This book has more than 10,000 references in the bibliography ! Such is the power and approachability of the self-organizing map, plus the 20 or 30 years that it takes for an academic advance to catch on in many fields. Kohonen's idea is simple, understandable, and useful, and this book does a good job of explaining the theory and the practice. However, the lack of an explicit loss function has made this approach less relevant for me lately than it was initially.
