Holy shit but this is a depressing read... half-way through the book (the entanglement). I don't have issues with the writing or translation. Find both interesting. But damn... the plot, the character... poor poor Fak. I wouldn't wish his misfortune on my worst enemy... well, yeah, I probably would. Maybe I need ordaining.

"We don't know where we come from. From the moment we are born, we have to struggle to survive, and when we die, it's all over. We never know where or when we die, and we don't

An excellent book, but a very depressing one that sheds light on the ugly truth in Thailand that is the caste system. Yes, there is one, its just not poigent in countries such as India, but we have one non the less. As someone who is Thai and was born and bred there I understood that completely.

Though I got through คำพิพากษา (or 'The Judgment' in the English translation for you non Thai-readers out there) realively fast, as its only a small book, I found it almost impossible to finish because e

An amazing story coming out from a simple personality of a school janitor in a village tucked in Thailand's outback. Fak, is the son of Foo, a carpenter who sought refuge to a temple and live on the monastery's yard in a simple thatched hut. Fak grew up to be a novice but decided to disrobe since he couldn't help to see his father worked his butt out.

To sum the story up, Fak is victimized by the society, a little village near a monastery. Especially after he's taking care of the deranged Somsong

it's been very hard for me to put my finger on things in this book for a variety of reasons. living in thailand, a good bit of the behavior and tradition in the book makes enough sense to me, but i feel unclear about authorial intent, and i may have qualms about the translation (which comes across as so simple as to not be flattering; which may have a direct bearing on the questions of authorial intent).

the primary confusing elements are centered on the simplicity and aloofness of the main chara

I just do not know how I feel about this book. The version I read started with an introduction from the editor that ended up as a cliff's notes version of the book, including completely ruining the ending. I think it really took away from the story knowing how it would end. Not only that the editor mentions that the translation made many changes in the style and I think I would have preferred to read it as is.

Having said that, the story is presented in a very simple manner and is quite depressi

If I have to recommend just one Thai book to foreigners, this is the book. It is very sad. The writer's books are always sad, though.

This book is all about the way we judge people around us. A very good person could be turned out in a bed person just for our bed judgement. A kind and decent person could be turned into cruel and indecent person just by bed judging him. So, please think before judging anyone, especially when you are judging him negatively.

Incredible good story but very dark one.

Book is well written with a calculated neutral delivery, but is hands down the most depressing novel I have ever read. I shudder to think that humanity in general is even half as judging and discriminating and hateful as described here.

Painful, hurting and extremely realistic about the small village mentality. How the "strong bullies the weak, and the weak bullies the weakest!" Read it when you have the guts to absorb it.
