The New Kid is so over the top with cliches that it is up in space, orbiting the moon. I knew coming in, after reading my friend’s review, that the book would be full of cliches. However, knowing it is one thing, reading it — experiencing it — was another. It was a head-tilting-back, eyes-popping-out type of experience.

Wow, this book was terribly cliche, I had to skim most of the middle. I am really glad I did because the ending, oh the horrible ending.

Let's meet Will Hunter the main character who is a super secret 16 year old. He is super rich, super smart, and is a super bad ass.
Will is also super humble, super nice, and super shy.
Um, what?
Yes we have a male version of the Mary Sue, is there a name for them?

This book was started a lot differently than I expected a definite surprise to what the usual normal. From the beginning it was action packed and very page turning. The author seemed to take the time as well to go more in depth about the character they were creating and the world in which they were choosing to unfold before me. I found myself hungry to know what was going on and when the next incident would put things forward I also never saw some of the twists coming that I expected but then there was also that one thing I never thought would happen when he actually lost his best friend Rudy to the demons and not the girl. I was surprised to see that for once the female character in this book was not the usual helpless damsel in distress and helped in every way possible. The hero as well was not without his own flaws and small downfalls keeping it very realistic especially seeing as his mixed background . In the choice to keep some fun of the story to myself what I mean by this means you need to read the book to find out.

The new kid is about a young man named Will Hunter. He has grown up his whole life looking for his father and trying to figure out what all it meant the night his father was taken from their home and he was left with nothing more than a book and a promise to his dad that he would not open it till his 13th birthday only one minute after midnight. It was after this Will learned his true identity or so he thought and the purpose he had in this world. Using his very high intelligence to supplement his mothers income without her knowing and keeping them moving about the united states he is picking up where his father had left off and trying as well in hopes to find who and where his father has been kidnapped too.

The author has definitely created a very nice series and I can’t wait to read more. Looking forward to picking up more books within this series and I hope that you will enjoy the read as well as I have too. (less)

What I like about this book is the plot. We have a boy who is a teenage demon hunter. How cool is that? Plus along the way he finds a very cute girl and a sidekick. Although things don't always seem what they are, he fight for what is right. Will Hunter has know since his thirteenth birthday who he is. That's really 3.5 stars. This book was fairly interesting. Will Hunter's story takes on a different view of "Demon Hunters", very different in fact from Cassandra Clare's "Shadowhunters". I loved this book. Having no idea what I was reading, I got a little confused at first, but then, it got much better. I have to admit that I was worried, reading from a boy's POV. Although, the book is in third person, much of the focus is on Will. And being in Will's mind is such an experience! I never knew that boys were so thoughtful, so caring, so efficient. I loved Will, every single part of his personality.
Temple Mathews has created a lot of supporting characters, and i liked all of them. April, Will's mum, is hiding something, but she is also caring. Natalie is an intelligent, head-strong girl, she is like a copy of me. I loved the growing attraction between Will and Natalie, it was so sweet and believable.
If you want to have the roller coaster ride of a lifetime, with so many twists and turns that will leave your head dizzy and your heart racing, then The New Kid is you new favorite(less)

And even when there were some chapters that really remind me of the other story, halfway through this book, the story took its own course and I deeply enjoied it.

The book is told from a third person point of view, that’s why the story switch between Will and the other characters in the book, which lets the reader to get to know what is happening in the minds of each one of them… I just loved when an author doesn’t focused in just the lead character, but allows the other characters to have their spotlight for a while, and if we add that Temple Mathews has a very easy way of writing the events of this book that made me finished it in just a few days, because Mr. Mathews’ writing style is fun and juvenile, and has the exact amount of necessary descriptions in it, which turns this into a face passed read.

And the action, this book is full of action scenes, where Will becomes this kick ass ninja guy that can dispatch a twice larger demon than him with just a twitch of his pinky, besides, all those demons where so ugly that in my head I was like “O.K. now is not the best time to have a hyperactive imagination”, but I still enjoyed reading all those scenes. But I’m still kind of sad because there weren’t a lot of romantic scenes and I was looking for those scenes, but I still have hope for the sequel ;)
The only thing that didn’t get into my head was the fact that Will moved all over the country, chasing demons, and his mom was convinced that it was because of her work and had nothing to do with his little baby; is just that I know that moms have this sixth sense when it comes to weird things that their kids are doing (I should know, been there, done that) , but Will’s mom just acted like everything was normal and Will just drag her around with him like an old piece of furniture… I don’t know, it didn’t feel right for me and I really hope all this will change in the next books…

