This novel was fantastic, it was wonderful, it blew me away! After I finished reading it, I wanted to read it again... something in the story just really got to me. If I had to describe it I’d say it’s like Pretty in Pink meets West Side Story. It’s obvious that Elkeles did her homework with this one. The gang dynamic is terrifyingly real. I will admit that initially I was worried. I didn’t think there was any way that she could spin a character that’s a gang member to be likeable, a hero even. I mean when I think of gangs, it’s drugs, drive-by’s, you know extremly shady things, how can that be appealing at any level. And yet Alex was. He was a “good” guy, he was that tragic hero.

And Brittany, her character was even more complex that I think the novel even revealed. She seemed so real, it felt like I knew her, or someone like her. And despite the apparent differences between the two characters, they were so much more alike than I would have ever guessed. It still seems impossible and yet I’ve seen it!

The chapters are alternated between Alex and Brittany, and I was so happy for that. I loved being able to glimpse into each of their heads and really understand what they were thinking and how they were effected by each other. Had the story not been told that way, I don’t think I would have enjoyed it as much. I think that is what won Alex over for me, because I got to see how he struggled with the life that he didn’t want.

Elkeles writing was so smooth.... like butta. It just flowed right of the page, it was like I wasn’t even reading... I was there. I was Brittany, I was Alex. It was powerful. *goose bumps*

On the surface it may read like a love story but there is so much more going on. It’s a story of life lessons. Don’t judge a person by the color of their skin, don’t judge a person by the way that they look, talk, where they live.... I could go on. But I’ll stop there, and leave you with the recommendation to pick it up.

I LOVED this book!!! Perfect Chemistry is an urban story of star-crossed lovers from “different sides of the track” – Brittany Ellis, from the "North side", a picture-perfect rich girl who is captain of the pom squad (ie. a cheerleader), and bad-boy Alex Fuentes, from the "South side", a member of the Latino Bloods Gang.

At first, I wondered how I could fall for a gang member, but Alex totally stole my heart. The fact that my Alex Fuentes, while I was reading, looked like Steven Strait in my head didn’t hurt either. ^_^

I was drawn into this story from the beginning and spent an enjoyable weekend reading it. I felt a connection to both Alex and Brittany, who wear masks every day and hide their true selves and fears from the world. But behind those veneers are two people who are struggling in their own worlds, and they find they have more in common than they thought. What starts out as a forced seating arrangement in a Chemistry lab turns into so much more, and starts an elemental change and pull that neither of them can resist. They must fight expectations, duty, prejudice and other chains that drag them apart.

The story may be one that has been told before, but it is how Simone Elkeles paints the story of Alex and Brittany through a blend of both their perspectives, with what I feel are very authentic voices, that brings an honesty and depth to the characters, and thus, the story. I loved how each chapter alternated between Brittany’s and Alex’s POVs and yet the story flowed well. I couldn't help but feel immersed in their world and to care about what happened to them.

I loved Alex's friends, Paco and Isa, and Brittany's sister, Shelly.

The scene near the end left me in tears, and there’s a violent scene in here that was very difficult for me to read because it brought back the pain of a violence that touched my own family’s lives. As I closed the last page, though, I was left smiling and actually wanted the epilogue to keep going.

Alex and Brittany will hold a very special place in my heart.

This is the first book I've read by Simone Elkeles and I look forward to the sequel, Rules of Attraction, and reading other books penned by this author. Definitely HIGHLY recommended!

I am not in love with Alex Fuentes. I do not want him. I don't think about him all the time. My stomach does not flip whenever I read about him. I don't think he's beautiful. My heart doesn't skip a bit whenever I read him.

This was so good! Yes, it was insanely cliche, unrealistic, and would never happen to two teenagers in real life. We all know that. Some high school kids are too messed up to fall in love. However, Elkeles made it so believable. These types of books are weaknesses of mine. You know, the whole two high school kids who first hate each other, then fall deeply in love. I finished this book in two days, glued to it while in my bedroom. I laughed my buttocks off, felt heart-broken, felt betrayed just like Brittany. I felt everything for the characters.

