideas, and of course, the companion website is also filled with tidbits and new things.
Lindsey
Love this book. Great recipes with numerous options to mix and match, realistic portion sizes, and detailed explanations of techniques and ingredients. An excellent place to start for both healthy lunch options and an introduction to sane bento boxes.
Nina
My all-time favourite cookbook!

I love bento and this book has a great variety with easy-to-follow instructions, timelines and useful information on ingredients and "how to fill a bento box".

Autumn
Lovely, clear, inspirational book for the beginning bento maker. Can also serve as a handy treatise on cooking for one. And it answers the real question on everybody's mind: how the hell do I make these and get to work on time?
Jason
A great resource for yummy meals. No reason to not use these recipes everyday. Don't limit yourself to getting this just because its a bento book. Lots of useful yummy recipes in this book! I borrowed it from the library but will have to buy it because I know i will be going back to it over and over!
Kate
A very cute book, full of excellent presentation ideas for packed lunches. Unfortunately most of the recipes contain sugar, and so aren't things I want to try.
Matimate
Fine tips for Bento maniacs, but some recipes are little bit off due lack of ingredients in local stores.
False Millennium
A charming book, including Americanized bento boxes. So much better than Taco Bell for lunch.
Christine
The layout is cluttered and not organized for easy reading, but the recipes seem simple and tasty.
Eliza
Beautiful pictures and layout. I wish there were more meat dishes. Not a fan of meatless meals.

I picked up two Bento cookbooks for the library and this is the healthier of the two, a nice clean book with a lot of ideas for quick bento lunches that will hopefully put a smile on many afternoons!
