I had to read ch 4 and 5 for my religious studies course at school.

Chapter 4 argued a very interesting point of needing personal opinions and experiences in religion, though the long time belief is opposite. But, religion is so objective and personal to me I am shocked (and not shocked) that before, the less religious you were, the better religious scholar you were. This is a collection of Rita Gross's essays from across her career; the book also includes a fascinating introduction by the author. I haven't read all of the essays yet, but the ones I have read were well-written, informative, and quite useful.
