Is It Just Me?: Or is it nuts out there?
Have you noticed that things aren't as civil as they once were? Or that rudeness is no longer an exception but a lifestyle? Sure you have. All you need to do is set foot outside your door to see that bad manners are taking over everywhere. People are yakking on cell phones in restaurants, even at church. Folks in carpools wear enough cologne to make our eyes bleed. Complet...more

I wanted and expected to like this book. (Duh! Otherwise, why would I pick it up in the first place?) Unfortunately, mostly I did not like it. It's just not very entertaining. I expected a book by Whoopi Goldberg either to be humorous or at least to have some interesting stories. For the most part, it isn't and it doesn't.
The book consists of Whoopi ticking off 50 or so rude things people do that annoy her, and essentially saying, "People, life will be better for all of us if you don't do those...more

I have to admit I think Whoopi is great. I love her on The View and watched almost all her movies. However, I expected a few laughs in this book and its mostly a book of her pet peeves. Yes, she makes some very valid intelligent points. This book did not make me laugh at all, and I tried to finish it. I read more than 1/3 of the book before giving it up.
Sigh. Recommending this one has me on probation with my book club. :) And, now I see why. I really was surprisingly disappointed. In my opinion, Whoopi Goldberg is a genius in many ways. She's actually on my list of people I'd be okay with being stranded on a desert island with. [If, you know, I really HAVE to be stranded on a desert island.] She is always funny, irreverent, clever, intelligent, and well-informed, as well as a woman who still comes across as very "real" and compassionate to me....more
When I first saw this on the bookshelves, I was excited. Whoopi Goldberg writing about her pet peeves? Seeing as I often find myself agreeing with a lot that she has to say, I figured it was worth a read.
I'll spare you: It's not.
I was severely disappointed. It was boring and I felt as through most of her suggestions were simplified ways of coping, not actual solutions.
You could save time and just read the table of contents: that basically sums it all up.

No Whoopi, it isn't just you.....it is nuts out there!! In this book, Whoopi discusses things that make her nuts in our society. Much of what she discusses in that people can be truly rude and see nothing wrong with it. Her observations are blunt and forthwright just as they would be if you were watching her perform or listening to her on TV. She talks about things that show a lack of respect for others. There are even "self tests" so that you will know if you are rude, lacking respect, lacking i...more

I wanted to like this book. I had high hopes. I really like Whoopi and enjoy her sense of humor and was looking forward to her unique voice but instead I got trash. This book feels like it was ghost written by someone trying to imitate her and failing miserably. It feels like she dashed it off half heartedly or to fulfill a contract. It's simpily a list of her pet peeves with short commentaries attached. The whole thing just reeks of not caring enough and I found it appallingly bad. I forced mys...more
What are the things that bug you? There's a pretty good chance that they are bugging Whoopi too.
Whoopi has taken the things that we see people do every day that sometimes defies belief and has put them and her acerbic comments in this book. When one reads this book it is difficlt not to say. "I should have writtent his book", and well, we all could have.

Basically a list of all the things people do that piss off Whoopi Goldberg. Gee, I wish I had the clout to get a book like this published-I complain about the same kind of stuff ALL THE TIME and yet no one offers me a book deal! Pardon the snide remark; I'm just jealous she thought of it first! It was entertaining and I really agree with a lot of what she says (why can't people understand the concept of personal space? And what the hell happened to saying "please" and "thank you"? Ask anyone who...more

To me there is only one book that is the greatest of all times, and this book may be found pretty much anywhere--The Bible. I have now learned that there is a second book that should be offered in hotels and motels nightstands--Is It Just Me? Whoopi is one of my favorite comedians, and the reason being because she always tells it like it is and she's usually right!
I laughed so much through this book until I was in tears. I wish to tell Whoopi she is NOT ALONE in her feelings on human behavior. I...more

