Fine. I have to admit that the cover picture of Mama Mia's daughter, the beautiful Amanda Seyfried was the one who caught my eyes while walking around the bookstore. All my friends - girls, gays -and their men, who saw that ABBA movie liked Amanda especially in the opening wharf scene with her singing "I have a dream/a song to sing/to help me cope with anything" in dark starry night with moon and starlights reflecting and bouncing on the small waves.

Reading the blurb, saying that this book has something to do with Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, made me want to buy it. Also, the book looks cool: glossy with all those colorful pictures of the country I almost had the chance to visit twice, Italy. Twice I was invited. Twice I missed it because of not enough time to process my visa. I even attended Basic Italian class in 2006. Now I have to content myself looking at the pictures of Italy. Oh maybe someday, who knows?

Anyway, the book's cover says "The story of the letter-writing phenomenon that inspired the idea behind the motion picture Letter to Juliet". So this book was neither novelized from movie nor the movie was made from this book. This is actually a non-fiction book telling the actual story behind all those people who over decades have been responding to letters coming from everywhere around the globe. Letters, mostly love-related, addressed to the Shakespeare heroine, Juliet.

First was just businessman Solimani who took fancy in responding to letters left in Juliet's tomb in Verona. He was the custodian of Juliet's (make-believe) tomb. When he became overaged, a retired professor, Beltramini took over. When he died, female secretaries were hired. As of this writing, there are 6 of them and they sign their responses, Juliet or Giulietta (if they write in Juliet's native language).

If you love Romeo and Juliet, read this book. It has the story behind that famous Shakespeare play. It tells about the play's predecessors. Showing that the idea of ill-fated lovers was not actually Shakespeare's original concept. You will also like the sample letters. Most of them are cheesy but sweet, like this:

"I asked myself many times, how it is that we fall in love: do we trip, lose our balance and fall, scraping our hearts? Do we crash to the ground, on stones? Or it is like staying on the edge of a precipice for all time? (from) Poland"

This book also shows the now tourist-destination places in Verona because of this play: not only Juliet and Romeo's tombs but also their homes, places where famous scenes happened in the play, it even has the recipe for Juliet's cookies (how I wish I know how to bake) and even Juliet's statue whose breasts visiting tourist fondle supposedly for good luck.

A short while later, in 1972, Guilo Tamassia gathered several friends and founded an informal club bearing Juliet's name. No women could be in attendance when they met every two weeks. During their meetings, the men would cook dinner and have lengthy debates and performances. They would write letters to the city officials expressing their opinions about problems. They were asked by the cultural commissioner, Alfredo Meocci to help with Juliet's letters. They received help from a Mexican student who was learning Italian and French, as well as others around the neighborhood.

The best letter in 1993 received the Cara Guiletta prize, which at the time was an all inclusive weekend in Verona, Italy. The award ceremony was held on Valentine's Day at Juliet's house.

When the city took the letters back into possession, they realized how difficult it had become to write back to every person; therefore, Tamassia was given back the letters. Now there are women secretaries answering the letters, which have been found to all have similar themes - unrequited love, falling for a person who is already married or otherwise involved, problems stemming from loneliness, and differences of religion and culture.

I fell in love with the story behind the movie. This book was incredible because the authors not only included the history, but also the actual letters to Juliet, from all around the world! It was an extremely easy, but informative, read. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for more information about the movie, a history nerd, or anyone that likes a good love story - because isn't that what Romeo and Juliet is?!

Letters to Juliet is my first read by Lise Friedman. I recently watched the movie and loved it. It's a breathtaking story for love and loss.
The movie has a different twist than the book. The book explores more of the world of Juilet's letters and how they came to be. The ladies of Verona have assumed the role of Secretaries of Juliet' for eight decades and has voluntarily answered each of these letters personally.

This book was an interesting and quick read, but not really what I thought or wanted it to be. It focused a great deal on the architecture of Juliet's "home" and chronicled the history of the cite through the years in Verona very well, but the letters often seemed like afterthoughts to the chapters. I found the accounting's of the letter writers, the secretaries to Juliet, and the history of Verona fascinating. Verona has such a rich history through the eyes of so many writers. A history that has been revitalized and kept alive by the proud locals. From the reviews I've read it seems most people think this book was an offshoot of the movie, and are disappointed that it doesn't have the movie's story. This book is not what I thought it would be. I clearly did not read the description right. I was excited when I purchased this because I loved the movie so much. But, alas it is not a novel, like I thought it was. Just skimming through the letters. I can't get through the history part, too boring for me.

This was a very quick and amusing read, especially considering it was non-fiction. This book chronicles the history of Verona's promotion of Romeo and Juliet, specifically the answering of letters written to the romantic heroine. My feelings towards the book Leters to Juliet were influenced by having the front cover picture of the actress and having recently seen the movie. So I started reading it thinking it would be a light, fast and probably commercial kind of 'story'.