At first, I hated Brittany. The I'm-so-perfect facade she pulls off really angered me. I was Alex, hating her for being fake and perfect. Then I slowly began to feel her pain. I began to know her and understand what she does and why she does it. And damn, can that girl love a guy! I have to admit, she's got strong intentions. She has passion. She's determined. Lucky Alex. However, sometimes she annoys me. She's so... I feel like she needs to hear, "I love you. I love you" from Alex all the time, just to make sure he's in love with her. Calm down, gurlfran.

Oh, Alex. *sighs* Again, I have a fondness of bad boys!

I have an autistic sister. She's not as mentally disabled as Shelley, but she has her problems. I wish I could be as understanding and warm as Brittany was. I get really impatient with my sister. I feel horrible. That was a personal connection I had with Brittany. I felt her pain. I felt her sorrow. The sub-plot regarding her and her sister was so touching. Shelley and Brittany were so different, yet had such a good understanding for each other. I loved Alex even more when he understood Shelley and treated her like she was normal, unlike that bastard Colin. I hated his guts. What a pathetic excuse of a man. Want to know a real man? Guess? Take a wild one!*grins*

Anyway, obviously, this story is ridiculously cliched. You know? Two kids in chemistry class hate each other, then realize they're not so bad, and fall madly in love. However, the most magical thing about this book was that I didn't give a damn. I mean, the author put so much thought into this, so much passion. To be honest, a lot of things are cliche. It's how you write your story that matters. How will you execute it? What's so different about your story? Elkeles definitely has my respect for that.

I loved how the romance slowly developed throughout the book. It seemed so natural. Nothing made me go, "Come on! You guys just had to bump into each other everywhere." It didn't annoy me.

Overall, I loved this book because of how it made me feel about so many things. Alex, Shelley, the pressure from parents, etc. It was so truly understandable. (less)

I'm just not the right person to read YA books. Even though I'm technically the target audience for these (me being a teen and all), I've found that I just hate 90 % of them. Even most of the ones other people seem to like, I hate. So if you're a person who doesn't dislike super cheesy writing and a million clichés, this book will probably be a fun read for you and you shouldn't let my bad review keep you from reading it.

I really only read this book because so many people on Goodreads seemed to love it. Otherwise I would have never in a million years picked it up. Reading the back of the book in the bookstore, I had my doubts about it but I still wanted to give it a try.

I can easily sum up the problems I had with this book: The cover is cheesy, the story is cheesy, the writing is cheesy.

Now of course the cover wasn't an actual factor in my decision to give this book a 1 star rating but I'd like to say that, had I looked at more closely before buying it, I would've been able to at least expect a cheesy book.

The story is what bothered me most because it's obviously been done a million times before. I generally wouldn't mind if it had been a good version of the "good girl falls for bad boy"-type story. The whole Latino Blood gang stuff and the rich people factor just made this book more ridiculous because that way they also added the "poor guy falls for rich girl" and the "oh no my parents will dissaprove"-drama. So that was pretty stupid. I also hated the random spanish that was used in every single sentence in all of the Alex chapters. It was just overused and made me cringe a lot. I sometimes also didn't really understand what he meant and they never really explained it but I figured it's not actually important to the story so I stopped trying to understand it eventually.

I don't wanna get too into it but the Latino Blood gang thing had me rolling my eyes every single time they mentioned it. It was just SO over the top and the type of cliché I couldn't even imagine a writer using before I read this book. As soon as it was mentioned, I knew this book would not be one I'd end up liking.

The writing was also completely cheesy. (I'm really sorry for using that word so much by the way but I can't find any other one that fits.) Instead of showing us how the character feels, the author kept talking about it. It got to the point where I got angry as soon as a character mentioned feelings in any kind of way. It drove me crazy. Super cringeworthy.

Speaking of cringeworthy moments, there were a lot of those in this book. Brittany's unrealistic and clichéd parents, the fact that the author added Shelley to make Brittany seem less 'perfect' and give her a reason for it all, Alex's dad who got shot during a drug deal, Brittany being a popular girl with the perfect boyfriend who doesn't make her happy, Alex taking an interest in her because of a bet, ... I could go on because the entire book was a total cliché in my honest opinion and those tend to make me cringe.

