Hiram Grange doesn't believe in fate. He makes his own destiny. That's a good thing, because Queen Mab of Faerie has foreseen the destruction of the world, and as usual... it's all Hiram's fault. He must choose: kill an innocent girl and save the universe, or rescue her and watch all else burn. Just another day on the job for Hiram Grange.

I met Hiram Grange on a plane as I headed home from the East Coast. New Hampshire to be exact. The stench of booze and an air of miscreant hung about him. He was clearly a character one avoided in dark alleys and polite company. But as I quickly discovered, when the proverbial --- hits the fan, he is the man you want to find.

There are five amazing volumes in the Hiram Grange series. How to review them? They each stand alone, but are best taken all together. The stories are dynamic, bizarre, and...more

Note:- this is a five book novella series, each book can easily be read on its own, however as with these things starting with book one and reading through is much more rewarding.

As these are all fairly short novellas I'll review the series as a whole.

Hiram Grange is our last defence against the things that got bump in the night, however Hiram is no suave square jawed hero. Hiram is a flawed man with addiction to sex, opium, absinthe and a really unhealthy obsession to Jodie Foster.

Forces, dark and ancient, lurk in the dark places of reality and serve the Abyss. Other powers, capricious and amoral, use the power of the Veil to serve their own mysterious purposes. Between them and the rest of humanity stands Hiram Grange. A misshapen, damaged man one step away from falling into the Abyss himself, Hiram takes his father’s Webley and Pritchard bayonet, some basic knowledge of magic, and his hatred for the beasts of the Abyss and throws himself under the supernatural bus; for...more

Taking the opportunity to get Hiram out of America for a spell, Kev keeps up the action from the previous book, but spices it a little differently. Where Rob delivered a techno-supernatural thriller, Chosen One serves up a tentacled extravaganza of old school horror. Faeries (not your mother’s), damsels, possessions, shadowy figures in white playing manipulative games behind the scenes – and everyone, it seems, wants a piece of Hiram. Poor Belfast. If you think the city’s been through the ringer...more

Hiram Grange is back in the fourth installment of the series, this time finding himself ensnared in a plot involving faeries and yog-shoggoth as Kevin Lucia throws a bit of Lovecraft into the mix.

Hiram heads off to Belfast to investigate the murder of five women, where he finds himself tasked to kill AND protect the same woman -- the choice he makes could destroy the entire world!

This book (the longest in the series) continued the trend of improving on the one before. I enjoyed seeing this autho...more

An excellent, rip-roaring read. The action doesn't let up for a minute, yet we still get a chance to learn and care about the characters. The story is dark without being dreary, and insightful without being tedious, and the noir sense of humor is right on the money. I haven't read the other Hiram Grange volumes, but this was a great introduction. I look forward to reading the other books and more of this authors work.

I received this book for free from Goodreads First-Reads. Thanks, Goodreads. An...more

I love noir, paranormal, so this was right up my alley. Along with a conflicted anti-hero, this was a bit of a guilty pleasure, and reminiscent of King's writing, if you liked his earlier works.

This book drew me in from the first page. Characters were well-developed and the story was full of action and vivid-details. I'll never look at maggots the same way again!

I'm a writer. I write about weird and strange things. I also write about my life, which is often weird and strange. I'm a grateful and thankful husband, and father of two wonderful children.
