Cattleman Bran Turner (Bran, really!?) is left shorthanded during calving season and since rural Wyoming and in particular the sleepy town of Muddy Gap doesn’t have an overabundance of qualified help he reluctantly hires Harper Masterson for the job. Now while this down on her luck, former beauty queen may not look the part of your typical ranch hand (the gem encrusted sunglasses and leopard print gloves are a dead giveaway) Harper proves to be a quick study and more then capable of gettin’ er done.

What starts out as a strictly a professional relationship of course builds into something more; Bran just can’t keep his eyes off Harpers curves and she in turn doesn’t mind getting down and dirty. He can’t believe that this gorgeous beauty queen would have anything to do with the likes of him and Harper well, she can’t believe what she’s been missing, who knew sex could be so good.

Besides there’s no harm done right? They’ve both agreed that this is only going to be a temporary affair, just until Bran’s injured help returns and Harpers younger sister Bailey graduates high school. A few weeks tops, then she’s outta this dusty little town, and never looking back, right?

If you’ve read any of Lorelei James’s other books (I highly recommend the Roughriders series) then you’ll know what to expect from this one. Erotic love scenes, emotion filled storylines, a couple of dustups at the local saloon and a whole town of unique characters and situations to keep you interested.

I have to be honest though, this book didn’t quite grab me like her Roughriders series always does and I was honestly surprised at how difficult a time I had getting into it. Neither of the main characters made much of an impression on me until later on in the book (which ended up being awesome) and I just never felt their supposed “spark”. And while the sex scenes where certainly steamy enough they lacked genuine emotion or even excitement of the usual level I’ve come to expect from James. It just seemed like our couple was going through the motions (sexy as they may be) and I had a hard time caring.

However like I said at around chapter 16 it all seemed to come together. With the ranch job ending, Harper is leaving, Bran’s not stopping her and nobody is talking about how they really feel. I also enjoyed the storyline involving her sister Bailey’s bombshell decision and *sigh, Bran’s last minute attempts at romance. For such a strong silent style he sure came out of his shell. Interesting events also open up for book #3 in the Blacktop Cowboys series; Wrangled and Tangled.(less)

I'm conflicted about this book. Objectively, I'm pretty sure it's a good example of erotic romance and a couple exploring beyond "vanilla" sex. My ratings are subjective, though, and I can't say it was more than just "okay" for me. I found myself skim-reading the sexytimes to get back to the plot. Unfortunately, I thought the plot itself was rather bare-bones and couldn't hold my interest enough.

I initially liked the characters a lot. Harper, the surprisingly down to earth and friendly beauty queen, began as a super sympathetic character, but then I found myself squirming that she was TOO easy-going and doormat-ish, letting her family ride roughshod over her and taking such a submissive role in her relationship with Bran.

Bran was a cute and laid-back cowhunk, so it surprised me when he was all dominant and alpha in the bedroom (and the living room, and the dressing room, etc...) This aspect of the book was okay... Again, I don't know why, but I found myself skimming over the numerous variations of their having sex. I guess I just didn't feel any emotional connection between the two, which was reinforced by their entering into the relationship as a purely sexual one, thinking there was a predetermined "expiration date" that would occur when Harper moved away.

I also felt that Bran was using this sexual relationship to explore his kinky side, and it wasn't like Harper herself was special and brought that out in him. Rather, I got the impression he was just waiting for a "willing victim," if you will (sounds terrible, but that's what it seemed like to me). Generally, Bran would have been a decent character until Les (his curmudgeon of an up-til-then-injured ranch hand) entered the picture. At that point, I couldn't forgive Bran for not sticking up for Harper when Les bad-mouthed her.

That said, I'm not writing off either erotic romance or this author entirely. I think I had some issues with believing that Bran and Harper fell in love with each other, given that the extent of the relationship that we're shown seems to be mainly physical. I'm interested in reading Abe and Janie's book, though, because I feel the romance aspect might be more believable when the characters have a long history behind them already. (less)

She works two and three jobs to keep her and her sister afloat, but can never catch a break.

Bran is a real cowboy, raised by his grandparents, richer that the whole county, but afraid to let anyone too close. Bran has hidden his real self for so long because he believes his just isn't good looking and interesting enough to keep a gorgeous woman around unless she were to find out about his money. Bran goes out of his way to live on what he makes ranching, and spends even less than that!