I sincerely hope the reason why people seem to love this book so much is not "Alex Fuentes is hot and dangerous" (Ke$ha reference not intended). I didn't like it at all and had to force myself to keep reading after chapter 5.(less)

While I appreciate Simone Elkeles attempt to write a story with a lovely "moral" I can't help but point out that there aren't any in this book. I don't support the explicit language and although I know by my daily junior-high life that teens actually talk like this, and 10 times worse, why encourage cursing? It's quite a nice Romeo and Juliet type of forbidden romance. Alex Fuentes is an outsider, a gang member, and his kind and Britney's do not mix. Britney is the most popular girl in school, very pretty and a cheerleader (of course), it always seems in these types of scenarios it's only a matter of time before she gets fed up with her squeaky clean world and falls for a bad boy - which is what happens. But the whole thing is such a cliche.

A cheerleader and a bad boy... it's Grease except the male love interest is Mexican, but the ideas are generally the same. The story is very predictable and therefore quite dull, despite the fact that there is definitely chemistry built up in the book. There are some fairly hot, if not very descriptive, sex scenes that set the book apart from all the other cliched teen romances - this I liked. But it still didn't make up for the extreme lack of originality on the author's part. There was also the usual (and annoying) displays of self-doubt and insecurities that seem to go hand in hand with romance novels.

I know it'd be no fun if they got together in chapter one, but why do they both always have to start questioning themselves. Especially seeing as sometimes it's blatantly obvious that the other person likes them, they couldn't be sending off much stronger signals if they came out with a banner saying "I'm into you". Are we really expected to feel sorry for Britney when she's checking herself out in a mirror and complaining about her faults? This is a girl who we are repeatedly told is Barbie come to life: perfect figure, perfect skin, hair, teeth... sorry, but the pity isn't there.

The thing is... the book is really... cute. But I'm tired of Ms good girl cheerleader meets mr bad boy gang member. That's why my rating is "it's ok", I wouldn't go as far as to say I actually liked it.

Brittany Ellis is your typical high school cheerleader. She’s blonde, she’s pretty, she’s popular and she’s dating the high school quarterback. They are the Golden Couple and everything is ribbons and curls. Though behind the scenes, the perfect mask falls apart quickly. It completely shatters. Alex Fuentes couldn't possibly be more different from Brittany. As your typical bad boy, he causes trouble everywhere he goes. He’s a gang member and thinks he’s tough shit. So when Brittany and Alex are forced together to work on a chemistry project for the entire year, you just know it will be interesting, for they have both met their match. You know shit's gonna hit the fan when Alex makes a bet that he can get in Brittany’s pants. Little does he know he’s about to fall hard for Little Miss Perfecta. And she for him.

This stuff has been written so many times, mostly in movies, but for some reason this worked out so well in book form. Everyone knows that you shouldn’t fall for bad boys. They're trouble. Yet I just cannot resist Alex Fuentes. I have stepped on the Fuentes train and am swooning all over the place. Yes, that is a puddle of drool right there. I'm not even sorry. Alex was handsome and funny, tough yet soft, not to mention very sexy and I just wanted to curl up in his arms and let him whisper Spanish words in my ear. Also, I love the name 'Alex', so that helps. I can’t say I wish I was Brittany Ellis, because she was seriously fucked up, but it was a very nice love story and it had me smiling from ear to ear.

There is only one thing that I can complain about, which is that I had to get on the computer and turn on Google translate every time there were Spanish words or phrases (which was a lot). I had two years of Spanish in high school, but I barely understood any of it. Other than that, this book was perfect. And cliché. And perfect. I’m torn. Damn you, Alex Fuentes. ~~Take me~~(less)

Most of the people I know who have read the book did like it a lot, but sometimes even one or two negative opinions can be enough to scare me off if they're strong ones.

Maybe it was because I knew my fair share of guys similar to Alex (and dated a couple) by living in a neighborhood similar to his. A lot of the things that happened in the book (including the scene where Alex wanted to leave his situation) are things I've witnessed firsthand, unfortunately.

