The Emperor of Nihon-Ja (Ranger's Apprentice #10)
In his brief time as an Araluen warrior, Horace has traveled the known world and fought countless bloody battles. All for his country, his king, and his friends. For all that is right.
When Horace travels to the exotic land of Nihon-Ja to study the Senshi fighting technique, it isn't long before he finds himself pulled into a battle that is not his - but one he knows in his...more

John Flanagan always amazes me. He is a very talented author. There are very few series I would read to the very end if they had more than five books. Until now, the only author series I've read that have been longer than five books are Harry Potter and the first twelve books of The Secrets of Droon. My point? For me to read a series for this long and be willing to read more, the author has to be pretty darn good.

Dear Mr. Flanagan,
A heartfelt thanks for sharing the world you created and populated with some of my all-time favorite book characters! You did the series justice with this tenth book. I particularly loved the parts with Alyss and Evanlyn! They came very close to stealing the show, which I absolutely loved.
Does this really have to be the last one?? What are your plans for the future? Any thoughts of writing books that tell us about Halt as a young Ranger's Apprentice? Or are you going to branch...more

Here we have another entry in the Ranger's Apprentice series. This is an excellent YA series (some volumes are better than others) and I'd recommend it. Some say this is more a series for boys than for girls but I disagree. Even if it started that way it has grown to include the "love stories" of both Will and his best friend and this book was pretty much split in half. The stories of Will and his male friends is half the story while the tale of Alice and the Princess' adventures is the other ha...more
I liked all the books in the series. This one was the one I liked the least, and I had to remind myself a couple of times that I am not the intended audience, my tween son is. It is a perfect book for boys of that age. Brief mentions of romance, but detailed descriptions of weapons and war tactics.
The girls are silly in this book. Females seem to be rather inferior beings emotionally...interesting. They have their courageous moments etc. but it is quite incongruous to see their pettiness. Just...more

I’ve been reading the Ranger’s Apprentice series, written by John Flanagan, for the past two years thanks to my good friend Kara. This is the final book, The Emperor of Nihon-Ja and I spent the entire night reading it, instead of going to bed. Haha.
I don’t think I’ve ever done a book review for this series because I’ve always been relatively impartial about it; it’s an okay book for me. Not something I would buy myself each time it comes...more

A man by the name of Arisaka is planning to over through the emperor of nihon ja and they have to defeat his army with limited numbers.
as i have stated in all of my other book reviews on this sires the time and place contributes a great deal to the story and could not be different any other way.
the protagonist in this story is surely the emperor he is a kind man but does what is needed when the time comes almost like a stone wall rigid still.

I thought this book was awesome. It never really had a dull moment where I just got bored reading it. The battles were very well described and the map of the battle field befor the battle also really helped visualize it better.
Favorite part- My favorite part was the final battle between the Emperor, Will, Halt, Horace and their followers and Arisaka and the evil Senshi. This battle is really well described and it was very intense the whole time. At the start of the battle you already assume that...more

This is the last book in the rangers apprentice series i was extremely sad reading because i knew there was going to be no more to read after it. The characters n this book are Evanlyn or the princes of Aurlenan, Will a ranger, Alyssa a diplomatic representative, and halt the old mentor of will, Horace childhood friend of will and knight, Emperor Shigeru the emperor of Nihon-Ja where Horace has gone to train and finally Selethen a Arridi leader

The Rangers Apprentice series have been one of my favorite series. In John Flanagan's tenth novel in this series, The Emperor of Nihon-Ja, was the final war. Horace was sent to Nihon-Ja for a mission for the king. He was going there to learn their fighting techniqes and get to know the Nihon-Jan people better. The Emperor is betrayed by one of his own leaders and has no choice but to flee into the mountains.

I am afraid to say that I was, in fact disappointed. After the first few chapters I new the basic outline for the plot, which to say the least pretty much follows the plot line from the previous books. And by the time I finished I wasn't even happy it say that I figured it out before the ending. I was looking forward to this book in the hope that it would end with a happier note than what I felt when reading the two previous books before. Making Halt a run away prince with a twin brother reminde...more
So another new country, but this time it is on the other side of the world. We see the Skandians innovating with ship building, we watch Evanlyn and Alyss resolve the last of the love triangle that was never capitalized on, and (my favorite) we get a brief suggestion that perhaps this is not a look at Medieval Europe, but maybe a futuristic European result. I know, I am stretching it a bit there, but it is possibilities like that that add dimension to a story, IMHO. (I base that off of the comme...more
Tenth in the Ranger's Apprentice fantasy-adventure series about Will Treaty and his mentor, Halt.
The Story
The core group has split up. Horace and Gregory have gone to visit the Emperor of Nihon-Ja while Alyss, Will, and Halt are in Toscana reviewing Toscan troops and negotiating a treaty between Toscana and Arridi; Selethen is there "to negotiate a trade and military pact with the Toscan Senate".
Unfortunately for Horace, there seems to be more ill will towards the emperor's plans than anyone had...more

This was a great book. I don't know if it is the last Ranger's Apprentice or not, but if it is, it ends on a very good note.
We basically get a taste of Japanese culture here. In some ways, greco-roman military themes and japanese samurai/bushido ideals were simplified to the point of losing what made each great, but it had to be done to appeal to a YA audience and so that the plot could advance. This is a novel after all, not a comparative on military types.