Without a second job, Harper is desparate. With an injured ranch hand, Bran is working double shifts. Celia, Harper's only friend in Muddy Gap, suggests Harper work for Bran. While the first day is a test, Harper and her hard working grit earn her the job. Bran is actually impressed with her and as the two spend time together, their mutual lust that has always simmered just below the surface, boils over.

I loved these two together and their mutual exploration of where their passion can take them. I loved Bran's dominant side, but I also loved when they switched it up and other times were just plain kinky (a dressing room scene comes to mind)...be warned, the one backdoor scene was totally unnecessary and I skimmed over it.

I can't wait to read the next one...Abe and Janie are sure to be explosive. I love a jealous ex who hasn't yet finished what he started...and I love when they tell their women that they haven't finished with them yet! Janie has waited 8 years for Abe to claim her, I hope he isn't a day late and a dollar short!(less)

Gosh.....what can I say about this book that I haven't said many, many times already? This was a re-read for me because I love their story so much. I laughed (fainting goats) and cried both times I read it. I don't think I'll ever grow tired of it. Bran and Harper are one of my ALL TIME favorite couples. Bran epitomizes the strong, sexy, gen-u-ine cowboy!! He's stubborn and pig-headed and half the time I wanted to strangle him, but he has soooo many redeeming qualities it's hard not to fall for...more

I found this one to have a rather slow start, but it got better and better, and the ending was so touching I even cried a little bit.It's very HOT, too. Blond heroine- dark-haired hero, and I would so much like to read more about blond heros, but that's just my preference. (But hey: I'll definitely check out "Wrangled and Tangled" for Renner Jackson's story :D). Alright, no hedging, I just straight out liked this book. It helped to assuage a bit of my current appetite for Western Romances.

Two things to point out about the hero and Heroine:

*Bran Turner wasn't my type of hero, but I liked that the author showed his vulnerabilities and mistakes, in bed and out. In the bedroom, I thought the encounters between Bran and his HEA, Harper, were sort of hot, funny, and ..well..REAL. Bran makes two hiccups that are no-nos and I suspect would make the female reade

Two things to point out about the hero and Heroine:

*Bran Turner wasn't my type of hero, but I liked that the author showed his vulnerabilities and mistakes, in bed and out. In the bedroom, I thought the encounters between Bran and his HEA, Harper, were sort of hot, funny, and ..well..REAL. Bran makes two hiccups that are no-nos and I suspect would make the female reader cringe and want to KO him with an upper cut and hard jab between the knees, but Harper handled him.

Harper Masterson falls for Bran, her boss, with no wiles, no chases, and no stuck in her head drama (mainly). She is characterized as a beauty queen by necessity who has a strong sense of obligation to her sisters and an insecurity that doesn't impair her to the point where she is incessant about it. She is practical. She isn't afraid to work hard and humbly refusing to cater to vanity and sex in order to define herself.

What can I say? This was an erotic western romance that made me believe in the characters, even believe a beauty queen could work as a ranch hand, while giving me some intimate/bedroom aerobics that were as interesting as they were adequate. Sure, they weren't the hottest, but the sex "fits" for this particular couple.

The setting of Muddy Gap (What a name for a Wyoming town!) and great secondary characters helped more to make this an enjoyable book. I listened to the audiobook of this. Though I'd tried one of Lorelei James' Rough Riders books, I didn't finish it...don't know why, but after listening to the audio of Saddled and Spurred, I have a renewed interest in this author.

Harper Masterson needs a job. Unfortunately, the only one available is the ranch-hand. Now, to some people that would be the norm, but Harper has some issues:

1. she never really worked on a ranch so she doesn't exactly know what to do (of course, she is a fast learner so that shouldn't be a problem)

2.fainting goats, enough said (I loved that scene, it was so funny)
3. and the most important thing - her new boss, Bran.

I liked this book a lot better than the first in the series (Corralled), but there was something missing. There was lots of hot sex, but it seemed clinical in some weird way. Also, the conflict felt distant. There was a lot of potential conflict, but it never amounted to much. To say that Bran isn’t happy about the situation when Harper shows up is an understatement, but he decides to give the former beauty pageant queen a chance and surprisingly, he’s not disappointed.

But working all day with Harper is making Bran crazy. He’s been attracted to her since she was younger and being with her is not helping him keep his mind off of her body. Eventually the two fall into a sexual relationship – but only in the off hours so there’s no hanky-panky on the job. This works out well for both but neither one of them are being truthful about their feelings for the other and when it’s time for the three months to end the shit hits the fan in both of their lives in a big way.