Even the strange use of Spanish and random slang didn't seem all that bizarre to me. It reminded me of when I lived in my old apartment complex and how some of my friends and neighbors were so used to being around only their close group of friends and family, that when they spoke to me it was almost as if the two languages were intertwined and formed one entity of its own. In this book's execution it might have come across as a bit clunky but I'll give this a pass.

My bigger issue was how one moment Alex would sound like he was hard and the next he would sound almost girly. Then again, we were in his head when he was feeling emotion, so maybe I'm a little too hard on the transition. He wasn't off character when he was speaking to others. What we project to the world and what we actually think/feel can often be different things.

I have experienced some of what happened in this book (even down to sitting at someone's bedside in the hospital), and some of the insight into gang life wasn't too far off (if romanticized a bit). The author may not have hit every single detail dead on (but then again, I've never lived in the Chicago area, so I'm guessing there could be cultural/location differences from the west coast), but she gets an A for effort.

I'm not going to criticize someone who is willing to write the stories that don't always get written. Should we expect authors to stay in the safe zone and keep everything wrapped up nice and tight in a little predetermined box?

The story was good. The characters were not cardboard cutouts of every other character I've read. The solution was not easy or a copout. Alex did not get off the hook for his choices. I like that.

This was a love story for fans of unconventional love stories. I'm not embarrassed to say that I really enjoyed this one.

The epilogue was completely unnecessary though and should have been left out. It added nothing to the story. I haven't checked to see if it ties in to the next book, but even if it did, I don't think I'd need that scene.(less)

Rarely, when it comes to YA novels lately, am I truly and wholly blown away. I've read more "blah" books than I can count on one hand and have used just as much--if not more--as kindling.

I think it's fair to say that 'Perfect Chemistry' isn't an original story. We've read superb stories of star-crossed lovers before. Ultimately in Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' and of course 'West Side Story'. But this didn't matter to me. In fact, after the first two chapters I was hooked.

I AM FLOORED that I enjoyed this YA Romance as much as I did! I found myself unable to resist turning the pages.

I am such an emotional wreck, I blame it on Simone Elkeles!!! She does this to me with each book I read. I will finish and then feel depressed or emotional for days! But it's the fact that it gets to me so much that I sit there and cry, even when the ending was pure bliss-perfect. She always has a way of making you feel. You feel for her characters in every book. Every situation. You feel thier love. You feel their sorrow. You feel their fear. You feel their pain. You feel their happiness. You just feel. And it's not something every author can accomplish with with their readers. (Jennifer Armentrout and Simone Elkeles are a rare few) Elkeles is absolutely amazing with her stories that I always feel I'm front and center watching it with my own eyes. I read her books and the world falls away. The Leaving Paradise series(I guess it's not really considered a series with only 2 books) but it left me in tears for days after reading it. The characters touched my heart so profoundly that I was lost in their story all the way til the end. It didn't change at all for this awesome book! Perfect Chemistry was....well perfect! Now, I shall get on with my review before I lose all senses.

This book takes place in Fairfield near Chicago, Illinois. It's about 2 teenagers from very different parts of the tracks. Alejandro, better known as Alex (or Sexy mexy), is a gangbanger trying to protect his family from the dangers lurking around his homelife. He has alot of secrets and his life is anything BUT perfect. Brittany on the other hand has it all, she's a very popular cheerleader(who is captain of the Poms squad) with a hot boyfriend of 2 years who is a football player (go figure) and has great friends. But on the surface she is no different than anyone else. She tries to keep a Perfect front to everyone outside of her home. Her sister has cerebral palsy and her parents are lacking the whole parenting part, though they lead everyone to believe they are the happiest and most perfect family around. It's not the life she's always wanted. Things get a little interesting when Alex and Brit are paired up as partners to work together in a Chemistry project. They can't stand each other and, they both realize how both of them are so different. Alex makes a bet with his friends that he can get Brittany to sleep with him before Thanksgiving. Being friends or anything less than acquantances, if even that would be so catastrophic for their reputations and would only show Alex her real life she is not yet ready for anyone to see. But overtime, things start to sizzle as Alex realizes, she's not as different as he thought. As they spend more time together they start to understand each other more and their chemistry is undeniable. Can they survive the judgements from friends and even strangers?? Can they see each other as more than chemistry partners or would it ruin their perfect/not-so-perfect facade they put up for show?