And now, let’s get to the characters: I really like Will, he’s this kind of bad boy that doesn’t want to accept his bad boy status or his good looks, which is kind of cute in a guy, and with all that, he has a great personality and a really sharp tongue that he lashes with a lot of sarcastic comments (I just love that in a guy!), but he also has this soft spot that makes him really vulnerable and lovable, which makes Will an imperfectly perfect boy!
Natalie was kind of plain and sometimes I wonder if she was lacking common sense, but I really liked how she turn up at the end; she’s not wonder woman or anything like that, but the girl knows the place where she’s standing and will fight with teeth and nails for the ones she love ;)

The New Kid is an interesting, fun and dark book, that nestle between its pages a story that made me turn page after page at an erratic peace, and didn’t let me go until I reach the end, and end that let me grasping for more, wanting to know what will happen next ;) Temple Mathews delivers an amazing debut novel that can be enjoy for kids and adults alike, and I highly recommend it! The New Kid took me by surprise!!! I really wasn't sure what to expect. I knew the synopsis sounded intriguing and I was looking forward to reading it but honestly didn't psych myself up about it. Refreshing and very old school, Temple Mathews' The New kid brings back the norms of before. How we saw evil, high school and demon hunters. Yup you heard right this is the story of the new Kid, Will Hunter. Super genius, he has been hunting demons for a very long time. Battling them city after city, but this time, this might be the one. The one where Stan aka Lucifer aka The Dark One is finally defeated. The truth however comes out at last and it is definitely not something Will was expecting at all.

Very refreshing and a fast read. Will Hunter is a very interesting character to read about. A pretty face and so much more. This demon hunter is one to watch out for. Then there is Natalie, the interest, a distraction at first but a later girlfriend and a beacon in the dark for Will, she becomes his confident and his ally against the fight with the devil himself. A very sweet chemistry there, the one that balances out the seriousness of this book.

And my God! The climax was just so edgy. Will hunter may be accustomed to being a new kid by now, but the action and the game changing climax was just amazing. Simply brilliant job Mr. Mathews.

Will, is the New Kid in high school AKA Harry Potter/Percy Jackson/Jimmy Neutron/Jack Templar/Timmy Turner/Vladmir Tod/Daniel X/ and all the other teen/preteen boy heros who have some sort of superpowers and save their families/friends/and the world because the adults are too stupid or incapable of saving themselves and the world.

Natalie is not your average teen either. Her twin sister has been missing for a long while. Everyone thinks that she died after accidentally drowning in the river one night, but her body was never found, and Natalie knows that she is still alive somewhere. Sometimes she even thinks that she is sharing her dreams with Emily.

Will an Natalie are now about to come up against something evil, something that kidnapped Will’s father, and kidnapped Natalie’s sister.
But what is Will really? And can he really hope to save both his father and Natalie’s sister?

The book starts off with lots of hints that Will is not your average teenager, but no hints as to what he actually is. Is he a secret agent? Is he working for the government? Is he an alien? Is he a spy? We don’t know, what we do know is that he’s got money, weapons, and intelligence, as well as some kick-ass fighting moves, we just don’t know why.
Hints are also dropped as to the fact that he constantly has people following him, and that his family have to move around so much because of him. The principle also comments on how disaster seems to follow Will, as it seems that (like buffy the vampire slayer) he seems to have a habit of burning down school buildings and stuff.

When what Will is is eventually revealed, it turns out that he doesn’t even really have a reason for being special; he just believes that the heavens made him that way so that he can rescue his father?! I found all of this quite unrealistic and unbelievable. I mean we’d all like to be super intelligent, physically superior, and rolling in money, but the odd workout and wishful thinking isn’t going to make that happen for us!
There were also quite a few other ‘as if!’ moments (as I like to call them). I just thought that a lot of the ideas were too far-fetched, and Will was possibly just too good (with no apparent reason for his brilliance).
The big revelation at the end of the book was just really a step too far for me as well. (view spoiler) Totally cheesy, overdone, and even slightly cringe-worthy (sorry), although younger teens probably wouldn’t feel this way so I’ll give the author the benefit of the doubt here.