I picked up this book because I like Whoopi Goldberg and her humor. From the cover, you get the impression that this book is all about a comedic look at current events. Perhaps she'll give her funny take on the whole Senator Craig fiasco, seeing as the picture on the cover spoofs it.
Instead, what you get is a book filled with her thoughts and ideas about things like manners, proper use of cell phones in public and things of that nature. At times, the book is a lot like being sat down by your fa...more

I've been a Whoopi fan for a while. This book seemed like it would be a nice read. I think Ms. Goldberg hit the nail on the head with this one. I'm so glad someone wrote a book about the growing trend of more and more people displaying bad manners, rude behavior and being inconsiderate. Sometimes these behaviors can be overlooked, because not everyone has the same experiences or upbringing. But constant rudeness is unacceptable. Whoopi said it best, "please and thank you are a must"! It only tak...more
Have to say, I was expecting more humor. But I do share a lot of Ms Goldberg's bitches. If I am in the middle of the store shopping, i mAy answer the phone--but not when I am checking out! I will step away if its A call I NEED to take. I DO say please and thank you, and thank the person who holds the door for me. But then again, Whoopie and I are from the sAme generation. But I knew I raised my kids right when their daycare teachers told me they were the only kids in their classes who adressed t...more
Ya gotta love Whoopi! I was hoping for more humor, but got a lot of lecturing. I must say reading what Whoopi thinks is like thinking in my own head. I agree with so many of, if not all, of her observances of our current society. We desperately need a return to civility. A retreat from bullying and belittling others, in order to make us feel superior. I belive Jesus Christ had something to say about that. I also heard Richard Dreyfuss, at our national teacher's convention, years ago, BEGGING tea...more

I love Whoopi, and am sorry to say it, but I was bored.
This book is more of a blog. With a good editor it could have been shaped up into an entertaining read. My two star rating is due mostly to the format and effect, not her actual views.
I find it interesting that Whoopi's advocating a return to politeness and respect in society (I'm with her 100% there, especially when it comes to political and racial rhetoric), but find her argument on curse words not fully consistent.

It's a comedian's book for sure--conversational in tone, snappy, witty and brief--just a series of musings built around the central theme of civility (and the lack thereof) in Millenial America. Written and published before Tucson, this book asks many of the right questions about how we came to be so selfish, mean and rude. A chapter near the end of the book takes on the subject of bullying full force, but offers no real answers.

Is it just me? Or is Whoopi Goldberg ranting?
To me, she is. This book is - quite literally and unapologetically - her speech on the top of a soap box about everything that annoys her in this world. And trust me, the sentiment gets old. Fast.
Granted, she's a comedian, and some of the material would have made you laugh out loud if she delivered it. But outside of a stand-up night and on a page (and page after page after page) it gets tedious, boring and down-right annoying.

I loved this book. It's absolutely true, and really not at all funny. However, I'm sure that given the topic, it wasn't intended to be funny. So if you're thinking, "hey! A book by Whoopi! That's going to be HILARIOUS!" and don't bother to check the topic or the reviews, get ready to be disappointed. If you're a shitty parent, an asshole or a bully, you'll also hate it because she's calling you out. But if you're a person who's wondering what happened to manners and courtesy, if you want some st...more

This book is really good.
I would not consider myself a "fan" of whoopi Goldberg, generally, I don't read book written by "stars" however I saw an interview where she discussed this book and it's topic interested me.

