Rabbit runs home, frightened that there is a fox chasing him in the dark. He makes it home safely, but then he hears a Rat-a-tat-tat! at the door. Who could it be? It’s a duck who is also being chased by the fox and needs a safe place to be. Rabbit lets Duck in, sharing his burrow, blanket and bed. But just then another knock comes at the door. This time it is Mouse. Another knock and it’s Lamb. All of them scared of the fox in the dark. And then another knock comes at the door. This time it’s t...more

Little Kid Reaction: My kids LOVED this book. I thought it would be scary or too long, but they selected this as one of their favorites each evening. My 2-year-old's attention span did not stay more than 5 pages into the book, but I was able to paraphrase other parts of the story for him. This book is probably better for ages 3.5 years and up.
Big Kid Reaction: I liked the story, and I liked the illustrations. It is a story that has been done in other ways before, but it's still a good read. The...more

Frightened Rabbit makes it home just in time--because there's a fox in the dark. But then various other animals want to hide out with him, they're taking up his bed space, and there at the door--is the fox!
But it's a baby fox, as scared as they are. And when mom arrives, mother love trumps natural instincts and everyone snuggles down for the night.
Sweet story where for once the fox is NOT the villain, and the rhyming text and illustrations are both terrific.

This is a hilariously warm adventure of animals fleeing from The Fox in the Dark. Rabbit, duck, mouse and sheep all end up together in rabbits hole in an attempt to escape what may or may not be chasing them in the dark.
The rhyming rhythm will keep your heart racing as the story climaxes to ultimately a small fox knocking at the door looking for shelter too. You will have to read the rest of the story to see if a bigger fox comes knocking as well.

Because we (and the children we read to) have been conditioned to see fox and wolf characters as the villian, this will keep children on the edge of their seat waiting for the "attack". Spoiler: it doesn't come. Rabbit, Duck, Mouse and Lamb all cower for security in Rabbit's home for fear of the fox. Rhyming flows naturally for a readaloud and full-page illustrations add to the potential for a storytime book.
This could easily be done as a prop story with puppets/stuffed animals. I love it--I'm a sucker for these stories where predator and prey all snuggle up happily together.

Got a little cute at the end, but I think I'll enjoy reading this aloud to kids at the library, it has a nice patter to it.
Great read-aloud material. Similar to several other "pile on the bed" books.

Reassuring read for kids who let their imaginations run away with them.
Rat-a-tat-tat! When a fox is running after him one evening, Bunny barely makes it safely to his home. As he's getting ready for bed, a duck, a mouse, and a sheep all come knocking, tryign to escape the same fox. Will the fox get them? Lots of good opportunities for predictions, and the sweet rhymes will appeal to younger primary students.
