affable execution, useful historical information, self-aware insider perspective. i think this book seems based on the premise that the difficulties of literary study are actually fun and should be cosseted, but that literary study isn't inherently difficult, and that it's actually fun to come to see it's simple. at the same time, the way the sections in verse and the general strain of creativity that runs throughout the book inform the project is kind of really radical, especially when placed i...more

The Goodreads blurb says:
"Reading this kind of writing, however, may not come easily in a culture where poetry is treated as property of a special class. It is this barrier that Bob Perelman seeks to break down in this fascinating and comprehensive account of the language writing movement."

I laughed. As if reading this kind of writing would come easily to anyone.

Having said that Perelman's book provides a good description and defence of a type of writing that needs both.
