I read the majority of this on the plane ride returning from Fresno, over the Sierra Nevada and Rockies.
MacFarlane is a young Brit, raised in exclusive schools, exposed to mountaineering through his grandfather and the schools. He's climbed extensively, on many of the world's most challenging and obscure peaks.

While I would recommend this book to hikers and climbers--people in love with mountains--it is peculiarly unsatisfying. The premise is interesting (construct a cultural history of the various aspects of our fascination with mountains, including their temporal aspects, their remoteness, their height, the risk they require, etc.); the book is very well written, with many memorable passages; and there is an enormous amount of interesting information. This book not only helped me to further understand my own fascination with mountains and mountaineering but also helped me to see the landscape and the pursuit in new lights, only furthering my love for mountains.

Maginificent. Especially the last few chapters on Mallory. But there are 50 quotes I would grab and hope to use in the future. A man after my own mind.