The characters:

I really liked Bran and we get to know him somewhat but I never felt like I was thoroughly getting to know him. Some issues were brought up - as in, how he felt that he wasn’t good enough for someone like Harper or his issues with not having gone to college – but they were never explored in more depth and I was sad that they weren’t. I think I would have liked to have gotten more into Bran and his life – besides the one he had on the ranch or with Harper. I did love how Bran didn’t take one look at Harper and write her off as unable to do the job as ranch hand. He willingly let her work the job to see if she could handle it and I loved his faith in her.

Harper – she was such a strong character but she was a mess. When her mother had taken off for parts unknown and left Harper to take care of her younger sister Harper had totally stepped up to the plate and had worked her tail off to provide for Bailey. But in doing that she had denied herself her dreams and had planned on continuing along that line indefinitely. She really was smart enough to have figured everything out without having to have the proverbial smack in the face, but she didn’t and that bothered me. I think it bothered me because she was so smart about everything else. I guess, though, that we always can see things on the outside better than we can see things in ourselves internally.

Now, that being said this was just a fun book. Bran and Harper’s sex life definitely never lacked in the sexy and incredibly hot categories (well, except for that once. Lol). The book had all of the wonderful trademark James writing about incredible cowboys, remarkable women and strong family ties and I will definitely be reading the next book in this series when it releases.

I love it when I’m right. I just knew, even though these new Lorelei James book aren’t part of her fan-fave McKay series, that they’d be just as good, just as hot, just as emotional, and I’d get just as immersed in them as I did those previous books. Needless to say, I was right on the money. Of course, that’s not difficult because we are talking about Lorelei James here. She delivers every book, every story, every character as real as life can get every time.

I even like this book more than the...more I love it when I’m right. I just knew, even though these new Lorelei James book aren’t part of her fan-fave McKay series, that they’d be just as good, just as hot, just as emotional, and I’d get just as immersed in them as I did those previous books. Needless to say, I was right on the money. Of course, that’s not difficult because we are talking about Lorelei James here. She delivers every book, every story, every character as real as life can get every time.

I even like this book more than the first, Corralled. And that’s saying something, because Corralled is a damned good book. Ms. James is one of the best at writing emotion, especially from the male point of view. You have to meet Bran Turner. He’s a smoldering, sexy, and somewhat vulnerable cowboy who captures your heart right away. He’s blindsided by Harper when she shows up on her doorstep after a mutual friend recommends the perfect person to temporarily take over his injured hired hand’s position. Having been attracted to Harper when she was just 18, you can imagine what his reaction is like now since she’s grown into a more confident and independent woman - all of which came to her much too early when her mother left her and her younger sister behind for a man, with no thought to her daughters. But Bran is in desperate need for the help and Harper is in desperate need for the money, so he reluctantly hires her, knowing it’s probably the biggest mistake he’s made in a long while.

Harper has given up everything in her life to work two and three jobs at a time to take care of her younger sister, even going so far as wanting to leave Muddy Gap to set up house wherever sis decides to go to college. She’s tired of being compared to her booze-guzzling, man-eating mother, so much so she’s conducted herself in a spotless, very appropriate manner as much as possible, but then even some folks in town still believe the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Thus the reason for her willingness to take on a ranch hand job - even though she knows nothing about the position - the other businesses in town wouldn’t hire her if she’s the only one left standing.

Because Harper is eager to learn and puts 100% into the job, and because she’s as curvy and beautiful as he remembers, Bran softens toward her, they develop a good working relationship, but he also wants more from her. Harper does her best to keep her feelings under control, but eventually they’re both lost to the lust and chemistry that zings between them. They attribute their hunger for one another to the fact that Harper will be leaving town in a number of weeks. Of course, the closer that time nears, the more they realize they don’t want to be without each other, but they leave that particular communication out of the relationship until it’s nearly too late. Up until that time, however, they have fun together and the loving between them spirals into intense, unadulterated passion that knows no bounds.

Everyday life and jealousies do interfere here and there and they confront those issues head-on, until Bran’s old hired hand recuperates enough to re-enter the picture. He stirs up a hornet’s nest every chance he gets. And Bran lets that get to him, his vulnerabilities coming to the fore with a vengeance, letting Harper get away from him and going crazy with anger at himself for being such a fool and worries over her, not knowing where she is and what she’s doing. What Harper’s done in the meantime to get over her exasperating, sexy man is finally take care of herself and not everyone else first. It’s a long time in coming, but it feels oh-so-good when she finally embraces that freedom.

