Fruits Basket, Vol. 3 (Fruits Basket #3)
It's Valentines Day and you know what that means -- lots of chocolates for the cutest boys at school! In this case, it's a pretty close tie between hot-headed Kyo Sohma and Yuki 'prince charming' Sohma. Of course the kind-hearted Tohru, guest of the Sohma family, has chocolates for everyone! But when White Day comes around, what will the Sohma family give back? How about a...more

In volume three of Fruits Basket, friends, shit starts going down.
First off, Kyo (Potential Love Interest #2) smiles a gentle smile at our always-cheerful housecleaning heroine.
Not to be outdone, Yuki (Potential Love Interest #1) gives her a hair ribbon and calls her princess.
Dear God, the romance is BURNING A HOLE THROUGH THE PAPER yomg.
Also, we’re reintroduced to a tiny German-speaking child with an apparent oral fixation that forces him to constantly be eating lollypops, who in a hysterical t...more

*Flails* OH MY GOD!!!!!!!! HARU WAS IN THIS VOLUME AND IT EXCITES ME SOOOOOOO MUCH TO SEE HIM IN ACTION!!!! HOW I LOVE THIS MAN! BOY! COW! WHATEVER! YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!! *Piano falls on head* Oof! @_@ ...thanks. I needed that. I got a bit too fangirly there... heh? *Ahem* Anyway, as you probably already know... I love this volume of Fruits Basket. Mostly for Haru but also because more things were revealed. Seriously, it's painful seeing how slow things get reveled in this manga but that's wha...more
This series--gosh, I love it. I can't actually express how much I love it. (Also, this is obviously better than all the other volumes because Kyo's on the cover! Yes!)
Introducing Hatsuharu and... someone else. (It might just have been Hatsuharu...) He's interesting. All the Sohma's are interesting, actually. He's sort of like Kyo, but less severe, and he obviously likes Yuki more. (view spoiler)...more

I have not said this about the previous volumes but I love the notes that the author, Natsuki Takaya has distributed through out Fruits Basket. They are so much fun to read! They always retain to the story or something a fan has asked about.
Ok, so one of my new favorite characters in this series is a total cow! No really, he turns into the cow of the Zodiac. Haru has a split personality. There is black Haru who wants to get into trouble and fight with Kyo all the time and there is white Haru who...more

I didn't like this volume as much. It was a little slow moving, and I actually got distracted while reading. We got to know new things and meet new characters, but not too much happened plot wise. (view spoiler)That's about the extent of what happened.

Yay! I love Fruits Basket! Another one down!!! Love it so much. Hahaahaha, so funny when Hatsuharu acts all cool and awesome with his fur jacket and club outfit, and then hops on his bike and rides away. So funny!! And then when Hatsuhara trips Kyo with the wire and looks out and says "Doing this is very dangerous. Anyone other than Kyo would not get away with just a scrape- so please don't try this at home..." so great! Even better in the anime, because Kyo and Yuki are like, "Who are you talki...more
I realized another thing that is cool about this series--along with the Tohru-as-savior-figure concept, both Tohru and the Sohma family delve into some of our greatest insecurities. These are things that anybody can identify with, like envying someone and not realizing that you have good qualities too, or taking bad things that other people say about you to heart when they may not have meant to hurt you. Takaya touches on some universal truths of being human and makes us think. It seems like tha...more

Introduces the punk-tastic Hatsuharu and a bit of his backstory, as well as giving Momiji a chance to show off his extreme wisdom in the story of "The Most Foolish Traveler in the World." Fabulous Shigure/Hattori interactions, and I especially love the very last page of the book where Shigure is gleefully proud of his present for Tohru (a maid's outfit), and Haru warns him not to get himself arrested. Added bonus: the introduction of Mogeta, the extremely silly Pokemon ripoff movie which has Kag...more
The humor of this book can be summed up in one passage-
Kyo: CHOCOLATES?!?! it's valentine's day?!
Tohru: Uh...it's actually tomorrow but it's not on a school day, so we're celebrating today.
(Kyo runs toward the door, is stopped by Mayuko-Sensei.)
Mayuko-Sensei: Where are you going? If you try to step out that door again, we'll take your hair back to its original color with this...Let's Dye Our Hair. (Holds up hair dye)

Basically, manga seems to be an insider thing for people who "get it" and I don't think I get it. I'm enjoying it, but I felt lost in this volume. As with some of the other reviewers, I had a hard time keeping characters apart... A hard time following some of the dialog... And I felt like the story wasn't really going anywhere. Kinda like "oh, hey, let's take a break from the storyline to do this little Valentine's Day thingy..."

