Outcasts: The Penikese Island Leper Hospital 1905-1921
Between 1905 and 1921 a group of outcasts lived together on a small island off the coast of New Bedford, Massachusetts. They came from many places, united only by the diagnosis of leprosy. Thirty-six patients were eventually sent to the leprosarium on rocky Penikese Island; fourteen are buried there. Outcasts by poet Eve Rifkah is their long-forgotten story.

You must read this book. Cast out of society because of their disease (and without the means to be treated at home) this small band of souls, from all over the world, made lives for themselves on tiny Penikese Island, off the coast of New Bedford. While WWI and the flu epidemic were raging they were isolated from it all, with news coming to them by way of the newly acquired telegraph. An amazing depth of research went into these riveting poems.