We also get to catch up with the characters we first met in Corralled, and we get a closer look at Celia and Kyle, who, if my guess is correct, will be featured in the next book in the series. I sure hope I’m right on that score, because these two will be explosive together. But there’s also Abe and his ex-wife, Janie, so I may be off the track a bit and they might be next. There’s so much to still happen in this Blacktop Cowboys series!

No B & B’s for this little place. Former local beauty queen Harper Masterson (love the Name) has a drunken skank for a mother that ran off and left her to look out for her younger sister, Bailey, who is a Senior in high school. The oldest sister, Liberty, is enlisted in the Army and currently stationed in Afghanistan. Momma Masterson ran off with some local putz, pissed off everyone in town, leaving Harper strapped for friends and employment choices. She holds down two jobs to support herself and Bailey, who is supposedly going to college in the Fall, and Harper plans to move to wherever Bailey goes to school to supply her younger sister with monetary and moral support. When she gets axed at the local tanning salon because of slow business, Harper is understandably distraught. Like a ray of light her best friend Celia calls in Harper’s time of woe, and gets an earful of sobs. But Celia has a devious plan for her BFF…….

Bran Turner is a rangy local cowboy who owns a modest ranch outside of town that he inherited from his Grandparents. He runs it himself along with his old and grumpy right hand, Les. When Poor Les has a little mishap with a bull, rendering him useless for a few months, Harper shows up at Bran’s door, ready to make some cash, mend fences, and start birthin’ some bovine babies.

We all know that chaos ensues at this point.

Bran is Proud. Bran is Cocky. Bran is kinda Sweet. Bran has a serious case of foot in mouth disease. Seriously, this guy has no filter, but you love him anyway. He says whatever he thinks and is a little rough around the edges. Unlike most Heroes in our beloved romance novels, Bran has a little insecurity about his appeal to women-especially this woman. He is in constant awe of Harper’s beauty and more or less sees a glowing aura around her at all times. I have to say this is kind of a new aspect for a hero and frankly very refreshing. Usually, it is conveyed that the main Male character of a story is very confident about his looks, and of course his sexual prowess...it hints at vulnerability if he is not. I feel like most Authors shy away from this, thinking that a man cannot possibly be “The Perfect Alpha Male” if he is at all insecure or shows any vulnerability before the big “fall” in the book. I disagree. Ms. James let him be a little unsure of himself, and therefore more relateable. I’m not saying he is a wimpy limp noodle or, gasp…Beta. He is just more humanized.

There was a lot of give and take between Harper and Bran. He wasn’t weak and neither was she. They both wanted to be worthy of each other, and had genuine love and affection, not just lust. Their banter was hilarious and is current with the times. Since Lorelei James herself lives in the Dakotas, you get the feeling she is pulling from some of her personal experience. I love that she can walk the walk and talk the talk. We learn all about ranching alongside Harper because of this. I always feel the best books are the ones were you feel like you’re living inside the story, and Saddled and Spurred delivers that to the reader in spades.

And we can’t talk about a Lorelei James book without talking about the Luuuuv scenes. In my opinion, this book and its predecessor, Corralled, are not as erotic as the Rough Riders series. Saddled and Spurred is very, very, hot, but the love scenes didn’t feel like as much of the focus of the book as some of James’ previous novels. To me, the scenes could possibly be a little disappointing to readers familiar with this Author’s other series because I would describe them as just a little kinky, definitely not vanilla, but maybe more like butter pecan…..however the love scenes are still great and consistent with James’ style. I personally felt nothing was missing. She has all the Wild West infusion and the periphery of characters that we will come to know and love just as much as her beloved Rough Riders. I can’t WAIT for the next book in the series, Wrangled and Tangled (Nov 1, 2011).

This is the second in Lorelei James’s contemporary western series called Blacktop Cowboys. The first was Corralled and some of the characters are featured in Saddled and Spurred. However, Saddled and Spurred can easily be read by itself.

In this enjoyable western, Bran Turner is a rancher down on his luck in a depressed area of Wyoming. His only ranch hand suffered an injury during the busiest time of the year and help is no where to be found. That is until his friend’s younger sister plays a trick on him. She offers him a worker to assist him but Bran is startled to find it is the super feminine and sexy beauty queen Harper Masterson. Bran is torn, he needs a hand desperately and Hare is certainly easy on the eyes. But can she actually help?

