This monograph is written for the specialist of 18th century political history. It's a bear to tease out the information of how the militia was called out, how the lord lieutenant functioned, or who was in the militia actually was. Much of the problem with this monograph is its age; the whole issue of the militia needs to be revisited and reviews from several perspectives--social, legal, economic--and a thematic, not chronological, narrative should be provided.