Okay, so originally I wasn't going to read this. A friend of mine read it and didn't like it at all. We have very similar taste in books so I figured it would be a waste of time. So I decided to toss it aside and instead read Leaving Paradise. Wow, I instantly fell in love with Elkeles' writing style. It was amazing! I read the second book and loved it even more. I wanted more of her writing...more of her books...more of her characters...more of her beautiful stories that made me feel everything. So after many reviews raving Perfect Chemistry and MANY demanding friends, I decided to give it a try. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED! Simone delivered a phenomenal story yet again that touched all the way to my soul-and other places. I was so happy I took a chance on this book, I would have missed out on such an emotionally awesome rollercoaster! And I LOVE rollercoasters!! Also, I couldn't help but notice how similar this book was to the movie Crazy/Beautiful, which was one of my favorite movies from years ago. It made me love it even more!! I loved that this book was in alternating perspectives! We got to see both Brit's life unfold as well as Alex's past and fears for his future.

The character dynamics in this were incredible. I loved seeing the different sides-the North side and the South side-so different yet also similar. I loved Isa (Alex's friend), she accepted Brit right away. She never judged her for being who she was. So bittersweet. Sierra, who was Brit's best friend was not accepting of Alex at first but she came around and she made me smile. I enjoyed her character and seeing how she changed her views. She was just looking out for her best friend. *sigh* Paco, Alex's best friend. Oh dear Paco, why??? I loved him the most of the secondary characters. He was just. Amazing. Kind. Sacrificial. Oh God, it pains me to think of him. *SOB* Okay, I really can't say anything else my eyes are watery...the water works will start. Mrs. P, their chemistry teacher was the kind of teacher everyone should have. She believed in Alex, she felt he could change...for the better, for his future. Oh Mrs. P how I loved thee. If I ever had chemistry, I would want someone like her. She. Was. Awesome. Carlos, Enrique, Luis, Shelley (Brit's sister)....you are still amazing, don't ever let anyone tell you different. I feel your pain as if it was my own. You were such a trooper all the way til the end. I wasn't too fond of Brittany's parents but they came around. And Mrs. Fuentes, might I say your son is like the epitome of HOTNESS and SWEETNESS-total bad ass mix!!! Thank you for producing such a SEXY MEXY!!! Mmmmmmmmm! Hector...I hate you. I wont say much but you're a bastard and got what you deserved!!!

Brittany, I loved her. She was an awesome main character. She puts up a perfect facade to hide her real life and true self from everyone because her parents expect her to be the perfect daughter since her sister is disabled and can't do what normal daughters can do. Haven't we all done that in our lives? Afraid we will disappoint those we care about when they see we are not perfect, so we act perfect just to appease the world? Yes, I am sure alot of people have. It's not easy being popular, especially having a selfish douche bag boyfriend like Collin. Oh he got under my skin, I wanted to beat the crap out of him. He was the typical arrogant bastard only after one thing and when he didn't get it, Brittany was a bitch in his mind or whaaaaaa, she changed. Whaaaaaa, she doesn't love him, whaaaaaa he's gonna cry like a little bitch because his friends have all had sex already and his girlfriend isn't ready to put out. Whaaaaa whaaaaa whaaaa. Ugh! Sorry, for that whining but geez, he pissed me off. Brittany held her own and I was quite proud of her for seeing Collin for what he really was, especially when she finds out he cheated on her over the summer. What a douche! Drop him girl-you deserve better! And she did. She was able to be herself around Alex because he was not disappointed at how different she was, he was more relieved and happy that she wasn't really plastic like he originally thought. She had feelings, a hard life, and made mistakes. She wasn't perfect, and Alex loved her for that. *tear*