The book begins with a school race, which the highly-competitive Kyo sees as an opportunity to beat his ultimate rival and cousin, Yuki Sohma, the rat. The pictures had Maggie and I laughing out loud in public places, trying to keep ourselves under control but often not able, class=”hiddenSpellError” pre=”">Kyo with his cat ears, fangs, eyes and tail with electric energy swirling around him as he focuses on thoroughly trouncing “That damn rat Yuki” in the race was hilarious. I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SERIES!!!It's about a poor girl (Tohru) Gets taken in by the Sohma family. which the Sohma family has vengeful Chinese zodiac animal posses they Sohma family. ( they can be there selfs it's not like the spirits are controlling them) but every time they are touched by the opposite gender they turn into the zodiac animals. Shigure, turns into a dog (again they have control of their selves not the spirits) Kyo turn into a cat and something else but he keeps that a secret, and...more
Natsuki Takaya, Fruits Basket, vol. 3 (Tokyopop, 2000)
After a quick re-read of vol. 2 to get my head back into the right place, I decided to continue on with Fruits Basket and see if I liked it any more than I did the first time I tried the series a few years ago. I started reading manga with Fruits Basket and Tarot Cafe, and I wasn't very impressed with either of them. I now realize this is because they're not for beginners; manga conventions are such that, at times, an entire issue of a manga...more

Synopsis: Fruits Basket is a shōjo manga series created by Natsuki Takaya that follows the life of Tohru Honda. When the series begins, Tohru is living in a tent in the woods after being recently orphaned when her mother died in a car accident. Somehow, Tohru is able to remain optimistic despite all the shit she has had to go through.
While wandering through the forest she's living in, she runs across the house of the Sohma family. As it happens, Tohru goes to...more

This volume keeps up with the laughs and the romance. I loved seeing more of Momiji, because he is so cute. And even more new characters are introduced! Also, the cover has Kyo on it! And as you know, he is my favourite character. I need to order the next few volumes from the library. Fruits Basket can't be missed! I would definitely call this a must-read for manga fans. And if you've never read manga, this is a great one to start with.
- Hatori and Shigure are hard to tell apart at times.
- Is Okami a zombie!?!?
- Tohru has such a positive outlook on life. I want to be like that.
- What is up with Shigure's editor? She is a spaz!
- Yuki is still a fem.
- I like Haru. He is cool!
- There are a lot of people in this manga, but it's handled very well. I don't get confused or anything. It's just that some of them look the same.

The series seems to be picking up nicely; I really liked Hatori's backstory and the hints about the mysterious family leader, Akito. Also, the basically tangential story about the foolish traveler broke my heart. I appreciate how the silly premise can be undercut by real sadness, by wonderful pangs of the bittersweet. There is definite potential here, and I'll hopefully be able to find the next few volumes soon.
I'm still really enjoying the characters and the storyline. I agree with some people who said they felt lost in this volume, and had difficulty keeping the characters apart. I wish the front of the manga reminded us who all of the characters were, instead of just the main ones. I gave up trying to remember since I had already returned volume 2 to the library. Will continue with volume 4 as the story is still fun!
This series is getting better and better the more I read of it. Tohru's life is getting better every time she gets to meet more family members of the Soma family. She's starting to finally bounce back from her moms death, becoming part of the Soma family. Being a great addition to the Soma family always assuring everyone she meets its for the best. This series is just so enticing to me.
Soooo what if I'm read a manga? I swore to myself in high school that I would never become one of those obsessive girls - its just weird. And I have stayed true to that promise. But I have to read these. There's no going back.
The story and situations the characters find themselves in are nothing short of hysterical.
Yes, Fruits Basket is my greatest guilty pleasure. I love it.

I think I'm starting to get into the rhythm of these more. I immediately felt better seeing Kyo on the cover b/c I probably like his character the best. The okami at the onsen--funny. I'm getting curious about this curse, the other members of the Sohma family, if Tohru will help to break the curse, etc.
There is never a dull moment with the Sohma family, and Valentine’s Day is no exception. Girls give the cutest boys chocolate, and Tohru has chocolates for all of the Sohma family. Then White Day comes, and the Sohma’s must find something to give back to her.
I liked this book. Nothing extremely exciting happened, but there are hints at something darker, showing that this series is more than the cute little book this pretends to be.

Well in this volume things seem to be going further on the romance side, other than valentines day and a trip to the Hot Springs nothing really goes forwards plot wise, thought I REALLY want to know what Shigure and Akito are planning...