Hm. What to say.
Well, I think this series is absolutely brilliant. Seriously. The beginning of the first book may seem a little childish and trite, but it honestly picks up. A lot.
Anyway, now that I've established that I'm a fan of the series, I'm gonna say that I honestly wasn't very impressed with this book. Maybe it's because the others ones had shot up my standards of John Flanagan or maybe it's just because it really isn't very good.

I am a fan of this series. I can truly say that all of the books have been great, exciting, and have moved along. This book however, didn't keep me reading like the other books. I enjoyed reading it, but found myself putting it down and picking up other books because it dragged a little for me. I still like the series and will read the next ones when they become available in the states. I have really come to know the characters in this series. It seems as if Horace and Will have literally grown...more
Horace is visiting the country of Nihon-Ja to learn new fighting techniques. While on this mission, he has developed a father / son relationship with the emperor. While returning from the summer lodge, news arrives that a rival has mounted a rebellion against Shigeru, whose crime has been to try to extend equality to all the clans under his rule. On the run from the enemy, Horace decides to lend his sword to the emperor's defense. Together with a small retinue of loyal retainers, they head into...more

The land of Nihon-ja has been mentioned a few times in the Ranger's Apprentice series -- a sort of fantasy version of Japan. And "The Emperor of Nihon-ja" takes us right into the heart of this distant land, with John Flanagan's usual mix of action, humor, clever plotting and slightly-altered versions of real-world civilizations.

by now i was a great fan of the rangers apprentice series. i had fallen in love with almost all the characters(except Alyss, i HATE her)and so i was miserable that this is the last book. while not the best book of the whole series it was still pretty good as it had all the factors that made me enjoy this series. it had adventure , a good plot which was well executed , humor, the good-natured bickering between Halt, Horace and Will and above all an epic decisive battle.

Enjoyed this one more than the last couple in the series. I liked the discussion of different tactics and the Roman legions vs. Samurai tactics.
Plenty of Spoilers here:
Of course, it has gotten a little silly that these English Rangers have now united vikings and Bedouin tribesmen to fight Samurai usurpers of a peaceful, progressive Shogun. This after negotiating peace with the Roman Empire. But that's just kind of what you expect in this series. Super Rangers to the rescue!

Amazing. Sucks that this is the last book. I know thatthere are 2 more but they are 20 years into the future and them looking back at other missions. This series couldhave 110 books.
Good thing about this book.
1. Fast paced:Page 40 the Emperor and Horcace get attacked by the senshi.
2. Theme: I like the Japan kind of theme for this book because it brings a different kind story. The furthest they have every been away from Araluen is Arridi which isnt very far.

I've read the whole series and I'm sad to see this wonderful series come to an end. This is the only book my brother has willingly read and my mom has even read the series. My favorite characters are by far Halt and Will.
In this last book, Halt, Will, Evelyn, and some other friends travel to the Japan like country of Nihon-Ja to help Horce who is helping the Emperor take back his throne.

The last book of this series which i ended somehow reading first before the earlier books just because it was on the kindle. I will miss this series because it was one of my favorite series to read besides percy jackson series. I think this book although had plenty of action series i like and another journey about a land similar to samurais. This book also shows me about women's courage to do battle against beasts men were afraid to do. I like how in the end the princess and horace the knight de...more

In the book Rangers Apprentice #10 by John Flanagan, the main character Will has to defend the Emperor of Nihon-Ja from a rebellion lead by Lord Ariska. Will, his former mentor Halt, and the Emperor embark on a journey through Nihon-Ja to find the mythical fortress Ran-Koshi, only to find that it is just a valley with very tall mountains on all sides. They decide to set up camp there any way and they train the local, and very loyal, inhabitants to fight Ariska and his men. When the final battle...more

I am finished reading Ranger’s Apprentice Book 10. I have now read every book in the Ranger’s Apprentice series. All of them have been equally great and the leave you in suspense. One part which was when Will’s battle strategy worked perfectly was very interesting. In a lot of the books they take people with no formal training in battle and turn them into experts in a few weeks. The only thing that was strange about the book was it left a gap between book 9 and 10. It didn’t explain how Horace g...more
Yeah! This last book got back to what I liked about all the other books in this series with the exception of #8 and #9. Those two were still ok, but simply on principle I don't like innocents in peril for a younger reading audience. They weren't discriptively gory or anything like that--much more tame than "The Hunger Games", but I dont' recommend "The Hunger Games" to 11 year olds. Again, it was purely on principle that I had qualms about 8 & 9.

Here's the thing about this book. It's a fantastic adventure story and fits the rest of the series perfectly. Horace takes center stage and has a chance to shine and some of our old friends come back to make an appearance (including the Vikings!) for this last great adventure. And that's just it...it's the end of the series. If the series was continuing on I'd give this book 4 or 5 stars, but because it's supposed to serve as the final chapter (yes other books may be written, but everything says...more