This book is recommended for boys age 12-16, and I suppose this might appeal to kids that age, there’s action, there’s excitement, and there’s also getting one over on the school bully, but kids aren’t stupid, they’re going to spot these little flaws too.
Overall; action and excitement, but the hero is a little too perfect. Most suited to young teens.

While I like the concept of Will Hunter, nothing surprised me. I wasn't diappointed, I just wasn't moved. I didn't fall in love with the character, push for his victory or want to be in his shoes, and could care less about his love interest and the frustration of the pursuit of fruition. With that said, there were very likable elements, especially the neat gadgets and fast cars. Love the video game aspect too. BORING! I wanted to like it but was put off by the fact that this author feels the need to tap into what he thinks young people say and how they act. Give it up because you are so wrong. Especially that a 16 year old person is not going to call someone an a..hole. They would use the whole word. The New kid there has been many new kids in school and Will Hunter is not an ordinary guy. Will is a demon hunter trying to get revenge on the Dark Lord (the Devil) for killing his father at age eight. The story continues. Okay I'll admit it: I was at the book store and I had enough for one book. I couldn't choose what to pick and didn't see anything I wanted, so... naturally I picked the book with a cute guy on the cover. Only I hadn't realized how creepy this book really would be. It was "Ok" through out most of the book, but nearing the end it started to just weird me out. I finished it, but don't plan to ever pick it up again. I DON'T recommend this book to anyone.
Heed my warning... DON'T READ THIS BOOK

What do I think? I think I got confused somewhere. This started off rather humourous, but as I got toward the middle of the book, I just couldn't read it anymore.

What the hell was going on? This is what I understood about the plot...

Will was some Demon hunter that was after a particular Demon because said Demon kidnapped his dad...right? Right. However, this particular Demon was after some crazy weapon/device to take over the world, that Will was now in possession of...right? Right.

So, first of...more What do I think? I think I got confused somewhere. This started off rather humourous, but as I got toward the middle of the book, I just couldn't read it anymore.

What the hell was going on? This is what I understood about the plot...

Will was some Demon hunter that was after a particular Demon because said Demon kidnapped his dad...right? Right. However, this particular Demon was after some crazy weapon/device to take over the world, that Will was now in possession of...right? Right.

So, first of all, you are not told much about anything. You have no real idea as to why Will is where he is, how he got there, or even what he is. He has all this money...where did he get this money? He has all these gadgets...that I assume he got with this money that came out of thin air. He invents and builds weapons...with materials that come from where? Where did the knowledge to build these weapons and skill to create them come from?
Some book has something to do with things, it's like a coded bible of sorts, that explains the lives of ancestors doing the same thing as him. What were they doing? There is no backdrop to this story. But there is a major information dump that really tells you nothing at all.
Supposedly, Will has never had a friend since he was 8 years old. Miraculously, he makes two at this new school. He is so cool and collected and smart, that he was able to be spied on by them and ends up giving them a tour of his secret space. What the fuck?
He then goes to some hazing thing for football and gets his ass handed to him, and is saved by his new friends. Afterwards, he tells them everything about his life, even though he has only known them for maybe two days, and has never told anyone else before. How does this make sense? It doesn't!
There is no real sense of time in this book. What felt like perhaps a few days, amounted to the idea that it was supposed to be longer, maybe even a few weeks. I couldn't follow the timeline. It was rather nonexistent.
Don't get me started on the pathetic attempt at romance...yeah. No this book was horrible. I am not sure how it was published.

When reading a book, I expect there to be a plot. I expect there to be character development. I expect there to be subplots that fall in line with the original plot. I expect there to be world build up. I expect there to be explanations to the crazy shit going on so your book makes sense. I expect there to be dialogue that flows. All this should come together to create a reading experience where you are engrossed in the story, and completely forget you are reading a book.
This book encompassed none of those things. (less)

Just finished The New Kid by Temple Mathews which I got from Netgalley and I enjoyed it. I will say that normally paranormal isn't something that I gravitate too and this was actually the first book that I have read which dealt with demons so I didn't know what I was getting into.

I have to be honest and say that I truly did not have high expectations for this book. I can’t really explain why. I hadn’t (and still haven’t) read any other reviews of it, but it definitely exceeded my expectations.

It was a nice change of pace to read from a guy’s perspective. I know they’re more prevalent than they used to be, and I’ve been reading The Chronicles of Nick series, so it’s not like I’m unfamiliar with reading from a guy’s perspective, but female leads still dominate the YA genr...more