Alejandro. Alex. Hot sexy mexy. What can I say?? I instantly fell head over heels in love with Alex!!! He was not perfect and I liked that he wasn't afraid to show his true side even if he got shit for it. Okay, yea he was in a gang and most people would frown upon that. However, if they knew his past and his childhood, they would totally understand him better. He made me cry so many times, he was so vulnerable and so sweet. He was just an ordinary kid trying to get by in life. His sexy Latino speaking self was everything a guy should be (minus the gang part, but what the hell). He was HOT HOT HOT HOT and I mean HAWT!!! Gawd he gave me chills all the way down to my toes. He effected me as much as he effected Brittany. I couldn't blame her for falling in love with him. He didn't judge, at least once he got to know a person and see them behind their protective walls. He loved his family and friends (and boy did he have alot of family), they were pretty close. He would do anything to protect his brothers from their gangbanging fates. I saw how destroyed his life was since he was a kid and man I felt nothing but sympathy and anguish for him. His fate was nothing but scary for him.I can see the choices he made and why he had to make them. But nonetheless, Alex Fuentes is definitely at the top of my list of sexyy boyfriends-along with Daemon. Oh yea, he's that AWESOME! Now I can't wait to read the other 2 books about his brothers-mostly because Alex is in them!!!! He will always be my favorite Fuentes brother!! *SWOON SWOON DROOL*

Okay, now that I've written a novel of a review...I am going to add that despite the graphic contents this book had, it was worth the read. I was so glad I went for it. It shows that you just gotta read it for yourself and make your own assumptions when you're done. I will from now on not base how good a book is by its cover or whether a friend likes it or not. But I will take a chance on my own pretenses. Yes, it had sex in it (and damn it was graphic, though I've seen worse) but I loved it!!! I LOVED IT!! I loved the language, yes there was alot of cursing-but hey that's me!!! I curse like a freakin sailor. I'm not perfect and I never pretend to be. That's why I LOVE SIMONE ELKELES!!! She is real in her books. This is real life and her books portray nothing but that. BRAVO SIMONE, BRAVO!!!! I'm sorry if people disagree with me, but that's your perrogative and I don't judge you for not liking something that I do. It's your right. This is my right. AND I AM PROUD OF IT!!!! WHEW!!!! I love that this book makes me feel free to say what I want. Because dammit I live in a free country-freedom of speech baby!!!! Bottom line, this book isn't for everyone. But for those that loved it-AND TO THOSE THAT CONVINCED ME TO READ THIS, THANK YOU!!!!!!!! Okay, now my hands hurt so it's my cue to stop now. I hope everyone learns a thing or two from this book. I know I did, and one thing I learned was don't be afraid to be who you are because of what others might think. BE REAL. BE YOU.

I didn't buy the ganglife in this book. It felt as though a woman was daydreaming about what a gang members troubled life would be like, but it was a bit too soft. Keahlian meramu cerita dan menghidupkan karakter dari Simone Elkeles menurut saya berperan penting dalam kesuksesan novel Perfect Chemistry yang berlanjut di buku 2 dan 3. Sampai buku ini berhasil saya tuntaskan dalam waktu beberapa jam saja.

Penerbit Terakota mengambil langkah jenius menerbitkan buku ini, sudah pasti laris manis dan covernya juga bagus! Saya lebih suka versi Terakota ketimbang aslinya, lebih manis terlihat, walau dari cover aslinya lebih mencerminkan kategori Romance Teens. Sexual intension sangat terasa di beberapa bagian sehingga ada baiknya buku ini dibaca oleh remaja yang sudah cukup umur :p

Satu kekurangannya, saya kurang suka dengan epilognya. Ini pendapat pribadi saya saja loh, yang seakan-akan dengan epilog, pengarang menggiring opini pembaca ke fase 'happily ever after". Sama seperti saat membaca epilog Harry Potter. Rada-rada ga penting, tapi balik lagi itu kalau menurut saya. Masalah terjemahan sih, kualitas seorang Angelic Zaizai tak perlu diragukan :) Good job, Zai!

That's probably the best word to describe my feelings after reading this book. This book has everything, it made me laugh, cry, curse, I was angry, happy, relieved. I like a lot of things about this book I'll just say few.
Firs, I like writing, Spanish words especially. I'm not fluent in Spanish but those words made me laugh. I imagined Alex saying them and that Mexican accent. I had(or better say i still have) clear pictures in my head.