From the first pages I have been dragged instead into the words. Trying not to become part of the words through my well-known feeling when reading something very well written about Italy, I tried to stay objective. Letters to Julliet gives historical facts about the story, Verona and more importantly it captures so well that amazing feeling that I have only found in things linked to Italy.
If I would be better in cooking delicate things like Baci di Giulietta, I can promise you I would be preparing them right now. The whole recipe is in the book, so I hope someone will make them and let me know how they are! :-)
This book brings me back to my visit to Verona, from where my dear friend is. She showed me around her city and it made me feel the wonderful Italian beauty. Reading this book, I am back at casa di Giulietta, walking a bit further in the narow street towards casa di Romeo which has kept all the secrecy in the marvelous building like the legend around his name has kept and passes on to each new generation.
This book is mainly about the tons of letters which are send yearly to the secretaries in verona, tells about the universal thing in everybody's lide 'love', Shakespeare's part in all this and the ones before him and so much more.

I went through the book in one day and lvoed it. What I thought would be a commercial, only facts about the movie and legend, empty telling was such a good and informative book. It felt lively even if it was about the past and at the same time present and future as love will be always around every second of everybody's life in whatver way.

I know it is a bit empty and commercial, but I watched Juliet+Romeo, the modern version, just before finishing the book.... to hear the words.(less)

In Verona, Italy there is a monument dedicated to Juliet Capulet, its most famous resident, where thousands have flocked for over a century to pray to, talk to, touch the gravestone of, and leave letters for the iconic lady of love. But how can that be? Juliet is a character, a figment of William Shakespeare's imagination. Well, there you are wrong. Though we don't know that Juliet ever existed, her legend reaches back much farther than Shakespeare, who wasn't as original as you might think. He took his story from other writers (primarily Arthur Brooks's Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet and Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde), who had taken their stories from others before them. And Juliet's (as well as Romeo's) existence depends entirely on whom you are asking. She is a legend, and many believe that legends start somewhere.

Regardless of Juliet's actual existence, the lovelorn have been visiting this site in Verona for centuries; speaking to Juliet and tacking up notes begging her for help or just a listening ear. In the 1930's someone started answering them. Ettore Solimani was given the job of caretaker to Juliet's tomb in April of 1937. As someone who deeply respected the legend of the arguably greatest heroine of love, he wanted to do something more than just clean the grounds and admit people into the memorial. He recognized that what these women (and often men as well) wanted was to be part of the legend -- to hear from Juliet as though she was a divine presence who could solve their love woes. So he began to write back and became the first of Juliet's Secretaries; a line of people (often more than just one person now-a-days) now known as Club di Giulietta, who respond to each letter written to Juliet that includes a return address. To this day not only do people post hundreds of thousands of letters along the wall at Juliet's tomb, but they also send their letters to Verona from across the world.

In Letters to Juliet: Celebrating Shakespeare's Greatest Heroine, the Magical City of Verona, and the Power of Love the history of this magically romantic story, as well as the town of Verona and it's devotion to their sacred resident is told through photographs, facts, and samples of letters written to Giulietta. This book had some interesting tidbits in it about the history of Juliet and the tradition of writing letters to her. I recently finished re-reading Romeo and Juliet, so I enjoyed reading about some of Shakespeare's source material (why he felt like he needed to change Juliet's age from 18 to almost 14 is a wonder...). For what it is (a history book), this story is fantastic. After watching the movie, "Letters to Juliet", I wanted to know if there really was a club like this that existed and what the story behind it was. I picked up this book, and I found exactly what I was looking for.

I got this book because I love the movie Letters to Juliet. I wanted to learn more about the letter-writing phenomenon that inspired the idea for the movie. I really enjoyed reading it except for two disappointments. I was disappointed that not all the letters included have answers with them. I'm also disappointed that there isn't a chapter about the movie. I wanted to read Claire's letter to Juliet, and Sophie's answer.

This book tells about the beginnings of the letters, including some of the letters actually written to Juliet over the years.It turns out that, for at least over a century, possibly longer, people have been writing letters to Juliet, asking her for advice. Well I watched the movie and then saw that it was a book.......so I went to read it. I must say I was disapointed with the result. I loved the movie but the book.....esh it was full of pictures with not very much detail. This is a really nice romance book. I've read the book and cried and watched the movie and cried. I like the way they went on an adventure to find the guy's grandmother's first love. I love the way the guy hated her at first and slowly fell in love. I love the way the happy ending ended. It was a soft landing where everything fell into place and all the jigsaw puzzle fitted nicely into place. Definitely a great book!

I was very much disappointed with this book. I first saw the preview of the movie and was hoping a book would come out as well. When I read it was, I pre-ordered it! I received it and much to my surprise, wasn't very enthusiastic about it! It reminded me of a children's picture book instead of a novel! I was fascinated by this topic when the movie came out. I had never heard about the Juliet Society or anything like it. I could not resist picking this one up when I saw it. I was rewarded with a wonderfully put together history and picture festival of vibrant colors and words. A must read for anyone who loved the movie.