Harper desperately needs help. She and her sister are stranded in this poor town when her mother up and left, leaving behind a scandal and some serious town resentment But Harper wants her younger sister to graduate before they get out of Wyoming for good. However, in this small town, work is difficult to find and her she has just been let go from her latest job. In a fit of self-pity, she bares all to her best friend who tells her she might have work for her. But Harper really has no idea what is in store for her or how much this job will change her life.

This book was a pleasure to read. The author really gives the reader a feel a small western town down on its luck. She also delves into Harper and Bran’s personality so they felt like real human beings. I also liked how Harper slowly adjusts to the fascinating world of ranching/farming and begins to really appreciate it. Bran is a hardworking, modest guy who you can’t help liking. Compared to the first book, I think this book goes more into the relationship/dynamics between the two main characters. While it still has some very steamy scenes, I would say it doesn’t quite have as many as the first since the relationship between the main characters starts slower.

Saddled and Spurred is an emotionally satisfying western. Readers who love westerns will be sure to appreciate this wonderful romance.

In every one of James's books there is not a single sight of anything less than a spectacular man, especially if they are part of any type of rodeo circuit. I went cowboy hunting at a rodeo or two and let me assure you that is not what I found. It was more like what I imagined a bowling league on horses would look like. Very disappointing to say the least.

This story also gives us a few glimpses of a female barrel racer. Tomboy who loves the circuit and is struggling with no one seeing her as a woman. Sound familiar? Yes, yes it does. It is all starting to blend and mush into the Rough Riders series isn’t it?

I really love Lorelei's books, but this time there were a few scenes that were just ick. Several times our main cowboy lost all rational thought and behaved like a complete douchebag, and not in any typical smutty way. It was kind of weird and really didn’t fit in with the character at all. Everything would be pretty linear and then you would have this huge spike of out of character behavior before going back to where we left off.

Another perk of this series is that since everyone is not related their names don't all start with the same letter, therefor it eliminates the need to keep a flow chart of who is who. Which is wonderful.

To be honest I read these books for the naked scenes but I stick around for the town and family gossip. I always end up pretty roped in to what is going on around the town. It's like getting to be a fly on the wall at the town's beauty palor.

What a fabulous book! I have never read any of Lorelei James' books, but, being from ranch country in Texas, the cowboy theme to this one appealed to me. It did not disappoint. This was a great book and I think that I am hooked on another new series.

I also didn't understand the actions of Bran and Harper. Apparently Bran had not acted out his "raunchy side" with his other lovers. Why did he want to let it all hang out with Harper? Was it because she was blond and had large breasts? And he thought of her as "innocent" with little sexual experience. Almost like a virgin. Why is it that romance authors want the woman to be a virgin and untouched? I've never been able to figure this out. James also went to a great deal of trouble to paint Harper as not being slutty. Is something wrong with women having as much experience in the bedroom as men? And why would Harper want to enter into this kind of kinky relationship with Bran when she had little sexual experience. It surprised me that Bran and Harper knew how to perform such kinky sex when apparently neither had done this before.

Bran was very demanding re: sex but what I thought was he was very bossy. Geese, if I was Harper, I'd feel like saluting and saying "yes sir, right away sir." I don't understand why women give over their power in the bedroom. It is also very erotic and pleasurable to be the one to take control and give pleasure to one's partner. The one time Harper did take control she did it because she was angry and it was more of the same old same old. What Bran was teaching her in my humble opinion didn't make great sex. Where was the sensuality, the feeling of love and caring? After a while, all the sex scenes got boring, they seemed too clinical, like there was a marathon they had entered. I didn't get the feeling these two people really cared about each other.

One more issue. Bran could be very polite because he was raised by his grandparents but every sentence he spoke it seemed had the word fuck in it. If you're going to be a character in a book, at least have a wider vocabulary.(less)

One of the things that I like most about Lorelei James' books is that she is such an adept world builder that I actually enjoy how she weaves characters arcs throughout a series and that the introduction of numerous new characters and plots does not overshadow the excitement of the central romantic relationship.

She excelled at this skill in Saddled and Spurred.

I think this is my fav of Lorelei's books. The love story was so sweet and the characters made me laugh, cry, and evrything in between.

Best LJ book ever, even beating my favourite of her Rough Riders series - Cowgirl Up and Ride. I can't put my finger on every little thing that made Saddled and Spurred spectacular except to say that each aspect of it was quite simply perfect.

The hero - Bran - was hot, hard-working, gruff but not rude, caring but not sickly sweet. He wasn't overly Alpha but still permeated a strong, silent type of vibe.