I have always been a fan of Whoopi Goldberg so I was really looking forward to reading this book. I expected a rather humorous look at annoying things in our world today. Half of my expectations were true. She did write about many annoying situations. Unfortunately the humorous part was not. I agree with just about everything she wrote about but it felt like a lecture to me - telling what I should and shouldn't do - how I should and shouldn't handle situations. None of it was very humorous. If i...more
I really like this book. This is not a book by Whoopi the comedienne, this is a book by Whoopi the commentator speaking on manners and being civil decent people. I agree with almost everything that she says. I have issues with the smoking parts but I also know that neither side will ever understand the others or even agree that the other side has any possible redeeming features, so i will pass on that! Manners are good, and being polite and courteous is good, NOTHING will ever change that and co...more
I realize that Ms. Goldberg has a valid point about the deterioration of manners and lack of common courtesy in modern culture. Unfortunately, I have to agree with another reviewer who felt like the book just wasn't that funny. Rather than using her skills in humor/satire to comment on and inspire readers to reflect on these bad manners, the author uses her celebrity to have an opportunity to publish what, in anyone else, would be a series of rambling rants. To her credit, Ms. Goldberg warns rea...more
I like Whoopi. She's a talented actress and comedian, and I still think her piece as the stoner in Amsterdam who ends up at the Anne Frank house is one of the most stunning pieces of writing. She is also fierce and intelligent, even though I have been astounded by some of the statements she has made - especially 'rape' and 'rape rape'.
So I should have enjoyed this. All this seems to be is a mismatched series of rants with no logical presentation. By the end I was bored and felt like saying "Is...more
I love Whoopi, so when after seeing her promote her book numerous times on The View, I figured it must be a good one. I was totally expecting it to be, I figured it would be comical with a bit a common sense, after all, that's how I picture Whoopi. Sadly I was extremely disappointed in this book, if that's what you want to call it.

I just loved this book. Who would expect an etiquette book with a title like this, or from Whoopi Goldberg. But, basically that's what this is, written in a very likable way.
Whoopi has taken on lots of daily things we do that irritate her, and reminded me, anyway, how rude and selfish we've become as a society in general. We talk on our cell phones in elevators, in line at the store, and other public places. Not everyone wants to hear our maudlin conversations, nor our dramatic and socially unac...more

I don't think this book would have even been published had it not been for Whoopie's authorship. A collection of one or two page rants ranging anywhere from elevator and cell phone etiquette to appropriate behavior while staying in a hotel. Nothing new. Whoopie is right on (especially about cell phone etiquette) but I think if you asked most people what is and is not good behavior they would score the correct answer, it just seems as thought people consider themselves exempt from the situation a...more
I did not love this book or really even like it for that matter. Never judge a book by its' cover is a lesson that I learned in grammar school, but apparently it hasn't sunken into my brain. I thought the book would be funny. I am giving this book away to anyone even mildly interested in reading it. Just send me your address and...more

people with bad manners, people who don't respect the law or other people, good people in society
The society tody that we live in has really gotten out of hand with rules and manners and public display of behavior. How many times have you talked with someone on the phone only for them to be talking or doing something on their computer and not tell you? Or listen to people say that they won't let their children listen to the president of the United States? When did that become an ok thing to tell your kids? I was really looking forward to reading this book. I love Whoopi and her ability to present a situation with so much humor and turn it ever so slightly to really hit home and then turn it around again and make you laugh your ass off. I didn't find that with this book. And while I agree with her on so many of her pet peeves, I found myself stressing out reading it. It brought all of the things that annoy me in society but wasn't balanced with enough humor to make it completely enjoyable. I still...more
Whoopi's lament that rudeness has replaced manners...you know them...they talk on cellphones in restaurants, they let their kids scream in public, they wear so much cologne that you can still smell them a week later...they treat the movie theatre like it's their livingroom, and on and on.
A good read, not laugh out loud funny as I'd hoped, but it covers a lot of pet peeves that run rampant in today's society. Nice to know that I'm not alone out there in wondering where civility went.

This review is for the hardcover version of this book - the hardcover edition is yet to be listed anywhere on GoodReads that I can find.
Not nearly as funny or interesting as I thought it would be. **Slight spoiler ahead**
The book was mostly Whoopi Goldberg talking about or complaining about all the things in society that bug her or that she doesn't like. I did laugh a few times, but I would NOT buy the book - it's definitely a library check-out, one time only read.
